For most of us Memorial Day is the start of the summer filled with burgers and beer. I wanted to take a quick second here to thank all of the veterans for their service to our country. VT obviously has a strong military presence so I'm sure there are a ton of you out there. You guys and girls have lost friends and family that sacrificed their lives so we could enjoy our freedom. For those active in the military stay safe thank you too. Thank you again for everything you've done for us.

(The following is just an observation, one taken from interacting with with current college students as I find myself back in college in my 30's.) many people confuse Memorial Day with Veterans Day, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for men and woman who have died while in the military usually during combat. Many groups and organizations have made the day about all veterans, all public servants or just about the beach and cook outs. While honoring veterans is always good, to lose sight of what the day is intended for in my mind starts to forget the sacrifice the ones who died made. Today should be a day of thanks and remberance for the million or so who died in service.
Edit: VTdru that wasn't directed at you just a place to rant after a long weekend of dealing with a large group of people here in Myrtle Beach who barely know today is a national holiday much less its meanings.
it's no problem, I know this is a hard day for people who've lost someone serving in the armed forces. I just wanted to thank everyone who is serving or served since I'm lucky enough to be celebrating my anniversary this weekend.
Agreed but this day is hard for us veterans too, especially those of us who lost many friends in the sandbox (and jungles for those older peeps)...
Thank you for the mention, but today is a day to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. If your in Blacksburg please go visit the War Memorial for me! Wish I could be there.
"Greater love has no one but this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." John 15:13
Thank you to those that sacrificed and God bless their families in remembrance.
Better words never spoken.
