Unfortunately, OTL isn't really making the case that they think they are. The main takeaway I have from the article is that access to legal counsel is what most often prevents someone from facing prosecution and jail time. In the article, in most cases the athletes have access to quality attorneys, while the general students do not. But look at the case of Michigan State, where all students, athletes and non-athletes, have free legal counsel. There, the general students actually did better than the athletes.

Let's look at the quote, they are not comparing apples to apples.
I'd like to see a good study of this.
Here's the quote:

Yet the athletes either never faced charges, had charges against them dropped or were not prosecuted 56 percent of the time. When Outside the Lines examined a comparison set of cases involving college-age males in Gainesville, 28 percent of the crimes ended either without a record of charges being filed or by charges eventually being dropped.
Please note the differences in the wording, which do not have equal standing.
Athletes at U of Fl :
1) never faced charges
2) had charges dropped
3) not prosecuted
non-athletes college age males in Gainesville (not a comparable group)
1) without a record of charges filed
2) charges dropped
Hm, left out a category.
Also, note they assume or imply that all athletes arrested are male. For the sake of argument, let's say this is true.
A better group would be college age men attending 4 year university or better yet, the U. of Fl.
As the wording stands right now, they are comparing college age men partying at the school but whom are unemployed, soldiers, sailors, tinkers and/or spies; etc. This is not a good demographic comparison.

The sad reality of the broken system is that when the real criminals are not prosecuted, innocent civilians pay the price with bogus charges and profiling so the city can meet quota. it's a joke!
