Okay everyone. Joe and I have decided that since the men's basketball team has as much chance at making the tournament that my intramural team does, we figured that we'd ease the pain of another tech-less tournament.
So here's the deal: We're going to make a bracket of the best moments in Tech sports history. We want to take the 32 best moments, put them in a bracket and hash out who wins.
Y'alls job? Give us the moments. The criteria is yours. Does best signify most awesome play? (Tyrod to Coale, Deron Washington over Paulus) Most important to the program? (Vick and the '99 team taking the lead in the fourth quarter, Druckenmiller and co. beating Texas in '95).
It can be anything you want. You think someone winning the NCAA Championship in the hammer throw should get a seed? Don't be shy, put it on.
We will also determine seeding by looking at the comments and the +1's. The more +1's, the higher the seed, so even if you can't think of a moment, you can still impact the bracket.
So here we go...you are this bracket's RPI, Joe Lunardi and selection committee all rolled into one. Let's start the conversation.

Miracle in Morganton
Vick's last drive to get into field goal range for Shayne Graham's game winning kick as clock expired
http://youtu.be/Mm3nfLFTmaU
I was there
and it was awesome. Me and my VT BFF were in the middle of a huge throng of WVU fans, holding hands as only straight men at sporting events do. After the victory we inconspicuously left the stadium to the F-Yous and worse and went to Morgantown's finest restaurant, Applebees, and talked shit to Mountaineer fans the rest of the night.
A follow up great moments of this season was the trouncing of BC to confirm our place in the Sugar Bowl and the 3rd quarter of the Sugar Bowl.
Biggest Moment
Without this run and successful kick, we never go to the National Championship - by far the biggest thing we've done. Biggest Football Moment.
This happened my senior year, and it made our improbable run to an ACC Championship seem like more of a reality. Miss you Eddie and Randall.
Agreed
The entire 4th quarter was insane. With Georgia Tech up 17-7, Reggie Ball accidentally ran out of the back of his own end zone near the end of the 3rd quarter. Then something just switched on for Randall and the rest of the team, while GT looked as though we'd just mentally destroyed them.
25 points in the 4th quarter. 3 TDs in 4 1/2 minutes. Still have this game on DVD.
+1
we made the road trip down for this game. We were in the upper corner of the end zone going nuts when this happened, rally caps and all. it was outstanding. one of my favorite away game VT memories for sure.
Basketball '07
Basketball beating #1 UNC in Cassell in 2007
Love you Zabian.
This is Jeff Allen's #YOLO moment. I'm submitting it because, 1) #YOLO and 2) I wish Jeff Allen were still on this team to elbow and flip people off because it would make me feel better about myself while watching us get crushed every game.
Angela Tincher no hitting the US National team.
amazing...
This one for sure. In fact, it is probably the single most impressive performance by any Hokie ever. Tincher not only beat the best team in the WORLD, but she no hit them...I think only two balls made it out of the infield. I also believe that Team USA had never lost before. To put that in perspective, it would be like the VT basketball team beating the Dream Team by 50.
video
Rece Davis states around 2:30 into the video that not a single ball has reached the outfield. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIxN41iQM3I
On top of that I'm pretty sure they recently told her that she did not make the team.
Agreed, this one still amazes me. Team USA had won 3 consecutive Olympic gold medals and they were riding a 185 game winning streak going into this game. NO ONE gave the Hokies a chance, and Tincher absolutely dominated them.
09 Nebraska
Tyrod to Danny and Tyrod to Dyrell. (As one moment, of course)
This. I was there. It was EPIC!
me too
so epic...ill never forget how CRAZY the crowd went afterwards, my friend video taped the whole thing and it was SILENT when nebraskas last hail mary went up into the air and ERUPTED as soon as it touched the ground, so awesome
To begin:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvP5My9PH7s
One question, it can be an entire game right? Like the 09 Miami game was quite the moment for everyone.

ALL MAROON EVERYTHING. HOW ABOUT THAT.
Feb 26, 2011
The whole day was awesome. College gameday with big daddy. Cassell rocking. Malcolm's huge 3. Terrell bell's HUGE 3. PAUL DEBNAM GOING HAM. "Who's your daddy?". Storming the court. Greenberg and daughters. Upset city. Fuck dook
this was a top 5 day of my life
some quick thoughts....
Kinzer's Peach Bowl kick

2009 Nebraska Tyrod to Coale to Roberts
2010 ACC-CG Tyrod's brilliance (best QB'd game since Vick?)
Teabag Paulus!!
Deron Washington over Paulus was a moment I'll never forget. Also made for some great chants and props for the years after.
A longshot
2007 ACC Championship Game: Duane Brown blocks an extra point and Brandon Flowers takes it the other way for two points, shifting the entire game's momentum.
Second that, before I could get logging it is alread up!
Teabag Paulus!
ESPN Gameday against #1 Duke in 2011
And the subsequent upset in Cassell.
Coale!
Not really a "moment" but Danny Coale, being opened all day vs. FSU in the 2010 ACCCG. What other moment has sparked such great tag lines as "I'm gonna go Danny Coale a beer"?
PS: he is STILL open
Agreed
This game in some way should make the field. Beating FSU the way they did in a Championship game when FSU had previously owned the match up was big time. It could easily have been 3 W's in a row if they hadn't taken Tyrod out on the first play of the 2008 game
The 2007 Men's Soccer season. They made it to the College Cup (aka the Final Four of the Men's Soccer NCAA Championships) even though they started off the season unranked and a loss to VCU.
Patrick Nyarko packed the stadium every game
Add one more vote for
1999. Morgantown. The Drive and Shayne Graham.
Sorry no link
Wake Forest game in 2010, Tyrod pass to Logan Thomas for a TD. Pure awesomeness.
Also, that one full court shot against FSU in the 80s.
+1'd because that was some absurd ass shit.
I remember that one well - I was in high school and the next day the whole basketball team was trying to recreate it. Our best player actually hit one, and just like this one - with his opposite hand (Les Henson was a lefty).
Everyone called it The Henson Heave.

Shitty quality, but you can see the catch well enough
2005 Mens Basketball Win over
2004/2005 Mens Basketball Win over #5 Duke
and 2006/2007 Mens Basketball win over #1 UNC.....twice
2006/2007 Deron Washington Dunk over BC Center
as a side note. The dunk by Gordon at the 1:57 mark of the first video is probably the loudest ive heard Cassell. It was definatly an explosion of deafening noise.
Totally forgot that Jeff King and Bryan Randall doubled up on the basketball team.
That entire BC game was just absurd. Maybe not a "greatest-all time" but that was just so fun to watch.
Deron's Mom
I forgot that Deron Washington's mom got more air time than Sonya Curry.
2007 Football game at Georgia Tech. Sean Glennon beat GT in Atlanta wearing a Yellow Jackets jersey
I think Sean Glennon doing anything positive should be up there. Those moments were so rare.
Lower seed, but worthy.
One of the most physically impressive runs in pre-Logan VT history. 2009: Ryan Williams drags NC State's Earl Wolff 12 yards into the end zone
How did I forget about that? Fantastic!
How about Logan up the gut for the win against Miami on 4th down in 2011 (followed by Enter Sandman and Al Golden crapping his pants)? I know it's no Tyrod-Coale, but that was pretty fantastic.
Loudest I've ever heard Lane... That place was rocking!
so awesome
but still has nothing on tyrod to coale, i will never forget watching that ball hang in the air and just holding my breath... and the fact that the game and steiny's playcalling up to that point had been a shit show made it all the more glorifying... iunno about you but i felt somewhere deep in my gut that logan was going to lead a touchdown drive on that drive....just not quite in that fashion and tyrod to coale was just so unexpected and out of place...and so awesome
Best Crowd
What a great game - thankful for the comeback and possibly the BEST crowd ever at Lane. I'd never heard piped in music during the game before, much less Enter Sandman. Still smile thinking about it.
Probably a lower seed as well
But darren evans night against maryland
My cousin, who is a Terp, came into town for that game. The walk back to Foxridge afterwards was fantastic.
hahaha twerps are the worst, my buddy and me (highly inebriated) were in sec 39 for that one right in the middle of of a bunch of red and white. long story short after i had held my friend back and told some twerp in front of us to chill out, i ended up threatening some 16 year old twerp behind us that i was gonna throw him off the side of the stadium and fuck his sister.
chris fowlers reaction is priceless

first play: Sean Glennon throws an interception smh
Sean Glennon in 2007 & 2008
First Pass Attempt of 2007:
1st and 10 at VT 36 Sean Glennon pass intercepted by Quentin Cotton at the VTech 49, returned for no gain to the VTech 49.
First Pass Attempt of 2008:
2nd and 9 at ECU 19 Sean Glennon pass intercepted by Quentin Cotton at the ECaro 9, returned for 1 yard to the ECaro 19, East Carolina penalty 5 yard illegal block accepted.
sigh...
Yet
Sean Glennon is VT's career leader in completion percentage (min 500 attempts). Not once did TT beat him in passer efficiency head to head (TT did have two better years after SG left). By the numbers he is one of the top 10 QBs all time at Tech.
What he didn't have was great scrambling ability once the inevitable breakdown of protection happened. He probably should have thrown away more passes to avoid sacks (and fumbles).
I don't think that's a fair comparison, since TT was a true freshman/sophomore and Glennon was a rs-Jr/Sr. TT as a senior may have been the best QB ever to play for Tech (yes, I'm including a r-Fr. Vick here). To be fair to Glennon, he was a lot better than I think he got credit for. He just wasn't in a system designed for a pocket passer.
Lee Corso's car getting hit by lightning
No other comment.
Such a good quote by Corso...have the shirt
I was there hiding under the bleachers waiting for that crazy rain to stop.
Jeez, this one needs more pluses!

SLEEPER
2004 Maryland game (wish I had a clip) - Jared Develli kicks off and during Maryland's return, a Maryland defender is just GUNNING for him, running full-out. Develli (6' 1", 243) reacts by backpedalling a step, catching the defender, and throwing him OVER his head as he falls backwards. Develli is flagged for a PF or roughness (can't remember), announcers were chuckling at the call. Just a bad-ass moment by a VT kicker.
that game lives on as an inside joke in my house because of ralph friedgen's interview at halftime. the twerps were down big time at half and they asked ralph why he took a timeout before we kicked a fg as the 1st half expired. his answer before he ran into the lockeroom, "i was trying to keep points off the board. i mean shit!" tirico said, "coach friedgen forgetting his manners a little bit."
At Clemson in 2007, midway through the second quarter...
Clemson finally scores a field goal to get on the board, they kickoff to Sandstorm playing over the PA, the Clemson fans around me and my Hokie Crew were all excited... and then boom, Macho Harris with the 100+ yard kickoff return. The sweet sound of silence.
I was in Death Valley for
I was in Death Valley for this game, that victory was so very, very sweet.
I remember that game very well. It was Beamer Ball at its finest.
Macho was completely gassed after that run and had to help himself to an oxygen tank.
Finally beating FSU in 2007 after a long drought against them.
Doing the Tomahawk Taunt back at them was priceless.
It's called the Mock Chop. And there are lyrics.
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK THE SEMINOLES!
SEMINOOOOOOOOOOOOOLES FUCK ANIMALS!
huh
at 2010 ACCCG I could've sworn it was ...
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK THE SEMINOLES
THEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEYY SUCK GENITALS
You're both half right
FUUUUUCK THE CRIMI-NOLES
THEEEY FUCK ANIMALS
HOOOOOMOSEXUALS
THEEEEEY SUCK GENITALS
One of my friend's Dad did that all the way down the ramp leaving the stadium.
62-0 Syracuse
To me, this game introduced Lane Stadium to the world.
As far as the North Endzone is concerned, VTuba is correct since the MVs were the ones that spread the chant during the 2010 ACC CG. In 4 years of chanting that, not once have I ever heard the version you are mentioning.
Oh right
Since the mock chop only goes back to 2010, right?
The MVs have been doing it that way for much longer. Those things get passed down. Don't get salty.
Pretty sure some of us were using the term "semen-holes" as well....
That one's pretty popular with the people I know whenever we talk about FSU. Never thought about using it with the Mock Chop
My top choice
would probably be Tyrod-Coale-Roberts vs. Nebraska, but some others that I would mention:
Some others that deserve to be mentioned:
Logan Thomas coming in cold against Miami as a r-freshman and hitting Coale for the first down on 3rd and 16:
http://youtu.be/atVNNR29GHA?t=24m38s
Jayron Hosley's 9 interceptions as sophomore, perhaps making special mention of the 3 against nc state
Logan Thomas' performance vs. Miami as a sophomore
RocK Carmichael intercepting Tevin Washington to put GT away.
Good to see LT3's non-garbage-time debut
I was going to add it if I hadn't seen it already, I was at that game (Miami's student section) and it was awesome. I remember seeing Tyrod coming out of the game and thinking to myself, well, this is a good time to call a run up the gut and punt, no need to do anything risky.
But, he definitely proved me wrong. Shut the students around me up, too, since they were giving me hell about Tyrod having to sit.
A couple more
Bruce Taylor tipping the ball to Jeron Gouveia-Winslow for a pick 6 in the 2010 ACC Championship game:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-bvK9CMEa4
The 2012 Defense holding Florida State (24th ranked rushing O) to -15 rushing yards
Ha, that JGW pick 6
JGW was having a rough year in 2010. It was the beginning of the ACCCG, and I left the stands for some strange reason, came back and saw we had 6 points. I asked my buddy how we scored, and he said JGW had a pick 6. I just looked at him and said "no, really, who scored?" I refused to believe him until I saw the replay.
two games come to mind
I will post them as two separate comments for +1 purposes:
Clemson Thursday night in 06. One of the best games I've ever been to.
the other
Beating cincy in Orange bowl to finish 08 season. It was our (and the ACC's) first bcs bowl win in a long time.
Moment from the game:
To this, I say - WTF IS A BEARCAT?!!
Dude...
We are Hokies. We can't talk about semi-made-up mascots. Especially when a bearcat is actually a real thing. A silly thing to choose as the mascot for an Ohio school, but a real animal nonetheless.
It's real & it's a Vday turn-on
They smell like popcorn, apparently
CARLOS DIXON!!!!!!!!
What about Carlos Dixon stealing the ball and dunking it FTW for Greenberg's first ACC win.

2007 at Clemson *1 punt
2007 at Clemson
*1 punt return for TD
*1 Kickoff return for TD
*1 Interception for TD
*Hard Hits all game
*Bud's defense shuts them down
*Young Tyrod does his thing
Not the top, but deserves to be on the list.
That game was the essence of Virginia Tech Football.
sigh
i miss this D :\
That, good sir, is what she said.
2006 Clemson at Home
The '06 Game - Home underdogs, held CJ Spiller and Co to practically nothing, we ran all over them.
Oh, and #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING
This game
probably had more highlight plays than any game I can remember. The defense played lights out, and special teams were truly special. Some of the hits by the DB's were bone crushing (and likely would draw flags under today's rules, unfortunately). One of my all time favorite full game performances.
Here's one:
dont forget this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9L16pxRHoW0
can we just include the whole game? so satisfying screaming and rubbing it into the face of the old hag in front of me
I could watch the full speed hit on loop for hours...so sick!!
That's been uva's best LB for the last few seasons, too!
Sometimes when I'm sad, I'll watch this over and over until I'm not sad anymore.
2003 vs Miami D'angelo Hall Strip TD
#AllMaroonEverything
Shouldn't make the bracket
But honorable mention, because its great effort from a walk-on, Trey Gresh making the tackle to prevent the return for 2 points on the blocked XP vs. Marshall:

#BeatBama
I'm gonna toss the 2010 NC State game into the mix. The comeback that Tyrod made against Russell Wilson was one of the better moments I've seen in my time here.
All sparked by Wilson's kickoff return coming out of halftime. Great game.
Beating UVA. Nov 27, 2004 - Present.
high seed
December 22, 1986. Beamer is hired.
What about that that pic 6 to seal a win against UVA in '95 (I think)? Long before my time, but worth mentioning.
Have a video
Caleb Hurd for Heisman
Does anyone else remember Caleb Hurd for Heisman campaign?
http://thorsanchez.users2.50megs.com/Hurd/caleb.htm
He was the kick holder for Shayne Graham in 1999.
"98% of the time when he touches the ball he scores."
- Coach Frank Beamer, on Caleb
Ladies and Gentlemen, Tyrod Taylor.
Also, I think the day we announced the additions of Grimes, Loeffler and Moorehead should be up there.
Not yet
I'm all for having the day we got rid of Stinespring, but lets wait till the new coaches actually coach some games before we hail their hire as one of our greatest moments.
Logan Thomas giving out punishments
Cody Grimm vs. NC State (2009)
Cody Grimm forces 3 fumbles in NC State's first four plays
This video has the first 2:
Gonna need 64 moments for this bracket! May I suggest The Stick It In Region for one of the regions haha
I recommend the Stick it In, Commonwealth Cup, Thursday Night, and LOLUVA regions.
How about...
Stick it In Region - Any TD
Commonwealth Cup/LOLUVA Region- Any play against UVA
Thursday Night Region- Any Thursday night game
Beamberball/Lunchpail Region- Any Beamerball Play
I feel like that covers any/every play?
Tyrod to Dyrell in the
Tyrod to Roberts in the Nebraska game would be a sure #1 in the Stick it In Region
Omission
You've left out every sport but football. While football is gonna be the majority of these, there are some damn great moments from the other teams.
Idea
Replace the Thursday night category with other sports? I feel like a lot of Thursday clips could probably be cross-category, so that would be the most likely candidate to replace with Other Sports Awesome moments
Alternate Name for Other Sports: Real Hokies of Genius bracket
HI SCOTT.
Also, I second that motion. IARS: Real Hokies of Genius was hilarious.
Beamerball/Hokie Shake
Beamerball region even has a mascot
Short list, some of which was already covered...
1. D Hall strip of roscoe parrish
2. 62-0 over Syracuse as redemption for the McNabb game and because FUCK CUSE. You kids who weren't around for the big east days will learn this.
3. The BC game to seal the trip to the Nat Champ game
4. Painting the T on UVAs field and then whooping their ass
5. 38-0, possibly the happiest I've ever been after a football game
6. Darren Evans trucking that Terp
Nyarko and the trip to the soccer final four was pretty sweet, too.
Two deep cuts......
Grant Noel coming off the bench to throw a 7 yard touchdown to E. Wilford in 2002 versus # 1 Miami.....was proud to see the him get one off of the bench...
Travis Jackson sinking the 3 to beat Marquette and win the 1995 NIT championship for the Hokies......what a great 'team.'
Also, Logan Thomas obliterating some player from LOLUVA during 38-0
The moment that launched the program, Torrian Gray's blocked field goal against Indiana in the 93 Independance Bowl.
There has to be a Cornell Brown moment on the list.
The Cornell moment is easy...
"NO TWEEDY, IT'S WHIP!"
literally the only clip i found on youtube
really? nobody?
Bud Foster. Enough said.
#1 seed suggestions: 1999-
#1 seed suggestions:
1999- Vick brings us back against WVU
Drunkenmiller gets us past Texas
1995 over UVA on the road
Tyrod to Coale
LT gets us past Miami in 2012
Lower seeds:
Ryan Williams 85 yarder against Miami in 2010
Ryan Williams dragging the NC State defender
2013 vs GT with the first OT win in Lane
2007 Clemson game with the hits from Flowers and great demo of beamerball
Tyrod to LT against GT
1993 Independence bowl- especially the blocked field goal return for TD at the end of the first half
Way back machine
Will Furrer to Vaughn Hebron vs WVU in 1990
This was a monster play in a big game at a time when VT didn't win a lot of games.
wow
what a catch, id never seen this before
This is the first time I have ever seen a clip of Will Furrer. Plus, I actually dig the uniform combo. Wow. That's right up there with the Tyrod-Danny Nebraska Dagger Catch.
And of course
The 14-10 victory over St. Albans - http://www.hokiesports.com/football/pastschedules.html?season=1892
DEAL WITH IT, ST ALBANS FANS!
1986 #1 Memphis State
Beating #1 Memphis State 74-72 on Bob Uecker mask night. Simply incredible! Best basketball game in the Cassell's history!
Great Crowd
I was there for this one. A great crowd in the days when we didn't always have great crowds. The days of Dell Curry sinking threes before there were threes - shooting from the Gobbler on the court before we had a Hokie Bird. And the seniors (if I remember correctly) coming back out to thank the crowd after the game. We don't have lots of basketball to talk about, don't forget this one.
A slight mixup
I think you've mixed up a couple things - the win against Memphis State in 1986 was against the #2 team. In 1983 we beat a Memphis State team that had just that night became ranked #1, 69-56.
I was sitting mid-court, front row for that one, greatest game I've ever seen.
That is all...
this
followed by 52-14
Couple votes in addition to Tincher's:
1. The victory over Texas in the Sugar Bowl - it is our biggest win ever and started the BCS bowl streak.
2. The defeat of #1 (or would have been #1) Memphis State in '85-86 - the loudest moment ever in Cassell.
3. Les Hinson's 90+ foot bucket against Florida State - was in the Guinness book for a while
Tech strangling LSU in 2002. One of the the bigger non-conference wins the program has had. Remember this Kevin Jones run? I was in NEZ for it and I knew we had a stud on our hands. Everyone in the bleachers gasped, then lost their shit when he cut it back.
riot
plus the spontaneous pep rally / riot downtown the night before. unauthorized Hokie bird appearance in the back of a pick up truck, people getting arrested, the whole 9 yards.
this was my freshman year, heard the commotion from my dorm and we wandered out there. it was a good way to start things off
I think
that was LSU's last OOC loss?
In a regular season OOC game yes. They've lost a couple bowl games since then too.
Tech's win over Miami in 2004 winning its first of many ACC titles. Here is the go ahead
I have to limit this...
to events I actually attended:
1980 basketball game vs. Louisville in Blacksburg (we lost, but I've still never heard Cassell louder)
1986 basketball beats Memphis
1995 Sugar Bowl win over Texas
1999 Syracuse game (the 62-0 win with Gameday in town for the first time)
1999 national title game, even though we lost
2000 game at ECU (had a great time & then went to the beach)
2001 punt block vs. Miami (never heard Lane louder)
2002 football beats LSU
2003 football beats Miami
2004 football beats UVa, restoring order to the universe
2005 football season-opening win at NC State (great crowd, great tailgate, great game)
2007 football beats Florida State
2007 basketball beats Duke at Cameron
2007 basketball beats UNC at the Dean Dome
2007 basketball runs UVa off the floor in Blacksburg
2009 football beats Nebraska (Tyrod with last-second heroics)
2009 football beats Miami (the rain in Lane falls mainly on the Canes)
2009 football stomps a mudhole in Tennessee's ass
2010 football beats NC State on the road (very satisfying come-from-behind win)
2010 football beats GT (Wilson KO return TD #2)
2010 football beats FSU in ACCCG
2011 football beats Miami
I'm sure I forgot a thing or two.
How about the Hurricane game
Against Texas A&M? I believe it was either '02 or '03? We beat ranked Marshall, LSU, and A&M in out of conference games that year (and they were all at home - had no idea how good I had it as a student). I can't remember if it was my Sophomore year or Freshman. But being in the stands during a legit hurricane, and watching us walk on a team from Texas... if there are going to be 64 seeds, this has to be one of them.
It was both years
LSU and Marshall were 2002.
The Texas A&M game was played during Hurricane Isabel in 2003, my freshman year of high school... we were sitting in the kitchen without power, listening to it on an old battery-powered boom box on 96X because AM790's antenna blew down in the storm.
Also, TAMU was not ranked, and that was the first of 8 losses for them that year. But hearing Mike and Bill describe the "accidental on-side kick" that was a regular kickoff that blew back up-field, that was awesome.
Thanks for Clarifying
I was confusing two items, but we did beat ranked LSU, Marshall, and A&M all in one season... '02. My confusion was that in '02 we were AT A&M, and it was '03 that we beat them at home in a hurricane. So I combined the great OOC performance ('02) with the hurricane game ('03). Either way, man. I love football.
Virginia Tech Wrestling
In 2011 #12 ranked Virginia Tech Wrestling burst onto the national scence with a 2nd place finish at the National Duals. They upset the #2 Oklahoma Sooners in the quarterfinals, a win Kevin Dresser called, βBy far the biggest win for the Virginia Tech program.β They then went on to beat #4 Wisconsin in the semi-finals to advance to the Championship match where they fell to #1 Cornell.
This definitely put Virginia Tech Wrestling on the map.
VT Wrestling
Can't count out this year, which isn't even finished. 5 wrestlers that have been ranked throughout the year, 8-3 against top 25, won The Midlands and Virginia Duals, won the ACC and has all ten wrestlers qualify for the NCAAs with a chance for a national champion or two and multiple All-Americans.
If we're talking big moments for VT Athletics
I have to think getting in the Big East and then the ACC were huge for all our sports and deserves mentioning as a great moment in our history.
1990 uva game
ancient times. due to the status of the program .. no bowl that yr even if VT beat uva to go 6-5.
I was a h.s. sr, still undecided. my first visit.
a night game in lane on espn vs uva ... who at 1 point was no. 1 that season.
a dominating ground game led by vaughn hebron. vt's wt6 shut down terry kirby .. good lawds herman moore was a beast tho. this was the beamer, i've arrived in state game. history for sure, even if it took 3 more yrs to start the bowl streak.
lane was rocking and foreshadowed what it would be 5 or so yrs later.
I still think I have a splinter in my ass from those wooden bleachers.
I became a hokie .. unofficially that night. had to wait a few weeks longer for written word.
38-13
My Freshman year....
Terrordome anyone?
David Wilson 90 Yard TD return vs GT. Paul Johnsons look alone almost warrants its own moment
the guy next to me said, "we're gonna run it back." i said, " we aint runnin shit back man, we're gonna lose this shit in ot."
i was wrong
62-0 Syracuse
This game introduced Lane Stadium to the world.
It's not high on the list
but what about the Thursday night game against Texas A&M in the middle of a hurricane?
Eric Green
Or how about Eric Green's season this year? Lead the nation in scoring and was our first ACC Player of the Year.
This should be a one seed. I haven't been happier to see a Tech player succeed. He worked hard to get his due, well done Erick!
Beamerball Strikes again
Remember when we used to block punts??
I was there, forgot about that one!
'11 Orange Bowl
Tyrod scramble to a diving David Wilson for the TD. The only bright spot in that game. A highlight reel play for both of them.
Also, David Wilson being David Wilson. Backflips, catching rabbits, climbing Cassell, and eating Chick-fil-a on Sundays.
Wayne Ward DEMOLISHING
I remember watching this live and not even realizing that A.Davis scored.
it's even sweeter that it was against WVU
Wayne Ward!!!!!!
I was going to post this if no one else had. I don't think anybody realized Davis had scored until Skipper went off. At least nobody in my section. We were all too busy celebrating the hit.
Brandon Flowers brings the Boom
Not sure it's a best all time, but this is still one of my favorite hits from one of my favorite Hokies:
Or the one on FSU QB Drew Weatherford!!!
was that the one where he got knocked out? that hit was INSANE...cant quite remember who laid it down though
yes. When the FSU qb got up he started walking to the wrong sideline.
"cant remember who laid it down"
It was B.Flowers
commentary
Who are the two commentators on this game? Anyone know who that is?
Erick Green winning ACC player of the year
Not exactly a moment but...
Lee Suggs scoring a touchdown in 27 consecutive games (more than two seasons). Still the national record.
Colin v. UVA
Not really a moment for us, but it's anti-UVA. Colin Cowherd's UVA rant:
Ugh
"VAAAAAAH TECH!"
Definitely an outside the box thinking here. LOVE this rant. I listen every year before LOLUVA game
VT-Maryland BBall
VT-Maryland Basketball in '07... the ice game! Students were let in free (without a ticket) because of an ice storm in SW Virginia. The game went to OT and ended in a Hokie victory. Place was CRAZY... packed with students who stood the whole game.
http://youtu.be/l5ZCUw20JMQ
That was Vasquez's freshman year at UMD and we got so into his head that game it was ridiculous. He just went ice cold when shooting toward the student section.
Personal highlight since I first saw my wife at that game.
THIS!
what a great moment. Students EVERYWHERE in the stands. That game was fun to attend
Vick vs BC in 2000
Michael Vick running it all over BC in 2000. They put 8 in the box against him and he rips off this huge TD!

RVD Block
Ronnie VanDyke's 2-for-1 block during Kyshon Jarrett's 94 yd. punt return TD vs. Pitt.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZibWD1aybE
My personal list
1. Last drive against WVU in 99/ Shane's fg
2. Tyrod to Coale then Tyrod to Roberts Neb 09
3. Cory Moore's sack/strip/fumble recovery/ TD against Clemson 99
4. Tyrod 3-31 run FSU 07
5. Last drive against Miami 11
6. Deron t bagging Paulus
7. Beating #1 UNC
8. He said give it to me Roscoe, give it to me. Miami 03
9. Darren Evans trucking the UMD safety 08
10. tie 05 Uva and 11 Uva. Absolutely owning them on their field, doesn't get better.
i know most of these are obviously football highlights, but i don't want track and field to get overlooked. as everyone knows, alex ziegler won the weight throw at nationals, but don't overlook that we won ACCs in outdoor track, cross country, and indoor track consecutively. the triple crown. the cross country title this past year was the first ever for the program and if you were there, you would have been hard pressed to not get emotional when the results came back in and coach thomas went nuts.
plus, i might be biased but i think we should at least give an honorable mention to billdozervt. you guys may know him as that dude who makes videos and memes for our entertainment, but did you know that he is a sub-4:00 miler and multiple time ACC champion? maybe i'm the only one who gets hyped watching this, but it's a damn good race that came down to a couple hundredths of a second:
The Burg on the Richter Scale
Forgot about this one
I completely forgot about this one.
The shot of the north stands from the field gets me every time. Who wouldn't want to play in front of that.
umm, the thoroughbreds?
My favorite part of that...
Al Golden shitting himself
My sister and brother came to visit for that game. I remember during this Enter Sandman my brother turned to me pointing at the West Stands and said "Are those students too?". I said "Nope". And his face just went to shock and I heard him just go "Holy Shit." Gotta love Lane!
I get goosebumps every single time I see this clip. I love seeing the little kid jump along with everyone. The Force is strong with the little one.
Best Crowd
Still one of the best crowds ever - still get excited watching. And TV actually shot West Stands and I could pick myself out on replay.
ECU 2007
How the athletic department embraced the Hokie nation in such an emotional game
good one
That was a very big moment. Sad but also inspirational. I wish we played better.
That was a great moment. I tool my dad to that game. His 1st time at a VT game. Hard to believe that was 6 years ago. Go Hokies.
First time I have ever seen this clip. Loved how Lee Corso wore the T-shirt, but that whole experience got to be very gratifying to see.
Gotta put a plug in for
the #BeatBama moment of 1998, the Music City Bowl beatdown of the crimson tide, 38-7.
Also, Metro Conference highlights: the '82 basketball team's TWO defeats of a ranked Louisville team, and the '83 upset of #1 Memphis at Cassell.
How about the 'Vick Flip' into the endzone. Not to be confused with the 'Vick Flick'
One of my first games as a little Hokie
even though he messed up his ankle, it was pretty awesome.
Off the beaten path: Drew Weaver's 2008 performance (Golf)
First American to win the British Amateur in 28 years, following it up with an appearance in the Masters where he represented Tech well all week. I got a real kick out of seeing all the Orange and Maroon wandering around Augusta with him.
Virtually this entire video, but especially the two Wake Forest highlights starting here...
Wake went on to win the ACC that year but got absolutely mauled at home by an angry VT defense and a great showing by Sean Glennon (WUT). Brandon Flowers set the tone of the huge TFL on the first Wake play and then Chris Ellis met Riley Skinner in a dark alley and it wasn't pretty.
Also, absolutely agree on the pre-game moments before ECU 2007. The most cathartic experience of my life and one of my happiest moments as a Hokie.
I think the best highlight of that Wake game was Eddie Royal shedding defenders bigger than him on the way to the endzone. I believe Harper did has well, but little 5'10" Royal blasting through safeties made my day.
Roberts return against bama
this right here is just an amazing play! sorry guys i dont know how to get the video to embed here so you can just click it.

When
Just curious, but when will the bracket actually be made?
Deron's game winning layup at UVA
What a shot!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDdTgVZlYOI
Do we have enough here for a 128 "team" bracket??
How about the Hokiebird using the legdrop on the Syracuse Mascot ala Hogan.
Glorious
How have I never seen this?
Suck it Donovan Mcnabb.
technicalities
Technically, this was the year after McNabb and his pukey face had graduated.
I'm aware
But Matt Ryan graduating doesnt stop me from saying suck it Matt Ryan when we beat BC.
200th comment!!
That's amazing. Immediately forwarding to my Hokie friends.
The crazy thing about that clip is that with 3:58 left in the 3rd quarter, we went on to score 21 MORE points (I'm assuming thats 99)
Our last 14 points were on defensive TDs, the only times we scored in the 4th.
I think THIS is what I miss the most about our Big East days, the multitude of non-offensive scores...
Looking at the score, the first reaction is to think that Vick was having a field day out there, but his numbers are quite middle of the road. 8-16 passing for 135 yds and 6 yds rushing on 12 attempts. It was a total team effort.

Also, if you want to watch the full game, hokietapes has it up on YouTube:
This right here says it all...
TREADMILL HORSE!
and this...
cody grimm running down the guy from behind and stripping the ball. Thats VT football!
Greg Boone!
1:37ish watch that block hit by Greg Boone. I'm pretty sure he knocked him so hard that guy's shoe came off
Not only that
But Boone hurt his AC Joint on that hit, and struggled for part of the rest of the season... Huge hit.
This has prob already been said, but too many posts to sift through....
Need to add Cornell Brown committing to VT over UVA. Huge event for us at the time but even more so over the years in terms of what its lead to
I want to see a highlight of tackling machine Brett Warren and that nasty hit he laid on Heward-Bey in Lane Stadium. That was a nasty, nasty hit. I thought Warren would cut Heward-Bey in half.
Unfortunately, the new rules are going to hurt the defensive backs now because one tap, they could be ejected. Which is absolutely ridiculous.
WAT
guy at 0:56 makes my day
haha
I think the same thing every time I see mstrawther's enter sandman compilation
Bobby Steven's Buzzer Beater
I realize this was before many people's time, but Bobby Steven's buzzerbeater to win the NIT Championship (when the NIT was a big deal) in 1973 over Notre Dame has to be somewhere. Chosen by techhoops.com as the Greatest Moment in Tech Basketball history click here. For the story of the season, the team was also chosen as Greatest Team on techhoops.com, see theACC here. Worthy of consideration.
Absolutely - there were only like 25 teams that made the NCAA tourney back then, so the NIT was much more important. My dad is an alum, too, and he was very happy when this one happened.
1995 NIT champs
The 95 team deserves a mention.
1973 NIT
I just went back and looked at the bracket. We won 3 games by 1 point and one game by 2 points. That is crazy. The opposite of Seth Greenberg.
Vick's TD Run against Syracuse
That Vick run against Syracuse to ice the game should be considered. That play was one of many that showcased his unbelievable speed.
This
Michael Cole
Did we miss this one?
How about Tyrod to David Wilson in the Orange bowl against Stanford? Probably one of the best plays of that bowl season. (even though we got smacked)
Finding Imoh
How about Mike Imoh running for 250+ against UNC in 2004? I was sitting in the Rams Club cheering so hard that I was asked to leave by an Old Timer decked in baby blue. Probably one of my all time personal favorite backfield tandems was Imoh&Humes. They weren't flashy but got the job done. Couldn't find UNC game but I thought I'd add the Duo's highlights for your viewing pleasure
Enjoy
Probably my favorite game Humes played was when he was coming back from a broken arm (BC '04?) and played with a cast on, which he proceeded to use as a club against anyone trying to tackle him.
