I know I would be a lot happier about things if all I really cared about was football. Now, I do love me some football, but I absolutely hate sucking hind teat in the ACC in both basketball programs, and it rankles my posterior that we struggle to compete in baseball.
Right now, they're in control of the burners, at least until Fall. We are improving, I feel good about the future, but right this moment I'm staying pretty humble around my UVer pals.

It's a good thing Brewer and Company came back in the 4th quarter this year to win. Or else we'd be really hurting for digs at UVA sports lately (at large).
I like me some UVA burns, but when you finish the season 7-6 , and UVA nealry won the baseball title and had the #1 seed in the NCAA tourney; it gets tough to mock them.
Well, except for the way they dress, and their unearned sense of entitelment, and their mascot and their every-girl-looks-like-a-soccer-mom-even-though-they-are-still-undergrads student body.
Talking about close wins over LOLUVa is like talking about how many games we lost by a TD or less. Sure it's a valid point, but, a couple years down the road, all people will know about is your record (7-6, bowl win) or the fact that the fighting zimas haven't beaten us for 11 years running.
and YOU, and the Timecop, and their cheese and wine parties after leaving the game at halftime, and their one way streets everywhere, and their fairly awful bar scene.
I don't have any burns, but I will say I wish their success in basketball is showing how annoying their pathetic fan base really is. They simply don't know how to handle success. Any time I think I can pull for them, I just think about their fans and it makes the choice easy.
Why would you think you could ever pull for them? Ugh, anyone who plays UVA is my new second team haha.
Well, the only time I actually tried to pull for them was when I had them going to the Sweet 16 in my bracket last year but I only lasted like 3 minutes of their first tourney game before I caved, haha.
Totally agree with you. I couldn't pull for them if the fate of the civilized world depended on it. I want them to lose every game in every sport in the most humiliating way possible. Their insufferable fans will make sure this position never changes.
There is a story some of my old Hokie pals told me about a game in the 70's when the Russian National basketball team was playing an exhibition game with the boohoos, I believe in Richmond. A bunch of Hokies got together and went to the game wearing T shirts that said "Better Red than UVA!"
This, I believe, pretty much sums it up.

Pains me to say it, but even then. Hate them incrementally less than the hoos. Close to WVA, but that dislike fades with time. The UVA thing is timeless and will never change.

In truth though, if it were any other team besides UVA, I would very much like their brand of basketball. The fans are just unbearable.
Their brand of basketball is awful just like them. It is slow and boring as hell. Does it work? Yes. But it is the worst goddamn brand of basketball ever.
Man, I wish I could go there with you, but I can't. As much as I hate them, and as boring as their game is, I'd still love to have their record and their success. We also need them to keep playing that pack line crap...I think Buzz has a plan that will defeat it when we get the hosses.
Truth is, if it was our team playing it, with their degree of success, I'd be defending it to the high heavens.

This is their best team in yrs, yet they had their hands full twice with a smaller and outmanned tech team. Wait til buzz has a roster full of his guys, the football field wont be the only place we kick their ass.
I bartend in Roanoke, so u get a lot of UVA fans. Tonight, was golden. Yeah, they swept us in basketball this year. A guy starts a bit of smack saying this and that. I have to be a bit careful of my manners so I'm taking it in stride.
Enter my new best friend, guy in a WVU (shudder) hoodie at the golden moment comments with "yeah, but haven't they beaten you guys in every other sport this year?". He then goes with in the " past month wrestling and indoor track last week"
Then, "also, my 10 year old asked me this year if uva had EVER beaten VT in football, I'm going to repeat that word for you, ever. Enjoy this year and maybe next, because the way that new coach has them boys playing on the hardwood they'll be notching their belts in basketball pretty soon"

Something about how it's harder for Duke to recruit good players because of their academic standards but they still manage to get great players and beat UVA in basketball...and football. And Tony Bennett will never be as great of a coach as Coach K, and blah blah blah along those lines. That ought to get them worked up.

Basketball is fun, and we will get better. But when it comes down to it, the Hoos can have basketball. Also, besides Kentucky, college basketball as a whole is kinda weak this year. (Yes UVa is a solid #2)
Football is what matters and its really what matters to Hoo fans as well. That's why they gloat so much about basketball and baseball, they try to make up for what they are missing in football. Uva wants to point out what every other sport of theirs is doing besides football. Maybe its just me and my preference for football (I do love bball as well), but a school is measured more in the eyes of the nation athletically by what your football team does. That is unless you are Kentucky, Indiana, UNC, Duke, Kansas, and a few others. Uva doesn't have that tradition and power, so they are more remembered for the joke the football team is rather than the flash in the pan the bball program is. And honestly, as much as I hate UVa, I would rather them win in bball than Duke and Carolina. Especially the Tar Heels...
