Virginia Tech's game at Purdue on 9/19/15 is scheduled for 3:30 PM

I was 99.9999% sure this would be a nooner.

Going to be honest - I didn't even realize we were playing Purdue this year. I guess I've just got tunnel vision for the opener and assumed the other three OOCs were ECU and two scrubs.

It was a catch

Exactly. Its B1G team, but I am thinking I will be able to pick up tickets on StubHub for about $5. Second row 45 yd line visitors side wants $150 right now. HA! I will have to buy these before the OSU game though, because once we win the prices will rise.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Your assumption is still accurate even after learning that we're playing Purdue.

@historyhokie.bsky.social

even better! I was planning on driving up that day for the game, this will give me some tailgate time before kickoff rather than heading straight to the stadium.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Purdue stinks, so why does this game concern me?

because VT can play as good or bad as anyone in the country, depending on the day/half of football. recent examples of losing horrific games escape me, but i'm sure it's happened.

I am pleasantly shocked. The wife and I can leave the house later than oh dark thirty and still have some time to check out the town before kickoff.

Didn't Purdue's QB just announce that he was transferring?

More QBs transferring these days than UVA something something Spring Game.

Purdue? More like Purdont amirite?
PSU coworker who happens to be married to a Purdue alum tells me everyone in B1G country calls them that.

Over last two seasons, number of home games that were nooners (counting 12:30 and 1:30)

Purdue: 12 of 14 (Michigan State and Notre Dame were not)
VT: 9 of 13

Man, they have it worse than us. But then again, they are a combined 4-20 over those two years.

They don't have lights at their stadium so they got the games in early, especially late in the season.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

Lol is that true?

Indeed it is. Purdue has been talking about installing them for a while, but they haven't.

"Exit light..."

some anOSU fans in our section were telling us that last year was their first year with proper lights at their stadium. Apparently, before then, they had to truck in lights and cranes and string them up that way for night games. I imagine that was pretty unattractive and I'm sure they're happy to have actual lights now. I will say, though, that even though they had lights it seemed really dark in the stadium to me. Granted, I was in the middle of the 'shoe' part and pretty high up.

Onward and upward

Nah, for years we just didn't play night games. I preferred the 3:30 kickoff because you could sleep in after Friday's parties and still hit the bars after the end of the game; plus Columbus gets cold at night in November.

I didn't realize yo guys play Purdon't this year.

Knowledge is Good - Emil Faber

I guess I never realized what a luxury lights are until recently, really the Michigan Notre Dame a few years ago. I'm guessing being in the Big East, night games were needed for TV time.

Purdon't is a home and home, somehow we don't play them here until 2023, there were scheduled during the Curtis Painter qb years when things weren't so lean in Indiana

Out of curiosity, I assume that Purdue is in the eastern time zone?

Not only that, but these days, the pictures seem to take longer than the wedding and reception combined. Set the DVR, forbid discussion by those who may hear a score, and watch it that evening. It's not like you'll have anything else to do, right?

Is Purdue run on EST or CST? I'm looking at the map and it looks close as there is on part of Indiana that is absorbed into CST. Did someone say they don't have lights at their stadium? Do you even football bro?

-Semper Primus

See above. All games are EST. Even if they were central, it would start 2:30 central, 3:30 EST.

He's no good to me dead.

Okay, now the important questions.

  1. Who is going?
  2. Who wants to get a tailgate together?

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

OOOH! OOOH! ME! ME! I am going. Still trying to figure out the cheapest way to get tickets. Talking with Purdue people it sounds like scalping before the game or waiting them out on Stubhub is the way to go. Their attendance does not sound like it will support high ticket prices.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Alright guys and gals, legitimate question here.

At what age would you say it's appropriate to start taking children to sporting events? Granted, I know every child isn't the same behavioral wise, but if you had to pick an age...

My wife is currently deployed and I badly want to go to this game. Flying out of rapid city is far too expensive, and driving to Virginia with my 3 & 4 year old boys is suicide. (27 hour drive...Also, r.i.p my hopes of going to the osu game this year) The purdue game is only 14 hours away, which seems manageable (7 hours a day, 2-3 stops, easy)

Does anyone here have any experience with taking youngins to games?

Edit - thoughts are kind of all over the place. I'm choosing this game because it's the closest to me.

No family around from either of us to babysit. My fam is in Va, hers is in Seattle. Fun times.

I'm gonna go ahead and say it: it probably won't be worth it for you to go to the Purdue game. Maybe if it was a couple years down the road, it could be the beginning of a really cool tradition with your sons, but at this point I can't see it going well, no matter the temperament of the kids/you.

I live two blocks from campus in Blacksburg and only get a chance to go to a couple games a year. When I can get an extra ticket I take my son. His first game was UNC when he was two and change. He lasted about a quarter. A friend took him to play on the concourse for the second quarter and we hit his naptime at halftime and I biked him home. Good experience overall. He's been to a couple spring games and that has gone well. So it's really not an age thing, but more like a convenience thing. If it goes south, I can abort the mission pretty easily and it's not the end of the world. No way I'd drive 14 hours with two of him for a game like Purdue. Prolly end up hating my kids and being pissed the whole time. My two, fairly disjointed, cents.

My kid turns 3 on the day of the ECU game. I'm not even thinking about taking him to a game until we're past the diapers and regular nap stage. Heck, first I'm gonna need him to just sit and at least pretend to be interested for at least a quarter on TV.

And even then, his first game at Lane will most likely be one of the FCS games, where it's much easier to abort mission.

My first game was when I was less than a year old. Of course back in those days you could leave the stadium and re-enter so it was a little easier for my parents.

I guess it depends. I've taken my oldest, who is now 9, to a game when he was 18 months. We lucked out though cause we were sitting with a bunch of buddies of mine from school and one them held him the entire time because he was trying to score points with the girl next to him. My boy was pretty good during the game though. The next one we went to was when he was 3 or so and just so happened to have a couple sitting in front of us that had a 3 year old with them as well so they just played right there in the south stands.

But now I have multiple, 4 boys, and it really couldn't imagine taking them to a game as I think they'd get too bored watching a game for three hours or so.

I have three and a half year old twins, and just recently tried to take them to their first MLB game for Mother's Day. They lasted about three innings before they'd had enough of the experience, which was fine, but I know they wouldn't make it through a VT game. My suggestion would be to wait a few more years until their attention span and ability to sit has gotten better.

My plan with my two is to try taking them to a local high school football game or two this fall just to see how they do and to get them interested in watching football in person. I figure once they can make it through that, then I can start shelling out the money for college and pro games.

"Lunch has been cancelled today due to a lack of hustle...deal with it."

MLB for mother's day? Was hooters undergoing renovations?

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Believe it or not it was actually her choice. We just moved to Colorado last year and she wanted to see a Rockies game. Having said that, she also received several other gifts throughout the day to keep it balanced (I'm not a total savage after all).

"Lunch has been cancelled today due to a lack of hustle...deal with it."

What would be a better gift to mom than a card and free time to do whatever she wants. Take the kids to the game and she gets some peace and quiet to herself. I can think of a few stressed out moms that this would be gold to.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

I went to my first game at Lane when I was 2 months old. My daughter didn't go to her first game until she was 11 months, but that was the Sugar Bowl win versus Texas so she enjoyed it.

I used to frequent gobblecountry... And thenorthendzone.com until I found thekeyplay.

To be fair, it's originally from an SB Nation article, of which Gobbler Country is the Hokie site.

Y'know I had not realized that. Even after going back to their page to investigate after reading your comment, theres nothing there that screams SB Nation. Its a poorly designed site

EDIT: I missed the "View original" link at the end of the article. Now I see the SB Nation material

"The Big Ten is always using excuses to cancel games with us. First Wisconsin. Then Wisconsin. After that, Wisconsin. The subsequent cancellation with Wisconsin comes to mind too. Now Penn State. What's next? Wisconsin?" -HorseOnATreadmill

I thoroughly enjoyed that article. It included such gems as:

"Virginia Tech went to Ohio State on September 6th and won 35-21, earning the same number of victories over the Buckeyes that the entire Big Ten has over them since Urban Meyer took over.", and

"Virginia Tech beat the National Champions by double digits in their home stadium at night, then lost a game essentially decided by penalty kicks because both offenses were too horrid to score actual touchdowns [Wake Forest]"

Painful, but true.

It was a good read and enjoyed some of their humor. However it seems that they believe our offense will be the same as last year. Obviously they haven't paid attention to our offseason or spring game or the likes but I think we will see a big improvement on the offensive side of the ball for the Hokies. If we don't see a definite improvement I think all of us including the coaches will be severely disappointed. This is obviously a complete thread on its own, but I'm ready for the season and weekly debates on the upcoming games.

Like most preseason analysis and predictions, it's much more a half-informed review of last season's team than this season's...

True, but it's as good as any, and interesting enough to read.

As far as preseason previews that I've seen it was pretty good and fair. None of the pot shots that I've seen from other stuff (For example this OSU preview).

If the analysis of a college football team talks about the offense as a weak point and doesn't even note that every single point was scored by an underclassman last year and 80+% of all the points were scored by Frosh, it's missing a very big part of the story.

Yeah, although they could have noted the lack of performance last year and rightfully so, to ignore the ability to improve over the spring with the QB now having a full off-season in the system and the vast majority of point scorers returning and being better as well is a little bit of a weak piece in terms of how you think you'll do against our defense. Saying if they continue on their play of last season then yes, but if they are improved blah blah blah is better. It's like maybe 2-3 more sentences which would be a more accurate description.

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

I liked this quote about Hodges:

Look for him to be the next TE that Purdue refuses to cover on third and long or in the red zone.

It's always nice to be reminded that we're not the only fans with angst about our team.

Believe me, they have much more reason for angst. There's a Purdue grad in my program, and she has given me the impression that everything wrong about VT football is essentially magnified 300% at Purdue. They have an aging AD who is terrible when it comes to connecting with fans and thinks night games are the worst thing ever (that's why he refuses to out lights in the stadium - some older big donors like the nooners). They had a decent run (a couple years, if memory serves) and then a decline. Not a 7-6 or 8-5 decline, we're talking scraping the bottom of the FBS barrel decline. Honestly, I feel kinda bad for the fans, because they don't even have a Whit to give them some light at the end of the tunnel in terms of fan experience. That said, I really hope we thrash em this fall.

@VTimHokie85

F**k Purdue.

Seriously, I hope we destroy them. I hope our team comes out with such a fire lit under them that it makes every boiler-whatsit at that game to explode bigger than the Sultana (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sultana_(steamboat)).

EDIT: I can spell, I swear

Seriously, I hope we destroy them

agree with you, but then again this is pretty much my feeling about everyone we play

There has GOT to be a story behind your ferocity and I want to read it (it IS the offseason, after all)

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

$5 bucks says there's an ex girlfriend in the story.

Just got the tickets I purchased through the Hokie Club and I am pissed. Corner end zone, 4 rows from the top. I normally would watch the game on TV rather than sit in these types of seats. No refunds, no exchanges. A whole lot of good being in the Hokie Club did me.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

What did you expect? Purdue makes their worst seats available to visiting fans. We stick visiting fans in the worst possible part of Lane as well. (Edge of the east stands / upper SEZ)

Wiley, Brown, Russell, Drakeford, Gray, Banks, Prioleau, Charleton, Midget, Bird, McCadam, Pile, Hall, Green, Fuller, Williams, Hamilton, Rouse, Flowers, Harris, Chancellor, Carmichael, Hosley, Fuller, Exum, Jarrett

I expected there to be a section of these down by the field similar to the section we give opposing fans near their team entrance. I did not expect there to be many seats, but also did not think they would be this bad.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

I never expect opposing teams to provide decent tickets. But I would Iike to thank you for buying tickets through the Hokie Club.

I find that I just wait to buy tickets through the school. For games like Purdue, there are usually plenty available. I picked up 50 yard line 7 rows up for ticket office prices. Still plenty of tickets in that section available.
