Here's the forecast, 80% chance:

I know they canceled a few years back but that was due to lightning. Would they still play the game if it's a steady rain like they're calling for?
Either way this really puts a damper on our plans. I'll be here all week folks.

Regardless, we'll still have more fans show up to ours than UVA did to theirs.
I think you meant too say irregardless
I'm curious if this disdain for "irregardless" is a Virginia Tech English Department thing carried forward from the days of J.J. Owen who was head of the English department way back in the 70's until when I don't know. He often enlightened us on the proper usages of certain words that we were so fond of bringing into his class. Loved that guy.
Well...I didn't go to Tech, so...not for me. lol.
The disdain is because it's not a word!! It is one of my pet peeve words also.
It's a double negative.
But it is in fact a word. It's not common, but the general disdain for it "not being a word" is baseless.
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/irregardless
I take issue with the use of irregardless even though it has been added to some dictionaries. "Ain't" has also been added to some dictionaries so take that for what it's worth.
I'm in the camp that "irregardless" is the devil and is not a proper word in the English language.
- See more at: http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/education/grammar/irregardless-versus-r...
"Selfie" has also been added to the dictionary so words that are common, whether standard or nonstandard, are valid words. But if we're going to start throwing out sites that justify one position versus the other, may I offer one myself? I'm not a fan of using Huffington Post really, but it seemed to be an adequate opposition to your Grammar Girl.
You're starting to open a whole can of worms. The English language has been through centuries of evolution and has all kinds of weird rules and exceptions to those rules. There have been grammar battles in the past, there are grammar battles now, and there will continue to be grammar battles in the future as long as the language is still in use.
I have an issue with "irregardless" because it is a double negative which doesn't technically make sense. It cannot be defended as a proper word because it is illogical. I believe the word was borne by mixing irrelevant and regardless, but that's a moot point.
I don't understand why people tend to use the word because it has more syllables. It kind of goes against the trend of shortening words. Most slang terms ("ain't", "selfie", etc.) are shorter, bastardized versions of the original words or phrases they represent. Irregardless, which goes against logic itself, also doesn't make sense as a slang word because it is longer and takes more effort to say and write than the word it is meant to represent.
It is my opinion that people who use the word 'irregardless' sound less intelligent. Just because a word has been added to the dictionary does not make it a proper word. There are several words that are merely slang representatives of actual proper words. Irregardless is exactly that. An improper word substitute for a proper word.
I could care less....
Heh.
hah
How have I never seen this? It's awesome!
To illustrate......
I guess you could say:
"Scot Loeffler's offense can only be good irregardless to the personnel he has to work with"
wow that's awkward to say..got my brain all in a twist trying to figure out how to write that.
It's not just limited to English:
The source on how emoticons are improving English is an interesting read:
http://qz.com/377390/emoticons-are-improving-the-english-language/
great find! I'm not saying English is the only language that is evolving. It's the only language that I'm somewhat familiar with
I swear..if people start talking in emoticons I'll just never speak to anyone again. I hate those darned things.
I think they're focusing more on written communication. I'm not even sure how people would be able to speak in emoticons since they're intended more to convey nonverbal cues, emotions, etc. that are already communicated in spoken communication through tone and body language. The even more interesting part of the article is the part dealing with symbols and punctuation being used to streamline communication. The piece ends with the following:
Yea I get what emoticons are geared towards. I will say this: If I were someone's manager and they sent out some correspondence with emoticons on there I would consider it highly unprofessional. It's one thing to send the cutesy smiley faces to your significant other in a text or something of that nature, but if we're talking about something a little more serious I'd say that the emoticons are best left unused. COMPLETELY off topic and not trying to start a ruckus or anything..ha ha.
I am so pissed at this point...it will be a difficult sell to the wife to drive up 3 hrs with the kiddos
I dont have a wife or kids and I'm really having a hard time selling myself to driving up from Charlotte to go sit in the cold rain for a couple hours. I certainly recognize your struggle.
Why cant it just be 70 and sunny so I can drink rails all day?
FWIW, The weather is always pretty mild inside TOTS. So I guess you are all set
you speak truth my friend... i miss tots....
...man, are you serious? So disappointing.
FWIW, the NWS (whom I would trust more than the weather channel) only has it at a 30% chance of rain, and with the cooler temperatures it probably wouldn't be stormy. If the forecast holds it may not be a beautiful day out, but it doesn't look like it'll be anything bad enough to cause a cancellation.
Edit: Also, Blacksburg in April = take forecasts from 5 days out with a grain of salt
Agree on this one. It will be a 7am Saturday morning decision for me.
So it will snow, is what you are saying
With an excellent chance of being 80 degrees and sunny while snowing.
it's happened before...
Weather forecast for Blacksburg: Yes.
Plus the NWS has a station in Blacksburg at the CRC... I do like NWS over Weather Channel. The Forecast Discussion cracks me up sometimes.
One of my friends volunteers up there. Hell be happy to know you guys actually read those. He tried to slip a metallica reference into one of the long term outlooks
Yea man - only way to truly understand what the meterologists are actually interpreting! It's good stuff!
You know, I think I remember reading something about "By the time Enter Sandman plays...."
Did it make it on TKP?
nah it was a few days ago, something about thunder rattling everything like enter sandman or something
ugh!!!! man im sitting in 2nd place in my pop warner spring team I coach and we play a team we are tied with 2nd for its the last week of the regular season no matter what happens we will play them again next week in the 1st round of the playoffs. Ive been on the fence the whole time I was going to ride up from Jacksonville with Isaiah fords brother for the game. but if the weather is going to be bad I just don't know if I can do it. ive been lying to myself the whole time trying to convince myself that if I miss it I will make up for it by being at the OSU game no matter how much I have to pay for tickets (which no matter what I plan on doing anyways) but I really don't want to miss the spring game.
Off topic, but is it supposed to air on espn3?
I haven't heard anything.
Yes. It says so on hokiesports.
I'm not even convinced the Weather Channel employs meteorologists, I'm inclined to believe they just guess and go by what would generate the most interest/clicks (I am convinced beyond all doubt they do this for snow storms, but that's neither her nor there). NOAA.com (ie. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association) has a 30% chance, and they're much more reliable.
But Jen Carfagno, Maria LaRosa, Kait Parker, and Stephanie Abrams are so so so so hot. Plus, Jen and Stephanie always wish me happy birthday on Twitter so I will accept the occasional swing and miss on the forecast.
I second the above comment that a long term forecast could change big time come Saturday.
Yes, watching these ladies is great TV.....but wait, they do the weather?
Dylan Dreyer though.
well hey maybe it will be like that game a few years ago, it rained but we got like 4-5 commitments, I am almost positive those included Bucky and Motoupoka.
Easier to pronounce than Zima, that yucky shiite Wahoo's drink. He's a Hokie and called Mo-tu-a-pu-a-ka and will start rocking some butt come this year. Lived in a Hawai'i a spell so love those Polynesian names. Not sure though if his is Samoan or Tongan.
There will be a weekly weather report once the models chill the fudge out its gonna be close though, euro has cloudy with some rain but for those of you who know, models tend to be a little off 5-6 days out. I'll be in touch
I went to work in shorts on monday. Then on monday night, after leaving a campus building, i found myself in a torrential downpour which covered the ground with these little balls of ice for about a half an hour. As I waited out the ice assault, all I could think of was, 'dammit where was eshiben when i needed him'
eshiben's like
I think we can at least all agree it's going to weather this weekend.
yes and there will be sportsing too
9/11
My Dad has always told me that I loved beer as a little kid.
This is a quote from Family Guy...I don't think it was meant in a negative way....at least I hope not.
Snow it is!
Obamacare
...um, what?
Also relevant to the post above.
Anonymous is here. . .
From the dude's profile, he's been a TKP member for almost 5 years. Either he was playing the really long con, or he left his computer unlocked and someone decided to have some fun with his account.
You know if you drink enough, you can't feel rain...
Or.....
I'm sorry, how is dressing in women's clothes going to make me care about rain and lightning less?
You won't be worrying about the rain when you feel so pretty.
Well, since you put it that way.
Don't change your plans just yet. Weather forcasts gain a good deal more accuracy 3 days prior. It typically takes 3 days for weather systems to move from the west coast to the east. Prior to the systems hitting the west coast, meteorologists use limited data from buoys and satelites to feed into the models. Once it hits the west coast all of the ground based data gets fed into the models and the accuracy jumps significantly.
Personally, I am holding off making a decision one way or another until Thursday night. They should have a pretty good handle on the actual forcast by then.
Boom! Gold star for you! I'm thinking the theme this week will be accuracy of models with and without polar orbiting satellites and time vs accuracy with models! It could be cool
If the game is canceled for some reason and you are in the burg, hit the drillfield, cause Hogs 4 Hokies is still happening. Www.hogs4hokies.org
The big questions are : Is French going to be the lone person in the endzone seats watching the O-line and where is the TKP tailgate?
I think I am going to stay near the 50's this year. It depends on if my father joins me.
The spring game is normally the only time of the year when I prefer to sit in the South End Zone.
not looking good folks, full report will be up this evening after dynamics exam/nanotech presentation....speaking of which whoever the keyplayer was that sat next to me in class the other day good luck today as well!
