Hokies' Wrestlers Ready to be "Selfish" in NCAA Tournament, Rebound from Lackluster ACC Finish

The Hokies are hoping to earn a third straight top 10 national finish.

In sports, it's rare to hear any player preach the virtues of selfishness.

Yet the common platitudes about the lack of an "I" in "team" don't hold quite as true in individual sports like wrestling.

"We have to be as selfish as we possibly can," said Hokies' sophomore heavyweight Ty Walz.

That's not just coming from one player; that's the message Tech's wrestling squad is hearing from its coach after a disappointing showing at the ACC tournament earlier this month.

"You have to be selfish out there, it's a one man show, a one man team," said head coach Kevin Dresser. "If you live and die for everyone else, it sucks the energy out of you."

After winning the ACC's regular season dual meet title, and the league's last two postseason crowns, the team had higher hopes than a third place finish in this year's conference tournament.

Walz seems to think some of that disappointment stems from the team caring too much about each other, an interesting reversal from the mentality of other team sports.

"We got caught up in how the team was doing, we let ourselves affect each other," Walz said. "Seeing the other guys lose definitely affected me."

While the team was still able to achieve some individual success, the Hokies now find themselves heading to St. Louis for the NCAA tournament in a very different situation than last year.

"We were complacent, unexcited, uninspired," Dresser said. "When that happens in six weights out of 10, you've got to blame the coach. Hopefully it's a wake up call for us."

Three Hokies were able to claim individual titles at the meet, but that was small consolation for the team's overall performance.

"It was bittersweet because even though I had individual success, everyone else was gloomy," said redshirt senior Devin Carter. "I've spent lots of time invested in this team, so watching them underperform hurt. It definitely rained on my parade a bit."

The team's broader issues obscure yet another historic outing by Carter, who managed to claim the title at 141 pounds. That win was his fourth ACC crown, making him just the ninth wrestler to ever achieve that feat in league history and the third to collect those titles in multiple weight classes.

"It's definitely still nice to go on the record books like that," Carter said.

Redshirt junior Nick Brascetta collected his third ACC title as well, this time at 157 pounds, while Joey Dance grabbed his first conference championship at 125 pounds to cap off an impressive sophomore campaign.

"I'm pretty happy with it, especially finishing with just two losses all year," Dance said. "It's been a fun run."

Those results do bring Dresser some measure of satisfaction, and he hopes to use their strong performances as a lesson to others.

"They had great tourneys, and I was quick to point that out to the rest of the team," Dresser said. "I want others to see how you should wrestle as a favorite."

But beyond that trio's success, the team found few moral victories. Both Sal Mastriani and Ty Walz fell in their first matches of the tournament, despite each one being seeded second in their respective weight classes.

"I wasn't myself, I was tight," Walz said. "I wrestled to win by two, and that's not my game. I know you need to wrestle to win by eight or 10, win by a much larger margin."

After a series of other disappointing showings at the tournament, the team heads into the NCAAs with chips firmly affixed to their shoulders.

"The coaches are preaching it, having a chip on your shoulder," Carter said. "We proved we were the top dog in the regular season and went in with a target on our backs, but we got complacent. Now it's a wake up call."

The NCAA's seeding committee added further fuel to the team's competitive fire as it set the tournament's brackets.

While eight Hokies were able to qualify for the tourney, their seeds were often lower than they might've anticipated. Carter in particular has some cause to take issue with his seeding, checking in at number four, even though he hasn't lost since December.

That puts him on the same side of the bracket as OSU's dominant Logan Stieber, a wrestler that's won the last three national titles at the weight class and bested Carter last year in the finals of the Las Vegas Invitational and in the NCAA championship bout.

But, like any coach ahead of a big tournament, Dresser emphasizes that the team can't stress over factors it can't control.

"The tournament is crazy, there's always controversy over the seeing, you just have to be ready for anything," Dresser said. "It's about you react when something unexpected happens, and we can only control how ready we are for that."

While Carter's lower seed might fall in the category of the "unexpected," Dresser doesn't see it as an obstacle that can stop his 141-pound star from earning an elusive national title.

"It's his last hurrah, and I think he gets it," Dresser said.

Carter should have no trouble preparing for his first matchup, Kent State's Tyler Small, considering this will be his third match against him. Carter recalls earning a major decision against him as a freshman, then pinning him last year before his early injury.

"It's hard to beat any guy three times, but I feel like with my style I can control the match," Carter said. "It gives me a mental advantage, I think."

Walz and Dance also share the good fortune of starting off with wrestlers they've seen before. Dance gets the benefit of an immediate rematch with Pittsburgh's Dom Forys, who he just bested by fall in the ACC tourney.

"For some reason before they did the brackets, I had a feeling I'd see him again," Dance said. "He's a freshman, but he's tough, it should be a good match."

Walz last met the Buckeyes' Nick Tavanello back in November, earning a 6-4 win to seal Tech's match win against OSU, but he says the two have plenty of history given their similar Ohio roots.

"I've seen him maybe 15 times over my wrestling career," Walz said. "We wrestled in the state finals my senior year, and then I wrestled him last year. We were actually joking about it once the brackets came out. So I definitely know what to expect."

Walz's first win over Tavanello and the team's victory over the Buckeyes might seem like a distant memory at this point, but the squad is hoping to recapture some of the fire they found in the early part of the season to improve upon last year's eighth place NCAA finish.

"We need to get back to the team we were when we beat Ohio State and pushed Penn State to the last minute," Walz said.

Part of that will likely come from Dresser's emphasis that no one is expecting much from Tech this time around.

"We're not in the conversation to be a top five, top 10 teams right now, and we need to embrace that underdog role," Dresser said. "When we do that, normally we do well, and we certainly hope that happens again."

If Dresser's squad can manage a third straight top 10 national finish, or even crown an individual champ for the first time in school history, then suddenly the memories of that sour ACC finish will fade away.

"No one remembers all that if you're an All-American, or if you take top 10," Dance said. "We're trying to win a trophy, which we've never had, and that would be a huge step for us."

Great stuff as always, Alex. Will you be following the NCAA tournament on here?

Joey definitely had a much better day than that kid.

I've never wondered what getting your leg pulled out of your socket looks like, but now i know...

"The Big Ten is always using excuses to cancel games with us. First Wisconsin. Then Wisconsin. After that, Wisconsin. The subsequent cancellation with Wisconsin comes to mind too. Now Penn State. What's next? Wisconsin?" -HorseOnATreadmill

The good news is that can be easily avoided by simply rolling to one's back.

Out of curiosity - is there any feasible shot for the Wrasslin' Hokies to win the National Championship?

Love the site's wrestling coverage this year, btw. Glad to see some other sports getting attention!

@historyhokie.bsky.social

This year, probably not. The only way to really put yourself in the position to win a NC is to qualify all 10 guys, pick up a bunch of bonus points and have multiple finalists. And then it comes down to lower-seeded guys winning a match or two and maybe picking up a bonus point along the way. If guys like Norstrem and Haught have good tournaments and Ty and Dance wrestle at least to their seeds, things could be shaping up for next year to be a big one for VT wrestling.

Thanks for the insight. Go Hokies!

If anyone wants to follow the action ESPN3 is streaming all the matches and trackwrestling.com has live results.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Joey Dance is up next on Mat 3. It looks like Kevin Norstrem is up immediately after him on the same mat.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Right you are. Dance up 8-3 near the end of the 2nd. Been hitting duck-unders like it's his job.
AND THE FALL! Joey Dance pins Forys from Pitt to advance to round 2.

I was in the lab, so I didn't get to see it live, but Devin Carter just put on a clinic, scoring a tech fall over Kent State's Tyler Small 23-7, with the final takedown coming with 2 seconds left in the match.

Sounds like a great start

norstrem lost 8-0 first round. dance and carter with wins.

Sal Mastriani was down 9-2 to start the 3rd period, but came back like a BOSS and won 13-11 in overtime. Brascetta in a good one with #9 Lavallee from Missouri on Mat 6.

I went to lunch but I had written off Mastriani after the 2nd. How on earth did he come back??

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

As did I. He ended up on the wrong end of a scramble and got turned a couple times. The past couple months, he just hasn't looked like himself. Haven't seen the same aggressiveness, decisiveness or energy out of him. However, that 3rd round something just clicked and he dominated. Got a couple takedowns and ended up turning the guy for 3 before getting the tying takedown with about 3 seconds left. Powered through OT for one last takedown for the win. Looked just like the Sal we know and love. If he wrestles the rest of the tournament like he wrestled that 3rd round, he's gonna be an All-American.

Sal had something wrong in his elbow and had to shut down for a week or two, that is why he hasn't looked like himself. That comeback too some guts though and one of the best come from behinds I've seen from this team. Top 8 is AA, and if he keeps it up, there is no doubt he is a top 8 wrestler.

Yeah, I had heard there was something up with him injury-wise. That 3rd period was absolutely insane.

And Brascetta looks great, downing #9 Lavallee 5-2. Suck it, seeding committee.

Unfortunately his draw is still very tough moving forward since he would potentially face the #1 seed in the quarterfinals.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

True. Here's hoping he can continue to wrestle well and advance pretty deep in the tournament.

Epperly has a solid match and wins 8-3.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Hard fought loss for Haught, going down 4-2 in OT1.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

That one was definitely a bummer. He wrestled well, just couldn't finish on a couple good shots. Walz had a good one against a very familiar opponent, beating OSU's Tavenello 5-3. Scored 3 takedowns and was never really in trouble.

I am missing all the good shit! Carter really got screwed. You never know!

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

He'd almost certainly have to beat Stieber for the championship anyway. Obviously it's less ideal to see him in the semis instead of the finals for placing purposes but at the end of the day you're probably going through Port and Stieber to get the title one way or another. Also the 5th seed in his bracket was upset this morning so his path to the semis doesn't look too daunting now.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Right about that! He has to beat them both sooner or later. Just matters in the team points. Gotta go over to the trey. Stieber is just a mule. I hope that Carter has found something for him. Port is not a Nancy either.

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Dance advances 8-4. The #2 seed on his side of the bracket, Garrett from Cornell (who Dance lost to earlier this year), was upset so that's great news for Dance.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Carter gets a tough match but survives 8-6 thanks 2 stall warnings.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Mastriani gives up a late takedown in the 1st. 4-4 going to the 2nd.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Sal's taking the guy down at will but is struggling to get much riding time. 10-6 going to the 3rd.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Avoids him the whole 3rd period and wins 10-6. Great job coming off a rough showing in his first match.

Brascetta up 1-0 going into the 3rd.

Brascetta gets a takedown. 3-1 with 1 minute left.

Brascetta holds on for a 3-2 win! Our wrestlers are really bringing it so far today.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Dance did not impress against AFAMartinez
Carter looked lack luster in winning 8-6 Cruz of Lehigh Cruz won ride time. Carter was limping at one point
VT tied for 7th with 10 points
Mastriani over Theobold (Rut_ 11-6) Sal looked aggressive
VT other that Sal is not aggressive.
Yes Garret was knocked off by Moisey (WVU) Garrett is the national darling @ 125

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Dance wasn't the type of wrestler to get bonus points for most of the year so I'm not shocked he didn't blow away his opponent. 8-4 is plenty of breathing room.

Carter did not have a good match. It looked like he screamed out in pain at one point prior to limping between periods. Hope he's healthy for tomorrow.

Sal looked like he finally woke up but his next match is against the 2 seed so that'll be tough.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Survive and advance. The team score will sort itself out, so right now all that matters is guys surviving and advancing. Day 2 is a monster, mentally probably more so than physically. Whoever can get things rolling and get into their game wins.

No majors and no pins in these early rounds!

Now tied for 3rd in team standing..OSU crushing it at almost 20 points. They will get theirs in Sept!

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Dance had a pin in the 1st round and Carter had a TF. Hard to complain too much about not getting bonus points after the 1st round.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Missed that and good. I don't think either looked that sharp in the second round. Tough to watch on the trey/.

Loving this coverage though it is hectic. Not like a FB game on TV!

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Sulzer UVA (4) just screwed up big time and was pinned by Moore UNI (13)....gosh!

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Can't say I'm upset about it.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Epperly gets an early takedown for a 2-0 lead.

2-1 going to the 2nd period.

4-3 going to the 3rd.

Hangs on to win 5-3.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

We have 5 going to the Quarterfinals with Walz left to go.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Epperly beats Moore (UNI) 5-3

Now tied for 8th @ 13 points
Now 6th @ 14 points
I hate Pitt more than uva.

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Walz in OT loses to Cabble (NIU) in OT 3-1. Great match and quite the shame the take down was weak.

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Hokie BAGUBA domination.

Five Hokies in the quarterfinals of the NCAA is a program record. We've got 2 guys that should be favored and 3 that'll be underdogs, according to Dresser. No dobut, Day 2 of the NCAA tournament is one of the toughest days in all of sports. Good luck to all 8 guys as they try to just survive and advance.

It's about that time, guys. Quarters start at 11am Eastern.

awesome thanks!

No problemo. Also, the order there should correspond to the order of the matches, so if you're flipping between mats, you'll likely end up going 5, 7, 4, 5, 3.

Terrible, terrible start to the day. Dance, Carter and Norstrem have lost.

Disappointment continues as Sal falls to the defending national champ 2-0

Looks like we're going 0-5 in the championship round. You can guarantee Dresser is going to be very unhappy.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

The nightmare continues as Epperly drops a 2-1 decision to Brown. Hokies go 0-5 in the quarters.

yup 0-5 in the quarters and norstem lost his consolation match.

haught loses in consolations 9-8 and waltz advances in consolations think it was 10-4.

Who did Carter fall to?

Jack from NC State.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Well, f-k.

seriously bad day so far. good luck to everyone in the consolations

I think this accurately reflects today within this thread....

...Dammit...

One of these years they'll put it all together all the way through at the end. Thought it might have been this year, but it'll happen eventually. Still proud of the squad, though.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

The good news is that all but Carter will be back next year, and even Devin will still be around in a coaching capacity. If the new guys coming in are as legit as we think they are, we could see some serious national title runs over the next couple years.

And as we saw last year, Gus is no slouch either, so between him and probably Chishko, I think 141 will still be solid. Norstrem needs someone to challenge him, so maybe Gus slides back down, but who knows what Dresser will do at this point.

To me, the 165 and 184 are the obvious areas where we can make the most improvement to help towards a title. Strube was serviceable this season since there really wasn't much behind Moon, but it will be interesting to see if they can find someone else or if Strube will be a starter next year. At 184, I think there is a good chance of Gabel getting beat out by Zavatsky. Zavatsky had a solid redshirt year and Gabel is just too injury prone at this point.

Don't be surprised if Norstrem goes down to 125. However if that happens unless Olsen grows I have no earthly idea who will take over at 133. The reason I say he may move down is because Joey has yet to redshirt and with it being an Olympic year he may choose to focus solely on freestyle. If Norstrem does not go down to 125 Olsen is a decent backup and can be serviceable for a season. Chishko isn't dropping to 141 again that weight suck will hurt his production. What I wouldn't be surprised to see is Brascetta hitting the weights again and moving up to 165, there is a void there with Misuna transferring and Spengler just not being college ready, with Mastriani or Chishko moving to 157.

Just noticed that Epperly gets Butler tonight. Zach's going to have to get over the hump to get to AA.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Just got home and watched Dance get beat blowing a lead and ride time. This day has been like the FB team in a big bowl game.

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

In what may have been the worst single moment on the history of Hokie Sports, I watched Joey Dance get taken down to be eliminated from the NCAA tournament the very second Clemson hit a grand slam at the top of the 10th to blow open a 0-0 game. Happily, Carter stopped the bleeding with a convincing major decision to clinch All-American honors, becoming the first in program history to be a 3 time A-A. Congrats, Devin.

After losing to Butler 3 times this year, Epp makes today all better.

That is AWESOME Zach!

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Ty Walz is an All-American as well, taking out the 10 seed 2-1. Tech's 4 All-Americans ties a program record, and all four guys will wrestle again tonight to figure out placings. Devin Carter is currently up 6-3 over #3 Mayes of Missouri late in the 2nd.

And Carter wins! He'll wrestle again tomorrow after downing the 3rd-seeded Mayes 10-8 in a very exciting match.

Brascetta dominates 12th-seeded Minotti to likely progress straight into the 3rd place match, with Ness being injured. Dude's having a heck of a tournament, having only lost to Buzzsaw #1 Martinez.

Ohio State has 2 guys that have contributed more than 20 points each. Currently tech has 41 points.

That's what happens when you make it to the finals with bonus points.

Epperly and Walz both drop heartbreakers to finish the night. Everyone will be back in action tomorrow to finalize placings.

Up and down session tonight, which is still a huge improvement over the all down session earlier today.

No other way to slice it other than saying Dance had a very tough tournament. He lost both of his matches in SV today. He would have avoided the 2 seed Garrett (Cornell), who he lost to earlier this season, and faced an unseeded Moisey (WVU), who has had a hell of tournament so far but he also had 13 losses on the year. On the other side of the bracket, 4 seed Nathan Tomasella of Ohio State took out the 1 seed to reach the finals. Dance beat Tomasella 7-6 in the dual earlier this year. Winning an individual championship is never easy but the bracket certainly seemed to set up well for Dance's chances this year.

Carter recovered really well this evening. It's a shame he didn't get another shot at 1 seed Stieber (Ohio St) but that was going to be an extremely tough match. He gets 11 seed Mecate (ODU) tomorrow, who he downed 6-4 in the Virginia Duals this season. If he wins there, I'd like to see him get some revenge on Jack (NC St) for a chance at 3rd place.

Mastriani caught a bit of a hard break with the bracket as he wrestled the 2 seed Tsirtis (NW) down to the wire before losing and then saw the 4 seed Sorenson (Iowa) in the consolations.

Brascetta has been on fire this tournament. By virtue of being unseeded he had a tough path but took out the 8 and 9 seeds before losing to the undefeated 1 seed Martinez (Illinois). He bounced back with a great win over 5 seed Pack (SDSU) and a MD over 12 seed Minotti (Lehigh). His next opponent, 3 seed Ness (Minnesota), took an injury default in the semis so he will likely advance to the 3rd place match. Have to be impressed with Brascetta rising to the occasion this week.

Epperly had a chance to take out the 2 seed Brown (Penn St) and couldn't quite pull it off. That one stings a little more because the 8 seed Wilps (Pitt) upset the 1 seed to make the finals on the other side of the bracket and Epperly beat him 3-2 this season. On the positive side, the 4th time was the charm as Epperly finally got the best of 5 seed Butler (UVA) and pinned his ass. Unfortunately Epperly dropped a tight match to 6 seed Storey (Minn) and will now rematch Julson (NDSU), who he defeated 5-3 in the second round, in the 7th place match. As sweet as it was for Epperly to pin Butler with All-American on the line, he'd have a good shot at a championship if he could have pulled out the Brown match.

Walz has wrestled close matches all year and managed to be on the winning side more often than not. It would have been a far easier path if he had won over 7 seed Cabell (Northern Iowa) in SV this morning, but he showed a lot of heart to fight his way back through the consolations and win 3 matches, including one over 4 seed Marsden (OK St) to reach All-American. He dropped the next match to 8 seed Lawson (Penn St) in SV, but it's hard not to imagine he may have been running on fumes coming off a huge upset and having wrestled 6 matches in two days. He gets a chance at 7th place against 9 seed Kroells (Minn).

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Thanks for the write up Shak. Wish I knew what the deal was Friday morning. Did they all go out and get drunk Thursday night? Probably everyone had 10 lbs of St Louis ribs! Looking good for next year.

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

The second day of the NCAA wrestling tournament may be the single toughest thing in sports. Making weight, getting through two matches, making weight again and then being able to wrestle the next day is incredibly difficult. Then there's the simple fact that everyone in the NCAA wrestling tournament who has made it to the quarters is good. Guys like Dance and Carter should have taken care of business and both looked like they were in a position to win late. Carter lost in large part because of a lazy cut that resulted in him getting reversed. It was little things like that across the board that led to a disappointing Friday, but the guys bounced back well on Saturday. I think this year was a really good learning experience for both the coaches and the wrestlers, and we should be seeing some really big things out of the team next year.
