Virginia Tech Football Recruiting: Cornerback Troy Pride Commits to Hokies

Hokies land their third defensive back prospect of the 2016 recruiting class.

[@GHSIsland5]

Cornerback Troy Pride Jr. announced his verbal commitment to Virginia Tech this evening.

The Greer, South Carolina product is rated as a 3-star prospect by Rivals and is currently unranked by 247Sports. Pride is the Hokies' third defensive back commitment of the 2016 cycle. He joins Myles Wolfolk and Kareem Felder as Tech verbals.

Koma will have an interview with Troy in the near future. Until then celebrate with GIFs and check out Troy's highlight film.

Only tangentially related, but Tennessee has started calling themselves WRU, which I find bizarre. Several other teams have better claims than they do.

As of recently, I would call Clemson WRU.

Really? GT has at least two greats ones playing right now.

Clemson has 3 (Watkins, Hopkins, Bryant) that, though young, don't look like they're gonna be slouches.

GT has exactly two. And a third who never saw the field this season.

In all fairness to Tennessee, they've put guys in the league much more regularly than either Clemson or GT.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Agreed. And I hate some Tennessee

True, but I hear __U, I think of that school putting out good players that succeed in the NFL. Clemson recently has been that school.

I also think that the distinction weighs more on recent success and not past success. Recruits look at a school that has put out quality WRs into the league recently and they want to go there.

Oddly enough I could get behind that only because I feel like Paul Johnson would hate if his offensive system was "reduced" to WRU. Also I'd like to hear a talking head say that GT WRs have to learn how to be amazing in order to catch any of the ducks that GT's QBs lob up.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Are we losing Alex's great reporting?

Edit: I have the reading comprehension of a 2nd grader

Edit: Not only are we not losing Alex (Koma's) great reporting, but we're bringing someone else onboard.

Sorry, I'm stupid. I kept reading that as an abrupt jump to informing us that Alex had an (job) interview with Troy (University)

I thought you intended that as a joke at first. I had to think twice about why you would think Alex would leave lol.

Holy hell he's fast!

Pride commiteth before the fall.

Love early commits.

Welcome aboard DBU.

Are we going after any recruits named Joy?

If we were to land Pride and Joy, I'm predicting 15 blocked punts and 15 punt returns for TDs in 2016.

Welcome to Hokie Nation, Troy! We look forward to your achievements on and off the field.

A commit on my birthday!!! Thanks for the great bday present Mr. Pride!!! Welcome to Hokienation!!!!

There are a couple 4 and 5 star guys in 757 at CB. With all the CB commits for 2016 already makes me wonder how many CBs Tech will sign, and what they feel their chances are with those guys. Maybe they feel Mr Pride is underrated and a better fit at VT. Welcome to Tech!

We will probably take 5 DBs every year with the way our defense has been trending lately.

All of those VA guys would be takes for us, especially Davis, Rene, and Taylor. I don't think any of them are scared of competition either. Although Rene probably heads out of state (only moved to the state a year or so ago, he's Canadian) and Taylor likely ends up elsewhere as well.

Rene and Davis are probably corners, Taylor can play whatever he damn well pleases. Bruton is probably a safety, Pride very well may end up there as well. Also, I think Robinson and Bracey are receivers regardless.

I think Tech will probably sign a couple more. I was thinking the same exact thing when I heard this news, but took a look at the recruiting classes from '11-'15. Tech will definitely need a fairly large haul this cycle for some depth.

Wish we could load up on O lineman like we do DB's every year. I know the coaches know what they are doing but all our commits so far would have to be classified as under the radar (again). And why does the receiver from Charlotte not show up as a commit on Rivals? Because he is not ranked?

They have been. Are you not paying attention the last two recruiting cycles?

Maybe because for the most part, 4 and 5 star recruits don't commit this early in the game?

Conner O'Donnell is listed on 247, but not Rivals. Probably just doesn't have a Rivals profile yet? Hard to say.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

Rumor is that O'Donnell is an odd situation- offer may not have been committable when he committed or something? That's the only reason I could see as he's listed as a commit on ESPN and 247 and he does have a rivals profile.

Remember, VT plays a lot of Nickel. We also like our safeties to have good cover skills so we need a lot of DBs in our Defense.

My guess is Tech signs 5 DBs this cycle. As far as star rankings go, I trust Foster's and Gray's evaluation of defensive backs much more than any recruiting service. If Tech's accepting commitments this early in the cycle, the staff thinks those kids can ball.

Good insight. 5 seems like a lot but I guess they don't redshirt these guys very much anymore so there is a lot of turnover due to graduation and the expectation of some guys going pro early

Foster and Gray have a much better track record than Rivals, 247, etc. when it comes to hits vs misses in the defensive secondary...

Speed kills on the college football field, and he has plenty of it. Great fit for us all the way around. How does a kid with his speed, size, and skill slide under the radar so far? He will prosper here if he works hard.

Felder was just offered by OSU.

Still waiting on Wayne Davis, may commit soon. Lots of DBs.

I thought I was going to be able to take a couple of weeks off and not constantly scour the internet reading about recruiting then we get this excellent news. Congrats Mr. Pride for joining DBU and Hokie Nation!

that second clip: safety gets beat at the 50 yard line and Troy is 14 yards on the wrong end of the play? Still has the receiver down by the 20

It seems to me with a name like his, we really denied the perfect player from landing on Southern California's roster.
