VA new recruiting hotbed?

An SI story about how VA is the new recruiting hotbed

Good news for us, I guess (assuming we can keep these guys in state). Good thing we recently re-emphasized recruiting and youth!

"The way the ties are set up with these kids, I think that most of them stay in state," Farrell said. "Last year the best three guys were not even listening to staying in the state, and this year the best three, I think, want to and will."

Best news I've heard all week

Except that ...

Blanding and Brown are much more likely to stay in state in Charlottesville than Blacksburg.

#LandHand and the other teams backfield becomes #HandLand

We need to win over these top-notch recruits. It's time scouts from non-Va schools be required to present visas to recruit inside the Commonwealth.

Why UVA?

I'm trying to not be biased, but why on earth would you want to go to UVA over VT to play football? They have accomplished nothing and their coach is about to be gone. Their is no tradition and no one that you would want to play for (a la Bud Foster). I don't think the academic argument holds any weight since, lets be honest, most of these guys don't was to be doctors or lawyers. Besides a flat out lie that you are going to save a shit ass program, why on earth would you do it? I think Prince said it best, I can't imagine myself waking up at UVA every day.

I think some of these guys want to be closer to home to make it easier for their parents to come to games and stuff. a 1hr or 4-5 hr car ride is a major difference in that regard.

It was a catch

Yes but as a parent I'd rather not have a "nice drive" just to watch my son waste his potential and consistently loose. I can't believe that "proximity to home" is the wildcard that is attracting kids to a clearly inferior place.

Oh, the irony...

And yet, it's "proximity to home" that keeps them within the state of Virginia. If you're the #1 recruit in the nation, why on Earth would you commit to playing football at one of the coldest-weather D1-A schools in the country, when you could be at Texas, USC, Miami, FSU, etc.? Yes, we have a (recent) history of success, but we wouldn't have been able to build that success if we weren't able to convince some recruits over the years to stay close to home.

That said, I don't think the 2 hour difference in travel time between UVA and VT should really matter for people, it's still a drive that's easily made without even wasting the entire day. Assuming you're from the 757: you can work all day Friday and still make it that evening, and you can drive home Sunday morning and catch NFL football on TV at 1.

Somebody has to be a Hoo,

better them than us. It must suck growing up as a UVA football fan.

Stop it with the Negative Waves!

That's for kids who kick cars and that we don't want...

Did you know

Mike London was a cop? That's a big sell.

I hadn't heard that! I bet his skill with timeout management is also a great draw.

It was a catch

For some recruits, that is probably a key reason why they don't go to uva...
