2015 Wrestling Season is Done

Good year guys, 10th is a great ranking. Carter getting 3rd, and being able to go out with a win is great.

We also finished higher than loluva for the year

We also finished higher than loluva for the year

And that's the important, key thing here.

If that's our only goal in football, we'll never win the ACC again.

Sorry everybody, wasn't trying to belittle the wrestling teams achievements, just UVA's football program.
Congrats to the wrestling team on their achievements this year!

Uva has a good wrestling program, its only been recently that we've had their number. Well since Dresser came in board. He will have an NCAA champion at VT. Everywhere he goes they win

I'd say Epperly and Dance will not leave VT without being an NCAA champ

Both had a good path to the title this year so the final results, especially for Dance, were a little disappointing. Also wrestling is interesting in that a young guy can step in and dominate a weight class immediately. I think Epperly has the best shot at winning a title but our guys have seemed to struggled to bring their best in major tournaments (ACCs and NCAAs). This has improved over the years under Dresser but we've had a few wrestlers who seemed to be in position to win a title and haven't managed to do so, so until it happens I am weary of having championship expectations for any individual wrestler.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

You're right about being in position and not capitalizing. Dance had it wide open after a couple upsets at 125. He could've been in the finals easily, but instead didn't place. Epperly had beaten both guys in the finals at his weight. He has had a brutal schedule all season long. The ACC was stacked at 174. They're both young and talented and I'm sure Coach Dresser and themselves expect national titles before they leave. The team should look pretty good next year as they only lose one wrestler who competed at nationals. While Carter is leaving some huge shoes to fill, Gustafson is no slouch. He was ACC champ last year and took a RS this year.

I wrote lots. Deleted lots.

I have no doubt Coach Dresser is the man for the job.

Next year should still be a good (Maybe even great) year for the Hokie wrestlers.
125-Dance, no doubt about this right now. When Dance is on and wrestles for 7 minutes he can beat anyone. he just needs to finish his matches.
133-Norstrem, While not a spectacular wrestler is still a pretty good wrestler he needs to shoot more.
141-Gustafson, Stepping into Carter's shoes will defintely be tough, Gustafson is a very good wrestler and spent all year going from 133 to 141.
149- Mastriani, Probably will decide how well the Hokie season goes next year. Mastriani has a good offense as long as he finishes his shots. If not he gets scored on easily. It all depends on which Mastriani shows up. Also watch for Solomon Chishko, he redshirted this year and is one of the prized recruits from the 2014 cycle out of PA.
157- Brascetta, An all around solid wrestler will be the "Devin Carter" for the team next year.
165- The weight to watch, Strube has a funky style of wrestling but he will be the incumbent. However one of Tech's best recruits David McFadden (number 14 recruit in the country) will be coming in and while a redshirt would be good, Dresser may see next year as a good year to make a national title run.
174- Epperly, Great redshirt freshman year for him that went through the "highs and lows of being a freshman." He will be exciting to watch the next few years.
184-Gabel/Zavatsky, Gabel is the incumbent at this weight here and is a solid wrestler and will be a senior next year. However Zavatsky is one of the great 2014 recruits from PA.
197-Haught, Solid wrestler but has some deficiencies. He was also a freshman this year. As of right now he is by far the best wrestler at 197 that Tech currently has.
HWT-Walz, Very good wrestler is one of the HWT that likes to shoot so he always has a chance. He ran into a bunch of good wrestlers this year, but he has continued to get better.

National weights that will have lots of turnover:
141, With Stieber gone and a bunch of other top ranked wrestlers graduating this will be a fun weight to watch.
149, Another weight with a lot of top guys graduating.
157, Will someone be able to beat freshman phenom Isiah Martinez? Should have a good run for Brascetta next year to get to the finals at NCAAs
174- Top 5 ranked wrestlers all graduate so Epperly will be highly ranked next year, he will still have Butler to deal with.
HWT- Gwiz will be back next year so Walz will have to face him and hopefully beat him.

Also with all these predictions it is also possible that some other highly ranked wrestlers may take an Olympic redshirt, so this could all change by the time the season starts next year.

I don't see Dance being able to make it down to 125 again next year. I hope I'm wrong though.

Edit: didn't realize that the top 5 in 174 was graduating. This makes me even more excited for Epperly next year

Yup 174 loses Wilps, Brown Storley, Evans, and Kokesh. This is according to flowrestling. I don't think Dance is suited well to wrestle at 133. He is on the shorter side as a wrestler (see match against Megaludis of Penn State last year) and I don't think bumping up a weight will do him any good both individually and team wise.

If I were to pick the starting lineup for next year I would pick
125-Dance
133-Norstrem
141-Gustafson
149-Mastriani
157-Brascetta
165-McFadden (this kid is the real deal)
174-Epperley
184-Gabel (although I'm excited to see what Zavatsky will bring the following year)
197-Haught
HWT-Walz

Looks like a pretty sweet line-up

Purely speculative, but with as many injuries as Gabel has suffered through, he may call it quits. I'd like to see what Zavatsky can do this upcoming year and with that lineup I think they'd be pretty set.

Thanks for the review!

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

I hope Carter gets a chance to make the Olympic team.

That would be fantastic. Bimbo Coles, Queen Harrison, and Devin Carter? Need moar.

I'll take David Wilson in the Triple Jump for $1,000, Trebek

Long live Rasche Hall
