1) When did UNC get to the point where they were no longer considered hand-in-hand with defense? I know they haven't been great the last few seasons but I seem to remember them rivaling VT for best defense back in the Tyrod years. Or maybe we just made their defense look good?
2) I had no idea OSU came that close to losing to Penn State last year. And by golly that was one awful way for it to happen. The only back who's allowed to block Bosa is Sam Rogers.

UNC had a ton of talent on defense recruited by Butch Davis and had very good defenses in 2009-2010...
The defense has tumbled off a cliff under Fedora. They were astonishingly poorly coached the past couple of years- players never improving, ridiculous amounts of busted assignments, and just terrible effort. Also, the talent has been completely depleted on that side of the ball and all of Davis' defensive recruits have graduated (except for Sam Smiley). Chizik might fix the coaching issues, but I'm not sure they have enough talent for huge improvement.

man you are right about that. I thought they had landed some studs recently but outside of jalen Dalton (had forgot shy tuttle spurned them) they don't have much to brag about from 2012-2015.

for me, it puts everything into a light of suspicion. Did they recruit well through normal means or were kids enticed with the easy path to academic success because they were told how "easy" classes were and good the "tutoring" was? Was recruiting good or were Butch and staff giving out promises to kids and parents that were shady?
No doubt Davis can coach, but he is a slimebag that can't win without cheating.
So no matter the results they had on the recruiting trail and the field all the cheating subverts that success and any belief that they achieved anything on their own. IMO

couldn't tell that davis was a good coach while at UNC. For all the talent they acquired, through legal or illegal means, all that ever got them was tire bowls.

UNC defence went from "great players, pretty good results" to "defence??" When Butch Davis left and his players "graduated"
Hey now, a 6th grade graduation is still a major accomplishment for many of those players!
That train derailed about the time when Fedora took over. He's not exactly known as a defensive guy.
That's what I suspected, just wanted someone with real knowledge to weigh in over my clueless fan speculations.
UNC has defensive standouts but didn't play well collectively from what I recall. always had a top notch DLineman or two.
#59 lost that game for PSU. Didn't lay a hand on him. As Coach Searles says, if you don't know what you're doing HIT SOMEBODY!
