VT Head Coach Buzz Williams Coaches Girl At Timeout

Buzz Williams is a different breed.

This guy is going to be GREAT as the face of the basketball program. I don't care if he barely cracks .500 next year, let this guy get going and we will reap the benefits. Trust in Buzz.

The Dude Abides

Would any of the hall of fame bound coaches in the ACC do this? Unlikely. I want Buzz as the face of this program for as long as possible.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

This guy could legitimately be the Frank Beamer of our basketball program.

Wait so why wasn't he coaching the team?

I mean, this is great, but...why wasn't he coaching the team?

Buzz really doesn't coach much during the timeouts. He leaves that to his assistants quite often.

That's all good. But when I watch the video, some of the players watch the free throws as much as they watch the huddle.

I hate to agree because I thought it was a very nice moment but Buzz should be focused on the team.

1 point game with the season on the line, he should be in the huddle even if his assistants are doing most of the talking during the timeouts.

With our record, the season wasn't on the line. We weren't a bubble team. We weren't even playing for a spot in the NIT. Our season was ending at that tournament. We weren't winning it all. Buzz's style throughout the entire season has been rather hands-off during most of the timeouts. He tends to spend that time talking to the officials while his coaches design plays. Buzz put together his coaching staff for that exact reason.

Unless we're inbounding the ball. And then he just draws up a play he just made up and the players trust 100% that it'll work.

Talking to refs =/= coaching a little girl in a free throw competition, the players were distracted by it and that undermined the coaching done in the huddle.

And no, we're not going to win it all or go to the NIT but still, I don't think what he did was 100% kosher.

Okay, you have to understand that Buzz didn't call the girl out to come shoot free throws. If the players are distracted by an event the tournament is hosting during a timeout, that's their problem, not Buzz's. Personally, I wouldn't have cared if the entire team got around the girl and cheered her on. Why? Because there's far more to life than any sport and everyone knew that their season was ending on that court. So take the 30 seconds, get a breather, and get back out there and have fun.

Neither team was hitting anything, and you can't start pressing and playing too hard. I trust Buzz's in game psychology

I am well aware that Buzz didn't call her out and that it occurred during a media timeout.

We're not going to agree on this.

If it were an extended media time out and players were milling around drinking water and nothing basketball related was happening, fine. I just don't think it sends the right message to the players or the assistant coaches when the HC isn't paying full attention in that situation.

It was during a media timeout. So might you now have a change of mind regarding how he chooses to coach the team? Even so, if you watch the video, the only people distracted by it are some of the GA's and the fans. Every other player's head is down looking at the board his assistant is drawing on.

I'm well aware that it was during a media timeout. I'm realizing my post wasn't overly clear. Lets say it was just after halftime and the team is doing layup lines and warming up. Coaches are milling around. If Buzz wants to talk to a little girl then, fine but no, I do not have a change of mind.

I think a head coach of a basketball team who is earning north of $2M per year and is trying to instill discipline into a program that is in desperate need of it should be paying attention to his assistant coaches while they instruct the team.

woah woah woah! We already had this issue with football, basketball needs to learn from their mistakes not repeat them.

too soon?

I laughed, and then hated myself.

It is toeing the line for me, but I had to take out-of-context advantage of phrasing

Or he could just trust his assistants. He's known them for years. Before VT. I doubt he needs to micromanage them.
As far as the team goes. Game 31. And he coaches all of every other game. So hard in fact, he has to change clothes at the half.

One could say he should be coaching at the half instead of changing clothes for comfort and appearances sake. Since he must coach every second of every game. Why even have assistants if they can help take the pressure off an already intense job.

Yeah, not at all what I'm saying.

My point is that I wouldn't appreciate it if I were an assistant trying to coach my team in a 1 point game and the head coach wasn't paying attention.

That's enough discussion on this topic, which I frankly don't even care that much about.

The video is misleading. He only coaches her for about 3 attempts before returning to the huddle. The video just shows the same thing over and over again from different angles. It wasn't like he spent the entire timeout with her.

Ah, this is good info.

For what it's worth, I don't think it's BAD that he was coaching the girl, like I said, I think it's great. I also really like that he has assistants that he trusts to run the timeout (much in the same way that a very good teacher can relinquish teaching to his students, and they then also grow as teachers).

But I did find it odd. I guess this is one of those cases where if I pay too much attention to this detail I lose the big picture.

Bilas speculated that Buzz wanted to take pressure off the team in hopes that seeing him relaxed would help them loosen up.

I kinda like it. He's hyper intense 99.99% of the time. Close to the end of the second game in 2 nights, the team's clearly running on fumes, he's not gonna yell at them. He knows they're playing as hard as they can. So he shows trust in them and let's them take a timeout to recoup. It's not that he gave up on winning, I think he just realized they couldn't take any more right then. He has assistants, too.
Popovich has done this occasionally with the Spurs, just leaving Tony Parker to talk to the team (or refusing to talk because he's mad, but that's another story). It's just a different coaching technique. If you show faith in your team, I think they can take a lot of confidence from it.

That's my take, at least

I agree with this. If there was something he knew the guys needed to hear, he would have been right in there with their full attention. This was probably just as much of an opportunity for the guys to catch their breath and clear their heads as it was an opportunity to coach 'em up and get the next play in.

Because she might be the next best player on the VT squad?

"How you doin', Randy?"

OR... doing some advance recruiting for the women's team.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I knew this would come about.....

WE HAVE PLAYERS WHO WON'T WALK IN SNOW FOR A WORKOUT AND A COACH WHO DOESN'T WANT TO COACH OUR TEAM DURING A GAME. THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END, JUST GET RID OF THE BASKETBALL TEAM ALL TOGETHER. AND FIRE BEAMER. /sarcastica

PLUS SHE DOESNT EVEN MAKE A FREE THROW. THIS IS ALL WEAVER'S FAULT!

So you're saying Buzz was just as effective coaching her to shoot free throws as he was the team?

[ducking]

Wait, what?

that actually improved as the season went along

Keep calm, Gobble on

I mean, idk how I feel about this. Yes it's nice for sure, but we're in a one point game in a win a go home situation. Idk tbh I'm not on the Buzz hype train. I'll wait until I see the results in the win loss column before I catch a ride

They'll really get after ya

So what you're saying is, you're a bandwagon fan?

Unless we ran the entire tournament, we were going home anyway.

This was also during a media timeout, the thing is like 5 minutes long. If they had enough time to run a free throw shooting contest out on the floor I am sure Buzz had enough time to get what he wanted to say across and leave the little nuances to assistants. That girl needed the coaching more than the players, gotta keep your elbow under the ball!

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Has anyone considered that, knowing the game could come down to free throws, Buzz actually was coaching the team??? Instead of singing any one player out, maybe he just told the guys to play cool and watch him. Buzz then goes over to the girl and improves her form, to indirectly remind the team! That's why they were all "distracted." His brilliance is transcendent

So I figured it out. There is a portion of the media timeout clip missing! Jim Weaver called the ACC and had them burn the 3 minutes before this clip and the minute and 30 seconds after. In the first three minutes Buzz spent 36 seconds individually coaching each player currently on the floor, he then spent around 30 seconds coaching free throws to strangers (coaching version of OCDC), followed by returning to the huddle to spend approximately 45 seconds listening in and then, finished the timeout with a stretching and hydration portion to prepare for waking up Miami fans. Weaver is clearly trying to give the new coaching hire a bad rep to take away from the amazing press his successor received for hiring Buzz.

I'm not sure what OCDC is, but I imagine a bolt of lightning going straight through the middle of it.

OCDC is an AC/DC cover band that is really analysis anal about having everything in a very particular way.

Damn Samsung keyboard. Still getting used to its overaggressive autocorrect.

I was playing half moronic and hoping that you, fine sir, would catch the ACDC rocking knowledge overpowering the average delusional fan's faux medical knowledge. Leg!

Short, boring side story: This mare takes me to the Billy Joel concert a couple months ago here in State College and like 3/4 of the way through the show he says something along the lines of, 'So we've got this guy, [roadie], who has been with us a long time and we'd like to make one of his dreams come true and let him sing a song. You'll have to bear with us, it's kind of a religious song'. Roadie comes out and they dive into Highway to Hell.

He did the same thing in DC last summer. Almost word for word.

Wait, what?

Nice! Same song?

Yes. I had seen a video of a performance at MSG where he brought out Brian Johnson to do "You Shook Me", so wasn't sure what to expect.

It was still pretty cool though.

Wait, what?

Its funny that the general public thought it was cool and very personable, yet some of our fanbase thinks he should have been coaching the team.
It is great PR for an identity-less basketball program. Did any game highlights make a must-see moment?

If we win that game, he a genius/nice guy/innovator.

Instead we lose and Tony (PTI) calls him out for not coaching.

Whatevs!

We put the K in Kwality

Even Wilbon called him out for his hatred of VT before.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Fuck Michael Wilbon. His wife is an UVa alum, he takes as many cheap shots at VT as he can.

Yeah, Wilbon is a card carrying Hokie hater. I still enjoy PTI though.

Buzz's response to this was along the lines of "Why shouldn't I? It's not like I'm going to tell the team something they haven't heard before and I trust that they know what they need to do."

Honestly, I have no problem with Buzz doing that at that particular moment. Now, if we're in the semi-final game or something, I would be adamantly not okay with it..

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

He should've been telling his players to "make more shots and get taller" /s

We put the K in Kwality

FN internet Age, Looking at this 10 seconds in isolation and being critical of Buzz not coaching his team is absurd!

Got to focus on bigger picture, Buzz is the best Coach VT has seen in a long time.

Not going to question what Motivated Buzz for a second. LOVE what I am seeing happen with VT basketball.

Next year VT will be better, and the Next ....

Other than Buzz who would we have in Blacksburg coaching Basketball?
