Led the ACC in punts, 9th in net yards? BeamerBall at its worst.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

dunno, we could have also led the league in yards allowed on the return.

Averaged 7 yards per punt return (1 TD); allowed 3 yards per return (0 TD). Blocked one; had none blocked. Had 45 returns to opponent's 29. AJ gutted it out with a bad back. I'll take it.

Kickoff returns was another story...

Yeah, opponents had an average net punting of ~36 ypp while VT averaged ~38 ypp and we were 43rd in punting efficiency. So we gained on exchanges of punts, just not as much as other ACC teams, which had several excellent punters last year.

At least we have an actual punter. We are no longer in the dark days like back in 2011

Hughes clearly wasn't punting up to his ability last year but punting stats can be very misleading.

I wonder how many times VT punted from inside the other 40 compared to other teams last year leading to a number of short kicks? My guess is, given that the VT offense could sustain many drives, that number is fairly high?

And how many times did VT punt from inside it's own 5 or 6 yard line thus forcing quick and often shorter punts? Again, my guess is more than most teams.

Something I'm curious about is how stats record punts that are go for a touchback. If the punt travels 48 yards, but is brought back out 20 yards, it's a net 28 yard punt, but is that then factored into those numbers? Because we seemed to be on the bad end of many bad bounces almost as often as we seemed to not get the bounce when returning a punt only to see the opponent down it inside our 5.

im not a fan of count downs lol. 25 days makes it seem so close to football season. its not though. :(

*SN I tried to find a gif for tease but im pretty sure HR in all over my butt now! crap!

As Buzz would say, the VT punting game needs to "get better". I'm hoping a healthy AJ Hughes will help with that.

Another thing that will help tremendously is if he has fewer punts from very close to his own end zone.
