According to his agent, Jason Bernstein, linebacker Jason Worilds has elected to hang up his cleats and retire from the NFL.

You dont realize how important religion is to someone until you see them walk away from $7-8 million a year for it
This had something to do with religion?
I don't know how to embed tweets but today Worilds even tweeted at the guy who said this was due to a "spiritual awakening" with a question mark. Sounds like this wasn't the reason. Pretty bizarre story
Be interesting to see the details behind this. Read an article this afternoon that he wasn't getting any interest on the FA market.
Link? While he probably wasn't gonna get top dollar, 7-8 million is still a lot to walk away from...

I don't know...this sounds like a writer making assumptions and not reading the tea leaves correctly.
Perhaps the lack of interest and in scheduling visits was driven by Worlids?
Mike Greenburg just said he had an offer on the table from the Titans.
If he walked away because he was happy with the money he made and didn't want to suffer long term health repercussions, possibly lost his passion for the game, power to him.
Bring him in as the QC coach on the defensive side.
You mean a lb coach?
Quality control... much like Warren but for defense. No room for another true LB coach.
We won't bring him in because he doesn't say "Virginia Tech" in his Sunday/Monday Night Football Intro. /sarcastica
Well then Kam has no chance since he does not say DBU! ;)
I always half expected him to bust into Earl Thomas' intro and say "NO! You DO NOT call Texas DBU! You do not get to call it that."
"THE DBU"
This really surprises me. I'm a big Steelers fan and have enjoyed watching him develop and get better each year. This was his first year as a full time starter and he was solid. I was hoping that the Steelers would resign him and he would continue to get better. Not sure why he's stepping away from a lot of money at the prime of his career. Good luck to him in whatever he decides to do though.
I could be reading into this too literally but he chose the words "After much thought & consideration I have chosen to step away from football as I have opted to pursue other interests." He never used the word retirement FWIW. He is still really young and has always been known as a workout warrior. At age 27 he could take two years off pursue other interests and come right back before he even turns 30. He also has the luxury of being pretty much major injury free at this point in his career. Just some food for thought.
I kinda thought the same thing....
No say it aint so Adjepong!
speaking of changing names...wasn't Dadi Nicholas originally Wedley Estime? or is that Luther Maddy, pretty sure it was one of the two Delray guys we got in that class
Dadi.
New trend: retiring while you still are upright. Patrick Willis retired as well before he hit 30. Guess if you have been wise with your money and have enough to provide for you and yours, why not leave before your brain is soup.
yup really cant blame these guys for wanting to be able to live a happy life without a ton of post injuries reoccurring.
Not at all
I can see that for sure in the Patrick Willis retirement, he has had some more serious injuries over the last few years. Let's not forget he has made a considerable amount of money during his time in the NFL. But, Jason has been relatively injury free and certainly has been major injury free, other than some shoulder issues. He also hasn't made near the money Patrick Willis has, this was his time to get paid and make that jump in his overall wealth. Jason's lack of injuries thus far, age, and timing in terms of being right at the doorstep of his highest earning potential for his career is what makes his announcement seem more strange than the Willis announcement.
He didn't even have to be that wise with the money. Alone, his contract last year was more than I will earn in my lifetime. If I averaged $100k/yr over a 45 year working life I would earn $4.5 Mil. He has basically retired at the age of 26, I would if I could.
So....yeah...
Locker was really the only surprising retirement to me of the 3, who would not take $1 Mil+ a year to hold a clipboard and be a camp arm?
I trust absolutely nothing that JLC reports.
JW has a great Twitter handle.
I think Worilds was questioning the verbiage "spiritual awakening" and not the report of his pursuit of faith.
Whatever his reasons, I wish him the best. Money ain't everything.
He made 9 million dollars last year or about 4.5 million after taxes. That should be enough if invested properly to live the rest of your life doing whatever you wanted to do. Its hard to enjoy life when your body is destroyed .
Don't forget cut to agent, any loans he took while not making that much, insurance cost since he won't have a job to provide it. While doable it doesn't make him "weathly" in the, doesn't have to watch his investments etc.
I thought that once they were vested after 3 years the insurance was paid for.
Martel: "look, I know that five million a
year sounds like a lot of money. But I gotta pay ten percent to my agent, five percent to my lawyer, plus alimony, child support..."
Wilson: "You got any idea what insurance on
a Ferrari costs, motherfu...!"
(Sorry, I always think about this when someone brings up a pro athelete's salary).
Great movie!
Good for him. I don't know his reasons, and don't need to. He was fun to watch as a Hokie and I enjoyed seeing him develop into a very good player in the NFL, even if it was for the Stillers. Here's to his continued success wherever life takes him next!
Is the Pittsburgh team moving to West Virginia and adopting a new mascot:
You do realize that the moonshine capitol of the world is in Virginia right?
No, I didn't. I could have gone with any of Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, and West Virginia but I figured that I'd give it to WV since they're really only known for Moonshine and Coal while the other states have things besides those two that they're known for. The first thing or two I think of about the states are:
Virginia: Home
Kentucky: Horse Racing
Tennessee: Music and Close to Home
North Carolina: Outer Banks, First Powered Flight
West Virginia: Coal and Moonshiners
So it was more a case of the other candidates having better things to be named after than moonshiners.
Pretty sure Franklin County, VA has the highest production in the country.
2 of my suitemates from freshmen year grew up there and man did they have some good stuff.
Yep. This is also where the movie Lawless took place. The Thrillbillies also sing a song titled Franklin County Moonshine
Wait are you me?
HorseOffATreadmill perhaps?
After knocking back a few mason jars of good ole Franklin County VA moonshine it's HorseFellOffATreadmill.
heheh nice
Errr, my friend, you may never have had any moonshine at all if you think you could knock back a few mason jars of any of it from anywhere at all and remain in the land of the living. It'd be more like "call the backhoe man, we got a horse to bury".
I always say, it's for sippin, not for shootin.
well he is a horse. maybe a few jars is what it takes
Maybe so, and were that the case, they'd not have to bother to bury him, he'd be thoroughly pickled and preserved.
Normally, when I talk to non-native WVians about my home state, they ask me two things consistently: "Are you from near Snowshoe?" and "Have you been rafting on the New?".
...Have you?
Some damn good trout fishin', too.
Well i'm proud of our moonshine heritage..so I give NOTHING to those coal miners!! lol.
I'm think the threshold for receiving retiree benefits is around four years. You can't blame these guys for cashing out young. They get a pension and health benefits, and they get to enjoy a higher quality of life and overall level of health.
Local paper today says Worilds was disappointed with the offers he was receiving. Predicted he will play somewhere this year.
Did your local paper quote a source? As I said earlier in the thread, I'm wouldn't be so sure the lack of interest wasn't more on Worlids' side. It's not as though sportswriters have never thrown uninformed, presumptive analysis into their "reporting"...
I realize some teams will need help later in the year and might pay some sort of premium, but will the difference be that great -- especially considering the paychecks he'd have foregone?
No sources. The gist of the article was that Worilds expected a lot of demand; but did not get the interest he expected and found that his idea of his value was higher than the teams were offering. Supposedly was still negotiating right up until he decided to retire. Admittedly speculation by the reporter; but he thought the retirement was more a strategy than a commitment.
No info on what teams he was supposedly talking with? No quotes from anyone involved in the supposed discussions? No quote from Worilds (other than perhaps the one that essentially says the exact opposite)?
Sounds more like analysis based on assumption and speculation through the lens of a skeptic rather than real reporting.
This article from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette says he's retiring to devote more time to the Jehovah's Witnesses.
oh man...this is funny...I don't care who you are...lol.
Can't stop watching and laughing. Guess I'm going to hell.
nah the "witnesses" don't believe in hell. At least the one who tried to convert me claimed that.
I guess this is one of those times that momma was talking about with that whole "if you can't say something nice" routine.
