Lost in the shuffle of March Madness this afternoon was this tweet by Mr. Redman:

Depth was, and remains to be, a concern this offseason and it looks like the coaching staff is taking steps to get some more bodies on the OL.
Per his current page on HokieSports, he is 6'4" and 271lbs. Throw on another 20 lbs and you've got an athletic tackle. Obviously that's not always a simple task, but you get the idea.

Gotta respect a guy willing to make a move going into his final season.
Worked out well for Duane Brown. Let's hope for 2.0.
Agreed, but Brown was more the exception than the rule.
It happened for Duane early in his career, so he was developed as an LT for several years. I'm not sure what kind of chance Redman has to develop into a solid OL.
True. But for the most part, Redman has been essentially a "wide tackle" more than a TE. I'm not saying there isn't a learning curve. But it's not as though he probably hasn't been spending most of his time training to block DEs & outside LBs.
I would think the biggest adjustment would be pass blocking (and that's not minor). I'm gonna guess that he hasn't spent nearly as much time on that as, say, short yardage/goal line blocking.
It may have something to do with our current depth at TE. Getting on the field ahead of Bucky, Malleck, & Cline would be difficult.
Must....Resist....TE....to...OL....Joke
@Hokie Fireman...I made that Meme. Glad to you see you using it!
Google, that's the only way I know how to get them.
6'4" is a big TE. My guess is he would have been in mostly as a blocking TE anyway with all of the receiver type TEs on the roster. My guess is that if he thinks he will only be blocking anyway he might see a better opportunity to get on the field at OL.
I would like my TEs to be at least 6'4". 271 is a bit heavy for me, though.
agreed - 6'4" is kind of an expected/prototypical height at TE. 6'4" 250 - 260 is ideal TE size.
Redman is a bit heavy, probably trying to enhance his abilities as a blocker since that has been his role in the TE group - or maybe that's just his natural size. Either way he's never been much of a recieving threat.
Moving to the OL gives him a chance to move up to a 2nd or at least 3rd string OT from being the 4th/5th string TE.
Tackle eligible play out of a 6 OL set???
Oopty oop? You can't run a simple slant pattern, let alone oopty oop!
Oopty Freakin Ooop...pfft...
Good, the more bodies on the O-Line, the better. #calcknowledge
Haha! Calc Knowledge!
Redman was in an agility drill with Conte and the Glock.
I like this -- ANOTHER!
I guess everyone around here is anti snapchat, but they've been posting dozens of these
I love snapchat what's their handle?
vtfootball
Guess he didnt want to switch to QB.....
I am glad he is striving to find a way to contribute to the team. He knew that he had been passed on the TE depth chart and was only going to see the field in the mythical 4 TE set.
Quarterbacks become Tight Ends
Tight Ends become Tackles
Tackles become Guards...
I blame the #1 dining services
JC's comment was pretty funny tho. And also true
I may be a lone duck on this one, but not really seeing this as a positive (or negative?)
This is the same Redman that got tore up trying to block the DE from William and Mary in goaline. (believe this was pointed out in a TKP article during the year?)
The same Redman that had his status changed to Senior before the bowl and now he is back? (he has already graduated, so we have given him his education)
In my mind it would be better for him to leave the program, and use his scholarship on a JUCO lineman for depth purposes.
I will not judge a player by 1 play or 1 game. Making a move to benefit the team is always a positive even if the impact is only on the practice field.
As for the leaving the program, if he feels he can contribute to the team, then he should be here. The coaches offered him and they honor those commitments and he has honored his end of the deal and has worked hard, stayed out of trouble and is an experienced asset to the team.
The "we have given him his education" line is off the mark. He traded busting his tail for 4 years for that education. He may be wrapping up a master's degree this year for all we know. I do not agree with your post at all.
Somebody's a Grumpy Gus
They keep talking about looking for center and guard depth. If nothing else they can move Hansen back to D.
Hansen won't see the field on DL.
And moving a guy with starts under his belt at RT to defense helps center and guard depth... how?
Wha?
I'm glad we've made it to converting TEs for depth rather than to find starters.
Maybe having a possibility at playing has put some new fire under him. Looking up at the three in front of him had to be difficult.
I read the thread title fast and thought........ 'My, Hootie must have grown!'
