The Virginia Tech football coaches began spring with lots of questions and, though they haven't found all of their answers yet, I expect they are feeling good about the state of the program. I haven't had anywhere near the access that the coaches have to the players, but I have formulated a few opinions about the squad after attending the public scrimmages over the past few weeks. As spring football comes to a close, now is the perfect time to reflect on what I've learned so far and what I will be keeping an eye on during the spring game.
Offensive Line Improvements
I had a few concerns about the offensive line this offseason, but after seeing Eric Gallo and Wade Hansen play this spring I expect that unit will continue the steady progress it's seen under Stacy Searels. The interior play of the line (Teller/Gallo/Conte) was the most promising, especially in the run game. Against the first team defense the offensive line fell short of dominance in the run game, but they were at least reliable. When the first team offense played the second team defense, that was a different story. The line mauled during running plays, frequently opening up huge holes and very rarely allowing the back to get hit in the backfield. As is usually the case, pass protection wasn't as impressive but it wasn't the disaster it's been in previous springs. The new found success Tech had throwing the ball down the field is in part due to the extra time that Brewer and Motley had to stand in the pocket and wait for routes to break open.
Brewer's Big Spring
At this point, regardless of what Scot Loeffler might claim, the quarterback debate has been settled in Blacksburg. Michael Brewer will be the starter in 2015 but it is not because Brenden Motley has had a poor spring. Motley was explosive running the ball, he ripped off two separate 50+ yard touchdown runs in the second scrimmage alone, and threw a nice deep balls all spring. Motley has played well enough that I wouldn't completely write off the season if he was forced into the starter's role because of injury, as Loeffler could build a gameplan around a dual threat QB with Motley's skill set.
Michael Brewer has been on a different level this spring, looking to finally be in command of Loeffler's offense. Loeffler won't have to simplify his tactics with Brewer in the game, he can rely on Brewer to make the correct decisions and get the ball in the hands of his playmakers. Brewer also has the advantage of being the more accurate passer of the two, especially in the short pass game. There are going to be times when the offense will struggle to run the ball against talented defensive lines. When that happens it will be critical for the offense to have a guy behind center who is comfortable from the spread, who can read defensive coverages quickly and quickly get the ball to his open receivers. That is what Brewer does best.
An Emerging Identity?
One question that has gone unanswered after three spring scrimmages is "Who will be the third wide receiver?". There were plenty of candidates for the job (Deon Newsome, Demitri Knowles, Kevin Asante to name a few), but no one was able to lock down that third spot. The third wide receiver spot is important because there are situations where you want the extra speed that a third receiver possesses. Without greater consistency and production from that position, having a fullback or a second tight end on the field will be a bigger matchup problem for opposing defenses than a third wide receiver.
The biggest criticism of Scot Loeffler's offense has been the lack of an offensive identity. This year, if he wants to build an identity he has the personnel to do it. He has an offensive line that run blocks well, particularly on the interior. He has a talented and deep group of running backs. He has a talented and deep group of tight ends, H-Backs, and fullbacks. He has three legitimate deep threats in Cam Phillips, Isaiah Ford and Bucky Hodges. He has a quarterback in Brewer who is showcasing an improved deep ball this spring. He does not have an established third receiver.
If I were Scott Loeffler, I would force defenses to commit to stopping my running game by lining up in traditional personnel packages (avoiding three or four wide receiver packages) and run the ball in between the tackles. Once defenses have overcommitted to the run, I would attack them vertically through the air with play-action passes. I would also flex my tight ends out to isolate run-oriented linebackers/safeties against my superior athletes, but everything would eventually come back to the run game. That would have to be the bread and butter, and I'd never forget it.
I think (or I at least hope) that is the direction the offense will be heading under Loeffler this year. That's also why I'll be watching the spring game very closely on saturday. Will the offense be able to run the ball against one of the best front 7's they'll see all year? Will receivers get open against a defense that plays man coverage? Will Brewer recognize that the defense is overcommitting, and will he be able to make the throws down the field to open teammates? The spring game won't determine how the 2015 season unfolds, but it will give us an idea of what our Hokies are capable of.

Josh Stanford
Is gone and not coming back.
I could care less about turkey legs or whatever it is. When I spoke to Josh a few days ago it seemed as if he is indeed on the team. He is definitely at school.
I have nothing against Stanford, always rooted for him and still do, but do you really want a player that comes and goes from the team so much? It takes a lot away from the players that are putting in the work every day, every practice.
I typed his name and everyone else is losing it. I do believe in second chances. I bet you've had a second chance in your lifetime somewhere.
Deleted after realizing this entire post centers around this discussion. Carry on.
It's not about second chances now. I support those. As an owner of a company I have given them. Just as I support second chances I also support the people working everyday through whatever issues they have and not leaving.
I believe Stanford deserves the best outcome possible, but I also believe that sometimes that's best found at other places. I don't know what is going on with him. What the issue was that led to him leaving twice, but at some point it's unfair to those that haven't left.
Not sure if you don't remember that he left the team for good, or if you are trying to make a joke...
don't get the downvotes for this comment. Josh Stanford could have been that 3rd guy. he knew the playbook and had a good 2nd season so he could have built off that. I would put $ on it that he could have been the 3rd piece. For reasons unknown to us he decided to leave and rumors started to fly. Here's to hoping CJ Carroll can add 10-15 lbs and become our danny coale
danny coale was a 5'7" walk-on?
Great white buffalo...
It added nothing to the discussion. No one has any idea idea what he's talking about and he increased the noise level in the thread. There would've been nothing wrong with it had the OP added any substance.
There was also not a discussion when I posted that either. Seems to have gotten you upset for some reason though.
You posted a name of a guy who is gone from the team, with zero context. What does it mean? What information do you have? If there's no discussion going, start one. What was the purpose of your post?
I spoke to Josh and it seemed that he was back on the team from what was said. I'm sure you understand and can see that not every post on here has context and every response isn't required to start a discussion. Glad it got you going though.
Josh Stanford.

interesting if true. Maybe it's a marshall situation where he has to prove himself again, but i'm with the other poster who thinks this may be too big of a distraction. He's had multiple chances already.
Unless he rejoined this week he hasn't been practicing.
Just spoke a few days ago. I didn't know that everyone would get into such an uproar. I'll avoid posting any more.
It's not an uproar about him, it's how you posted it. It's just like my "potato" post. You posted a name, that's it, no context no explanation, NOTHING.
Well, the source was Josh himself and the way everything is always hush hush and understandably so within the football community I thought it would be a nice tease if in fact what he told me was true. Like I said, context and explanation aren't a requirement, it is the nice thing to do but, not a requirement. I'll just sit back and stop posting like I said as there are ghostly requirements that only come into play in certain circumstance instead of all the time as it should be. I can see why I stopped posting a long time ago. It's like a shark feeding frenzy with the all the selective judgments coming from people that have done the exact same thing in the past.
Don't think we're trying to jump on you for posting. Had you come out and explained you know Josh and had a conversation with him and it sounds like he is still on the team then it wouldn't have been an issue. We probably would have had the same conversation just with more dialogue instead of Morgan Freeman, Captain Morgan & Josh Morgan.
Don't go in hiding just because of 1 post, trust me there have been much worse comments/rants than this.
Amrite guys -->
Lol I'm not hiding at all. Just don't agree that every post has to be well written or lengthy. I merely mentioned a name that I felt fit into the discussion and some thought it needed to be backed up which can't really be backed up without spilling beans. It is what it is. Not worried about it.
I really don't want to perpetuate this meta sub-thread thing, but I would like to ask a legitimate question because I care about the discussions we have in the comments section. What did you expect to be the response to a post that just said, "Josh Stanford?" I'm really curious. Did you expect people to ignore it? If so, why post it? Did you expect people to understand what you meant? Given that, prior to today, you hadn't posted anything since the beginning of last season, most people probably just assumed you check out during the offseason and maybe didn't know that he was off the team as of bowl season.
The effort it would take to type "I talked to Josh Stanford and it sounds like he's back with the team" would have been minimal and would have stimulated a meaningful discussion from all of us who are very interested in such things. Instead, we've got this crazy tangent.
I'm sure when Josh Stanford is reinstated with the team and he shows up on Saturdays you'll get your due apologies from the community. But until then, you have zero credibility and it's obvious that you're intentionally chumming the waters for your so-called feeding frenzy. You can't go posting random "teaser" posts with no context and expect everyone to gloss over it without reacting to it. That is in line with trolling.
If you honestly believe that you have contributed a useful, well thought out piece of information to the community and the community is lashing out at you unjustly then maybe this isn't the right place for you. The sabre is always looking for more traffic and you're less likely to run into as much opposition over there. I would recommend giving it a shot. It's important that everyone finds a nice safe place on the internet and we here at TKP try to provide that. If we fail to do so we fully support an individual's decision to leave and find their comforts elsewhere.
Again, Not a requirement to be well thought out and well written. I can go to any post on this board and point out MULTIPLE one word posts that haven't caught any flack at all. I merely mentioned a name that i thought should be considered in the discussion. One word discussions happen on millions of forums daily. It really doesn't bother me and I'm glad people can discuss in a non judgmental manner.
I don't think anyone is saying that it's a requirement to provide context. The issue here is that you're playing the role of the victim of an unjust onslaught of opposition to your post. The fact is you posted a controversial name trying to invoke a discussion, but provided no context. You are correct that context is not a requirement, but any sane individual would realize that context goes a long way in shaping a conversation. One word posts are commonplace on the internet. We have plenty of them here. What you need to realize, though, is that different words carry different weights. Josh Stanford has a marred history with the VT athletics program. I personally do not know the details of his situation and I'm sure there are several TKPers who don't know much more than I. All we know is that he was on the team, off the team, on the team, off the team.
There has been all kinds of speculation about the reasons for his departure and there have been numerous unfounded rumors as well. Josh and his relationship with the team has been discussed at length on these boards and it is a touchy subject for some. There has been very little evidence that Josh plans to reunite with the team. If that were to happen I would wager that TKP would be among the first organizations to know about it.
Obviously, when you consider all of the above facts, it makes sense that your original post would precede this type of debate. If you haven't realized this by now I don't know what else to tell you.
I'm hoping there was something more than what's on this thread to deserve this.
I rationalized the signal to noise ratio, but after looking through his comment history, it probably wasn't fair. Chirping at long time TKPers who were trying to help him out rubbed me the wrong way. Hammer Time over.
I'll try this again, in a more diplomatic way.
Unfortunately, context is what we do here. If you had originally posted what you subsequently wrote, no one would have blinked an eye.
As far as Stanford coming back, crazier things have happened, but damn, I'd be shocked if they let him back on.
This whole thread derailment made me a bit uncomfortable. Context is what staff does when writing articles and commenting.
Context is what a large number of TKP commenters do as well.
But we also do a metric shit-tonne of often non-contextual rambling and guessing. I didn't see anything wrong with the original comment. Could have been taken any number of ways, some funny (I originally took it as a semi-sarcastic woe-is-us joke which I found funny), some serious, but nothing deserving of the kind of piling on that happened here.
Instead, in the end it was a comment based on direct communication with the player in question -- the sort of #sourcing that generally earns a bunch of upvotes on this board because it is seen as quality information, or at the worst just some questioning of whether the source is really all it's said to be.
I think it's a little unfair to expect someone to act contrite to his detractors after getting downvotes with no explanation in response to a comment that vague.
Seconded. I would have been really uncomfortable had this dude's ban stood.
But it didn't. So we good.
Sums it up perfectly for me. I took it as the former, woe-are-we-type of comment.
I don't comment too often but read nearly everything on this site daily. I agree entirely with you. Let's instead imagine someone wrote "Danny Coale." I would be willing to bet it would have a lot of likes and nobody would have questioned the comment. I frankly had more of a problem with some of the responses. Especially from the site leadership giving it a sense of a forum dictatorship. It's ok if you didn't agree with the guy or know what he was saying. It's not like anybody knew what dork magic meant either, but we all know how great we turned that into. Let's just get along, comment freely, and respect eachother above all else. This site is better than that.
If there was a comment that just stated "Danny Coale" I absolutely would have reacted with the same confusion. I didn't downvote the original comment, but I do think it was one of the more strange comments I've read on TKP.
We now know that what OP was trying to say is he believes Josh Stanford might have a role to play as the third receiver moving forward... but we had no way of knowing that after reading the initial comment. Should OP have been downvoted? Maybe not, but are we going to overreact to the downvotes and claim it wasn't a really strange comment? Just writing "Josh Stanford" makes it impossible for anyone to reply in a meaningful way. It's just noise. Imagine if someone just wrote "washing machine", wouldn't you expect them to be downvoted?
I would have had the same response, "Junk comment that's hurting the signal to noise ratio".
I could give a 1,000,000 word response to this, but it's really effing hard to maintain a high level of discourse on a growing online community. Reddit, Hacker News (for you nerds out there) and even TSL have struggled, and in some cases, failed. A hard part of my job is identifying who isn't adding to the discussion and removing them. And to be honest, it's becoming less and less worth my time.
This was added to the community guidelines (http://www.thekeyplay.com/content/2013/july/24/community-guidelines) a while back. (It was inspired by a VTGuitarMan post.)
When I updated them it got transposed it into the "Posting a new Forum Topic" section. However, it's since been amended as being applicable to all topics and comments.
There's nothing wrong with brevity; jokes, GIFs, stats etc... can be short and sweet and have context. However, "Josh Stanford" did nothing except derail a thread down the meta rabbit hole.

People probably thought they were just being a smartass. Its possible they just forgot Stanford was off the team, but still
I didn't downvote, but did add a comment. :)
Potato
I'm thinking we're all tired of practice and scrimmage...we're ready to strap 'em tight and go out there and hit somebody. Even if it's us!
Need to see if someone can step up for the 3rd WR spot, RT play and potential backup OL, and if anyone can be a viable option to give the starting DEs a break. Also the two new safety spots and how AM does at mike.
What am I going to be watching for in the Spring Game? Three words, Bucky Hodges.
I'm interested to see how the players perform in rain
hopefully like this

The most fun game I've ever personally attended.
All the music in my flip book turned pink from getting wet (and moldy later on). It was like a trophy.
I was at that game...in North End Zone...it was awesome
Yeah that was a great game...
I brought a coat that said it was waterproof... lasted til the end of the 1st qtr and then all the seams started to leak. Luckily, I saw a ziplock bag on the ground and stuffed my phone, keys, and wallet in it.
I was not there, but my daughter was. Soaked and frozen, she stayed till the end. One of my proudest moments as a parent.
I was the only one of my friends to leave my cell phone at the apartment for that game...after the game I was the only one my friends to still have a working cell phone. I was the smart one that day.
This game day is one of the best of my life. And probably will be forever.
Free ticket.
Free booze.
A blonde picked me up from the game.
Soaked. I think put your clothes in my dryer was really a metaphor I didn't pick up in til late Saturday evening
Plastic baggies, people. Plastic baggies.
I know TechHokie13 was not actually replying to kicaboojooce, but sometimes the jokes just write themselves.
I do what I can.
Also one of my favorite games attended as an undergrad. Even under all the layers from the MV unis, my phone didnt work after the game from getting wet, my music was pink/moldy, the rain was relentless, and I didnt give a damn.
I remember we were all pissed afterwards, because our uniforms made the dorms in upper quad smell like wet dog for days.
With lots of this
Maybe some of this....

Oh I was so pissed he got tackled on that play. A DL returning a fumble for a TD in OT to win just never happens in college. We were legitimately deprived of an all time classic ending to a game in Lane during a play which essentially won the game for us anyway.
Ugh
Plus it meant I had to stand in the rain longer. Thanks, Skip. Why can't your d-line body run faster??? /s
This was the game I learned the true power of the MV rain jackets... the ability to hold about a dozen gallons of water inside so you feel like you're wrapped in a water bed.
I'm hoping the weather holds out, because I'm planning on being there.
If it's raining, game will be scrubbed. No sense in tearing up the field, or ankles for a pretend game between your own players... at least I think that's the logic CFB will use.
this is Football...not Baseball. I don't expect a little bit of rain to derail the game
Well, a few years ago, my son and I came up for the game. It was raining, and we ended up in Rector Field House playing Hacky-Sack with the softball team.
Still a great day though. My son got autographs and pics with LT3, Luther Maddy, Andrew Miller, and Kyle Fuller.
Oh, and... Mike's Burgers.
I think you're talking about the year that Bucky committed. IIRC, the spring game was canceled that year for lightning in the area, not just rain. That's not supposed to be a problem tomorrow.
True Hokies LOVE football in the rain.
I'm looking forward to seeing Luther Maddy back on the field and seeing if the Travon McMillian hype is real.
Is Luther Maddy playing?
My eyes are going to be glued to Mihota, Reavis, Peoples and Nijman
What I am watching for in the Maroon-Orange Game? SOME DAMN Virginia Tech football and that is all I need to be watching.
"Multiple."
That's an offensive identity, right?

It is on NCAA 14.
What's the word on Austin Clark? Before spring, it seemed like he had a huge amount of hype -- a guy we needed for our tackle depth. In the last couple weeks, I've only heard mention of Yosh's growth/development at tackle.
I'm assuming Clark's not quite there yet, but has anyone heard anything?
I believe he has worked mostly at guard, and that he may have had trouble catching up to the speed of the college game. I have no sources on this but I think that's what I heard.
was 3rd string RT last I saw so far.
Dang it!! If he truly upgrades the position over someone else in the 2-3 deep then I guess that is ok, but i would rather have him take his lumps at RT. We are so thin there I hate to think we lose a body there. Also if Wade can improve as much as he has looked in the videos this spring, compared to last year, I have faith clark could do the same. (that is a compliment to Hansen BTW)
I've wondered the same. I sort of believe if u aren't a starter on the o-line sometimes silence is a good thing. Either you are doing your job or you are doing as expected. At this point in Spring, I can only hope that is the case. That being said, the guy is technically a high school senior and I think you're right in assuming he isn't quite there yet. But here's to hoping this spring makes this summer a true growth period, being that he got is crash course much sooner than his '15 counterparts and can come back with a cheat sheet of what his strengths and weaknesses at this level are. Sort of like a mini redshirt season. But usually OL take a 1-2 years or more to get a little ripe anyway, so I'm gonna temper my expectations.
Baptism by fire and motivation through silence I suspect. Nijman seems to need affirmation and consolation after his hopes didn't pan out. Clark may need some different motivation but all indications previously is that he will be a stud, soon.
I see us running a lot of 2 tight end sets then flexing Bucky out in the slot without having to substitute. This would keep defenses from being able to match personnel and leave Bucky most likely lined up on a linebacker which would be a huge mismatch. The way they have been using Bucky this spring is what makes me think this is the route we go, but I'm not a coach and this is jmo.
I agree, although I think we'll also see a lot of Bucky on the outside with Cam or Isaiah lined up in the slot.
Everything they've been saying seems to lean that way. Bucky seems like he will probably fill the void of the 3rd WR with malleck as the conventional TE and then cline can be used for either as well. Was hoping bradshaw could make some noise at WR but seems to be having hamstring issues again. Having another WR that can threaten vertically would make everyone's job easier.
Sounds about right; this way we have the advantage on the wide receiver screens.
(ducks)
Yoga Pants
Man I hope this becomes a thing...i'm laughing my tail off over here..
I was really hoping Alston Smith would turn a corner this year and get on the field. Why wouldn't you root for the heir of a Legend?
I don't think he's ever put on quite enough weight for the spot and he seems to be injured quite frequently. I was hoping someone would take over Conte's OG spot and he could slide to RT, but no one seems to be stepping up other than Hansen who seems to be securing the RT spot.
I am on the Wade Hansen pancake train. Dude goes from being unknown...given a shot by a D1 A program in VT then works his ass off, gains weight and becomes a starter...we need more guys like Wade Hansen and Sam Rodgers IMO.
Agreed he's taking advantage my only concern with him was lack of strength. He was pretty weak for what you want in an OL, but i'm assuming with this weight gain he's gotten much stronger. It also allows you to keep conte/wyatt at OG and we should have a dominating interior if gallo can hold his own.
Taco Bell!!!!
Seriously, I think Wyatt was reading our off topic taco bell threads from several months ago and got a hankering.
Saw a lot of vt cars down 81 today
Touchdowns. I want touchdowns. Passing and throwing. The D is always stout. Give me O please!!!
Peoples also seems like a beast could be Rogers 2.0

Unfortunately not able to attend today's scrimmage. Anybody have a link or username and password for espn3?
