Any chance Brewer grew and inch or 2 and gained 20 lbs in the offseason? I think a lot of his spotty play was due to his small size and the many vicious hits he took. I Honestly though he was going to have to be carted off the field in the * game last year when he took that double smash and the angles he went into would have made a contortionist blush. Best of luck to whoever wins it, my hope is that someone really seizes it and holds it well enough all season so there is not widespread fanbase calling for #2...

He must not have been exposed to military chow (particularly some MREs). D-2 has nothing on that experience. Then there is the long transition back to regular food which is always fun...

Kinda. He was the victim of an assault that sent him to the hospital for a while. His "arrest" was really just him and Trimble lighting a bottle rocket in a parking lot. No one was injured or anything and I believe the charges were dropped eventually.

short of a boatload of injuries I do not see Lawson playing on anything other than the scout team this year. If he was an early enrollee and participated in spring drills maybe, but not showing up till summer hurts him. Kid needs to bulk up a little anyway.

My goodness, try saying something like this on 247s board and they run you out of the building. The kid's talented, but adjusting to the speed of the college game and learning the offense in just a few weeks is a tall task to say the least.

Michael Brewer was a VERY consistent QB in 2014. He was just consistently mediocre. That's not a knock on him personally, I just mean the guy's passer rating was lackluster but held very steady game to game over the course of the season. The question isn't if Brewer can be more consistent (that would be damn near impossible compared to what his stats show last season) but rather, can he simply be better. We need a better completion percentage and YPA out of him.
As for not having the swagger late in the season that he had early on... In the Virginia game, after taking a beating that would make Eli Roth cringe, this sumbitch SKIPPED to the line of scrimmage to take the game-winning kneeldown. If we could inject Brewer's swagger into the other 21 starters, we would straight up murder people on the field.

Game to game there was statistical consistency but within the game there was not.
From making perfectly executed cringeworthy passes such as the 3rd down needle threader on the run over top the LB to Rogers on 3rd down at OSU to extend the drive, head scratchers to the opposing secondary with no one there in the same game.
That's the consistency he's talking about. Consistently inconsistent is what you see.

These were, by and large, miscommunications or route errors by the receivers.
However, I get your point. That's not consistency, though, at least the way I define it. You'll always have bad throws, mistakes, misreads, etc. Every quarterback has them, and I don't think Brewer does it any worse than a typical FBS level starting QB. The issue is, is Brewer's upside sufficient to overcome those inevitable mistakes? And based on 2014, the answer was very nearly no.
Can Brewer get better. That's the question. He's already improved in not making the bad throws; TD to INT ratio showed that over the season. But he needs to be better when he makes the good throws. Better completion percentage, more yards per attempt. (And the former shall obviously beget the latter.) If he can't do that, his job might be in danger.

VT's record was 7-3 in games when Brewer threw an interception and 0-3 in games where he didn't throw one. If you look at multiple interception games vs single interception games, Tech was 2-2 in multiple interception games vs. 5-1 in single interception games, so Brewer throwing 1 interception per game seems to be the sweet spot that leads to VT winning. I'm officially suggesting a planned deep lofting throw into double coverage in the 4th quarter of every game in which we aren't leading.

There will always be someone looking at #2 and wondering out loud if they would be a better option.
I always feel better having a solid #2.
Sometimes the highlight of my day.
Only 1?

I hope there is an improvement in line play so whomever is at QB consistently has more than 1.5 seconds to throw the ball.
On my initial look at your post I saw 15 seconds, and was like... Damn. I bet our guys could really wear down some corners with that kind of time.
Who is Matt Hill? By his "official" measurements he is a big kid. Future TE?
Walk-on from Salem. The new Brian Rody.
Well said
Wow not a good comparison. Didn't Rody get beat up pretty bad one year and then get arrested another year?

I hope they decide to redshirt Lawson, time this year to see what Ford and Durkin can do.

This is the only Hokie site I frequent for a reason or two...
Yeah, I only recently started clicking through the boards on some other sites... Then quickly realized why I don't. I, uh, get em for the articles.
Imagine what 2011 might have looked like had Tyrod redshirted. Maybe more that getting jobbed in the Sugar Bowl.
That is almost a certainty. If it doesn't happen, it means we've got a superstar under center for the next couple of seasons in Lawson.
So, win-win.
Love the article, Andy. The title, not so much.

So, to modify the old theme, we now have #armpuntingiswinning?
#armpunterswag
Some of Brewer's bad throws are just physics. He's short, and linemen get taller every year.
It's not like he can hit "Defrost" for the windshield. Dude can't see down the middle of the field most of the time.
This.
