Hokies in the Red Zone

I remember there being a recent comment discussion on hokies getting touchdowns, field goals, and not scoring in the Red Zone

I found some stats

That last stat, you're saying that's the percentage of all of our TDs that season that were scored on a play where the ball was snapped inside the opponent's 20, right?

yes i think...

Of the total touchdowns scored that stat represents the percent of how many were scored from a play in the redzone

In 2014 we scored a tochdown on a redzone play 25 times out of a total of 36 total TDs for the season

Some added context.

Red zone scoring% ranking

  • 2010: 6th
  • 2011: 103rd
  • 2012: 18th
  • 2013: 112th
  • 2014: 34th

Red zone TD% ranking

  • 2010: 40th
  • 2011: 105th
  • 2012: 100th
  • 2013: 95th
  • 2014: 97th

I seem to remember we were also ranked very low in percent of plays of more than 20 yards.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Plays of 20+ yards from scrimmage

  • 2010: 12th
  • 2011: 20th
  • 2012: 61st
  • 2013: 95th
  • 2014: 95th

Yikes.

All stats courtesy of cfbstats.com BTW.

I think I see our problem...

We also had the worst starting field position in the NCAA.. I saw some tweets yesterday but can't remember from who.. I think our avg was 28 yard line.. Yikes.

This is inexcusable for Beamerball. I love CFB but he really needs to zero in on getting the kickoff return game fixed this year, starting with taking a knee when our guys catch it in the endzone, and improving STs play across the board. I like Stroman at PR. I liked Greene returning kickoffs in the Military Bowl, and I read that Travon might be a KR this year, which I'd like to see. But we need to get some swagger back with our STs, and I'd like to see our guys get back to blocking field goals and punts again. Maybe Reavis will be our ST spark this year...Not sure if Bucky on P&J team, but he probably should be?

Teams have developed new strategies specifically to stop Beamerball. Pretty sure the shield punt formation was created because of CFB.
The starting field position also has a lot to do with short drives (read as: 3 and out) from the offense. Hopefully with the line coming together that will improve this season.
Your point about taking a kneel is spot on though. Nothing wrong with starting at the 25 and saving a hit if you're deep in your endzone. Be smart should be the ST motto

I'm also pretty sure I've never seen any team have as many punts downed inside the 5 as we have over the last 2 seasons. We couldn't get a friendly bounce ever.

I thought it looked a lot better at the Spring game a few weeks ago...

@AMB4VT

Its time to bury these past performances, someone get me my shovel.

The Dude Abides

better drive a wooden stake through them and burn them first, need to make sure these don't ever come back.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.
