Virginia Tech Drops OT heartbreaker to Duke 86-91

Despite their best effort, Buzzketball can't upset the Blue Devils and fall in overtime.

Jalen Hudson forces his way to the hoop [Mark Umansky]

"Come on, come on! It's not over!"

Those words cascaded down from the Cassell crowd behind me as the final few seconds of the Virginia Tech men's basketball team's 86-91 overtime loss to Duke ticked away.

Actually, those words traveled about three feet (the distance between the first row and the press table), bounced off of the back of my head and then made their way onto the court. However, it was over, and everyone in the building seemed to know it with the exception of one lone fan.

The one thing that was noticeable, though, was that there was no desperation behind those words. It wasn't the type of self-consoling pleas that you'd hear at a normal sporting event as someone lied to themselves about an inevitable outcome. There was nothing but one hundred percent, genuine confidence in them. It was over, but one fan really did still hold out hope.

It was Calvin Williams, Buzz's eldest son, and he represented perhaps the best snapshot of every Tech fan in Cassell on Wednesday night. He cheered, he screamed, and sounded like he really believed right from the opening tip.

And all night, it seemed like the Hokies believed too.

The Blue Devils stepped onto the floor with two of the best players in college basketball. Yet as they had many times this season, Tech had battled their way into another close one despite the perceived talent gap.

In what may have been the surprise performance of the year, Jalen Hudson absolutely balled out. After accumulating a total of 30 minutes over the last three games, the freshman guard played 31 against Duke. He lead the team in both points and rebounds, scoring 23 on just under 50 percent shooting while also skying for six boards.

As quite possibly the last member on the Jalen Hudson bandwagon, I feel vindicated. Up until last night, he's provided flashes, an athletic rebound here or a fast break dunk there, but never put it together for a full 40 until now. His coach has said consistently that he may be the most talented player on the roster, and Wednesday night's showing highlighted why.

Hudson was absolutely vital to the Tech's success, beating his defender off the dribble with ease seemingly every chance he got. It was the first time, quite possibly all year, that Tech was able to get to the hoop and then use the three point line off of that driving success. They took it at Blue Devil phenom Jahlil Okafor with vigor, Hudson, Devin Wilson and Justin Bibbs all crashing into the lane off the bounce.

Wilson also had a tremendous outing. In a year that has been filled with questions about his performance, the point guard was indispensable. He not only got into the paint when needed, but he played what I call the high post position against Duke's 2-3 zone. He stood at the free throw line, letting the entire offense flow through him and finding teammates in the nooks and crannies of the defense.

Speaking of defense, let's get to Satchel Pierce's play against Okafor. The All-American had a great day, scoring 30 points and single handedly not letting the contest slip out of Duke's grasp.

I'm sure that many people want to criticize Pierce for simply allowing 30, which to be fair is a ton. But let's look at the broader picture. Early on, Williams and company decided to stop doubling the post. They got caught in rotation too many times in the first half, and it breaks down to a simple question. Would you rather give up an open three or a 1-on-1 down low?

Buzz chose the latter, and I can't say that I blame him. But, that meant a whole lot of personal time between Tech's only big man and the guy who will almost definitely be the first overall pick in the NBA draft this year.

There were plenty of times where Satch had perfect position defensively, keeping Okafor at a distance from the bucket and having his hands at exactly the right places. Do you know what happened on most of those possessions? The dude canned whatever shot he pulled out of his bag. A hook, baseline fallaway, up and under, it didn't matter. Pierce was doing his best against the best offensive big man in the country.

And while Duke was operating surgically on one end of the floor, the Hokies were white hot on the other. Both teams were nailing shots from everywhere, and in a not so shocking turn of events it came down to the last possession in regulation.

With the crowd going bonkers, the Hokies had a chance to beat the fourth-ranked squad in the country, giving the first year of Buzzketball the kind of signature win it deserved.

We all know how it ended. Hudson dribbled through traffic and missed at the buzzer, which meant overtime. From there Pierce fouled out, Tech's three point shooting dried up and it was all she wrote.

But at that point, it didn't really matter. This game was so important to the direction of the program that the actual result was secondary.

Coaches don't get paid for moral victories and players don't thrive off of fantastic almost-wins, this I know. But that performance proved that Virginia Tech basketball is about to go to a place that we've never seen it. That trips to Cassell aren't going to be fun again, they're already a blast right now.

The entire Buzz Williams experience has already involved a lot of belief, from thousands of other people who root for this team just like Calvin. This year, it's believing that the Hokies can stick with an opponent more talented than them. Next year, it's knowing that Tech will be able to win even more of these games.

The year after that? I'm not a fortune teller, but I don't think last second pleas from the fans will be necessary. Tech will have already have those games, the similarly close ones that have eluded Buzzketball in year one, wrapped up.

Which is pretty goddamn impressive when you consider the glut of players we have on the team right now who are contributing major minutes for us in these games who had yet to suit up for the Hokies 5 months ago.

So what exactly is that rope tethered to?

VT basketball is at the Buzzer.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Great writeup, I'm a believer also in Buzz! The future will be great!

Alas, I fear we are in for a 30 point drubbing on Saturday. After leaving it all on the floor last night, we won't have much left in the tank against the Hoo's.

Call Calvin Williams and ask if he is worried about a 30 point drubbing this weekend. Great article.

Bristolhokie

Mmmmmm........so who is Calvin Williams?

Did you even read the article?

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Isn't Buzz Williams actually named Trent? Calvin doesn't even show up on Hokie Sports.

It's Brent. Regarding Calvin, read the first sentence of the fifth paragraph of the article above.

"Exit light..."

A kid who could probably be a better official than most of the guys in the ACC.

I was very impressed by our entire team and very disappointed in the refs. With a couple minutes to go it looked like they decided to let Okafor throw all the elbows and shove his way to a dominating performance. There should have been an awful lot of fouls called on him in the last two minutes. Satchel was doing his job.

I kept thinking of Rakeem Christmas.

I saw what you were talking about... Usually the refs are are going to let a big guy bump a time or two to get position, but the refs were looking the other way while Okafor was getting his third or fourth helping. That's contact that needs to be called.

They also called a terrible charge on Wilson (I think) when Tyus Jones was still doing the electric slide to get into position.

Probably didn't cause the outcome, but that charge came at a critical time for sure.

Leonard. Duh.

I don't know how you draw a charge while on ONE EFFING LEG

HOKIE HOKIE HOKIE HI
'14 grad

They said it was because he was moving laterally. To me to be set, you actually have to be set and not moving in the air...

you don't have to be set - you have to have established legal guarding position and then you can move laterally- can't move into the offensive player. Shoulder in the chest is charge most of the time. Wish they called the same on Okafor - he got away with too much displacement of Pierce

Great clarification. I was ok (although definitely disappointed) with that charge call, but the stuff Okafor was doing.... if they had let Pierce do the same, I would've been stoked. I love the way Okafor plays and I wish ACC officials would let everyone play that way. I guess the only way you can is if you have a big blue D on your jersey.

Got it. With all of the nuances of the charge/block call, the referees have a real dilemma. I guess it mirrors pass interference judgements in football.

My bottom line is - I hate how ticky tack basketball has become over the last few years.

Leonard. Duh.

Block/Charge is one of the hardest - and you don't have time to process like a football official does for PI . I had one (I'm a HS ref) -that I was 1000% sure of, but both my partners disagreed at halftime. There is a real push to get offense flowing , so freedom of movement is paramount. It leads to ticky tack fouls, but both college and pro have made it hand checking and such a point of emphasis. I just don't think the same emphasis is in the paint. The banging that Pierce and Okafor were doing shouldnt be allowed in the game IMO. I felt that Okafor did what Wilson did, but because it was on the block and between big fellas - they let it go. And its nothing against Okafor- they allow it, so he should do it, but then don't call the 4th foul on Pierce when he just put a hand on Okafor. It was so minor compared to the contact throughout that game and on what had happened on that possession to that point

They also called a terrible charge on Wilson (I think) when Tyus Jones was still doing the electric slide to get into position.

he lowered his shoulder and caught Jones flush in the chest... that's a charge every day of the week. If our player had kept his head up, it probably gets called a defensive foul.

Jamie Luckie was absolutely horrible last night, but that's no surprise.

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

Agree 100%. Okafor was getting a lot of extra emphasis on backing Paige down, and posting up 2 and 3 times to do it. Paige was giving it his all.

One thing that probably played into the way he was playing was knowing there was not another big man behind him. Okafor earned everything he got. Paige was on an island and couldn't risk trying to contest everything going up to the basket, he just had to be solid with his positioning, play straight up with his hands and not bite on the pump fakes to give away away a cheap foul leaving his feet. He fouled out, but not until OT and on some questionable fouls where Okafor did everything short of give Paige a stiff arm to the face while going up.

I know I am biased, but they did claim Duke got "all ball" on a couple plays where VT guys hit the deck after getting a lot of contact from the defender. I think it just looks more physical when you get a bigger guy getting hacked, but I don't know.

Overall great effort. If Paige can grow from this, he could be a nice bigman down low. Sidenote: He also did not have a turnover when they used him on high ball screens all game, routinely finding guards and then getting back into position. Nicely done, big man.

The Dude Abides

Who is Paige? Can we use him down low?
Lol kidding..I know several people that do this on a regular basis. Old habits die hard.

This kind of experience on learning how to play clean to stay in the game will pay off in dividends down the line. One of my biggest complaints about him a couple weeks ago was his inability to stay in the game because of foul trouble due to lazy hand check and off the ball fouls. This area of his game has seen massive improvement over the last few games, and if he can keep that going, and keep developing his offensive game, he will be a legitimate power player in the ACC in the future, especially when he has the experience to play smart enough to challenge only the shots he knows he can get while staying in a good enough defensive position to be an effective big man down low while we have an extra body or two on the bench, so if he should take a chance, we can keep him protected.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

It almost physically pains me to type this, but I'm almost as excited for next years basketball season as I am for football. The way Buzz gets these kids (who are clearly in over their heads against most ACC teams) to step up in big games is incredible. Obviously, I wish we knew how to finish games better, and I wish we could bring give the same intensity we showed against Duke and UVA when we play Radford. But these things come with experience, and that's what this season is all about. I can't wait to see what Buzz can do with all these freshman back next year, alongside more big men, Seth Allen, and the best high school player in Virginia. I've had several people tell me last nights game was one of the loudest they have seen for a team with such a bad record. Cassell may be a dump, but it's our dump damnit. And when Virginia Tech is playing well, it's a nice home court advantage.

Now Miami wants to talk about it...

I love everything about Cassell. It's exactly what I want out of a college arena. If I want all the latest amenities i'll go to an NBA game.

I hope Cassell is around forever.

Definitely. I don't have much to compare it to (don't travel much for basketball), but I went to the Wake game this year and came back with a heck of a lot of appreciation for how close and cozy and awesome Cassell is. I wouldn't have it any other way.

If I could change one thing about Cassell, it would be the stupid walls at the ends of the court. Cassell would have the ability to be like Cameron Indoor (in terms of intensity and scariness) if the stupid walls weren't there and the students were right on the court. Other than that, its awesome.

Would you like Prys with that?

I separate college courts into three categories

Gyms--The best, and Cassell is one of the best gyms in the country
Stadiums--Like the Dean Dome, huge, cool but not as crazy as gyms
Arenas--Lame. They look nice and the seats are cushioned but that's not what college basketball is about.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Just for fun, and mostly out of boredom, I went over to Allen's 247 page and read some of the stuff about his transfer process. The UVA board is hilarious. They go from 100% convinced that he's gonna be a Hoo and Buzz has no legit shot at actually landing him to happy they don't have to deal with him and convinced they're better off without him instantaneously. Pretty stoked to see what he can do once the NCAA lets him on the floor. Dude can rock a bow tie though.

Hudson's drive at the buzzer- Credit to a Hoo for breaking this down...

J Peterman missed the call. A clear foul but yes, tough to call at that point in the game.

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,

I agree that it's tough call. I think it's the difference is between "could" have been called and "should" have been called. In that situation you're probably not getting a call with what appears to be fairly innocent contact. Especially when compared to calls that should have gone against Okafor.

But one could make the argument that a foul is a foul regardless of the situation.

I have a sneaky feeling that these close losses we've had this year would be close wins with one more year of experience and development. What Buzz has done just during the course of this season is nothing short of impressive.

Honorable mention goes to Satchel Pierce whose heart grew three sizes last night, and not just because of swelling from all those elbows he ate from Okafor.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

But mostly from all those elbows he ate from Okafor.

I tell you what, I will always say within myself that Jahlil Okafor will enter the draft early so as not to see Satchel Pierce anymore after this season.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

If I had one wish it would be that all those Hokie season ticket holders who sold their tickets to Duke fans had to spend a boot camp week with Buzz. Our players are giving max effort. Its a shame some of our fans can't do the same.

Deltahokie

There were Duke fans in the student section.

That was puzzling. I would have expected to see that 20 years ago but not now.

There were at least 2. Down the stretch, the cameras kept zooming in on them as they stood perfectly still while VT student students went nuts around them.

It. Was. Awesome.

We put the K in Kwality

Those 2 were right in front of me. No idea how they got there. Fought the temptation to throw them over the rail all night. Figured that wouldn't be a good showing of Hokies Respect.

For all you know, they could be grad students after having gone to Duke undergrad

That being said, if they're undergrads and never attended Duke, fuck em and they deserve every ounce of ribbing one can dish over the course of the game.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

If you are a Duke undergrad / Hokies Grad student, your alliance is neutral as long as you are in the "Cassell Guarded" student section.

Tweedy can run like a dadgum antelope or whatever. I like to use scalded dog. Do antelopes lumber? Cheetah, OK. He runs like a cheetah. He's fast. - Bud Foster

I know many people who went to VT undergrad and NCSU for graduate school who are some of the biggest Hokie fans I know, who proudly go to State-VT games in Hokie gear in the student section. They are as far from neutral as it gets. So no, I don't expect anyone to be neutral when it comes to rooting for their undergrad school while in graduate school. As I said, if this is the case for those kids, more power to 'em and hope they enjoyed the game. However, if they're just Duke bandwagoners, then the hell with em.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

However, if they're just Duke bandwagoners, then the hell with em.

I learned this from my time growing up in North Carolina.
Here is a two step key to tell if Duke bandwagoner or Duke graduate:

Step 1: Wearing Duke Colors/Merchandise and Cheering for team = Duke Bandwagoner
Step 2: Drink Beer

I've heard there is an easier 1 step solution, but can't figure out what it could possibly be. Oh well, I'm going to go get a beer now.

Born and raised in the Triangle, went to Tech and now I'm back working in the Park. Yeah, I know the stereotypes, but while they're funny they're not correct. Wearing Duke colors, cheering for them, drinking beer? Meh... If they're an obnoxious in your face twat about how great Duke is, there's a very good chance said Duke fan got his or her diploma from East Carolina (don't know why, just always seems to be the ECU alumni who bandwagon to Duke). If they cheer for Duke, but for the most part are completely humble about their success, they likely have a Duke diploma on the wall in their office.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I mean I feel like people regularly feel more connection to where they got their undergraduate degree than graduate. My cousin for example did undergrad at Maryland and grad school in Blacksburg, and stuck with Maryland true and through when we played them. I think that's common, I know when I start grad school I'm gonna cheer for the badgers all the time except when the Hokies are involved somehow and I think that's how it should be.

And while I had to watch from afar, it looks like a lot of folks picked up on Buzz's sweater pattern. I saw a lot of Ts and sleeveless Ts. Maybe not the two thousand I originally envisioned after the GT game, but enough for me to enjoy the effort. As for the Cassell, all it has ever needed is the crowd to be a great place for basketball. Wish I could have been there.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Nice article Brian. First of all, let me say the boys played their butts of last night. Their best shooting night I have seen all year. Now, I'm not going to say they deserve to win because they played hard, but they deserve to have aa game officiating fairly. I know Duke gets all the calls, but when Okafor is allowed to to put his shoulder into a guy and move him back 3 feet w/o a foul, that is ridiculous. When Pierce (who played his ass off) fouled out, that play Okafor not once but twice moved him back and then he got called for a touch foul. Even the annoucer said once is enough but twice has to be an offensive foul. If you call Pierce for a foul, then Hudson's drive to the basket at the end of thegame was a foul also. It is hard enough for VT to win 5 on 5, but 8 on 5 is not possible.
I can't wait until next year. Great job guys.

Looks like they went to slightly trimmer jersey's since Lebron left. Just slight though.....

@vtscottyb

Some clueless Duke fan told me today that Tech would forever be irrelevant because Blacksburg sucks and no top in state talent would ever choose Tech over VCU or UVA. (Completely unaware of who Chris Clarke is, obviously.)

Most opposing ACC fans are still laughing at us and consider us a joke right now, which while they may have a point, it's going to be awesome watching them eat their crow in the coming years.
