While WR coach Zohn Burden might be the new kid on the block for the Hokies in Virginia Beach, that doesn't mean recruiting coordinator Bryan Stinespring has suddenly stopped visiting his old stomping grounds in the 757.
For years, Stinespring has checked in at Chesapeake's Western Branch HS to get a look at the team's promising prospects. Most recently, he's turned his attention to the team's rising senior OLB Arman Jones.
Stinespring stopped by the school two weeks ago on April 15 as part of a swing through the region, and the visit convinced him to schedule a quick return trip to Western Branch for Burden. Staff at at the school say Stinespring came away thrilled with the way Jones has developed since the last time the pair met.
"He's been recruiting Arman for the last year," said Jarome Bell, the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Western Branch.
Bell says that Jones, who's rated a 3-star prospect by the 247Sports Composite ranking, experienced quite the growth spurt in the last two years, jumping from a 6'1", 195-pound sophomore to a 6'3", 220-pound junior. That has the Hokies a bit unsure of where Jones might play at the next level, but intrigued all the same.
"He said they want to recruit him the same way as Kam Chancellor, a guy that's versatile, and could play that outside linebacker or strong safety role," Bell said. "He could be a perfect whip for them."
Jones demurs at the lofty comparison, but says it was certainly nice to hear from the Hokies.
"It was great to hear his name brought up, but I'm not going to be the next (Kam Chancellor) or anything like that, but I do have a body setup similar to his," Jones said. "It's just about understanding what I can do."
The question has to do with Jones' skill in coverage. If he has the ability to keep up with receivers when he drops back, then an offer from Tech could be on the way very soon.
"They want to see me run around more, check receivers in the slot," Jones said. "Until then, they're just not sure about my position."
Jones notes that he's spent time at both OLB and SS at Western Branch, giving him a chance to both rush the passer and cover the slot, which could end up serving as good preparation for an eventual move to whip linebacker or rover in Bud Foster's defense.
The Hokies plan to get a closer look at Jones next week, before getting him to Blacksburg for his first visit to campus in June.
"Coach Burden is planning on coming back here on May 6, then they want him to come up for a one-day camp on June 13, just to get a feel for how he plays in space," Bell said.
Bell says Jones has attracted interest from schools across the country, but the position conundrum has held many back from offering just yet.
"They're all having the same issue: where is he going to be at the next level?" Bell said. "That's why some aren't pulling the trigger right now. It'll probably pick up as we get to May and he starts going to camps."
It's not as if Jones is without concrete offers, however. Schools like Navy, Harvard and Air Force have all offered, while Oregon has offered him a spot as a preferred walk-on.
Bell says those schools, and others, have come away enamored with Jones' pure speed.
"He's extremely fast, he came off the edge for us a lot last year," Bell said. "Coach (Brent) Venables from Clemson thinks he runs like a gazelle."
As teams like the Hokies try to get a handle on Jones' ability to keep up in coverage, Bell believes the team will give him plenty of chances to prove himself next year.
"The way we used him last year, he got to step out on number two receivers some, but he needs to do it more," Bell said. "That will be a big focus for him next year."
Jones will have a prime chance to show off his development in that area of his game if he is able to make it up to Tech's camp this June. He says he hasn't made a final decision on it just yet, but he's heavily weighing making the trip.
"I've never been to Blacksburg, so I'm really considering it," Jones said. "It seems like a great opportunity."

Wow. I know it sounds strange given the names, but I am very impressed by that offer list.
Love to get this kid if we can find a role for him. If not, it sounds like he's got a great future with or without football.
When I read his quote, it seemed like a really thoughtful response for a 16-17 yr old kid.
Then I saw his offer list...
6'3" 220 Junior that will be an OLB or Rover for us? Yessir.
Air Force, Navy and Harvard??? A 4.5 laser timed 40 with size??? That's impressive! Hope he gets a Hokie offer!
Sign him up.
"He said they want to recruit him the same way as Kam Chancellor, a guy that's versatile, and could play that outside linebacker or strong safety role," Bell said. "He could be a perfect whip for them."
You had me at Kam Chancellor.
somebody send this kid a DBU shirt...
Impressive offer list, lets hope the Hokies are the next one as there is plenty of opportunity in our secondary and lb corps in the coming years
As much as I want to see our team succeed, GO TO HARVARD! A free ride to Harvard would put this kid in an incredible position for his future. A very small percentage of players make it to the NFL and a smaller percentage of them last in the NFL. Fair or not, that slip of paper from Harvard sets a person up for life.
... and going to Harvard doesn't rule out the NFL. I think the Ravens have a center from the school. Started following them while in an evening program there and while the Crimson will never be confused with the Crimson tide, it's still CFB.
Matt Birk was a center for the Ravens for a few years who went to Harvard, but he's since retired.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, sometimes starting QB in the NFL is another Harvard alum.
The starting fullback, Kyle Juszczyk, went to Harvard
While I agree with you, I don't think it's quite a free ride. I know Ivy Leagues schools technically do not have athletic scholarships. Though I'm sure they have tons of other financial aid they can push his way, even still; it may not cover everything.
The Harvard endowment is probably larger than the entire endowment for all the ACC schools. They can afford to offer full rides.
They probably use FAFSA and similar tools to calculate the "expected family contribution," and cover everything else.
Ivy league school do not offer athletic scholarships, however ANY student whose family makes less than 65K gets an entirely free ride. From 65K to 150K your family contributes 10% of annual income. Costs cover room, board, books, tuition, some travel to and from home, etc..
2015 Virginia High School Football Gatorade Player of the year is going to Harvard. But his parents make more than 150k so he is not getting a free ride.
This article I looked at yesterday after I read hokieman32's post says that at most Ivy League schools, students whose families make under about $65,000 a year usually get the equivalent of a free ride and students from families with incomes between $65,000 & $180,000 generally pay about 10-18% of their income on a sliding scale. Also if another Ivy League school evaluates them as qualifying for more aid, most schools will match the offer. The students still have to make it through the Ivy League School's admissions process. The coach does usually give the admissions office a list of prospective athletes, so they have a bit of an advantage over the other applicants, but they aren't guaranteed to get in.
The article also mentioned that Brown has recently cut 20 athletic scholarships, much to the disappointment of their football coach and this coveted QB recruit from Texas:
Yes, the Harvard endowment is massive but there are A LOT of fingers in that pie...and even more who are trying to get their fingers in that pie.
Besides, as someone else alluded to, Ivy League schools don't offer athletic scholarships...and Harvard doesn't offer scholarships...athletic or otherwise. They offer need based assistance only.
Lets put it this way. 100% of Ivy league football players are on full-ride academic and/or financial aid scholarships.
Not true.
I agree, not true. A very close friend of mine's son, who a couple of years ago was the highest rated HS player in the state of MA according to ESPN after his junior year at BC High (not saying MA is a hotbed of football talent, but still....) is at Princeton. Yes, they did receive a lot of aid, but no, not a full ride. Obviously, he's a very smart kid...and just a good kid at that.
How about football and undergrad at VT and Harvard for post grad work, before or after the NFL. I mean, just trying to strike a happy medium here.
I'm pretty cool with one of the coaches up there and they say this kid PC 335, Bench 335, Squat 465, SLJ 11.5
Vert 37, his best laser time was a 4.47 down at the Army All American Combine. #3 LB in the NATION as far as his Nike Sparq score according to the Nike Sparq leaderboard with 111.63. So he's probably legit. Also he's a 4.0 student or very close.
I'm sure Harvard will find enough money for his education if he chooses there. Also heard Stanford is recruiting him too.
Wow. Nicely done, parents. Your kid is awesome at life.
Seems like a great kid. How often does Bud use the 'whip' position these days? I think a whip was on the field <30% of the snaps last season no? Does this indicate some future (or current) mods to the already hybridized Hokie D?
There's really a couple reasons why we haven't used the whip quite as much lately. For one, it's easier to defend all of these spread teams with a nickel package which takes the whip off the field. But the other reason is that we haven't really had a do-it-all type of whip really since Cody was here. We've had some great pass rushers (Tweedy) and some steady tacklers (DiNardo) but no one that's been able to do those things, as well as cover out in space like all of the great whips were able to do. That's definitely part of the reason why Bud has been so high on RVD because he knows the Ronny can do everything necessary to let us run our base defense a lot more frequently.
Awesome kid! AFA! Retire around 40 as a full bird cornel and double dip with whatever you want to do. Hold it the Dems will destroy the military. Come to VT!
As much as I may (or may not) agree with you, politics are strictly off-limits here Musky. Come to VT sounds like the right answer though for an academically and athletically gifted young man. Would love to see an engineering or hard sciences student-athlete smashing QB's on Saturdays. Welcome to TKP, and I will give you a turkey leg for joining the site, now you should really take a moment to read the rules of engagement, aka the community guidelines. Top right of the page, last time I checked.
Chopped off at the "leg"! Hold it I meant Debs like in debutante.......cough, hack, wheeze. I can't type! I got a slot car track from Santa one year and broke some pieces because, wait for it......I didn't read the directions.
I would love to see this guy come to VT. It almost reads too well to be true. It sounds like he and his family will make the proper decision on his direction. Sounds truly classy. I really see the competition as Vandy here. Our calculus kicks Vandy calk every day!
Love the Freeman thing!
"Would love to see an engineering or hard sciences student-athlete smashing QB's on Saturdays."
So I'm a nerd with no life and actually went and looked up what a bunch of the football players are majoring in, and a few of them were really impressive. If my memory serves me correctly, Travon McMillian and Adonis Alexander are both contemplating majoring in engineering. Also thought it was cool to see Vinny Mihota is a Mathematics major. That sounds miserable, but hats off to him.
Edit: Facyson is also pre-med. Quote from hokiesports: "Majoring in biological sciences with a goal of becoming a heart surgeon."
Nerds run the world Birdman, they are just too humble to admit it. The smart ones usually end up millionaires too. Stick to your guns, it's pays in the end if you add a good dose of self-motivation. This nerd flew helicopters in the Navy all over the world, then chased bad guys for the FBI. Nerds rock!
Haha appreciate that my man. And thank you for your service.
I also heard he is majoring in Engineering and VT is his #1 school on his short list
This guy just flat out destroys people on the field.......Bud Foster's "ear's pinned back" mentality is written all over him.
Heard Georgia, Vanderbilt, and Michigan were all in to see him recently
Just saw Arman Jones just received offers from Davidson and Cornell
I tear up a little thinking about the last guy who went to Davidson that we could have got...
This guy needs an offer yesterday
Reading about a perfect whip is kind of like listening to a salesman try to sell you a top of the line CD player. If this was five years ago, I'd be all about it.
Now, honestly, if this young man is as advertised, he'll find a spot where he's on the field way more than the whip is. It just makes me wonder how familiar this coach is with our defense to be promoting his player for a position that's on the field about 30% of the time.
Yeah he probably is a VT fan from the old days when the whip played more. Maybe he meant he could be a perfect whip and just not promoting he play as a whip. You never know. Looks to me this kid could play anywhere. I hope he comes to camp. But I'm just glad he's at least promoting his player to be a Hokie.
Yes and I am really excited about this kid! I just think he's too good to wind up at a dying position. He's young, so there's a couple ways he could go. If he bulks up, he could be a mike or backer, or if he retains his speed, perhaps rover. I definitely agree, we'll find a spot for him.
6'3 220. Sounds like a DE. If he gains any more weight he'd be a DT at Tech.
Hence why VT hasn't offered yet. They don't know where to play him yet. Hopefully if he comes to camp this summer they will be able to answer some questions. Maybe if Zohn goes there on Wednesday and likes what he sees he may come back with something positive. But I don't think that kid will be putting his hand in the dirt no time soon.
Army offered yesterday.
My friend said Stiney was in attendance yesterday at their college day showcase.
