OT: Witcher 3

Did anyone pick the game up yesterday or plan on doing so today? I bought it for my Xbox One (my ps4 has been getting all the love as of late) yesterday and I figure TKP has got to have some gamers amongst us, and this is pretty hot right now in the gaming community.

I'm still getting the hang of everything, as this is the first in the witcher series for me, but the first thing that I noticed was that I was thrown off by the games mechanics, the character feels almost... weightless at first (it's hard to describe, almost as if he's moving too fast). Now this might be attributed to me playing a crap ton of GTAV recently (which moves stiff and like you're walking in water), but it was pretty noticeable/bothersome for a while there. Now that I've put a few hours in and gotten used to it, it's somewhat tolerable. Other than that, I find the game quite enjoyable. I can see myself getting wrapped up in almost too many side quests and losing another 400 hours of my life (thank you Skyrim!)

The graphics are pretty good, although I do find them to be a little cartoony at times (similar to fable). But, my goodness, the cutscenes are freakin' gorgeous.

The combat and alchemy...well, it's still trial and error for me right now, but I'll get it down soon enough.

What are your guys/gals thoughts?

I expected to see this guy

Lol, not sure what I expected.

I see there aren't too many gamers here.

I'll ride this sinking ship with pride.

6 man like Lewwwww(is Witcher)

I loved Witcher 2. One of my favorite 360 games. HAve played through the first 2. As far as your "moving too fast" comment, Geralt is supposed to have reactions and speed/strength that far exceeds a normal person. The translation of that into a video game feels a little "off" at first for sure.

To answer your questions, if this is your first foray into the series, there is a good bit of learning curve. The Witcher games are hard. The mechanics take awhile to get used to in combat, but once you get the hang of them the fights are really satisfying (much more so IMO than Skyrim, which I also loved, but the combat was way too easy)

I plan to pick it up on a Gold sale at some point in the future. Right now I am still really enjoying Dragon Age: Inquisition and don't have the time to play it.

I literally only heard about the witcher series when I started hearing about witcher 3.

I've definitely got the hang of his movements down now. You're definitely right about the combat, IMO this is leagues above Skyrim in that regard.

I tried starting Dragon Age a few times since about Christmas and it just didn't catch my attention. I actually just traded it in. Coincidentally, my wife bought me The Witcher 3 for ps4 and it got here today (she's deployed, and tomorrow is our bday). So used store credit to buy a game guide and picked up the order 1886.

DA:I starts pretty slow until you realize you can leave the first zone pretty much whenever. It picks up exponentially from there.

The Witcher series you will find is probably one of the few games where the Mature rating does it justice. I found GTA V to be fun but pretty ridiculous. The Witcher has the mature themes and events down pat though, in a way that doesn't seem like its just trying to get teenage boys riled up.

Love video games. My son has been harassing me all week to get him the Witcher.
I think he is getting it tonight.

I'll get the Witcher 3 once I make my way through the Borderlands Handsome Collection. As someone who played Borderlands 1 but not 2 or the Pre-Sequel, there might not be a better deal in 'new' games.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I love the Witcher series, although I understand that the methodical combat isn't for everyone. In the other games it's almost required that you potion up before fights (give yourself poison immunity against a poisonous monster, or apply a flaming oil to your sword to kill a monster weak to fire, etc). Is that element still in the new one?

It certainly doesn't hurt to apply the right oils to weapons, have the right bombs available, the right potions available. I'm also certain that it will be necessary on the harder difficulty levels.

That being said, there are actually "trophies" for killing a Witcher contract enemy without the use of potions, oils, or signs.

I loved the other entries in the Witcher series (if you didn't really do PC gaming, it's no wonder you didn't hear about it), because they seem to have the most involved combat I've played. It's always had a learning curve that could throw some people off. This one is a little bit easier than the others (with a controller), but you could also master the combat and take on tougher foes that are way above your level.

I just got Nazi Zombies from the Sniper Elite series so, I'll be busy with that for a bit.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Another gripe: the controls while swimming under water are the worst. The absolute worst.

Yeah, knowing that you don't swim up or down based on your control stick, but based on the button you are pressing is kind of annoying. Chalk it up to this being the first Witcher game where you can actually swim. It's also the first where you can actually jump and climb up things that aren't ladders.

I played a little last night. I really like it so far. The game is gorgeous. I haven't played Witcher 2 so i am a little confused at some of the previous events. I do know some parts of the game you make choices based off of what happened in Witcher 2 and it opens different paths/quests in Witcher 3 so it might be helpful to read up a little on Witcher 2.

@VTimHokie85

I played the Witcher 2 first before playing the first one. It definitely vomited a ton of names/places/groups at you and had a LOT of political threads going on. Took awhile to catch up for sure.

That particular game had 2 very distinct paths through the middle part of the game. If you have a 360 laying around you can probably pick it up for a few bucks these days. I would say its worth the play through for sure, just for the story.

Yep. A character in Witcher 3 was asking me about what paths i took in Witcher 2. I was like uhhhhhhhh.... So I am thinking about reading up on Witcher 2 and then starting from the beginning again

@VTimHokie85

I was so confused for a bit. Eventually it hit me that they were making ties to the last game. I'm not likely to start over, so I just answered as bad ass as I felt necessary.

I would suggest watching the opening cutscene for Witcher 2 on Youtube. It is a badass scene (and one of the choices you make at the end of the game is deciding whether or not to kill the guy kicking ass)

If you are lucky enough they had witcher 2 available for free for xbox gold members.

I got it with the graphics card I purchased to finish off my new PC a couple months ago and it's been fun for the couple hours I have put in it so far. Definitely requires modern hardware to play at a decent fps at 1080p, though. There are some good YouTube recaps out there of the first two that will catch you up to speed if you're like me and knew to the series.

stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!

I keep trying to hold off on buying it yet because the new Destiny DLC just came out and I'm also still playing Battlefield Hardline. Your article (and all the comments) are making it harder and harder to not go impulse buy it after work.

Been playing this game for over a week now and I really like it. The scope of the game is VERY large. I work 8-12 hour days so im lucky to get 1-2 hours during a week day, so i have to make it up on the weekends. It's probably an 80-100 hour game (?) just running thru the main story, but if you do all the side quests it is WAY longer (and i have been trying to do as many side quests as i can find). I thought it was just going to be a boring go to 'point A' kill someone/something or retrieve an item and return, but the stories even for the side quests get me hooked and make it very entertaining. For anyone currently playing i thought the 'Baron Quest' story was awesome and did not see the ending of that quest coming based on the choices i made. (i choose to free the tree spirit)

I recommend it as a must play, even if RPGs aren't a first choice of game for some. I hope i can finish it before the Batman game comes out but very unlikely

@VTimHokie85

I got to a certain point with the Baron quest, I followed Dea already, and then I started another side quest. But man, leading up until that point was so interesting! A lot deeper than I thought it would go!!

I'm currently doing tower of mice for keira.

Not going to lie, I had to dial down the difficulty a bit. Getting torn apart repeatedly was starting to take some of the fun away from me. I can't wait to come across some better armor and actually accumulate some money...

I'm helplessly addicted guys. My life is over. How's everyone else fairing??

Guess I shouldn't have picked this up for my kids, so much for getting them to do any work around the house.

I'll date myself further, life was so much simplier when all you had was pong and i'm not talking about the beer game.

I was once addicted to video games, get outside its nice today.

Stop it with the Negative Waves!

I get outside when I can, I've got two young kids and a deployed wife that see to that. But my nights...after studying and working out, are dedicated to Witcher. lol.
