I'm so happy!
This thread title is an oxymoron.
Aww, McDonald's is overrated anyway, right? You can get a better burger from a hot dog stand, for goodness sake.
So the VT take on this is "Wisconsin has more McDonald's All Americans than UVA will have fans at their spring game." Is that about right?
I came out with the exact same translation myself
Yeah but if you asked Bo Ryan behind closed doors if he'd rather coach his talent or Kentucky's, he'd take Kentucky's any day of the week.
I think any coach in the country would want to coach their roster.
Maybe not today!
I'm not so sure. Bo Ryan is old school. He would rather have players who are willing to adapt and be receptive to instruction. How many of those one-and-doners want to work on their footwork, transition defense, or setting an effective backdoor screen. I'm sure he would rather have the talent if the talent was willing to be broken down and built back up. But most of those guys think they are NBA players in waiting and might not want to hear what he has to say. Bo Ryan still has his players who are subbing in hand a towel to the guy coming out to make sure there are not more than 5 players on the court.
Being an aspiring NBA lottery pick (or McDonald's All American) and being a 'team player' are not mutually exclusive. I believe Kentucky and Duke both disproved that this year.
You can't win 38 games in a row with selfish players who don't care about the team though. I didn't see anything during the season to make me think that the Kentucky player's weren't willing to be coached.
Contrary to popular perception, most of the recent champions have NOT been composed of "one and doners". Off the top of my head since Carmelo at Syracuse in '03 (?), it's only been the '14-'15 Duke & '11'-'12 UK teams. Every other champ has a been a fairly veteran team.
It takes more to win a championship than just get a bunch of 18 year old prodigies and throw 'em out on the court.
Doesn't really defeat the point, but Sam Dekker was a unanimous 5* and Parade All-American coming out of HS.
And McDonald's All Americans on the roster: Duke (8) vs Michigan St (1)
So what exactly is the point?
You need either 8 or 0 to win. I like VTs odds.
So you're saying you feel very good about Buzz's recruiting efforts going forward?
One way or the other.
I'm still not sure why we're taking a crazy hamburger clown's opinion of college basketball players so seriously.
Which was my point above, but you said it so much better. Leg for you for bringing Ronald into it.
