So in case you don't stalk my timeline (and, I mean, why wouldn't you?) I had a fun interaction during today's UVA game.
I was talking with a friend of a friend who is, unfortunately, a Hoo, and the subject of Cav Man came up. My main question being why is he not just a person in costume? Since, after all, the mascot version of him is just an out-sized version of a regular dude. And they have an actor play him for football games, but not basketball.
Now, the UVA girl says part of it stems from them wanting to keep the identity a secret (apparently one frat supplies all the people that get to be Cav Man because this is UVA we're talking about) but I still don't get it. So I posed the question on Twitter:

I would like to think that all of us would shy away from making rape jokes.
There's a pretty stark difference between rape jokes and highlighting actual events which show the dean's comments to be slightly left of truthful. I was not, and would never be, advocating the former. I would, however, throw a systematic failure by an administration in that administration's face if they chose to take a self-righteous tone as was the case here.
I don't see the purpose in that, but to each their own.
The purpose being that when someone chooses to ignore reality as they climb up on their high horse, they ought to be called on it.

hey now, we just released our own social media jab at them didn't we? she has as much right to live in her delusion and take shots as we do to live in reality and take shots.
There's a difference between taking good-natured jabs at each other's athletic programs and taking vicious, demeaning positions about the academic strength of each institution. College Confidential basically is a message board for elitist nerds who believe the only point of existence is to go to an Ivy League school. Deans at some of the most academically prestigious institutions in the country have vowed to never have people from their offices be associated with that website because of how out of touch the regulars on CC's message boards are with reality...so naturally UVA very publicly has one of their top-raking officials on that website, making ridiclious and unsubstantiated comments about the "academic weakness" of Virginia Tech.
Listen- at the end of the day, I still have respect for UVA alumni, students and the institution at a whole. But it it's people like Dean J who diminish the value of the UVA brand, diminish the Virginia public education system and scare away very intelligent people from UVA because they don't want to be associated with such a perceived level of institutional jackassery.
Like I said before, she can go fuck herself.
ok, changing my position. I have no experience with College Confidential, and it sounds like a place I have no interest to look into. I would be interested in any gems you see from the notorious DeanJ however.

Couldn't find anything from DeanJ worth noting but your point about being "out of touch" is spot on.
Someone called VT one of the most "stressed out and least happy students in the country" and there's quite a bit of attempting to compare UVA at VT's Engineering programs...which had me cracking up.
Delusion knows no bounds like a UVa elitist trying to explain why our engineering program sucks.
I'm really late to the party, but didn't the Huffington Post rank Hokie students top 5 in the nation for just that, the happiest students?

dunno if this was TIC (assume so), but this is not the case. One of my good buddies was Cav man for the last game they played at the Orange Bowl where they crushed Miami 48-0 or something; he wasn't part of any frat.
