Metallica? Lol.
I think this is the year we finally get season tix. I'm excited.
Got two tickets with a good friend of mine, first year we've owned season tickets.
Considering the secondary market for the OSU game, the $350 for tickets was more than reasonable.
Yeah, we figure if we make it to the OSU game and 2 or 3 others we'll have gotten our money's worth. The others I'll either try to sell or donate at work. They're always raffling off something for March of Dimes, Blue Ridge Food Bank, Relay For Life, etc.
Yeah, and frankly the rest of the home schedule isn't phenomenal so selling/donating may be the best way to go.
As a long time season ticket holder, I want to wear what I want to wear. I could care less what it looks like on tv that's why I bought a ticket to be AT THE GAME. I dress in maroon. I prefer it. Call me a stick in the mud or whatever, but I don't see any added value to the "effect" games. It's a scam to sell new shirts every year. Spen less time worrying about what the crowd looks like on tv. If you're winning games, you look good the end.
Yeah, Mrs. BCH and I wore maroon to the game above, wear whatever you want, nbd. It can look really cool though.
Really? You must not know many people under the age of 25.
Hypothetical.
If they did a shirt giveaway like they give them at the gate or on the bleachers. Would yea wear them then?
I tailgate, in the shirt or jersey, that I wear to the game. I have five or ten bucks to buy whatever they come out with that's not the issue at all. It's the lack of individuality and being told what to wear, when. Just play football and I'll be there I was there before and I'll be there after (if it ever stops)
Is that also the shirt or Jersey you wear when you yell at kids to stay off your lawn?
There's a reason Penn State white out is legendary. The thing is about unity as a crowd
It may be a scam for students (not really the shirts are super cheap) but you could easily wear orange VT apparel that you already own.
That is what I do. I don't buy new Maroon and Orange effect shirts, I just wear one of the appropriate color.
Same here.
the added value is how well our school shows team spirit and how much we love to follow our hokies. If you don't want to do that/buy another effect shirt, fine, more power to you. The effect games is just a way to show our school spirit. And scam? Yea I don't think so, if students want to buy the shirts, they will, if they don't, then they dont.
The shirts are $6 each I believe? And that goes directly to SGA (or to Foster's LPD Fund). You're welcome to spend your money however you want (I personally haven't bought an effect shirt in a few years), but lets not spin it to sound like this is some big corporation taking advantage of us.
Exactly. Calling it a scam to sell shirts is so far from the truth considering the effect shirts are probably the cheapest official VT apparel you can buy (and as others have pointed out support a good cause). Don't buy the new shirts every year if you don't want to- I haven't bought new ones since graduating myself. However, I fail to see any benefit that results from refusing to take part in the game day experience and atmosphere with your fellow Hokies.
This kind of attitude cracks me up.
I guess I just don't see the need to get that worked up about the color of a shirt I wear to a football game. If the school wants me to wear maroon, I'll wear maroon, if they want me to wear orange, I'll wear orange, and if they want me to wear white, I'll wear white. And I'll gladly pay the $6 per shirt knowing its going straight to the piggybank of the SGA, which helps to fund numerous events like concerts, comedic acts, pep rallys, etc for the students to make their time on campus more memorable. Plus, seeing Hokie Nation unified in the stadium with everyone buying into the same cause to blanket Lane in the same color is pretty cool, and its more fun to be a part of it than to think I'm better than it.
But maybe that's just me.
actually SGA really doesn't do any of that
Yes they do. I was SGA President in 09-10. We fund Relay for Life, The Big Event, and help put on concerts and typically give money for LaughRiot over at VTU. The SGA makes like $1.00/shirt at most, which goes right back to the students. In addition, a portion is also donated to scholarship funds to support low income students.
When I was SGA President, we helped bring Maroon 5 to VT. We helped coordinate Maya Angelous coming to speak at VT, and we worked with the Black Student Alliance (BSA) to help support their programming. In fact, here is a link to our strategic plan from 09-10 if you want to know more information about what SGA actually does for students: https://www.dropbox.com/s/p6anywz3054oggo/SGA_StrategicPlan_0910.pdf?dl=0
Your taking credit for bringing Maroon 5 to campus? /s
No, I did not say that - I said we helped. The SGA paid $30k to bring them to campus, along with BSA and VTU. When I was in SGA, we worked closely with David Silb and VTU and other student orgs to do programming on campus.
I've been a director in VTU for 3 years. I'm well aware of what SGA does and doesn't do. You hardly fund the concerts or Laugh Riot anymore, at least. We haven't received money for Laugh Riot probably since you left. I will give you Maroon 5 though, that was an awesome show
That's sad - there used to be a lot more collaboration amongst student orgs to help with campus events like that.
This is the opposite of Hokie Spirit.
"Everyone is wearing orange? I'll wear maroon." For some reason this sounds much like "They call it campus? We'll call it grounds."
The effect shirts are a fundraiser for the SGA or Student Government Association and the white out and military appreciation gear raise money for charity. That is by definition not a scam.
I usually wear orange for early season games when it's still hot, and maroon for the later games. Or I'm wearing my orange and maroon VT coat, so I have a little of both.
I try to wear white to the White Out games, but that's usually Corps Homecoming, so I'm stuck in the Maroon polo and khakis for that one. Besides, it usually rains, so we get Rainbow Effect anyway.
Fireworks, changing uniforms five times a year, effect games, doesn't matter unless you win. Give me a winning and entertaining product on the field, the rest is just window dressing. Michael Vick got more new VT fans in one year than all the cool colors and effect games of a decade
Haha, he did win me over, I'll give you that!
In all seriousness,
I'm kinda with you, although it does look cool when everyone is the same.
This kind of logic flawed. You say this as if there is a tradeoff between either winning the game, or fireworks and uniforms. You think Beamer and Foster are the ones designing uniforms and effect tshirts? No, they are hard a work trying to win us football games. That doesn't change regardless of anything. So, why not have fun and give the fans what they want, a great experience!
I didn't say it was an either or thing I'm just saying that the proliferation of extracurricular activities has coincided with the deterioration of the team's performance maybe they're trying to distract us!
I seriously doubt it. I would hope that our coaches have our players more focused than that.
I think your view of how to have a successful football team is underdeveloped.
the anOSU game being the orange effect game is kinda 'meh' IMO
Most alumni will be wearing maroon regardless...I'm sure the students will show up in all orange though. I expect to see splotches of maroon mixed in with the orange throughout the stadium. I think we would get a much better effect if it was the maroon effect game and the whole stadium was in maroon...to me, that's much more intimidating.
anOSU's stadium was quite literally a sea of red. EVERYONE wore red to that game and it was kind of impressive...I fear with the game being the orange effect game we just won't get the same kind of coordination because the older alumni will stick to their guns and wear maroon.
I thought Chicago maroon and cadet grey were the official colors? Where'd all this orange crap come from?
Our official colors are Chicago maroon and burnt orange.
Also, I'm an idiot.
WHOOOOSSHHH
Note to self :
Dear self,
In the future, abstain from commenting on TKP until you've had your coffee. Things will go better all around.
Sincerely,
Self
They were wearing red because that's their dominant color. I was there. It wasn't a "red effect game"
Well when your color choices are clearly a primary (red) and a secondary (grey), why would you wear the secondary? Showing up in white or gray doesn't say Ohio State like a deep scarlet shirt or jersey. For us, we have both maroon and orange, two primary colors which the University fully embraces. We're off your lawn, but stop chasing us down the street with your cane mister.
I don't know but we have orange effect and white effect. Why not just stick with the maroon it's clearly the most appealing color
That's the same opinion you expressed when you said showing up in white and gray doesn't say Ohio State like Scarlett
If I say "Scarlet" what team do you think of? I can't think of any other team that uses Scarlet besides Ohio State. If I say Cardinal, I think Stanford. If I say Crimson, I've got Alabama and Harvard. Few schools that use multiple bold colors associate themselves with only one as their primary. One off the top of my head would be Syracuse. Another might be Michigan. You wouldn't say that UVA is more blue or orange, they are blue AND orange, as is Auburn and Florida. Clemson is orange AND purple. We are maroon AND orange. Thus both are representative as the primary colors associated with the University. Use only one of them and there is nothing that defines them as Virginia Tech. If someone said Chicago Maroon, I would not think of Virginia Tech if I was not a student there. Even with just maroon, there are many other universities with that color. I would think of Chicago. If someone said Burnt Orange, I'd likely think Texas before anything else. But maroon AND orange are Virginia Tech. Something no one else has. One is not greater than the other.
Preach it!
Our colors are maroon and orange, not maroon and white. We're not Texas A&M or Mississippi St, so lets stop trying to look like them. Embrace the orange!
If one is not more attractive than the other one why is maroon almost always the dominant color? We wear maroon uniforms constantly we wear orange uniforms almost never
Attitudes like this are why I recently got a orange #18 and plan to wear it for every game except the maroon effect and white out this year.
It amuses me to no end that people get THAT worked up that orange is one of our dominant colors.
If you say Scarlet I think Rutgers because they are the Scarlet Knights
I think you missed my point. Let me try again.
Ohio state fans all wore the same color. It was impressive/intimidating (I was there)
When we wear ALL MAROON for the Maroon Effect games, it's intimidating IMO
I have been to several Orange Effect games and I have yet to see the entire stadium in Orange. The older alumni usually wear maroon ILO orange, regardless of the occasion. I'm not saying that one color is necessarily better than the other. I'm not saying that OSU only wore all red because they had a "red effect" game. I'm simply saying that, based on history, I don't expect our entire stadium to be decked out in orange against OSU, which is disappointing because I think that coordination gives the stadium a sense of unity which can be intimidating. It's harder for teams like VT to coordinate that since we have two main colors instead of 1, like OSU. That's why we only get 3 games that have 'dedicated' colors each year...we typically fail to be 100% coordinated 2/3 times. But for whatever reason, when we have a maroon effect game, the entire stadium is decked out in maroon and it's freaking awesome!
I wish it were the same way for the Orange effect games, but it just isn't. It hasn't been that way since the effect games started and I don't expect it to change this year.
Orange Effect is meh, huh? Watch this video and tell me that the Orange Effect doesn't give you chills.
Video
I'd say the Alumni did a fine job of representing the school on this occasion. Plus, maroon is somewhat close to red, so maybe we wanted to distinguish ourselves from OSU.
Well, I went and watched that. Now, combined with my coffee, I'm ready to run through a wall this afternoon.
Oh dear lord the Ohio State game is going to be epic.
Absolutely going to be epic. They don't know it, but I really believe Ohio State is about to run into a buzzsaw...or should I say, a Budsaw.

Bud Foster, above, demonstrates how far up the asses of the Buckeye offense he intends to stick his boot.
First: that video is goosebump inducing. Second: I kept watching this video trying my damndest to remeber which game this was. I kept thinking "We never wore anything orange when I was in the MV's..." Then it hit me: I had already graduated when we played this game against GT in 2012. I am so depressed...
Funny, because that was my first game as a student!
First thought I had when I read Orange affect was "oh yeah, they wear red".
They'll be in grey/white primarily for a road game
But the fans though?
Scarlet is a brighter red, maroon is a darker color. Brighter colors are much for effective for effect games than darker ones.
Am I the only one that sees this? I don't see why this is a problem. The SGA is raising money with cheap shirts, unifying the fanbase, and creating a very cool visual for probably the biggest game in Lane Stadium history.
Picking nits, but I still think that the 2005 Miami game will have a very hard time ever being topped for the most nationally hyped and prestigious game in Lane history. Not often you get a matchup between 2 Top 5 teams like that.
I think we have the opportunity to make the same caliber of statement in this game as in that one, but at a more critical point in our program's history. Either way, it's a 1/1a situation in my mind.
It's sad that a lot of our biggest games in recent years have all been at neutral sites. Neutral site games at pro venues really diminish the college atmosphere significantly, IMO. Think if our top 10 matchup with Bama in '09 had been at Lane. Or Boise the following year. Or USC in '04. I really like the home and home series with teams MUCH better than regular season neutral site games. We as visitors get a chance to experience another school's town and stadium, and then they do the same in return. Kind of fun.
And, speaking as an ex-MV... those pro stadiums are not suited for a band that likes to stand on their seats. Always hated those neutral site games from a comfort standpoint.
Im with you on that. Except the USC game in 04 i actually had a blast at. Really loud. I sat in the USC section and everyone around us commented on how loud it got for the entrance and how they have never seen anything like our entrance (jn a good way). USC players i believe commented on how loud it was in the tunnel. the place was packed probably 95/5 VT and this was before Fedex removed the upper bowl seats
But im with you
Yeah, I would definitely say that was a great exception. That place was packed and extremely loud. Also Bristol next year is very unique, being that it will be the first ever game at Bristol Motor Speedway and the largest game ever. Regular games between opponents in close proximity at places like that are cool, such as Florida and Georgia. Although, a home and home series with the Vols would be incredibly fun too.
so would a home and home with ECU til 2025....
That whole video is one of my favorites
Lol. And we even had a neutral site game against them in Charlotte. Why, Weaver, why?
Because neutral sight kickoff games are better for exposure.
Bristol will be a unique situation. While I am not a fan of NASCAR, the sport is second only to college football in its tailgating culture, so it's not like hosting a game at an NFL venue. That entire atmosphere should be epic for days leading up to the game.
I prefer the 2003 version (because we won it).
That 2005 was a very big game, but Miami just squeezed the life out of VT that day.
I hope I am never that alumni that is "too cool" to not follow direction from students to enhance the gameday experience...and honestly the home field advantage for the Hokies.
"I'm gonna wear Maroon even though the students are gonna wear Orange!" That is so annoying....as a young alumni, please punch me in the face if I become the alum who never stands on 3rd downs and wears Maroon on Orange Effect games.
If the color of your shirt is how you derive pleasure from the game day experience then you're attending football in the wrong manner
If you're too stubborn to wear a color suggested by the school, or think other fans are stupid for trying to be a part of something unifying, then you're attending football games in the wrong manner
I think we're all unified by the fact that we're all in the same place we all paid for the ticket and we're all cheering for the same team I don't need to wear the exact same shirt someone else to feel a part of the crowd
The point isn't that you are wearing the same shirt, but rather, the same color... That's the point of sponsoring an effect game, to get the crowd dressing in one color
I would argue that other than getting insanely drunk and making an ass out of yourself, there isn't a "wrong manner" of attending a football game. Some people go for the football (me), some go to be with friends, some go for the experience (ie Orange Effect at night like the GT game in 2012). None of those is "wrong" and no one deserves to be mocked or looked down upon for why they're there.
I will admit to being an alumni that has worn the wrong color shirt before. There have been times when I never bothered to check the ticket for an "effect" game before leaving the house for the day. But on those days, I am wearing orange or maroon.
So my chances of getting single game tickets to Ohio State are about zero
I was thinking the same thing. I do like that they made a point to say that the Ohoi State allotment will be $110 each, just like they were at Ohoi State.
The university has said the only sure way to get tickets to that game is to buy a season ticket.
We are also selling the OSU game for $110 rather than the normal $60.
My only hope is that the team doesn't wear all orange for the anOSU game. I'm fine with just an orange jersey but please not pants too. I'm not really a superstitious person but the proof is in the pudding on that kit I think.
I mean, if you want to get superstitious, lets burn the AME uniform, because we got pantsed the last time we wore them. Especially the maroon pants, cause we seemingly lose more often than not in them....
I hope the sarcasm is not lost with that statement...
Eventually we're going to get embarrassed in each uniform combo. The only solution is to play naked.
#awhlnekkedeverythang?
Hey now...this isn't Australian football!
I don't want to get VT labeled as discriminatory, so we should probably ask the dance team and cheerleading squad to follow suit.
I'm guessing our opponents' tackling will suddenly be a lot worse.
Our last labor day game (GT 2012, Logan Thomas to Demitri Knowles) was an orange effect game. So if you want to be superstitious, we're golden (err, orange)
I like the orange effect against tOSU. The doofuses on 11w will see very quickly that the crowd will not be 50/50, 75/25, or even 90/10.
Those people don't know that unlike much of college football we sell most of our tickets to every game
Does anyone know if there will likely be many season tickets left over for the public after renewals? Also, if there are, do you still have to join the Hokie Club and make a contribution to be eligible to buy? This seems like the only way I will be able to affordably get a ticket to the anOSU game. StubHub has gotten absurd. Paying that much for one ticket when I could pay about the same (or less) for a season ticket is much more sensible. Doubt there will be any single game tickets available at all for anOSU
Also, I like the idea of the orange effect for Labor Day night. Looked amazing when I was there 3 years ago for GT. Will gladly go #allburntorangeeverything.
If there are any left over, I don't think you have to be in the Hokie Club to purchase what's left. But you'll have last priority on seating and you're not guaranteed a ticket next year if Hokie Club purchases increase.
For the last couple of years, you have not needed to be a hokie club member to purchase season tickets.
Thanks for the info. I plan on joining the Hokie Club and contributing this year for season tickets next year, wasn't sure if I had to do the same for a public season ticket this year.
I imagine there will be a market there. I'm going to include a pic of me in Hokie gear to prove who I'll be rooting for
For the record I had no idea where the money for the T-shirts went. I can see the appeal of cheap T-shirts for the students. I think with every other game is in effect game it loses its appeal you have three games out of the year out of six home games that's my main gripe I'm not against a maroon affect game every every so often. But again it is every other game
Clearly... considering you've said you'll only wear maroon to games regardless of the 'effect'.
I will pay whatever it takes (probably via Stubhub) to go to the OSU/VT game.
I'd like to see some kind of cool new orange uni for that OSU game if we're going all out with the orange.
Be careful what you wish for
Boy I can't wait to see Lane Stadium decked out completely in white for a noon kickoff against Furman.
Yeah, can we get back to this? Why a white out game?!?!? It's not one our colors. The department talks about branding, and yet we are telling the fans wear "white T-shirts". I don't see the logic.
Because it's for charity. Here's the story from the first one: http://www.wsls.com/story/20863343/virginia-tech-calls-for-white-out
"A white "T" within the "V" logo used during Bill Dooley's early seasons will be worked into the front of the jerseys."
That goes to my point about it being about raising money by selling shirts, even if for a good cause. Having a white out game especially, every year, when white is not a color, is unnecessary IMO.
this sounds eerily similar to the mindset of someone who expects Whit to pay Saban Salary for the next football coach but they don't want to donate any money to the program 'until they've proven they can win and deserve the money'
[redacted]
what kind of Hokie has an issue with fund-raising for a charity? seriously. No one is forcing you, or anybody else, to purchase these shirts. You can wear the same white shirt every year anyway, if purchasing a shirt every year is so burdensome
edit: got carried away with frustration..my apologies to TKP
Redacted due to [redacted] - thanks.
Raising money for charity is fine. I was basically responding to the responses above that the effect games were to "unite the fan base" "improve the game experience/atmosphere ", etc when I originally said it was to sell tshirts. The scam wording was ill advised a better way to say it is the effect games are a vehicle used to facilitate the sale of shirts, it IMO does not enhance the Lane Stadium viewing experience. I'm going to yell, shake my keys, jump to Sandman, chant Hokies as our side of the Lets Go Hokies, with the same intensity regardless of white, maroon, orange, whatever that game. That has been the point really, unless it's a special occasion the effect games lose their luster, especially if you go to every game every year. Now if you pop in for one game here or there maybe it still seems exciting and new but it has gotten stale IMO. That's what I think you are free to love it
I'm sniping here a little bit, but I would argue that playing the defending National Champion on Labor Day night is a pretty special occasion...
So let me ask you this. Let's jump back in time to the moment Frank Beamer says to the AD that he wants to promote literacy across Virginia and honor his late mother. What initiative should be started instead? The "White Effect" makes perfect sense to me. Have you seen the logo for Herma's Readers, the open book with white pages? It makes sense to me. Your point above about selling shirts being a scam made no sense to me, either. It's clearly not, and in this case, there's a net positive outcome for the state by the efforts of our athletics department. In the spirit of college football, whatever amount is left, shouldn't the organization centered around student-athletes (we'll debate that term separately) strive to promote learning through its position within a university?
they could raise even MORE money by having every game as a fundraising "effect". Let's add:
Pink Effect - Breast Cancer
Green Camo Effect - Military Appreciation (although, if they did orange and maroon camo shirts, that would be pretty awesome)
Purple Effect - to honor our marriage to ECU
White out is great for PSU. They embrace it, they're good at it, and its become somewhat iconic. It kind of reminds me of that game where the cheerleaders tried to do the "we are....Virginia Tech" chant. We all know its part of PSU/Marshall's identity and not ours. I'd prefer we just stick with Maroon and Orange Effect and we do it with some rules:
Orange Effect - not against clemson, cuse, or UVA
Maroon Effect - not against BC, FSU, or Louisville (or at night...ever)
The basketball team had pink uniforms this season (and I believe in the past), and I think they did camo one game, as well (could be wrong on that one).
Purple Effect is hilarious.
The thing is, we can hyperbolize this all we want, but the fact remains that Orange and Maroon are obvious themes and work well. Having an additional "pet cause" at the request of the legendary head coach with an educational motivation (see my post above) is not too much to ask and is nothing to ridicule or be upset about. Coupled with Military Appreciation (which is also an obvious connection for our campus), the White Effect fits in pretty well with Red-White-Blue (yay patriotism!) and aside from the outcome of the game, I really enjoyed the White Effect look this past year.
Question...
I like in Roanoke now and made it to every home game last year except W&M. I do not intend to miss anOSU and am willing to "overpay" for tickets. Question is this though, are we really looking at $300 a pop currently on Stubhub or should that be coming down once VT opens up ticket sales to the public? I'm willing to pay like $125 a pop for nosebleeds but man, $300 is just out of my price range.
In the same boat...cannot afford $300 for one ticket for one game. :(
If you live in Roanoke now, buy a season ticket for $350 and have all the games!
Are season tickets currently available for people not renewing?
They'll be up for sale around April 20.
Thanks
Guess I know where my next paycheck is going......
Oh I didn't know that. I thought season tickets were only for Hokie Club donors but I guess that doesn't make sense with no sell outs occurring the last few years. I will be sure to get season tickets if available.
HC members get the first crack at it, which you can become a member at a $100 donation.
But sad to say, there is a chance that there will be tickets available even without a HC membership.
For the last few years there have been leftover season tickets after Hokie Club members got their pick.
Also to be eligible for the Hokie Club "pre-sale" you need to have donated the previous year and still be an 'active' member.
So to buy 2015 season tickets through the Hokie Club you'd need to have donated in 2014.
I dont think prices on stubhub will go down much. Your best bet is going to be season tickets or trying to buy a ticket on the day of the game from an alumni in Lot 1 & 2. Alumni will sell you tickets for a better price than scalpers
I wonder how many OSU alumni are going to buy season tickets and then just try and sell the other games?
I recommend buying season tickets. In my area (Triangle NC), I have heard that OSU fans are even going to buy season tickets to get the VT game and then sell the rest of them (I've done the same thing when Tech is in town against Duke).
It's already happening... Already had a couple offers from Ohio State fans who bought season tickets just for that game.
Wait... I thought only season ticket renewals had been sold? Did they buy tickets last year? I guess we know who to ask the next time our sellout streak is in jeopardy
Just gonna put this out there for anyone interested. I'm buying student season guest tickets with the intention of only using the osu ticket (probably cheaper than after-market). Since I live 1600 miles away I probably won't use any of the other tickets, so if anyone wants to just buy the rest for face value or something let me know. I'm not looking to turn a profit on it or anything.
Since we were talking about the virtues of our various colors earlier, I thought I'd put this here. I was checking the spring game time and noticed that the teams are maroon and orange this year, not maroon and white: http://www.hokiesports.com/football/schedule
Anyone remember this happening before?
Don't be surprised if they go with the 2014 Maroon uniforms vs the 2014 Orange uniforms.
last night Beamer said at a Hokie Club function there are new uniforms for the 2015 season and the players have already seen em.
there are new uniforms because Nike went away with the terrible side stripes. From what I heard our will look more like LSU's but obviously VT colors. Not much of a difference if you ask me
If that's the change that would be fine by me
Not sure about Maroon vs Orange, but recently (2013 I believe) we went Orange vs White.
Yep, 2013. And we all know how that turned out...
Wasn't that the spring game that we lost?
