edit: no your not beazy! but my friend (whom looks a lot like your profile picture) was watching the draft and saying the exact same thing. 4 sacks in the bowl game and absolutely dominated him.

That would have been ideal and get more picks, but maybe they didn't have any trade partners? And Giants were in love with him, so unless you were going to trade down to the #6, 7, or 8 picks, this was a great pick for the Redskins. Filled a decade long need.

Maybe. But to get the (seemingly) consensus top offensive lineman in the draft at number five ain't nothing to shake a stick at. I'm happy to see the Redskins make this move.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Takes two to trade, and there was no way Scherff would have fallen past the Giants, so that means only the Jets, Bears, and Falcons were possible trading partners. Probably just wasn't an option.
Apparently he was number 3 on the team's big board, behind Fowler and Cooper, so it was BPA too.

They have had 2 starters the last two years with Stacy and Mason. I understand not passing on a talent like Gurley but you've got two bowling balls in the backfield already. Seems like there are more important positions to focus on unless they are going to start wheeling and dealing RBs.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Stacy was arguably the most disappointing fantasy player in the league this year. He was my RB1 in two leagues so that was fun for like a week. Gurley is a tough pick, I like it.

Why the literal hell would the Colts pick a wide receiver as their first round pick, especially since we haven't had a first round pick in a year. There are so many holes on our defense that we could have started to address. I'm afraid the franchise is going back to its old habits having a stacked offense to please their star quarterback and ignore their defense for years on years.

Rumors starting flying around the twitter world that the Eagles were going to take Bryan Bennett at 20 (SE Louisiana QB, started his career at Oregon) when he was projected to go way past the first round. That would have made the first round ten times more exciting/interesting but it sadly turned out to be nothing more than rumors.

I was thinking this same thing. He must be viewed as having a higher ceiling in the NFL than he was able to product in college. I did like Gruden's analysis about him though, and the clips they showed of him showed him getting TONS of separation on DBs.

Really wish Al Davis was still alive...he was always good for an insane off the walls pick. Plus then I could realistically say there's a chance for kyshon Jarrett to go in the second round

Yeah, you're right. And my comment was premature. Was actually really surprised how well the Skins did in this draft. Maybe the new GM is turning this ship around. One can hope at least.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
From the looks of things...he has. I don't agree with every one of the picks, but I LOVE the fact that the GM stated the type of player he wanted and then he STUCK TO IT...vs the "ooh....a piece of candy!" approach. I think Scherff could've been had later..but you can't say for sure..so I don't hate that pick.

Lots of Panthers fans throwing a fit over the Shaq pick but I love it considering what was on the board. That is a fearsome front 7 we've got and this guy looks like he can be a defensive weapon, not just your run of the mill OLB.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I don't know why so much people are throwing fits. All of the OTs we wanted were gone (and all of the OTs worth going in the first round as well) and Gettleman already said that there is a ton of WR talent that will be there in coming rounds. We needed a LB that could cover TEs in the worst way, and Shaq is exactly that.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Also the Hokie in me is glad to not see another 1st round WR so that Boykin gets a better chance. Plus I just didn't see any I thought were worth the pick.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I like the pick. After Humphries went off the board, I had no idea what we were going to do. Some people may be upset that we didn't draft a blatant need, but hopefully this works out like the Luke Keuchly pick. We still had Beason playing well when we drafted him.

Getting Gregory this late would be a very good value. The weed stuff is questionable, but he's a first round talent. La'El Collins from LSU is another interesting former first round prospect for the 2nd or 3rd. He's dropping because of the police investigation, but there's been no indication that he's in any kind of trouble, would be amazing if we could really bolster the line in this draft.
I could see Landon Collins being a good bet as well, although scouts seemed concerned about his coverage skills, and we really don't need another safety who can't cover.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I don't get why the Redskins think the D Line is one of their biggest concerns. Yeah, we lost Orakpo but it seemed like he got hurt every game this year anyways. Let's talk about our defensive secondary. I've read that this year's draft class is not exactly stacked with DB talent, but we have to pick up someone in the second round. For crying out loud, our best CB is a 30+ year-old D Hall who is coming off not one, but two ACL surgeries. Pretty bad.

The Redskins/Seahawks trade surprised me. I guess Seattle feels they're pretty well set up and don't need rookies, except for one they wanted to get thirty picks early. Or maybe they just wanted to go to bed.

Jay Gruden's thoughts on Jarret, repeatedly describes him as "physical":
"A little bit undersized for a safety. He's 5-foot-10. But when he brings it, he brings it. He's a tough guy. I think he's going to be very good on special teams, and he'll have to try to work his way into the lineup [on defense]. Very physical player, very productive player at Virginia Tech, and we liked what we saw on tape, and we liked his demeanor and the way he plays. Physically tough and makes up for not being 6-foot-2 or 6-foot-1 with physical toughness and on special teams."

The Vikings have killed it this draft for me. Getting a tackle who when healthy is a first/second round talent and getting Stefan Diggs in the 5th. Keeping Peterson looks to have been a great decision
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Dallas opted not to take a RB in the draft, which must mean they are happy with what they currently have on roster. Good news for RW; hopefully we'll see plenty of him in a rotation with McFadden and Randle this year.

The prevailing view here in Texas is that Jerry is adamant about getting Adrian Peterson one way or another and will do so. Still not a bad situation for Ryan to be in.

An Adrian Peterson trade before the draft was a longshot; now that the draft is over, it's definitely not going to happen. AP will be in a Viking uniform next year.

24 underclassmen declared and didn't get drafted. I really hope they got a degree before they left behind that free education. Is this a product of a younger generation wanting everything sooner or just really bad advice getting into these kids heads?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The better question is: of the players that received first- or second-round grades (i.e. the NFL saying "yep, you're good to go"), how many were not drafted?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
An additional interesting question: if a player is given a first- or second-round grade and he goes undrafted, should he be allowed to re-enroll in school and play? If he was given bad information, why should that hurt him? Guys that are jumping against good advice I can understand, but if you're given indications of "you'll be drafted" and you get left out in the cold, what's the solution?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Only if they didn't leave school to prep for the draft. These guys know the risk they are taking by declaring for the draft. Many of them even get advances from agents or agencies.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Once you declare for the draft, you can sign an agent, sign endorsement deals, make commercials, get paid, before the draft even happens if you choose. You've renounced your amateur status. Now it's a different discussion about whether these guys should be getting paid/be able to sell their autographs/be in commercials while still in college anyway...
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Sure, all of that can (and does) happen. What I'm saying is there should be a paradigm shift. If the emphasis in the NCAA is always "student first, athlete second" (their words, not mine, whether or not that's believable) then there could be a re-entry procedure. If the NCAA cares, as it claims, to want athletes to get their education, then this should be a no-brainer. Not saying it would be easy to work out all the details, but I brought it up as an (hopefully) interesting idea. There would be lots of caveats and I think it should only be for the guys who the NFL basically told would get drafted (because that's pretty much the point of the new system) but didn't.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I wasn't saying your idea didn't deserve consideration I guess I was explaining the NCAA's view. I'm sure they could let you back in if they wanted to. Hell they could let you sell your autograph, and I would be surprised if a court ruling at some point doesn't allow that as well, you have the right to make a living if you choose and in my mind they can't restrict it. Granted it's a slippery slope but this is America, the $$ will win out eventually. It's also possibly an NFL rule that if you go undrafted then you can't go back into the pool of guys who are draft eligible the next season, I think that's basically what they told the guy from LSU.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
If the La'el Collins situation is all cleared up and he is free to sign anywhere, it could be quite possible that he is the most sought after UDFA of all time. I mean before the police investigation he was a projected top 15 prospect and mid-late first round pick.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Honestly not that much. The only seniors who weren't drafted and had playing time were Caleb Farris, David Wang, Derek DiNardo, and Detrick Bonner. Bonner could find his way on to a practice squad and I see there are reports that Farris might as well, but ultimately Farris couldn't stay entrenched as a starter, Wang suffered numerous injuries and really gutted it out to finish his eligibility, and DiNardo doesn't easily translate to a position in the NFL.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Ah, didn't see him on the depth chart I was looking at. That being said, similar statements apply to Williams. He was a one year starter who was solid enough at VT, but missed games due to injury, didn't make many big plays, nor seem to possess special athleticism.
Edit: I'd agree with 97VT that it seems more likely that he'll end up in a coaching capacity.

Williams was really hurt by the fact that he was buried on the depth chart for almost his entire time at Tech. Buried on the bench at a time when our LB play was not at really high levels was not a good sign. He was finally shining in his only year as a starter when he got hurt. That can't have helped his chances.

So no players signed UDFA contracts. Several have been invited to tryout, including: David Wang with Arizona, Chase Williams with the Jets, Caleb Farris with the Colts and Detrick Bonner with Carolina.
Edit: Looks like this is it for rookies, not a great showing for Tech but not completely unexpected based on number of players who graduated. Looking at the total number of players who COULD end up on an NFL team in some way this year is promising however.
Edit2: Chase Williams now has a tryout with the Titans.

GO ROCKETS!!
There's hockey on
Let's Go Caps
Can't wait to see what pick my Redskins pull out of their butt this year. I swear if we pick Mariota, I'm flipping ish and picking a new team.
Happy Draft Day! May your linemen be big, your receivers fast, and your team draft a Hokie or two.
This is my year to finally pick an NFL team, choosing between Tampa, Jacksonville, Charlotte and Houston. Whichever drafts a Hokie gets my fanship.
Bears have fuller Montgomery and royal. Whoever gets picked up this year probably won't see the field
The Bears were in the discussion, my father in law is a huge fan, but I don't want to jump on a team with such a long history and be some bandwagon come lately.
Panthers just signed Boykin. Easy choice.
All I know is that I still hate Jameis Winston and him being picked number one from HIS HOUSE does not help his case.
He was at his home because he wanted to be with his grandmother whose immobile. Nothing wrong with that.
Well that's different. I just assumed he' been fitted for an anklet and was under house arrest...
Yeah I had no clue. My bad.
Can we draft a new NFL commissioner?
Adam Silver for NFL commissioner
Or quite literally anyone other than Roger Goodell.
Goodell tries so hard to seem human but its just not in his programming.
He needs to hire Sam Rogers' programmer.
Some files are corrupt beyond repair. He needs more than a new programmer
A hard reboot you say? I think every fan and player should get to give him one.
Sam Rogers can deliver a hard reboot without turning off the power.
Has anyone tried turning it off and back on?
If all else fails, either mash the CE button or hit ctrl+alt+delete
Nah, just blow in the cartridge. Foolproof.
Don't forget to bang it against your leg.
Okay, so how did that go...Well, yeah, but that's an important part of the process...Yes, if you don't complete that part, there's no way you're going to be able to do the next bit...Okay, so now... TURN IT BACK ON AGAIN!
I think it's awkward, but also hilarious, that the fans continue to boo roger goodell
No, it's just hilarious. And after how he handled the Ray Rice thing, I would be booing too.
Redskins could have traded back and taken Scherff.
That's exactly what I was thinking
Seriously. You spend a top 5 pick on a franchise LT. Not a RT/G
Not the Redskins. They waste draft picks like few others!
We had a true freshman dominate him in our bowl game. He's an exceptional freshman, but Scherff is supposed to be the #5 pick too.
A major knock on him was that he didn't have the feet or reach to be a left tackle and he was really only there because he was the best Iowa had. I'd imagine putting him on the right side or at guard would help negate that (or so my optimism suggests).
Hes going to be our RT or RG according to Gruden
because Morgan Moses _____ (Fill in the blank)
Got beat on that student-step spin move for the sack
beazy? lol
edit: no your not beazy! but my friend (whom looks a lot like your profile picture) was watching the draft and saying the exact same thing. 4 sacks in the bowl game and absolutely dominated him.

St. Louis with the reach of the year, wow.

Zac Stacy's tweet "Yikes" had me laughing a lot
The ACC and PAC 12 are looking good with this Draft compared to the SEC.
Yes, by my count 9 ACC players including the top pick (barf) in the first round.
Why the literal hell would the Colts pick a wide receiver as their first round pick, especially since we haven't had a first round pick in a year. Because TY won't be there next year.
I gotta say, this years first round was pretty dull. #1 and #2 as expected. No surprise picks. Nothing really for people to scream over. Ho Hum.
Rumors starting flying around the twitter world that the Eagles were going to take Bryan Bennett at 20 (SE Louisiana QB, started his career at Oregon) when he was projected to go way past the first round. I know Phillip Dorsett played WR at Miami, but I can't remember him ever doing anything special against us.
I think Kayaa only had like 80 passing yards against us. That game was the Duke Johnson show.

Yeah, you're right. And my comment was premature. Was actually really surprised how well the Skins did in this draft. Maybe the new GM is turning this ship around. One can hope at least.
The GM that turns the ship around at Washington is the one that convinces Snyder to stop micro managing the team.

As a 49ers fan, I miss Al Davis too.
Anyone else notice that when they showed Amari Cooper highlights, there were none from VT game? Fuller really shut him down that night.
They usually just try and show highlights from the latest season.
What I do remember is when Kyle got drafted they showed plenty of him on Cooper
I did notice that as well, Fuller's are dominate though!!
FTFY. Personal pet peeve. Dominate (verb) vs dominant (adj.)
FTFY. Personal pet peeve. Fuller's (possessive) vs. Fullers (plural).
FTFY. Personal pet peeve. Incorrect use of comma and semicolon. Use semicolon when each phrase can stand alone as a sentence.
FTFY. Personal pet peeve. Superfluous use of verbs and not necessary.
Note: I am an asshole and I hate myself...
This just. Looks great; on the iPhone.
As a rule of thumb, a semicolon should connect two phrases that are related. I'm thinking a period would actually be preferred here.
I grammer good
(have fun guys)
extremely happy the Browns didn't trade up! They started from the inside and are working their way out! Shelton is a huge DT for that run heavy conference the Browns play in.
The browns are one of those teams that nobody hates because they have been so perennially bad that you hope good things happen.
Hooray the Browns made rational picks with their 2 first rounders this year! Am I allowed to cheer for them getting Duke Johnson though?
I can feel an 8-8 season coming soon, woohoo!!!
I always like hearing about Miami players going to bad NFL teams. That is what they got for choosing to go to Miami instead of Tech.
Lots of Panthers fans throwing a fit over the Shaq pick but I love it considering what was on the board. That is a fearsome front 7 we've got and this guy looks like he can be a defensive weapon, not just your run of the mill OLB.

Plus it'll be a need sooner rather than later, Thomas Davis won't be around forever.
In the meantime, a base defense of Luke, Davis, and Shaq behind that defensive line is scary.
Stephone Anthony (#31 overall to the Saints, from Klempson) was one that I was bummed about when he got away from us. Barquell Rivers' cousin.
Thoughts on who the Redskins will take round 2? I, for one, hope for more OL. But I will settle for Kendrics or Gregory.
Getting Gregory this late would be a very good value. The weed stuff is questionable, but he's a first round talent. La'El Collins from LSU is another interesting former first round prospect for the 2nd or 3rd. I could see Landon Collins being a good bet as well, although scouts seemed concerned about his coverage skills, and we really don't need another safety who can't cover.
Landon absolutely cannot cover. See the auburn game. He's a box run game safety, which we don't need
Yep, there is a reason he fell out of the first round when many people thought he was a lock for being a first rounder.
Pretty bad.
The surgery was on his achilles and not an ACL.
Breeland could be argued as being our best CB.... bringing pressure will help the secondary..we need MOAR PASS RUSHERS!! :)
How can you have 3 first round picks on your defense and be ranked 78th in total defense last year (Washington)?
Edit: meant the UW
Probably the other 8 players. Also Orakpo barely played and did next to nothing when he did
I think he is talking about Washington as in the Huskies, not the Redskins.
Our defense is bad, but we're better than 78th out of 32
50th out of 32 at worst.
I don't know the redskins were probably 78th in defense out of the NFL last year. :)
That's what happens when you loose D Hall for the year.
Edit: Repeated what others already said.
I'm not ready to completely discount it, but I'm not sure the Redskins could even rank 78th in the NFL in defense. Too early to tell for sure though.
It says a lot that 78th didn't even raise an eyebrow on me...
Yikes. Glad he didn't but this is interesting..
I take it as he thinks he's better than a lot of the guys getting drafted and would be off the board already.
That's how I read it, too. And now he's gonna channel that frustration into bringing the pain this season.
Eli harold is falling pretty far when a few thought he could go first round possibly
And Randy Gregory goes to Uncle Jerry's Home for Wayward Boys.
Wow Miami (OH) has a one year player get drafted in the second round, CB.
In TT I trust
Indeed.
The Redskins/Seahawks trade surprised me. I guess Seattle feels they're pretty well set up and don't need rookies, except for one they wanted to get thirty picks early. Or maybe they just wanted to go to bed.
Who knows, but I'm glad that we now have seven picks today. Maybe we can find another Alfred Morris-steal this late. So far so good for the Skins, I am actually pleasantly surprised.
His name is Kyshoen Jarrett.
You got that right! He's gonna make a difference immediately
Look out Geno.
Really though, if Bryce Petty can transition from that one read spread offense to the NFL I'll be amazed. Especially if he's forced into service in year one.
....Damn it, I HATE the Jets
These short defensive tackles dropping so far doesn't bode well for Maddy next year. He might need a monster year to make the 2nd-3rd rounds.
Jarrett to the Skins!
(_
..grats KJ.
But God I hate the Redskins
Yup first hokie drafted. DBU has kept on after the one year pause.
Missed it kids had to watch Fing Cailou, I hate that kid.
I banned that awful show from my house. I told my daughter that Caillou was in permanent timeout and she hasn't asked to watch that show for months.
Thankfully mines starting to move on to more Nick/Cartoon Network stuff. Calliou was her favorite for a long time though. Truly painful to watch.
He really is a whiny little B'.
Congratulations to Kyshoen!
Fitting in my mind, I have always felt that Jarrett was a Sean Taylor type of player, big hitter with coverage skills. Congrats and take care of that brother Ky!

I'm surprised that O'Leary was still available this late in the 6th. That 40 time might have warded some teams off.
He has the potential to be Chris Cooley 2.0.
Gibson is a Cowboy.
Welp.
Edit: It looks like he was traded to the 49ers after Dallas made the selection.
Edit Edit: Apparently ESPN's draft tracker lied to me.
Edit: welp
Was happy to see Gibson taken, then saw it was Dallas. I think SF might be a better fit for him anyway.
Where are you finding the trade? Everything I've read is saying Dallas still even an interview with Gibson.
I saw him listed as SF after the pick on ESPN's draft tracker. I guess that was dead wrong.
IIRC, SF had the pick, traded it to DAL, DAL drafted Gibson.
Tracker couldn't keep up, but TV was on the money.
Dallas opted not to take a RB in the draft, which must mean they are happy with what they currently have on roster. Good news for RW; hopefully we'll see plenty of him in a rotation with McFadden and Randle this year.

At least that's down significantly from last year in terms of overall number of percentage. The new rules and procedures in place (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000365987/article/nfl-implementing-...) look like perhaps they're helping, but of course one year does not make a trend.
The better question is: of the players that received first- or second-round grades (i.e. the NFL saying "yep, you're good to go"), how many were not drafted?
Now that would be an interesting Bitter or ESPN article.
I think there would have to be a restriction specifically that they went completely undrafted.
Only if they didn't leave school to prep for the draft. These guys know the risk they are taking by declaring for the draft. Many of them even get advances from agents or agencies.
This is a very interesting view. I hadn't considered anything like that but it really does make a lot of sense.
It's also possibly an NFL rule that if you go undrafted then you can't go back into the pool of guys who are draft eligible the next season, I think that's basically what they told the guy from LSU.
loluva lost the core of their defense (really their entire team) to early departures, and they still only had two taken in the draft.
Congrats to the latest round of Hokies bound for the NFL. To the Nole and Cane OLinemen taken: please protect Eli
Any word on Undrafted Free Agents yet?
Caleb Farris got an invite to the Colts' rookie camp, per Andy Bitter's Twitter feed. Haven't heard anything else, but I just started looking today.
None officially so far, been looking so I can update my post about NFL rosters. Unofficially Caleb Farris is invited to Colts camp.
If the La'el Collins situation is all cleared up and he is free to sign anywhere, it could be quite possible that he is the most sought after UDFA of all time. I mean before the police investigation he was a projected top 15 prospect and mid-late first round pick.
There is so much secrecy around that whole situation, I even saw he asked the NFL to take him out of the draft, I'm not sure how that even works.
So as of Monday morning at 0900 no Hokies have officially signed an UDFA contract with a team. Does this surprise anyone else?
Honestly not that much. The only seniors who weren't drafted and had playing time were Caleb Farris, David Wang, Derek DiNardo, and Detrick Bonner. Bonner could find his way on to a practice squad and I see there are reports that Farris might as well, but ultimately Farris couldn't stay entrenched as a starter, Wang suffered numerous injuries and really gutted it out to finish his eligibility, and DiNardo doesn't easily translate to a position in the NFL.
Williams?
I wouldn't be surprised to see Williams end up in a coaching position somewhere soon.
Jason La Canfora thought he'd get a shot:
Williams was really hurt by the fact that he was buried on the depth chart for almost his entire time at Tech. Buried on the bench at a time when our LB play was not at really high levels was not a good sign. He was finally shining in his only year as a starter when he got hurt. That can't have helped his chances.
Looks like he's getting a shot with the Jets.
No Bonner or Williams surprises me. But doesn't mean they won't sign.
Also, I've found through the last few years that NEPatriotsDraft.com does the most comprehensive job of compiling the UDFA lists.
Their AFC list
Their NFC list
I don't know if it's been posted elsewhere but Bonner is getting a tryout with the Panthers:
http://www.panthers.com/news/article-2/Panthers-ready-for-rookie-minicam...
A little OT, but I'm drunk. Just thought I'd drop that here.
unofficially, EVERY forum topic is the correct place to post that you are drunk.
But if you really want to go for the gold, you have to top eshiben's masterpiece.

I'm having trouble tracking reliable invites to training camps, anyone know a site?
Moral of the story: if Wang hangs around long enough, good things happen.
That's my Wang!
Uh...[some permutation of the words Wang Rams here]
With his history of injuries I am amazed and very happy that he is getting a shot at the big leagues.
