What could have been was that Montrezl never gets to play in the NCAA tournament.
Sincerely,
Seth's tourney resume
In 1970, while I was in the Army in Germany, my mom tried hard to get me to invest in an oceanfront lot north of Corolla on the NC Outer Banks. While I could have probably afforded it, I was more interested in spending my meager money on, well, let's just say other things. Coulda, woulda, shoulda...don't mean dick now.
These days you probably have to be a millionaire to buy an oceanfront house
in the OBX. God I love that place.
I keep tabs on property prices there as a "someday" plan. If you buy in the smaller towns (down near Hatteras) or on Roanoke, houses can be found for under $300,000. Or, as my former boss told me, just wait for a bad hurricane season to buy.
Unfortunately he is right. I'm so afraid the islands will get washed away some day.
My favorite towns are Frisco, Buxton, and Hatteras. So peaceful.
Grew up camping at the Frisco campground. We went almost every weekend in the summer. Even quit Little League to go. Sucked in LL, so no loss either way, but found my love of fishing, so I came out ahead. Great place for families in those days.
Just booked a beach house for Sept in Frisco. Can't wait!!
Can you recommend a fishing spot down there for Frisco for my Dad
...I mean he knows about The Point...but any other suggestions would be great.
I hate their isn't a Pier down there anymore. I love pier fishing.
I would just prepare to fish the surf, and check with the local tackle shops, The Red Drum in Buxton used to be our go-to spot. There can be some really good speckled trout fishing on the sound side that time of year. You need to find a good place to access and then wade. Curly tailed grubs are hard to beat, with the various Mirrolures also being effective. Tide sensitive fish, but you should get some info from the locals that could help you hone in.
The surf can be extremely productive, and with the house right there, I'd suggest very early mornings, before the crowd wakes up. The point can be such a circus/zoo, and while it is a great ambush point because of the way the shoreline turns there, the beach north or south of the point can be extremely productive for spot, croaker, red drum, flounder, pompano, whiting and bluefish. Stripers are also found in the surf in that area at some times of the year. I used to catch a lot of fish there with light tackle and grubs, "hunting" the surf for active fish, but I've caught a lot with cut bait, a rod holder, a beach chair and a cooler stocked with "beechwood soda". Look for anomalies in the surf/beach to clue you into feeding spots. A hump of sand on the beach, a different look to the waves, rips, etc., just anything different that might change the movements or feeding of the fish.
Like you, I love pier fishing, but with an oceanfront house, I'd probably concentrate on the surf and sound. G'luck.
Most likely we will stick to surf fishing unless we can find a decent
place to access the sound for wading. Thanks for the pointers!
I'll be sure to stock up on my fav "beechwood soda" as well. :)
Those places are there, are public, and will offer decent access, you just have to either be told where the best ones are, or just drive around looking. The island is so skinny there, almost any road to the sound side will end at the sound, and a lot of them have room for parking and wading. Take a bass fishing rod/reel with you for these trout, and also for "hunting" the surf with grubs, Gulp, etc. I've caught a ton of fish on freshwater stuff down there, and if they're hitting, you'll often have more fun, and sometimes more action, than the surf rod/ bait crowd.
That's what I'm waiting for down here in SC. People are getting too cocky since the last hurricane was in 1989 here.
Outer Banks property is SUCH a woulda-shoulda-coulda.
Back in the 50's when they were first plotting properties, they were advertised as "Sewing Machine Lots"... because you could buy nice a piece of land on the Outer Banks for about the cost of a Singer sewing machine.
Heck, if I'd bought a singer sewing machine at the same time, I could probably sell it today on Ebay for more than what I pissed away, literally and figuratively, in my time with Uncle Sam. While hindsight isn't worthless, it'll larn ya darn ya. Ah, but it is, in the end, just that...hindsight.
Ah, to be young and blowing your base pay while in Germany. I feel your pain. Oh, the memories though.
I think Buzz is a better fit for the culture around Blacksburg than Greenberg and eventually will be more successful at VT. Don't get me wrong, the way we let him go was messy and hurt both VT and Greenberg. It was sort of like breaking up with someone over email.
You're giving Weaver too much credit. It was more like breaking up over text message, or twitter.
I would say it was like going from "in a relationship" to "single" on Facebook, without even talking about it first.
I can't wait for the day when he has to come watch Buzzketball and be a part of gameday in Cassell as an announcer!
As long as we win that game, and it isn't an ugly win. Otherwise, that plan kind of backfires.
Seth promoting Seth. Pretty much what you get with Seth.
If you don;t promote yourself, who's going to promote you?
So here is my question, and I preface this by saying I do not really follow basketball or him. But if he was as good as he advertises himself or others think, would he not be coaching somewhere else by now? I believe I have seen his co-hosts come and go, but he is still outside looking in as far as coaching. I could be completely off base and he might have a non-compete, or ESPN might be paying him much more than he would ever make as a coach, in which case, good for him. Like I said, I do not know, just looks like he is not a commodity in the coaching market.
In front of the camera is a much more comfortable roll for Seth and he doesn't have to deal with the stress that comes with recruiting/coaching/etc.
Are we still paying him? If so, I know in most contracts it will state if they take another coaching job they no longer get paid by the school they get fired from. Example: Our Women's BBall coach. Fired from Boston University, instead of taking a coaching job Wolff became our Men's bball director of operations. where he can legally still be on a bench and be with a program but isn't a "coach" but getting paid still as a coach from his old school.
I could be wrong but I think this past year was the last we had to pay him.
What am I forgetting that makes everyone hate Seth? Was it some things that he said after he was fired? I remember good times with him as coach, and other than the Curry mess, he did a pretty good job. I feel like we should have made a few more NCAA tournaments, but was snubbed. He was a good character on campus in the mid '00s and had he stayed, and the players stayed, we would have had some talent thats for sure. Not saying he is better than Buzz or the future is not brighter, but the last 3 or so years since he was fired, would have been a lot better.
I remember him spouting off at the mouth about not making the NCAA tournament for like two or three years. One of the years he was justified but the other year(s) he was off his rocker and made us look bad when we got bounced early from the NIT
You sir, horse, are certifiably insane!
I hold no animosity toward Seth. I think during his time at VT he elevated the program. But I also think that by the time he was let go, it was certainly time for him to be let go. He and the program were stagnating. However, the way Jim Weaver handled the dismissal coupled with his penny pinching succession plan were inexcusable. Weaver undid every bit of progress we had made as a program under Seth, and that whole debacle is one of the big reasons I say Weaver overstayed his welcome by about five years. There are some people who hold a lot of animosity toward Seth, but when I hear their arguments, they strike me as the jaded girlfriend who still can't let go of a bad relationship because the breakup was messy. I wish Seth much success in life, but I wish it for him somewhere else. He did what he could here.
I agree, I really like what he did here. But, as I remember it, we were on the down slope.
Absolutely. We had stagnated. Seth had hit his ISO ceiling. It was time to move on, on both sides. So the right thing to do would be not renew his contract, have a conversation in the Ad's office, and move on. I'm not sure how Seth, with his naturally abrasive personality, would have responded, but Weaver acted like a character from Mean Girls with the way he handled the situation.
I actually liked Seth, and he did a LOT for VT basketball and that should not be forgotten. He was a solid recruiter but he lost games that he shouldn't have and it cost him tournaments (ie everything that happened after we beat #1 Duke in 2007)
His offense was had to watch sometimes and the team could seem lost in big spots (leaving someone like Delaney to play hero ball)
He had an abrasive personality which is why his assistants left in droves and Weaver used that along with one bad season and the late collapse the season before to get rid of him.
We are with out a doubt heading in a better direction with Buzz, and it probably all worked out for the best, but I think Seth gets a lot of undeserved hate from some Hokies.

Don't get me wrong, losing Harrell definitely hurt. But just like a typical VT big man (or should have been), he really regressed this past year. Going into the season, I thought he had a legit shot at being the POY both nationally and in the ACC. Before Chris Jones was dismissed, Harrell was the third option on that team. Most consider him a second round pick in the upcoming draft, but you can't tell me Harrell improved his draft stock off this year alone. It certainly would have been nice to have him and everything, but his stock took a major hit off a mediocre season this past year.
I can't really speak to his draft stock, but I was nearly in tears any time I watched UofL play this year just thinking about what he could've brought to Buzz's team.
This is the most comprehensive breakdown of 'what could have been' and it doesn't even have Montrezl. Somewhat devastating to look at and a sobering look at what the Greenberg firing by Weaver and subsequent hiring of JJ did to the program.
And....by no means am I arguing for Greenberg to have stayed much longer, just a comprehensive breakdown-
