I know that the softball team doesn't get much pub here but I just wanted to give them a shout-out for a great start to their season. They are 21-3, ranked in the top 30 and just completed a 5-0 tournament in Hawaii this past weekend. They have 3 dynamite pitchers ( one frosh and 2 Jrs) who are holding the opposition to a measly .196 batting average. They have pounded out 34 HRs in 24 games and have a team average of almost .300. Scott Thomas has the girls playing at a high level and they are fun to watch. They have, I think, 6 games on their schedule coming up where they play on ESPN3 four times and ESPNU twice.
Having been a coach for fastpitch rec and traveling tournament teams, I just wanted to say congrads to their team on their efforts so far. I go to almost all their home games and the close-by ones like at Radford.
Between baseball and softball this weekend, I have enjoyed watching the Hokies bring it on.
Kudos to VT Softball

Way to go Lady Hokies!!!
Might not get much pub anywhere, but I know I'm paying attention. Keep it up, ladies, we're cheering for you.
Love seeing Hokie softball winning. My niece is a softball hotshot back home. I keep trying to convince her to send some film but she has her heart set on CA schools.
way to go Lady Hokies!!
My heart was set on a CA school back in the day... then I came to Blacksburg.
that's kind of my plan. I'm thinking about flying back to take her over there for a look next summer. She is only a Sophomore now, but has played varsity as Freshman and took 2nd in state last year.
Great Job ladies!
Those HR's though.......
Before the season started I mentioned somewhere that pitching might be the issue holding back this team. Well.....I was wrong. Great job, ladies. Keep it up!
Considering they only had 59 all of last season the HR numbers are awesome.
On that note, I thing the single season record for a player is 15. Mericka currently has 10.
Yeah, Hopefully Mericka can stay healthy. She has had a tough go of it the last couple years. Has been absolutely crushing the ball this season along with McGoldrick and Davenport.
The Trio have combined for 19 of Tech's 34 HR, 17 of 36 doubles, and 69 of 135 RBIs. The other crazy stat is that they have gotten on base by walk or HBP 41 times already. McGoldrick has been hit by pitch 6 times in only 81 plate appearances.
I'm surprised they aren't more highly ranked
Strength of schedule is hurting them
This leads right into the question I was going to ask after looking at their schedule and seeing they dropped 2 games to UNC already. Do you have a sense of how good the team is in the scheme of the ACC? Nationally?
Not really at this point as they haven't gotten into the ACC slate much. There are only two ranked teams ahead of them in the rankings from the conference. Think its Notre Dame and Florida State so ranking wise they are third for now.
Schweet! Congratz Lady Hokies!
When's the team's bikini calendar come out? ;-)
Amen.
er,
