After an hour of half-assed google searching while watching the Penguins game, I gave up and decided to ask. When is this practice facility going to break ground? I skimmed through the Stadium Woods and master plan reports and found nothing. Anyone have a link or a solid source on this whole process? Any rumors on expansion(s) to Lane and other facilities is appreciated too, no matter how ridiculous

Here are those reports that I found not interesting enough to fully read.

I heard possibly a new Video board or something or is that just Hokie lore?
Nope, that's valid. Weaver said on Tech Talk Live back in December he hoped to have a new scoreboard in Lane for this season.
New as in a second board or new as in replacing the current board with a nicer one?
It sounded to me like they are replacing the board, he said something like they are aware that the current one is showing its age
Yep, they're replacing it. They're in talks to replace the ones in Cassell Coliseum as well.
Already done
It was a package deal, just a matter of price and getting the money from IMG. Both Lane and Cassell will be done this summer, with Lane going in first. From what I have heard/seen, the one in Cassell will be bigger and higher up, with the catwalks being removed and it basically fitting between the big air vents on the wall.
What about them cubes?
Can we get one of those scoreboard cubes that hangs over the court? Or is Cassell too rickety to support one?
pretty sure the weight of a center hanging scoreboard can't be supported with the current beams. has to be at the ends with the sound system in the middle
Correct
The center of Cassell can hold the speaker system that is currently there and that is about it. It would have to take some super lightweight material to be able to have one in the middle.
Dear Weaver
we NEED a second one
The fans in the north endzone shouldn't have to turn their backs to the field to see down/distance/time/timeouts/score/replays. Weaver: GET US TWO SCOREBOARDS!
Thanks for agreeing, but I just want to quickly point out that you can see down/distance/time/timeouts/score by looking at the ticker style scoreboard above the media rooms (I believe they'e media rooms) in the south. However, for replays/challenges/all the other random fun on Hokievision, we NEED a second jumbotron.
The fact of the matter is that we don't have a place for a second jumbotron. The North Endzone has expansion plans in place once we have the money and have more of our debt from our last expansion paid off. My thought is that the only way to make it work for 2 jumbotrons is to put it between the South Endzone and East Stands and the North Endzone and West Stands. I don't see that happening though. Then again, we have the top architecture school so someone in there better get to working out a design that will work for us pronto
I think the best way to get two in there is put them on top
Like Bank of America does. However, they would most likely need to be substantially bigger and there are a million other things I'd rather spend that money on.

My concern would be the height of the stands and the wind at that height. While I like that design, I feel like the wind that whips through the NRV might have an adverse effect on it if it is that high up. I could be wrong, but that was my reasoning for going against that design as an idea.
Enlist the aerospace engineering department to make it aerodynamic.
That could work, right?
Or maybe something else.
You can't just 'make it aerodynamic.' It's still got to be a big flat TV screen. Not like you can shape it into an airfoil or something. I think you'd just have to reinforce the crap out of it if you wanted to go that way, but you'd probably be better off finding another place for it.
Call in the Civil Engineers!
Yea unless you want it to fly, AOE is not the answer
What are the CivE's gonna do?
Design it for proper rainwater runoff in a hurricane or something?
Or reinforce the shit out of it like hokieshibe said.
Nothing important
I just wanna see how small we can make the text boxes
Me too

Oh God
it's so narrow
That's what she said?
haha
I was waiting for someone to say it (not for long though). +1 to you.
Seriously
Does it get down to single characters per row?

It's hilarious that people are continuing this. I'm sorry but I had to add.
Sorry Joe!

Very narrow. Like UVAs
Well poop. I quit now
Guess I should have added a </sarcasm> tag to the end of that post...
Who says it has to be a flat screen? We can go old school and have a massive tube TV for the scoreboard, and it will be much more aerodynamic!
LOL
Then it could be called Lo-def Lane.
The things men will do during the off-season of football..
Isn't most of that information available on the electronic banner between the upper/lower deck in the south EZ? Where would you put another giant scoreboard? Can we get one decent scoreboard before people piss and moan for a second one? Yeesh.
Sorry for pissing and moaning
I pointed out that you can see most of it in the south already. And we can put it on top of the south or in one of the corners. We have options. Any major football stadium has two screens. I think it would be worthwhile to the fans/students to have a second screen, that's all.
Alabama has four. If we beat Alabama we better install 5.
Didn't mean to direct my comments specifically at you, but it feels like nobody can be happy with the improvements being made. Replacing the existing scoreboard and upgrading the sound system should have been top priorities, and it took quite an effort to get the ball rolling and acquire the necessary funding. A second scoreboard just seems way out of the realm of possibility right now. As others said, there doesn't seem to be an ideal place to put it. Also, with the reports about debt from athletic departments (especially Tennessee) coming to light, I'd rather us retain some fiscal responsibility rather than unnecessarily build and add on to Lane Stadium in an attempt to keep up with the Joneses.
Funding
Most of the funding comes from IMG and Hokie Club, so give it a couple more years before anything else is done. Though I feel they would expand/improve the North Endzone before they added a second video board in the stadium.
Permanent Scoreboard
If there are plans to expand the NEZ that are going to occur in the near future why build a new scoreboard that would need to be replaced or restructured to facilitate the NEZ expansion? That is VDOT logic.
Not VDOT logic, but VDOT's lawyers' logic...
Read an article in the DP a few years back about a contract between VDOT and some construction company for the redesign of the I-64/US-258 (Mercury Blvd) interchange in Hampton.
Among other things, there was a clause that whenever a sign was moved, the construction company was paid something like $500. Every morning, each sign was "repositioned" for no reason other than that it only cost them maybe $5 each in labor.
tl;dr version: VDOT's lawyers have a problem closing loopholes in contracts, causing them to bleed money.
Happens all the time
If you saw what I saw you would really be mad about how your tax dollars are spent. I work for a company that almost exclusively does construction for VDOT.
If we are getting a new scoreboard to replace the new one, why just get rid of the old one? Move it to the East/South corner. It would get us the second scoreboard, and the only cost would be moving/stabilizing the board.
Practice Facility is awaiting Weaver recovery from surgery before final review
What I hear is the trees are sacred in the Stadium Woods. What I really know is that is a favorite spot for students to get stoned before home games, which explains some of the resistance.
I say build the damn Stadium Woods Practice facility and be done with it!
Not gonna happen...
the environmentalists got their way and they agreed to find an alternate location. Bet on it being built across from Lee (where the tennis courts are now). The problem is the "war" over the trees cost the program over a year of design/planning...and with the performance of the team last year, the donors got a little cold on the idea. Word is the facility is 3-4 years delayed and may not be built before Beamer retires.
Nope- not going on the Tennis Courts at Washington St... and there were serious issues ($$ related) with the stadium woods site not to mention the forest which is used for research, VTCC, getting stoned, etc :-).
Unless something has changed in 6 months
Last thing I heard was that they are relocating the tennis courts, and supposedly adding a roller rink or something, at which point they will put the practice facility there on Washington.
But, I suppose I wouldn't be surprised if the plans have changed again.
You'll have to trust me on this one... Its NOT going on Washington Street. I ain't telling where it IS going ;-)
Trust you eh?
Why should we trust you? If youre Jim Weaver than I have a serious bone to pick with you about the Greenberg incident. Also if you want, you can post where the facility is going and we promise we wont tell anyone else
I promise on Sean Glennons NFL career
And a turkey leg for making me giggle in the office!
Speaking of in the office...
http://stlouis.cbslocal.com/2013/02/05/study-americans-spend-up-to-80-pe...
I immediately thought of TKP community
They considered moving the tennis courts and hockey rink (it's already there, just not very big/smooth) to Oak Lane, along with the intramural fields, and I suppose still might, but they've ruled out the Washington Street location for the near future. I heard somewhere that if they built there, they would have to put part of the building underground and the costs just were too high for that to be feasible.
I like to take a leak in the woods on the way to the stadium. Sometimes I also like to hide a beer and find it on the way out.
It's like you moved Easter to the fall and swapped in better prizes for candy-filled eggs.
My memory might be wrong
But didn’t Weaver tell the environmentalists that if they wanted the facility in another location that they might need to fund raise to make up the difference. If they weren’t able the facility location would not change. Does anyone else remember somethng similar?
New jumbotron is good but...
I also want a new sound system. The fact that ALL the sound (PA etc) comes from the scoreboard is crazy. Invest a few $$ and put speakers all the way around the stadium. It has to be insanely loud to reach the southern end of Lane. We sit West Side and my left ear is ringing and numb by halftime from it...I'm fine (and happy) to be ringing from crowd noise...just not the hokie vision cheap effects.
We don't need the crowd noise piped in (ahem, BC...ahem, LOLUVA).
...BTW - that's another thing...we have good creative/computer students, let them design something better for the graphics and effects...currently they're just plain cheesy!!!
You cant hear in the east stands but i could tell what was being said on Airport road.
An indoor practice facility needs to be a stone's throw from Lane. It's way more practical that way, and can serve as a possible shelter in case inclement weather delays a game.
It can also have a parking garage to protect Corso's rental car from bolts of lightning.
As long as he picks us to win at home, it shouldn't be a problem
THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!
To my horror, I learned the hated hoos will have their indoor practice building completed next month:
"University of Virginia's Indoor Practice Facility
Charlottesville, Virginia
Completion: March 2013 | Size: 80,800 GSF / New Construction
The Indoor Practice Facility will house a full-size 100-yard artificial turf football field with two end zones and five-yard run-offs and will accommodate a 65-foot clear height in the center for kicking. Other sports or recreation activities that align with occupant load and activity restrictions will also use this facility."

I want to -1 that so bad right now, but I won't shoot the messenger
With a state of the art side line where Coach London can practice his time outs and sideline antics
The same Practice Facility
The same practice facility that caught fire mid construction, because #loluva.

This happened, you guys.
Word has it that the new UVA practice facility
doesn't have clocks in it, because London doesn't know what to do with them.
I heard they weren't going to have footballs or endzones for the same reason,
I'm pretty sure it's just filled with Thomas Jefferson coloring books, anyways.
And one of those talking spinner things from when we were kids, so Mike London knows who to put in at QB.
Just cheese and crackers.
Wash it down with a white wine spritzer??
It also includes an indoor parking lot
so team can work on kicking cars.
