It took me a couple of minutes to warm up to it, but you really can't go wrong with maroon pants. I really hope that when they wear white for away games, they pair it with maroon pants, like they did vs Duke last year.

Stroman finally broke one!!!! I knew he was due a return sooner or later.
Hopefully he has more in him for the real games.
Stroman with some great moves in tight space to house it. Reavis had a really good first series. He pursued from the back side to fit on Coleman and assist Vandyke on the opening tackle. Kalvin Cline got into his cushion just a bit on the 2nd down incompletion. Reavis held the sticks on the 3rd down and was in good position if the catch had been made.

So I have been keyed in on Reavis. He read that Motley kept and ate him up on the keeper. He has had a really strong start. Next series of 1's vs 1's I will key in on Frye.
Edmunds and JC are going to be a good 1-2 punch at running back, if Loeffler has the patience to stick with them it'll open up a lot of things in the passing game.
We first have to pick a 1st runnning back and let him play constantly. We have got to stop this rotating running back

Not a bad first series for the young offensive line. I didn't see any missed assignments. Not a pretty throw by Ford on 3rd down. It looked like he shot-putted it.

Downblock by McLaughlin and Teller opens the hole, and a beautiful wham block by Ryan Malleck on the inside zone. That will make the film review. Beautifully executed.
I am very happy with what I'm seeing from the O-line so far. Even the 2nd team seems to be getting some push.
Really, really, really want to see more of these bootleg plays from under center. Loeffler has a really strong Play-action package, but he hasn't been able (or wanted) to get under center much the past two years. He might have the running attack to pull it off this year.
Man I hope Malleck has an awesome season. Idk if I can same move over Bucky but...move over Bucky!!

Still hurting over that missed throw to Ford. Those missed opportunities are EXACTLY why Tech was one of the worst offenses in the country last year. If Tech's QBs don't start taking advantage of the space that their improved skill players are creating than it'll be another long year.

No, it's alternating. Maroon is always offense, but they are either Team Pylon or Team Maroon based on who's in. Orange is always defense, likewise. It's a little weird to get used to at first, but you can tell by who's the QB - Brewer or Motley = Medal of Honor, Ford = Pylon.
I'm not sure that's right. Motley's squad just scored and maroon got the points.

Andrew Motuapuaka had a chance at the 5 to take down Edmunds, Edmunds put him on his back and took the six points.
I know the first team has had short fields a good portion of the time, but the fact they're capitalizing and scoring is encouraging. Also, nice effort by Trey on that TD.
Wedge blocking on the right side and Steven Peoples did a terrific job of kicking out Ronny Vandyke on the right side, and Edmunds carries Motuapuaka and Frye into the endzone. The offense, running basically go routes and bootlegs, is abusing the de-facto first team defense.
So... Our first team O has scored 24 points on our first team D in fourteen minutes of play...
Defense is more like 1.5 string, just keep that in mind. And playing on a short field most of the time.
Three starters on the D-Line and of course both starting corners...am I missing anyone else?

Well I wasn't considering if they're healthy Corey and Luther will be in there. You are right though, Nigel played a ton last year, and will really help our depth on the line.

I certainly like what I see so far. The first-team O-line looks much better than this time last year, but depth is a potential problem. Receivers and backs look good. Brewer and Motley both look good, slight edge to Brewer for hitting Ford for the TD.
I want to see Travon get all the first team carries in the second half. Protect JC and Trey, and let the young blood shine.

Liking what I'm seeing from Andrew Ford so far. Caleb broke stride there. Should have been a TD.
It has been hard to keep up with everything. From that last drive, you saw the upside and the lack of experience by Adonis Alexander. Terrific on the fade route to Caleb, but completely toasted the play before. Still, he has much better bend and back pedal than I saw watching him on film. He could be really good. Mook Reynolds has not been tested to the field side.
Not many will notice, but Austin Clark got his first series there at right tackle and looked very comfortable in pass protection.
Sobzchak is so big he's going to draw flags for too many people on the field.
Picturing him and Tim Settle on the line together -- gonna push our DEs out to the slot just because there's no room for them any tighter.

Like Loeffler said he was going to do, it's been very basic schematically. Liked what we've seen from the offense though, especially down in the redzone. Would like to see Travon get a lot of work with the one's the rest of the way.
First half thoughts- the offense is running an incredibly vanilla game plan. We are not seeing any of the jet sweep motion or inverted veer that was gashing the defense in earlier scrimmages. Trey Edmunds has really looked strong even though he doesn't look as violently quick as his freshman year. Brewer has made some good decisions (although the completion to Malleck was into double coverage and looked a bit dicey on my laptop screen.) The offensive line has been solid minus the Dadi/Mihota sack. They are getting movement and are doing an excellent job of combo-blocking and being responsible for gaps.
Guys who are jumping out on TV: Chuck Clark in coverage, CJ Reavis in run fits (at least the first two drives), Trey Edmunds with the top groups. Sobczak and Mook Reynolds have looked good for that second team defense and I liked DJ Reid putting a heavy shoulder out there on some tough runs.
Austin Clark had a very strong series at right tackle at the end of the half. He wasn't run blocking, but he looked very comfortable in his drop technique during the 2 minute drill. I really like Tyrell Smith's compete level, and he didn't botch any snaps. I was typing a tweet to comment that Nijman was looking more comfortable until Jeremy Haynes beat him cleanly on an inside hand slap to sack Ford on the last drive.

Sadly based on the view of the east stands, we might not be able to make fun of LOLUVA for their spring game attendance.

Not much to say here. First team offense looks dominant except when the ball goes near Chuck Clark. Mike Wandey was in for Ronny Vandyke on that series. I didn't see any other back ups in for the first team defense.

MIchael Brewer was awarded the Bullock Award for Most Improvement. I think that's a pretty strong hint about this fall, as if there haven't been enough hints from Lefty.
The way he's played has also been a pretty strong indicator.
Attendance estimated from VT at 23,000 from Mike Barber he said "about 20,000". In the weather conditions they were showing that's damn good.

One thing I dont know if anyone else mentioned. But the previous years IIRC it was the Maroon and WHITE game. Glad we wised up and went with out actual primary school colors for the teams.

Couple points from the game.
1. Disappointed in the attendance. 20k is a VERY generous number
2. Reavis is a beast. If he is able to call assignments correctly, he has all the potential in the world.
3. Mihota is very quick off the line, but had trouble getting separation once mclaughlin got his hands on him
4. Bucky beat stroman by 3 steps and motley never looked his way. Can't be doing that this year
Disappointed? Cold, rainy most fans have to travel to get to Blacksburg. Also 20,000 was an estimate from the media, VT said 23,000.
There was zero chance we filled 1/3 of the stadium. I didn't expect 30,000, but it was not a good showing, regardless of weather

My first film review will be focused squarely on CJ Reavis and the rover position. There was some really impressive play from Reavis, and some breakdowns that can't continue to happen when the season starts. Some of it was just technique breakdown and that will happen for a kid who is learning a new position. Some of it was a wet track and part had to do with his teammates putting him into bad spots with their poor execution.
My second review will be on OL, but I am happy to take requests for individual reviews.

After some film review and my view form the stands, I am very worried about our mlb position. I hope like hell lydon is ready to roll this fall! Motu is a good Hokies but does not do the little things well. He has the sMe problem as last year, once makes contact he is not low enough/ or does he keep his feet moving! He was driven back many times from my point of view. IMO this is going to be our weakness on defense!
I had the same concern. If Motu gets things together and can tackle well, we'll be fine. If he struggles, we're gonna struggle. If Trey can carry him 5 yards into the endzone, any QB OSU rolls out will have no problem doing the same.
