Hokies' Basketball Coach Buzz Williams' Message to Team this Summer Remains #getBETTER

Virginia Tech men's basketball is doing work this summer too.

[Mark Umansky]

Most, if not all, of your attention paid to Virginia Tech athletics this summer will focus on the football team. And for good reason, the Hokies host the top-ranked and reigning national champion Ohio State Buckeyes on Labor Day Night. But if it slipped past your radar, Hokies basketball is also preparing for its upcoming season.

Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Buzz Williams shared a video of himself addressing the 2015-16 Buzzketball squad at the start of summer session I.

#getBETTER is still part of Buzz's message, and there's an emphasis on the players holding each other accountable. Buzz explained some of the philosophy behind that talk on his personal website. Buzz's entire post is worth the time to read, but the transparent coaching strategy excerpted below really struck me.

This time of the year, I am not allowed coach games and are limited with our practice time on the court with the guys, but what is it that I can do to '#getBETTER?' What can I read?...Who can I learn from? So I gave them a copy of my calendar over the past 5 months, which has all the details of each day, some of which involves our team, others that do not. I used that as a reference to explain that my vision was important to me, but how it was also connected to our vision as a program, and how/where I spend my time in the summer, will also be revealed in the winter. I detailed to them what I did, and where I went when they were home after the Spring semester, and why.

Buzz: So what's your plan to #getBETTER
Player: Well Coach, I am going to do some serious scouting on our competition for next year.
Buzz: Great! I love the passion. How do you accomplish that?
Player: By spending 8 - 10 hours per day all Summer to studying their players and offensive/defensive philosophies. Getting to know each player in depth.
Buzz: That's a tall order, son. I'm not sure I understand how you're going to get that done. You mean you're going to be studying film?
Player: I'll be watching the screen alright. Studying plays. Watching how the teams players move, defend and score. Researching their individual attributes. Even looking at the program's recruiting!
Buzz: Son... are you talking about video games?
Player: Not video "games" coach. Video "research"!

They're called "simulations."

Are those Zubaz?

I'd like to have those! Attention grabbers!

OK, this isn't my forte, but ....
this sweater???

Did he get a free bowl of soup with that?
All he needs is one of those jester hats and the people from the playing card company will be beating down his door.

A picture is worth a thousand words. A gif is worth a million.

Is it just me, or is his website screaming? it's not all caps, it's the font, but it makes my eyes bleed a little bit. that could be #getbetter'd.

So Bleachers - I Wanna Get Better will be Buzz's song of the summer?

Bleachers on Youtube

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

No "You better you better you bet". At least that is about sex!

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

I recognize lyrics from the who but I'm not sure what you meant here....

Clearly it is Musky's #1 song to play when getting it on. Not everyone likes Barry White...

Buzz is looking a bit ripped these days.

#getSWOLE

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

The Dude has no neck, you know he is a powerlifter! :)

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

This thread has really devolved, and not even from arguments. There are so many tangents that don't make any sense.

Oh yeah, well you're a tangent

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Just don't get hyperbolic.

"Exit light..."

Let's keep it parabolic around here.

Oh, great... now we've got a cotangent

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

just another day on TKP

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

This thread's really getting logarithmic.

He's no good to me dead.

I'll cosine that sentiment

And there's a lot of formulas being presented right now... Not sure how to show my work, but I do know the answer is 42.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I get that you guys are making jokes, but you're being obtuse to the people here who dont understand math.

"The Big Ten is always using excuses to cancel games with us. First Wisconsin. Then Wisconsin. After that, Wisconsin. The subsequent cancellation with Wisconsin comes to mind too. Now Penn State. What's next? Wisconsin?" -HorseOnATreadmill

All things being equilateral, that's a scalene hot take

At this point, everyone's posts are becoming extremely derivative.

"Exit light..."

Was this really integral to the conversation?

I thought it really got to the root of the issue

Onward and upward

Oh yeah, well you're a tangent

Your arguement reminds me of the old "clutch cargo" exchanges that Conan O'Brien would have with Arnold Schwarzenegger:
