2016 DB Kareem Felder Decommits from Hokies

The Hokies 2016 recruiting class shrunk by one Friday afternoon.

Kareem Felder committed to Virginia Tech back in February and since then received Ohio State and Clemson offers. The Saint Frances Academy 3-star defensive back visited both the Buckeyes and Tigers in April.

It was a good 25 day run while it lasted.

Good luck to him, hopefully he finds a spot that works for him. The secondary depth chart at Tech is pretty deep nowadays, so this isn't the biggest set back of all time.

true. makes me want to beat the buckeyes that much more though. and maybe clemson will win the atlantic and we'll finally beat them in the ACCCG as well. that would make for a good season

Onward and upward

Good luck to him.. But this weekend when is Wayne's it pours.. #Sandman16

Just as long as he doesn't end up here, we're good

Kidding, kidding. Good luck wherever he chooses to go, he seems like a stud whose value is only increasing.

So, since the RichRod rumors:

1. Roth retired, left,
2. Marcus announced he's coming to the Spring Game,
3. Felder decommits.

Damnit, Richrod.

Bad things happen in groups of three. Whew. We're done. Onward!

Roth didn't retire, but I see your point here

It looks like my Buckeyes are going after him. An early signing period would help reduce the pressure on guys to flip; that would also help teams determine how many open spots they have and lessen the need to get extra commits to ensure a full class.

If there is one position that a decommit doesn't worry me one iota, it is DB. We seem to always find these guys and they play well. 2 stars, 3 stars, 4 stars. Gray is a savant.

Good luck to him, but his loss

Can't blame a guy for doing what he thinks is best for him. If the VT coaches can gain the favor of the 757 guys visiting tomorrow, then it'll help soften the blow of this. Still pretty excited about the guys who are still committed; definitely still have promising prospects on board in the secondary.

Like some of you before..DB s are plentiful. Pull a Horace Grant and disappear in the bowel of ohio. Bye. Also good luck. And is Marcus really coming to the spring game? IF so every burger joint in town will shut down for the weekend.

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Horace Grant? You are dating yourself there. I believe you are referring to Curtis Grant.

Not everyone is cut out for DBU.

We should mail him a DBU shirt

It's too bad because I really feel that Felder was underrated (and still is somewhat). Like others have said though, not terribly worried about DB recruits- gotta reel in those Lake Taylor boys though. It's a little baffling that DB recruits continue to big time us (meaning that they commit then de-commit when they get offers from bigger name programs) when we put DBs in the league as well as anyone. I suppose it goes to show that, regardless of position coach or system, it's hard to recruit against the big boys.

Good luck to him but who cares.....anybody that commits, confirms, decommits is not a Hokie IMO. Especially a DB, we will be fine with or without him.

It's a problem with terminology. We say a recruit "verbally commits" and then signs a "letter of intent." We mean he "verbally states his intent" and later signs a "written commitment." When a 16-year-old says he wants to go to VT and then when he's 17 he changes his mind, that doesn't make him a bad kid.

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

You are 100% correct. But I say don't "commit" if you aren't sure that's all.

Except the system punishes kids who refuse to commit before they are sure. It's in the athlete's interest to commit early in order to lock up a roster spot. Once they do, then they can continue shopping. An athlete that waits until they are 100% positive that a school is the perfect fit runs a significant risk of losing offers because spots get filled.

Maybe if you're at a position like QB, where the school is only going to take 1 or 2 at most in a year. But at most positions, they are taking multiple guys so I'm not sure that applies here.

It absolutely applies. Schools have a set number of people in mind at each position that they would like to take. You see schools running out of room at various positions all the time (see Lawrence Cager last year for a notable instance). Unless you're a 5* recruit, committing early is the only way to ensure that it doesn't happen.

I guess what I failed to mention in my post is that I don't think it applies, in February, a year before national signing day, for most positions except QB. The vast majority of kids are uncommitted at least until fall, so to me the roster spot isn't a consideration, yet.

Not only that, but they no doubt have coaches pressuring them to commit by telling them they only have X spots so if X others commit the offer is void. I would think that is especially true for a 3* since you can always fine room for the 4 or 5* as someone else pointed out. I''m not saying VT pressured this kid into committing early but even if they don't intend to pressure him the whole process has to be difficult for a young kid; add to that the "wow factor" from visiting a program like VT and you have the makings of a kid committing and then having second thoughts as other schools ramp up the recruiting for him.

Honestly, who expects 100% of 15-19 year olds to keep their word? Every place they experience is probably the best they have seen until they see the next school and stadium.

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

Especially when they commit so early. It irks me when they commit during football season or right before the season and then decommit before signing day.

Plus as everyone has been saying its at a position that we are usually pretty deep at and have plenty of more recruits that we are looking at at those positions. If he was a 5* or even a 4* I'd be a little more hurt about. Not saying he won't do well wherever he goes but you know.

This kid is a 4* talent...I don't care what the recruiting services say. Just watching one or two minutes of his film will tell one that. His size is the only possible negative that I see.

Just happened to check Felder's 247 page and it said he was announcing his choice today; I checked his twitter page and sure enough, he said he will "graduate" from OSU.

Congrats to him for making the choice he thought was right for him, but what I thought was interesting was the fact that he posted an OSU picture of himself with "Defensive Back University" on it. I know OSU has had success with their DB's, but we all know there's really only one true DBU...and it starts with a V and ends with a T.

Any patent lawyers on site? If VCU can duke it out with Texas over "Havoc", well.....?

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Texas considers themselves tge best DB school in the country. We don't have enough money to argue with them.

The guy who made them so good also isn't on staff anymore either, so...

VT, OSU, LSU, and Texas all have claims for DBU, but I think we all know who wins. Interestingly, Bama and Texas almost exclusively put safeties in the league.
