Learning off the Field: Go Inside the Hokie Meeting Room

This is a fascinating video and it gives those of us removed from the game or never privy to it a reminder why so many of these kids suffer information overload as young players.

I like Coach Burden's attitude. I hope it translates to the receivers.

dang......was that English?

White boards and dry erasers, shocked this is still used so widely. Was expecting some space age computer board.

Edit: was thinking something along this line.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

when you are used to it, whiteboards are easier

I'm above the age of 25, a overhead projector seems easy to me, but kids these days seem to think digital is easier. My two year old can use my iPad and iPhone.

If you notice, the defensive backs were watching film on an overhead projector

I don't think he was saying they should or shouldn't use something or another, just surprised at what they were using.

Bird an an overhead projector can't show film, it's a device that projects a still image from a transparent piece of paper to a screen on the wall.

They make a computer interface that you can put on top of the overhead projector. Old school high tech.

I was a former member of the Video Office in the Athletic Department, these coaches are football geniuses, just listen to them speak, but technology is not necessarily their thing. I remember one time Coach Gray's computer monitor died in the middle of a meeting in the DB's room. I came in and replaced the monitor, his first question was "will my cut-ups and teach tapes still be on here?" I mean that pretty much sums up the use of white boards, right?

It's easy to bring the videos up on a tablet/laptop, but takes a lot longer to draw on them. Also, you lose some points of emphasis if you're not able to continually draw over the same route because that redshirt frosh just...isn't...getting it right and you want to make sure they understand where they're screwing up. If there's no one in the room, the coaches use the software so they can go forward and back as often as they like so they can pick up on little tendencies and nuances.

Sick. I love this type of stuff. I only recognize like 4 of the RBs tho. JCC, McMillian, Rogers, and I'm assuming Juice is the one in the back corner with the dreads next to Travon

Receivers making pancakes? I like the sound of that

First I'm so glad Marshawn still has his Predator dreads. Second Lydon is a big man, bigger than his tape shows.

hell yeah we opened up a can'o'worms on anOSU...ain't no doubt about that...Urban looked more dazed and confused than I've ever seen him LOL

Onward and upward

I will never forget Urban's quote going into the tunnel at halftime "They've been working on this"

"We treated them just like we were defending the Georgia Tech option."- Bud

Ah, but doesn't seem like Bud changes things up on how he defends GT every year? Hear that Urban? ENTER JAWS THEME

Ok I took some ridiculous classes at VT during my time there but this seems more complicated with all that to learn. Why doesn't playing on a sports team not count for some sort of credit?

-Semper Primus

Well that sport is paying for a pretty expensive education, but I see what you're saying.

I dont see why not. Going through my technical schools in the military I gained a bunch of college credits towards a degree.

I think it would depend on the players Major. But I could see it possibly giving the players elective credit or going towards a minor in coaching, athletic training, etc.

VCU has a sports leadership master's program, so I think for something like that they could totally be given credit for football, especially given the level of detail and study that goes into the current game. For a finance degree... not so much.

Yeah, I think this idea would be good. I am actually amazed it doesn't happen. Don't the MVs get some sort of credit for their participation in the band?

Deleted.

Well I just think you guys are the best if that helps.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

If you don't think Tech has great coaching think again. Burden is obviously on top of his game. I don't know about Morehead but maybe he is a recruiting guru not necessarily a teacher. Bud, obviously. Shane, knowledge, maybe work on delivery. If you beat tech it's because you outplayed the players. Seems much more intense than previous years.

FWIW, Moorehead is also a great teacher. I got the chance to spend a couple hours in his film room and to see him out on the practice field. Dude can definitely teach with the best of them. That said, Burden definitely isn't a slouch either. He isn't as vocal, but so help the kid who misses a block, runs the wrong route, or drops a ball.

Everything I heard about Moorehead was that he was an excellent teacher. Phillips and Ford both were excellent route runners as true freshmen. Very few freshmen around the country were sharper on curl and dig route cuts than those two.

Didn't realize 1 knockdown block was trading at -25 up-downs. I need to make some moves on that exchange rate.

Bud is a bad, bad man.

This warms my heart.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

This is great!
Love how the Coach Gray and Coach Foster are talking about the same thing. (obviously video shot at the same time I am assuming)
2x2 (twins)
3x1 (trips)
Coach Foster is referring to the differing routes they can be running out of a certain formation they are given (Snag, Jet, Zing = WR routes, terms used mostly in fast paced offenses that are short routes aka Auburn uses these terms)
Coach Gray referring to "level of the back and where to insert", is level as in 1st, 2nd, 3rd WR from the line of scrimmage.
12 personnel - 1 running back, two tight ends (So if it was 2x2 and the players already know that it is 12 personnel then it is automatic that one of those guys in twins is a TE)
Love hearing the carry over from meeting room to meeting room, Coach Gray telling the guys 2x2 and 3x1 and then Coach Foster telling them the DB's will let them know if it is 2x2.
