Stacy Searels Returns to His Georgia Roots, Offers 2016 OT Patrick Kearns

Virginia Tech's offensive line coach made a trip back to his home state to get a closer look at a rising senior OT.

When Hokies offensive line coach Stacy Searels heard that an OT prospect was turning heads in Rome, Ga., he must've had flashbacks to his playing days.

As a native of Trion, Ga. Searels grew up just over 27 miles away from where rising senior Patrick Kearns takes the field these days. As the buzz around Kearns built over the past year, Searels quickly saw the opportunity to revisit some of his old stomping grounds and see a promising prospect in person all at the same time.

"Coach Searels messaged me on Twitter last week that he wanted to one of my practices and see me work out," Kearns said. "He came up Thursday (May 14), then I called him later that night and he offered me, so I guess he liked what he saw."

It would seem Searels has been able to leverage those common connections with Kearns, who's rated a 3-star prospect by the 247Sports Composite ranking, to make a quick impression on him.

"He's a great coach with a great track record, plus his hometown is close to where I live," Kearns said.

Word of Searels' heroism back in his days at Appalachian State, when he worked with some of his fellow coaches to save some of the team's support staff trapped in a van after an accident, also made its way to Kearns and clearly stuck out.

"I also heard about how he saved some guys during a car wreck when he was at Appalachian State, so he's clearly a good guy," Kearns said.

Even though the Hokies are hardly a local program for Kearns, he says his impressions of the program are equally favorable at this point.

"They play great football there, Coach Beamer is one of the best," Kearns said.

But for all his interest in the Hokies, the staff wasn't reciprocating until only recently. Kearns attributes some of that change to a sudden growth spurt — a sure feature of any Division I success story.

"There was a dramatic shift in my weight from last year, and that probably had a lot to do with how my recruiting's picked up," Kearns said. "I went from about 235 pounds last year to 270, 275 now and stayed just as mobile."

Combine that weight with his 6'5" frame, and it's no shock that Kearns is suddenly hearing from coaches across the country.

"Coaches always tell me that they like the way I run, but at the same time, they say you can't coach size," Kearns said.

The Hokies are hardly the only team to offer Kearns in recent weeks. Scholarship pledges from teams like Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Indiana, Cal, Florida and N.C. State have all come rolling in for Kearns in May and June alone.

With the recent whirlwind of attention, Kearns is trying to do some research on each program in person before making any kind of decision.

"I went to set visits with all the schools that have offered me," Kearns said. "Then after those visits, I can hopefully commit sometime before my season starts in August. I just want to approach my senior focused on football and build a relationship with my school's coaching staff."

Kearns says that he's "pretty sure" Virginia Tech is among the programs he'll be visiting this summer, and adds that he's currently working with the staff to set a concrete date now.

Once he stops by campus, he's hoping the coaches can help Blacksburg feel more like Rome.

"I definitely want good academics, but I really want a place to feel at home, that makes me feel comfortable," Kearns said.

With Searels on hand to regale him with stories from the Peach State, the Hokies are hoping they have just the right ingredients to make Kearns feel welcome.

Sounds fairly promising for us and looks like he would be a solid get.

40 lbs in one year? That is some beef, but he looks a little too nice. Need to see his warface...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

He did not play nice in the clips.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Searels is really impressing me. Looks to be a great hire. Thanks, Mack Brown, for the recommendation.

OL highlight vids are the best...some of those poor defenders should press charges for child abuse because I see a man abusing boys.

I LOVE this new found focus on the OL. It seems VT and the fans have finally realized the importance of a solid OL; definitely need to keep the momentum going.

I don't think VT, and certainly not the fans, didn't realize the importance of a solid OL. We just never landed them - blame whomever you want, but we tried, and failed. I'm just glad we're picking it back up.

Batman and robin - holy double negative batman

He's no good to me dead.

I'm not sure if you are saying we did or didn't realize the importance of a good o line so I can neither agree nor disagree, but I remember wistfully dreaming of the day we could have a competent o line ever since 2007 at least

Good thing you used a comma there or that might have been a run-on sentence...

;.)

I like the focus, too. And even more, I like that they're actually having some success in this area.

We've known about the importance of a good OL for a while now. Sean Glennon is Example 1A on what a bad OL will do to a good QB.

That's a whole lot a growth!

"Some people think football is a matter of life and death....... I assure you, it's MUCH more serious than that" ...Bill Shankly

That's what she said

Stacy Searels has a super-hero mentality the way he saved people's lives from car crash and rebuild the O-line. He made hokie nation forget about Grimes.

Who?

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

He was the OL coach in the mid 90s. Stiney replaced him. /s

I like how he engages with intent and stays engaged in the block. And how he keeps his feet moving. And his music choice.

Also, he now weighs 40 more pounds than he did in the highlights. He's gonna crush people this year.

Yeah, I agree with all that. Yeah, he does look a little nice for a big ugly, but let him get here, grow a monster beard and hang around Searles for a while, he'll get to looking mean, I'd bet on it.

I remember keying in watching Nosal in HS and had the same reaction - too nice. He played TE in HS and there were some plays where he got into position to destroy LBs as the play flowed to him.
LBs would be focussed on the backfield, then turn to chase the play laterally unaware of the roadblock waiting for them. Nosal could have buried some guys, but merely screened them off from making the plays with his hands. I respected him for that - good guy. Me, I would have killed the kid, helmet to the chest. But I'm petty, shallow and vindictive.

Anyway, a few years at VT, and Nosal morphs into a guy that plays with his fingertip gone.
No worries. These kids will come around.

A picture is worth a thousand words. A gif is worth a million.

More Taco Bell will do it. That food breeds meanness.

And indigestion

And sting ring.

Get Jake Grove back for a week to hang. The kid will major in History/Crime/Execution Methods. A sight I will never forget was during a wvu game. They had some guy on D playing with a forearm in a cast. After one play the camera showed Jake downfield after a block on the sideline getting up with his knee firmly implanted in arm in cast guy's chest. More O Line love it!

Does anyone know a GIF site here?

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

it's a shame. poor kid has poured everything into it. He was dealt a shitty hand at VT and he made the most of it. I would have liked to see him succeed but it's not looking promising :/

Onward and upward

Yeah, I've been one of the few saying that he should be a TE. Being a QB is more than just measurables. I was disappointed when he dismissed the possibility of switching positions to TE in the league. Maybe now he'll change his mind? It's his best chance to get on the field.

Arians drafted Thomas, saying that he was going to be at least a 2 year project (possibly a starter in year 3). I think he's going to be fine and will have at least another year in Arizona to prove himself.

Plus, no other team in the NFL is more focused on the 3rd string QB than the Cardinals, so Thomas is getting a lot of heat from fans/media that a 3rd string QB wouldn't normally have. All the attention is solely because they lost their 1st and 2nd string QBs just before the playoffs last year. For some reason they think it'll happen again and that the 3rd QB is a major priority this offseason.

Everyone is hopping on the "move him to TE" bandwagon because Arians wisely choose to play Lindley over Thomas in the first round of the playoff. It wasn't because he thought Lindley would perform better (I'm pretty sure he knew both wouldn't do well) but because that's not a situation you want to throw a rookie "developmental" QB in for their first start.

The author of the article used one quote from Arians, that was negative against Thomas, and ran with it to complete his piece, which is extremely opinionated. I'm sure if you find and listen to the whole interview, Arians' comments mostly would have been neutral for his opinions on Thomas because that's the way he's been in every interview for the past year regarding LT.

Bravo. You took the words right out of my mouth.

Lots of confirmation bias in that piece.

I'm sorry but, in a playoff game, you play whoever gives you the best chance to win. He's a paid, professional athlete. He's not some true-freshman, just arrived in college type. The reason that he didn't play last year is that according to Arian's comments leading up to the playoff game, he performed poorly and inconsistently in practice and Lindley beat him out for the 3rd string position. If Arian's really thought that LT3 gave the cardinals a better chance to win, he would've put him in instead of saving his fictional NFL redshirt. It was disappointing because Lindley was absolutely abysmal, so we can easily draw our own conclusions about those practices.

I want LT3 to succeed as much as you do. We just differ in that you think staying as a QB will give him a better chance, whereas I think him switching to TE will give him more of a opportunity for success.

Also, it's hypocritical that you make an argument for how unseasoned true freshman can perform better (in another thread about whether or not we should start Lawson as a true freshman or not) ... And yet, this same logic doesn't apply to LT3 somehow.

Here's the actual quote...Lindley didn't "beat" him out. By my read, it was more that Arrians felt the downside of failure would be much worse with Thomas. Lindley was the sacrificial lamb.

So why didn't Arians turn to rifle-armed rookie Logan Thomas, as originally planned entering the regular-season finale versus the 49ers?

Arians reiterated this week at the NFL Annual Meeting that Thomas simply wasn't ready to start games at the NFL level.

"We drafted him for two years from now, not November," Arians said, via the team's official website. "It just so happened his number got called (earlier.) I was not going to let him fail (in San Francisco) because once you fail those scars never go away.

"It's very hard to get the guys back in the locker room if you cost them the playoffs. I just wasn't going to put him in that situation. Right or wrong, it just was my decision."

Imagine if Logan could hit the broad side of a barn twice in a row. It seems Arians has. I've always wondered if his glasses are a little maroon colored though.

I'll bet Searels would have liked to have fattened Logan up (to somewhat stay on topic) and made him into an offensive tackle.

"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. " Rocky B.

Being a TE is more than just measurables...

Yeah, but there is a stronger correlation between being a TE and pure measurables, than QBs and pure measurables. Which is the more skilled position?

So what? Was my statement incorrect?

it was incomplete. thegadfly simply added more information.

Homerism aside, what a truly terrible article. He starts off with "As I've been predicting...", as if this whole thing is just a process to prove him right. Then takes one quote without any context and uses it as evidence without anyother details. The whole thing just comes off as vindictive. I've never heard of Fansided, so maybe it's just a crappy site that lets just anyone write whatever they want, but even given the low standards for internet journalism...this is embarrassing. And it's owned by Sports Illustrated? sheesh

Look what you've done, posting a Logan-related thing on an article about an OL recruit.

Now we'll have 200+ posts on this thread and 15 of them will be on topic. Shame on you!

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Brings up a good point. One functionality that TKP is missing that vBulletin has is the ability to move off topic comments to more appropriate threads. I know going gloriously off topic is kind of a TKP calling card, but I think that's more to do with the functionality of the site (or lack thereof) than anything special or unique about this site. And honestly, it makes things hard to follow sometimes, especially for readers who aren't on here every day. (Unlike myself.) Giving VTGuitarMan the ability to scoop up these LT related comments and dump them into an LT thread would help keep comments on topic.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

No way. 100% disagree. A) who wants to have that job? I am sure VTGuitarman is busy enough with his day job of collecting virtual turkey legs and his night job of policing said virtual turkey legs to have any other time to edit threads into previous or new threads. B) Even though some topics do have some Squirrel issues most off-topic discussion are pretty fun. As you say a unique calling card. I wouldn't want that to change because honestly there is no way I am going to keep up with the number of threads if every OT tangent gets scooped up into previous of new threads to make them relevant to the Post at hand. and finally, C) Joe already added the collapsable window function. I use it all the time. It saves you from the white noise if you don't want to read it while giving you the option to get into it later.

Hear, hear! I love those collapsing threads, and love collapsing arguments over stupid shit.

Yeah. Shit, what a stupid idea. What bozo suggested that?

Now let's see if LT's new girlfriend sticks around...it will be telling!?

Fate is a strange thing.

I remember when Bucky was being recruited and hailed as a LT clone at QB. Bucky, unlike LT, gets the shot at TE, and now the sky is the limit for him.

I hope somehow, someway, LT can get a shot at TE and make some cake in the NFL for a few years. He is a good man for what he did for VT. Life just isn't fair like that, but maybe just once...

A picture is worth a thousand words. A gif is worth a million.

...the sky is the limit for him.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

So at the risk of going farther down the rabbit hole with the LT talk.

Why do so many people think LT is such a great TE? He played QB in high school leading his team to the state playoffs. Could he play TE probably, he is a tall strong athlete, but why do so many think he will just become this great TE?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.
