Tech holds their pro day today, March 18th. I assume unfortunately like the ones in the past it's closed to the media. But if you get any #sources with info or find articles post them here. Also why does VT close the pro day to the media when many other schools open them up? Even ESPN/Fox sports shows done from other pro days.

I didn't want to start a new topic for this because it might already be common knowledge, but VTfootball has a snapchat account that is being updated with tons of spring workout videos. Pretty cool to see. I wouldn't be surprised if they had some pro day stuff too
The last clip they posted was Logan practicing his drop back. I guess he's around too
And yes it does have some pro day stuff. Caleb Farris with 22 bp reps
Gibson announced he'll have private workouts for the Cowboys, Broncos, Panthers and Cardinals
The Panthers is about the best place for an OT that will be fighting for a roster spot. Seeing as how Michael Oher is the best one on the team currently.
At age 33 I refuse to join Snapchat....even for football.
this...
to be honest I'm considering Snapchat & Instagram purely for keeping up w/ football
I guess I could go that route as well...I just feel like its for teenyboppers.
But to be honest I don't know much about the app.
You can use it however you want. That is like saying the internet is for teenyboppers.
Thanks so much for your helpful comment...
Well, considering it wasn't supposed to be helpful, I'd say mission accomplished.
Did somebody say Mission Accomplished.
ohh god looking at these hit me in the gut ohhhh
Meh your loss
Or is that a loss of market for the VT? I'm 31 and refuse to join several of those things. VT has to market itself to all fans not just the under 24 crowd.
For every 1 fan who refuses to download it because it's for people younger than them, there are probably 100 young high school athletes who download and follow it because social media is powerful. Sure, it's a dumb app, but it is one of the most frequently used apps by youth currently. VT may want to market themselves to more than just the young crowd, but you have to capture them early if you want to stay with them. Naturally, as a VT alum, you will likely stay a fan no matter what. But if you have no affiliation yet, things like this can draw you in. It can be used for recruiting or just spreading a little inside look at the team.
Good, I'm glad Tech got it. They ALSO, IN ADDITION TO, IN CONJUNCTION WITH, need to market to people who don't have nor want it. I'm also not an alum of VT. Family did I went to VCU because they had the homeland security major. VCU has no football team so no divided loyalty problems either.
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Hokiesports, beat writers/news media. Pick your poison. Is there a particular medium you have in mind that would work well for someone such as yourself?
All of them. VT needs to be on every medium, every platform. I lived in Columbus Ohio for years everything was Buckeyes all the damn time. VT needs that. Whit has done an awesome job getting the Hokie Club and teams to really pay attention to social media accounts but you can't do that by ignoring other media forms. Except for Berman just ignore him.
I'm sorry, but I fail to understand what you want. VT is on every single one of the platforms I mentioned. What specifically do you want that isn't already offered? You're taking issue with the fact that they are now utilizing Snapchat, something I'm seeing professional sports teams doing as well as part of their media marketing plans, and I don't understand why when every other base that I can think of is covered. So again, what specific medium do you desire that isn't already offered and utilized?
They are on those platforms but don't show all the same information. Take for example the pro day workouts, they posted video to snapchat but not other platforms? That's my issue, they need to find new platforms as fast as they come out but don't forget about the ones prior.
I think you misunderstand the point of Snapchat. You wouldn't post an article on Instagram no more than you would post <10 seconds of video on Facebook. Perhaps VT is compiling video footage to be released later, but when it comes to instantaneous release of a less than 10 second video, Snapchat is where people go for it because that's what you expect there. You either get a picture for limited viewing purposes or a short video.
Exactly. Fireman you should really download and look at the different platforms before you say what they should and shouldn't do
Really vine videos seem to post just fine to Facebook and Twitter. I posted a 10 second video the other day to facebook of my kids. My point is information should be cross platform and method. What if VT only sent info to newspaper beat writers how would you view that?
I don't think you understand the purpose of snapchat. Either way you're the one that's limiting yourself by being stubborn about new things
Your right as the consumer I should just accept however they want to present it. /s
You're simultaneously wanting pro day coverage while ignoring the forms of media that did cover it all because "I'm 31"
One form of media is not "coverage" would you be ok if that form was just a newspaper write up?
I would like them to mail pictures (Kodak/Insta-chrome) via USPS of every win in every sport to me!
I guess I just don't get it, why should I expect VT to use as many forms of branding as possible.
They are. You just don't like them
Really outside of this thread on TKP, which I started, and AB doing the great work he always does I have seen nothing about pro day from any official VT Twitter or FB account, I get emails all the time from the Hokie Club and athletic dept, nothing about this. I've seen one tweet by a coach about what NFL teams were there. VT needs every dollar from every donor they can get. The best way to do,that is branding and communication. Whit has taken the dept ten years ahead in a single year in doing this. But you can't ignore other forms of media. VT should have allowed sports reporters and networks to cover the event and streamed it live on their own website, there should have been updates on participants and drills on FB and Twitter. These are all small things that add up when keeping the money flowing, ie keeping donors involved.
My problem with your complaint is that you want more but fail to see what is already available. Mike Barber and Andy Bitter were both tweeting about the little pieces of information they were able to gather. Thomas Guerry, a member of our coaching staff, was tweeting about the event as well as several other coaches. But if Twitter isn't your preferred avenue, you can see where a picture or two were posted to Instagram, though I can't remember if it was by VT Football or Beamerball. And if Instagram is still too much to follow, you'll see that Bitter wrote a blog post on the event. There's even a video posted on Hokiesports http://www.hokiesports.com/videos/#!/m-footbl. I get that you want instantaneous information, but realize that you are likely in the minority. Of those that are graduating and going to be looked at for NFL teams, we don't have anyone to create a media frenzy around as they just workout. They aren't doing anything special. Not many people want to just watch an athlete who is likely to be drafted after the 5th round, signed as a UFA or even not signed at all run routes, jump, do lifts, and show off what they can do physically. That's like saying that someone is going to want to watch every single practice as they are doing up-downs and wind sprints. Sure, someone might want to, but the general population of fans isn't concerned with it. They'll read the recap and watch the "highlights" that have been edited into a smooth flowing presentation that isn't 10 seconds of choppy, low quality video, but that's it. So let's just stop complaining over what they aren't doing because they are doing a lot as it is and you're using pro day, a very insignificant event in the grand scheme, as a benchmark for comparison.
I feel like when my older son says I'm old. Which is my point. I have friends, children, a career, and other priorities that are more important to me than being than on the latest "e-thing". I love VT, and want to follow them in all sport (go ladies softball!), but TKP is about as Techno as I get. I still own a kodak camera, a to DVD video camera, and an iPhone, and probably give more to VT than most under 40 grads. I enjoy having the VT Bio major calling on behalf of the college of Engineering to ask for a donation, and my wife loves the sandals they sent last year. Know your audience, their value (both under grad, students, grads, and non-attending fans), and target accordingly. I'm on TKP for a reason, and not on stuff that targets my kids for a reason. edit - remove drunk comment.
Yeah, this.
I've got a couple careers, kids and other things to manage.
How many forms of communication do I need to get and constantly monitor in order to stay abreast?
How many different twitter follows do I need? Every coach, every player and every VT Atlerics account plus Sands and Whit just to stay up with what happens to get posted on twitter then do the same for every Instagram, FB, Vines, etc, etc, etc?
Businesses taxes were due last week, personal taxes next month and state taxes the following month, the kids have been out of school every week since before Christmas and I'm trying to get prepped for the festival season.
I'd like to keep up with all that but there's no way to do that and keep up with the workload.
It's not being too old, it's having a life that's needs response from me, I don't need one more thing that requires my additional response.
Whit has yet to use my carrier pigeon service and it's making me feel quite disenfranchised...
hokie07ME, get with the times. I have them send a raven
They only joined so the could send out Wang pictures to the other athletic departments
Wang pics
Careful not to send out the Wang pic with Fullwood.
Those are some big Wangs...
That's what she said...
literally
Black Gloves Ed!
Snapchat is just another medium to see VT football. It doesn't take away from anything VT was already doing. Social media is important for recruiting. Social media isn't this evil or stupid thing that the older generation sees
You can still keep up on VT things the way they've always been done, press conferences, interviews, etc. Nothing is changing from that aspect
I have yet to see the other platforms have the pro day media added: as of 2 pm EST. Twitter or FB. I also think VT needs to open the pro day to media.
The snapchat thing isn't some official report. It just has interesting little clips about the stuff going on. Idk why VT doesn't do a bigger thing about pro day but stubbornness about snapchat is unrelated
It's confusion about why they are limiting themselves to a single media platform.
It's effort vs. benefit. The vast majority of Hokie fans, even the most ardent ones, likely don't give a damn about watching the guys go through drills. The few that do will download an app and use it. The rest who care to find out what happened, but who don't care about video snippets, will read what Andy Bitter writes about it. The athletic department likely uses Snapchat primarily to target recruits, because the users skew younger. There has been a huge uptick in the "Hokies in the NFL" type posts across social media for VT, which is a good, concerted effort. Snapchat is all about telling those 16-year-old prospects, "hey watch our guys do drills for NFL SCOUTS WHO ARE HERE AT VT LIKE THEY ALWAYS ARE." That's all it is. It's not likely worth their time to cross-post stuff to all their platforms when there's likely minimal return on that time investment.
I agree - those over 40 guys that are inherently suspicious of apps, but may watch drills if posted on "trusted media" like TKP, like me, will read AB and comments, but have no desire to learn to use an app that will be out faster than myspace. The hottest apps are geared to the youngest audience. Those that want it will find it even if they need to google (or bing) the Roanoke Times, or download the newest app. Better to post what fits the audience using the media than posting grad level info on teen centered media, or vice versa.
For what it's worth, I'm with you on the Snapchat thing, and I'm only 20. I think it's pretty stupid; I had one for a month and deleted the app off my phone within that span of a month. However, I clearly do not have as much passion for the Pro Day as you do, but I can see your point.
I'm glad snapchat has extended its relavence past "hs kids sending inappropriate pictures of themselves to each other". HS kids don't seem to understand that digital is forever....
"HS kids don't seem to understand that digital is forever...."
And apparently neither do Kate Upton or Jennifer Lawrence...
They're making millions off it.
If its any incentive, there some tug of war type drills up right now that are pretty damn entertaining. Isaiah vs Bradshaw was good. Also JC completely works the guy he goes against. Don't use your age to think your too good for something
I won't, thanks.
Don't think it's all about age, please.
Great job correcting my grammar. If you've read any of the comments in this thread, it revolves around "I'm over 30. I refuse snapchat." with no other explanation. They're making it about age
I actually thought I deleted and not posted as when I proofread it, I came off as a jerk and it didn't convey what I was trying to say, at all.
Sorry, I posted it by mistook. Hit the wrong button I guess and sent it to the Interwebs instead of the recycle bin.
? )
Leg for dealing with my jerkiness.
No worries man. I'm just surprised that a group of people that clearly care a lot about VT football wouldn't want to see tons of drills and daily team stuff because its on a medium they're unfamiliar with
Really "no other explanation" did you read any of the comments? I'll explain again in case you can't find them. I don't like snapchat or several of the other apps out there, I also don't feel like as a consumer I should have to go searching for the content. I follow TKP, Twittter and FB. If VT football can't be bothered to cut and paste to other sites that takes minutes to do why should just accept that? Again I'll ask, if the whole sports information for Tech was in the newspaper what would the reaction be then?
Once again you are showing your complete ignorance to the purpose of the different mediums. Snapchat offers things that other mediums cannot
And if it was only on newspaper I would be upset, but only because newspaper is an old and outdated form of information
The purpose of snapchat being used by athletic depts is to reach young people using it. Posting videos on Twitter or Facebook or any other site is still very easy. Hell my wife's 92 year old grandmother does it.
The same could have been said about twitter and facebook a few years ago. Twitter and Facebook do not have the capabilities that snapchat has. You don't understand the app so I don't know how you can compare it to facebook or twitter
Sure, when you're 33, but what about now?
Right now I am 33 so I still refuse...
Dunno if that comment was incredibly cheesy or incredibly smooth.
I'm still trying to figure that out as well...
What?
Sometimes I like to pace while I think it out.
Trying to be smooth, but probably should have left it alone.
It's interesting that they don't open Pro Day to the media. They didn't last year either, when they had a bunch of guys with 1st-4th round talent. Wonder why.
Best of luck to all our former players showing off their skills today, get after them!
cant be any worse than buzz and zohn burden retweeting everything and it showing up on facebook as well. snapchat isnt so bad. even for a 30+ year old guy although ive had it for a while now but im getting to a point where i no longer use it unless i am out of town i "snap" alot of pictures and add them to my timeline with out editing or looking at them to much unlike facebook and IG where i pick out specific photos for upload.
Thanks for posting this.
A bunch of us from work downloaded snapchat. It lasted about a week, we would take random photos of each other and draw dicks on or around them and send it to everyone. It ended when the Brigade Commander was "captured" and saw the results. Good times!
That Chain of Command 'll get after ya
