This was basically me on my couch when I saw that:
So would we wear white pants and jerseys with this? The picture looks like #allmarooneverything... just sayin that would be sick but not for a white out
I would like to see them with a white jersey and maroon pants since that kind of mimics the helmet design with white on top, then maroon on the bottom..
Take a look at the second picture on the article. The model holding the helmet looks to be wearing maroon pants.
This is also the Herma's Readers Whiteout game which in the past has always gotten the stormtrooper treatment on the field. This also means having these permanently is unlikely as in the past, Herma's Readers has funded the special equipment for that game and then the school auctions them off to reimburse the charity as well as giving them the profits. We definitely have a full set of white helmets in the repertoire, but the likelihood of these going past a game or two and then being auctioned off might hinge on whether the color part of the helmet is a sticker or the helmet itself.
So it's the Navy helmet
I'm ok with it
It sure does beat the vomit camo from 2013
and the bumper sticker hokie tracks from 2012
I liked those helmets, the jerseys not so much
but better....
Nothing beats those Navy uniforms IMO.
Yeah not gonna lie, those Navy unis are my favorite all time. Tough to say that, but to me they were executed perfectly for Navy.
Now served with 50% less chop blocks.
I actually love the look of that helmet. Kind of hoping we wear it more than once.
Definitely the best "special" helmet we've worn in a while.
I really like this lid and hope it will be put into rotation as it would match any uni combo we have.
Good way to incorporate orange and metallic, without overdoing either.
Now add in some 'W's and I'm sold.
I think Brewer should see a doctor. His head just doesn't seem right.
Like his face is missing?
That, and the black hole where his neck should be. Probably not healthy.
The jersey's pretty good...
I think it's awesome.
Goddammit. I finally rationalized buying last year's by vowing it would be the only helmet I'd buy. Guess it's time to start saving again.
Love. It.
so sloppy 3rds after navy and odu?
Nobody cares when you wear it better than them
...and Washington
Edit: Sorry, LSU...had the colors right but wrong team
Wow. That is one saaa-weet looking football helmet! Excellent!
That might be the best alternate helmet design I've seen us wear (besides the Nike pro combat flat black of course.....mmm, flat black)
I thought the navy helmet was one of the best looking I'd seen, until I saw ours. Fantastic!
Love it and hope we see it more than once as well. Based off twitter responses from Trevon Hill, Deshawn Mcclease, and even Hoo-commit on twitter (TJ Griffin), they love it as well!
I'm so about this. Anyone with decent photochop abilities able to mess around with different color/finish combos? I'd love to see this for another game or two with more maroon/orange
Kind of off topic, and I don't know if anybody else cares, but will Nike give us an update on the uniforms or at least the uniform material structure? Michigan State just got their uniforms updated with the Mach Speed template. UNC just got another refresh or rebrand after having one from last year. Not sure what Nike template they are using, but it doesn't appear to have the flywire collar anymore.
I believe Virginia Tech is in charge of when pictures of new uniforms are released
Neither love nor hate here. Hope it doesn't become a part of the rotation though.
This is another great looking alternate helmet for our Hokies
I love it. I don't have the slightest problem with us not being first. We took something that looks great and adapted it to VT. There's only so many ways you can put so many colors on a helmet until it looks like you're trying too hard and it looks like crap (pretty much all of 2012-13, except for the matte + fighting gobbler. Good job, VT. one-fer). If only this was gonna be worn during a game people would actually see...
Exactly! How is copying the pattern of one of the slickest uniforms of the last several years some sort of negative?
A bit off topic. But does everyone remember the smoke grey unis from the Bama game? I sort of wish we hadnt just abandoned them, I thought they had some potential if tweaked a little bit.
Those smoke grey uniforms with this helmet.
Stop my penis can only get so erect!
looks great (for 1 game)! now give me some matte finish maroon lids for the full time helmet and refreshed uniforms (something clean and simple) and I will be a happy Hokie!
who am I kidding? I'm always a happy Hokie!
those are bad ass..... guaranteed win just because of those
A guaranteed win, you say... At least it's against Furman
99% Furman, 1% helmets
OT- sorta - If anyone wants to see some outrageous uniforms, it's baseball, but it's about as weird a uni as I have seen in a while. Loluva is playing NC State in baseball on espn 360. State's jerseys look like a luau gone wrong. But, at least they're beating the 'hoos right now.
Edit: This post was time sensitive. The jerseys were worn in the first game, not the second. Worst Hawaiian shirts I think I've ever seen, AND they were uniforms. Gag.
So VT went full Jacksonville? You never go full Jacksonville. That's how you get Blake Bortles.
I mean, he does have a conference title and BCS bowl win more recently than VT...
Bortles is like winning the lottery compared to Blaine Gabbert.
I'm not going to lie... I would not be opposed to this being a permanent inclusion in our helmet rotation, with potential for full time duty
We typically see these kind of special helmets at least twice (Hokie Stone, White/Foil logo, etc.) and judging by the way the players and recruits are geeked up about them I'd say expect them twice in the reg. season and possibly in the bowl game [and by bowl I mean Playoff/NC game(s)].
These had whoop-ass written all over them. I really wish we could go back to something classic, and simple like these. Maybe add this helmet, or a white helmet in, but keep the uniforms the same.

The helemts we usually wear are classic, and our jerseys look pretty clean to me
These lids aren't the ones we currently wear 90% of the time?
Take the stripes off our current ones and they're these.
I don't see how those are different in design
I've always liked the orange numbers on the sleeves with these jerseys. The triple shoulder and pants stripes have started to become a little worn out to me. If we took these jerseys and maybe added a little orange/white piping, similar to the 04-07 era jerseys, I think these would still look great. I've always wondered what an orange version of this old jersey would be like with maroon numbers on the sleeves. Hopefully we will see something different this season. Excited to see what they come up with.
That's actually what I despise about those jerseys - the orange numbers on the sleeves. Hate 'em.
I have heard from a creditable source from inside Under Armor that Under Armor is looking to take VA Tech from Nike. And that it is likely happening in two years.
Don't like the idea....I am more of a Nike guy myself.
#KD2VT
I wouldn't mind that, but we'd probably start seeing some really funky unis all of a sudden. Seems like all of Under Armour's marketing tactics are total experiments that they try out at random times on random different teams. I personally like Nike better, especially for basketball. Love Steph Curry, but Under Armour basketball shoes are awful.
God. No.
I would prefer to stay with Nike
Wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. We'd instantly be one of the highest profile UA programs in the country and if they're willing to throw gobs of money at us to make it happen, so be it.
Ugh, just as long as they don't try to put us in anything resembling some of the abominations Maryland has worn. Virginia's flag isn't as ugly as Maryland's, but that doesn't mean I want to see it on our football players. Though adding Sic Semper Tyrannis could be kinda rad...
They would have to do my palette swap to make it work though:
always wondered what that dude has in his left arm...
T-Shirt cannon?

NO
#sources
Switching to UA would make us their 4th most important program (Auburn and Notre Dame are bigger, Maryland ahead for obvious reasons). Unlike Nike where we don't even crack the top 10.
For those of you thinking UA does weird stuff with the uniforms, like Oregon, thats only really for Maryland. Their unis for Notre Dame and Auburn are sleek and traditional
Idk, they've done some pretty weird stuff with the basketball uniforms tho. Those gold/emerald green unis Notre Dame wore every game during both the ACC and NCAA Tournament were God awful.
True but I'm not partial to our basketball unis. I do think that UA would get rid of the shoulder stripes for football and give us a look much closer to our beautiful early 2000s ones
I've said this numerous times before, but I honestly love our football uniforms now. They're classic, but at the same time they're not boring either. I hope we stick with them for a long time. If we wore the orange jerseys more, that'd be sick. I thought the orange jerseys with the maroon pants this weekend were super fresh.
I'll just leave this here.
Ironically that's almost everyone's reaction when reading your signature (except the two other guys in said signature)...
I didn't have a better place to put this, but my tracker looks like 2010 all over. So much Joe
Welp, time to start saving now for when they auction these off.
These things are going to make so much money for Herma's Readers.
Here's a question, did we have to get permission to use this helmet design from the Navy? I know ODU also uses this template, so would they have to have gotten permission as well? Im just curious what the process is
We didn't have to
If you had to get permission to use any uniform design element that originated with another school, that entire market segment would be a permanent quagmire of litigious bullcrap.
Ah yeah kinda like the shoulder stripes on our jerseys and LSU's right? Interesting that any school can borrow any design element they want given the nature of copyrights and whatnot these days
I don't know how all the contracts work, but I think it's the fact that the likes of Under Armour, Nike, etc own the designs. We have a contract with Nike for them to provide the uniforms. They can't infringe their own copyright. I'm sure the school agrees to the design, but Nike is only going to provide so many options.
See that makes much more sense. Like I was saying, I knew there had to be legal restrictions somewhere, I just wasnt sure where they were coming from. Companies like Nike holding the rights is obvious in retrospect
In real practicality, there is really nothing to protect. The amount of money made from one helmet design of one company that infringed on another wouldn't outweigh the litigation costs anyways. So, even if it was a UA design and Nike infringed on it, I doubt there would a suit, because (1) it would be too costly, and (2) by the time the litigation is over 2-5 years, it will be irrelevant. If it was a jersey sold to the masses - that's a different story.
But, here's a summary on fashion IP from Forbes.
I'd guess that the helmet designs have nothing to do with the apparel companies at all. Hydrographics Inc. is the company that came up with this design for Navy and I'm guessing made the ODU, LSU, and our new ones as well. They are the company responsible for the Oregon helmets as well as some of the high profile one off helmets as well (UNC chrome and blue chrome, Notre Dame, Mich State chrome, Hokie woodland camo helmet, etc.). They are the best in the biz as far as the helmet hydro wrapping is concerned. I think people that want to buy these at auction will be unpleasantly surprised at how expensive the opening bid will be from the conversations I've had with the UNC equip director. I think he said the blue chrome ones they had were somewhere in the $1,100 range between cost of the helmet and wrapping of helmet and mask.
Yeah, I've read before that to outfit a team with normal helmets is usually in the $30,000-45,000 range, but the chrome lids are over $100,000. It's always puzzled me how or why the Tulsas of the world find the coin to do that.
Even if we don't keep this helmet design permanently, the metallic orange VT logo should definitely make more appearances.
The matte maroon would also be a nice touch on some helmets.
I think it's funny when people say our current unis are tired and non-traditional. Many forget they were brought back as "throwbacks" in the Bryan Randall years. They were so sweet and well received we made them the standard.
Yes and no...
Yes, they were brought back... the maroons for the 2002 WVU game

And the whites for the 2003 Temple game

We played like crap in each game (loss to WVU after Randall threw a pick in the end zone from the 5 yard like in a 3 point game with 19 seconds to go... and a very close win over an awful Temple squad) and the uniforms were subsequently buried. It wasn't until we brought them back out for the white out game in 2010 (I want to say as an homage to Beamer) that they really started to take off and get popular with the team. Also didn't hurt that we Danny Coale'd the hell out of FSU in them in Charlotte that season.
