That's the issue, reading the Board of Visitors report about logos there is ALOT wrong. Starting with there isn't one single logo for the entire school.

Because it doesn't seem that the brand standards are strictly enforced. This would need correcting moving forward, otherwise we'd be back with the same current problem.

I saw what Bitter posted about it a while back. The only change I would like to see them make is go from the current university pantone colors to the deeper athletic colors that we've already been using for years. The University's official colors are dull and washed out. The athletic colors are much more saturated and...well...better.

Agreed with this... I would also say, with a little experience on having played with the VT logo before, that we should probably get rid of the double outline around the VT and just go with a maroon VT outlined by the thick orange line. as they have proposed:
Its a cleaner look, and translates better in alternate uses. The double outline ends up washing out from afar, which has always bothered me.

I respect your opinion, but I can't think of any other background that would look good on besides white and maybe a medium to light blue. You can't really use it on a black, dark blue, or red background which are probably the most used colors on tv outside of white. It just blends in with the dark or red based colors. I think you need that white buffer at least on the outside.

this. the white actually makes it look crisper because it adds a contrast line. The white also allows it to blend into many other color options. If you had no white the logo would largely be indistinguishable on certain colors from a distance.

Of course you can... I didn't say you had to stay with the Maroon in the middle and Orange border... adjust between maroon, orange, and white, based on context....
The solid outline makes it stand out a lot more than the double one.

Solid lines can work sometimes but usually you need a white or black line contrast to really make things pop. Maybe try add a small black edge line to yours. It will help create clear, crisp edges so it doesn't look like colors blend into backgrounds.

From personal experience in using the VT logo in design work, the double outline creates issues when viewing from afar. Sure, when its all blown up and the white line is able to be seen clearly, yeah, its not bad and is pretty good. That immediately goes out the window when you start zooming out. And even worse yet, when you see it really from a distance, and especially on white or light surfaces, you the clarity of the outer outline degrades to the point where its difficult to see that its even there:
And then, if you have the logo where the main base is the same as the background, the double outline visually starts to blur, creating something that just doesn't look quite right...
I mean, compare that to this...
The solid border is a much stronger and solid design. With the double outline, it gets very busy very quickly.

jk. Appreciate the opinion. however, the problem with the single solid line on a two color logo, from a design perspective, is that the color matching of it to all background colors is very low. The easiest colors are white and beige. That's why you see a lot of logos outlined in white. Because no matter what's behind it the logo will match. Alternatively you could have just a single color logo without need of outline or use a black outline.

I like your example sheet. I think the orange in your first post is less bright and a little more red (at least it shows up on my screen that way). The orange in your examples seems a little brighter which makes it work better with the darker colors. I like it overall, but I just think the older design is a little more distinguished. It's all personal preference though.

True. We should be targeting the top 5 (assuming we agree with the rankings), and should certainly be able to beat out the other big school in the state for their services. A couple of those misses were head scratchers.

VT=sqrt(1)?

There is nothing wrong with the current VT logo.
Leave it alone!

The shape of the logo is fine. My comment was about the proposal to soften the edges, which I find ridiculous.
If you want to debate the colors, or single/double outline, that is clearly a whole different discussion, as shown below.

still looks less clear than this:

^This is my favorite too. It just looks very distinct.
Completely disagree... From a design perspective the double outline has got to go
What's the logic behind this? I feel like you outlined (no pun intended) this in another thread, but I don't feel like searching for it.

This is the best. The white outline really emphasizes maroon VT and the orange line locks in that white background

Not sure on his comment about us doing as well with the top 10 as we generally do. I think this year and last year will be under our average.
when we are landing top 10 kids they are generally closer to the bottom half of the top 10 as well.

NOOO I hate the rounded corners!
It seriously looks like something straight out of 1993
Rounded corners are certainly no improvement over the crisp VT. Color or border suggestions I'd entertain.
Damn this off season is painful! Can we start practice yet?
Andy forgot to add the actual signing day to the miriad of reaction to recruiting from VT fans.
7. Signing day.....big name recruit who is between us and another school.....and he chooses other school......
