I didn't realize this until I saw this on USA Today:

Suck it, Kirby Smart. Also, worth every damn penny.

Isn't that because of a one time payment?
Probably, and the potential bonus #s drop him lower... But for last year, he was the highest paid.
You are correct. Next years numbers will be more representative of where he is relative to others.
Long overdue. Bud is totally worth the price tag.
Bud cannot be overpaid.
While I agree Bud is due some serious change, this is just because of the one time lump sum he got this year.
And Alabama upped Smart to 1.5 a year and increasing starting this year(everyone on staff but Kiffin got a raise, Lane is still being paid by USC) Chavis at TAMU is also looking at similar numbers of +1.5mil.

Two things I found interesting. Stiney is our third highest paid assistant and searels makes more than TG. For the latter, why?
TG is still fairly young and someone correct me if I'm wrong but Oline coach usually is one of the highest paid position coaches around the country.
Yep, here's their comparative coaching experience from their Hokie Sports profiles:
Stacy Searels
1992-93 Auburn (graduate assistant)
1994-00 Appalachian State (offensive line)
2001-02 Cincinnati (offensive line)
2003-06 LSU (offensive line)
2007-09 Georgia (offensive line)
2010 Georgia (offfensive line/running game coordinator)
2011-12 Texas (offensive line)
2013 Texas (assistant head coach/offensive line)
Torrian Gray
2000-02 Maine (defensive backs)
2002-04 Connecticut (defensive backs)
2004-05 Chicago Bears (assistant defensive backs)
2006-12 Virginia Tech (defensive secondary)
2013 Virginia Tech (defensive secondary/passing game coordinator)
Searels has almost a decade more coaching experience, including stops at several major SEC and B12 programs.
This observation about TGs salary and the fact stated earlier in this thread that Bud's salary drops a lot after this past season (and his flight to aTm earlier this year) helps paint a picture when combined with some other facts. Especially since they are still here. We know we all love the NRV area and VT, but money trumps that for a professional football coach with the credentials these guys have. We know that Whit had discussions with Bud and he is still here. These two things MAY be unrelated - but coincidences don't usually happen.
This discussion and the backdrop data on salaries certainly seems to "suggest" that Whit has a master plan and has had those discussions with Bud and probably TG as well about the future path for VT football coaching staff and their futures. If there wasn't a plan, I suspect these guys would have left already. Bud has considered it at least twice. TG used to coach in the NFL. You know his rep is known in the football coaching community.
I'm gonna say it now (and I may be wrong, but my gut says this): When Whit and Frank agree its time for Frank to retire (and Whit has a # of years max built into that to help hold this together), Bud will be HC and TG will be the DC.
Booyah! (RIP Stuart Scott)
A lot of speculation there, but I hope you're right.
I highly doubt Bud is our next HC. It is my belief that Whit will bring in someone from the outside.
is part of SS's salary still being paid for by Texas as well?
But our secondary has been proven for years thanks to him. Our oline? Not so much.
Devil's Advocate:
Our run of having a great secondary started before TG was the coach.
Lunchpail D deserves every penny!
And Bud is cheap at twice the price.
Leg for Rounders. I love Rounders. Such an underrated movie.
