So here we are at the beginning of July, and September 7th seems so close and yet so far away. With all the talk and hype that seems to be growing (thank Joe and his SACKSburg shirt for that), what do you guys do to remedy the dog days of summer?
For me, it consists of a lot of NCAA Football 14 and watching highlight videos on YouTube...

Beat me to it. Oh well.

I suggest reading this article about Dadi.
Canadian Football is a good filler. The summer is also used for honing my skills on the ol' smoker, so on gamedays I can enjoy heaven. Hokie football and BBQ.
Between Arena, Canadian and international rugby there are so many sports on TV right now. Two Hokies playing in also, Macho in CFL and Randall in Arena.
I know he didn't end as a hokie but Xavier boyce is also on that team with randall (and a lot more productive) and he was cleared of all his legal trouble and is doing a great job of parenting his daughter.
I sat next to Boyce in my technical writing class when his daughter was born. He was such a happy father that day! I'm glad to see he got those legal concerns straightened out.
BTN has condensed replays of classic B1G games running basically non-stop right now. NCAA Football 14 helps as well, but I was always partial to the PS2 games because of smoother gameplay, IMO. So NCAA 11 on PS2 has been fun lately. And of course, constant TKPing throughout the day when possible.
I've dusted off Madden 25...with my Arizona team that picked up every available Hokie programmed into the game.
Tyrod at QB, David Wilson and Ryan Williams as RBs, Jeff King at TE, a WR corps consisting of Boykin, Coale, Fuller 2, and Royal. A defense with D. Hall, Flowers, Hosley, and Worilds.
The game came out a year too early to go 3 deep at QB, and I'm in the second year of franchise/career mode, so Vick retired. And I don't have the corresponding NCAA game to bring in the draft picks.
I just won Super Bowl 49 with that team...19-0 on the season. Final game was against the Texans, still lead by Schaub. It was fun sacking him. And two INTs, one a pick-6 by D. Hall.
Have a kid in May or June, you wont even notice the summer.
This seems like a pretty heavy handed approach to making it through the summer. I guess it is about the right time to start preparing for that next year, which can also help pass the time.
You gotta plan this stuff, you really don't want to have a kid in football season, you don't want to have it even a month before. So there is a window you have. /s
Now to find a way to get this point across to the wife and make her think it's her idea.
Won't work. Wives never want kids. /s
Step 1) make sure you REALLY want a kid

step 2) talk about how busy both your jobs are during the fall/winter add in all the holidays Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years, how if you have a child near them the baby can't enjoy their "first"
step 3) talk about all the great summer outfits babies can wear
Step 4) just do what your wife wants anyway because well she is letting you sleep with her
step 3 is genius!
Learned that 42 years ago. Wish I'd copyrighted the T shirt.
Also, the whole carrying a little heater inside of you during the hot summer months is a great argument. No one wants that
EDIT: Just saw this posted below, so I'm posting for emphasis
We had our first in May and our second in August (2 years later, to avoid any confusion). Here's what we learned:
-being pregnant in summer is awful. Much better to make sure your third trimester doesn't run into the hottest months (boom, september/october babies avoided)
-babies need to stay warm at night, but sleepers (footy pajamas) are a pain for newborns, both getting them on and getting them off to change diapers. Onesies are the way to go and those work best in warm summer months
-a lot of newborns will just sit quietly and look around if they are in a dynamic environment, like being outside. But that only works if it's warm enough to be comfortable. Our second always got too cold outside as an infant, no matter how we dressed her. Our first would calm down immediately when outside.
-Time in the pool is great for taking the stress off your wife's body imposed by carrying around extra weight/all the other crazy changes that happen during pregnancy. Spring is just warm enough to be able to go to most indoor pools without freezing your butt off.
potential problem with this plan: May baby means morning sickness basically til rivalry weekend (depending on the woman/pregnancy of course) which can make for some friction when it comes to trying to enjoy the season as you normally would.
Our first is due in February, so we're getting all the morning sickness unpleasantness out of the way in the off-season. My only concern is that her nesting instinct will kick in right around the time of the bowl games and I'll be painting/cleaning/assembling furniture instead of watching the bowls and playoffs.
Thanks for all the practical tips. I was old enough when my younger siblings came along that I know how to do stuff like changing diapers, but I have no clue about the little things like these.
So, you're saying:
In August:
But in December:
Maybe my perspective is skewed because I work two out of three weekends, on evening shift.
But my kid arrived in late September 2012. So, between the time off for baby leave (which I split into two parts), regular weekends off, conveniently timed night games, and then Thanksgiving, I only had to work during one game -- and it was against Austin P.
Ain't that the truth!
Does anyone play ultimate team on NCAA14?
Anyone want to play fun matches such as only acc players, or offensive lineman only teams?
Replied to wrong post.
You do realize it's only a video game, right?
I usually start sniffing glue around this time to kill off the summer. That or start a house project that I won't actually finish for a number of years.
keep telling myself i'm gonna stain that deck. . . eh maybe next week
Dont forget that it takes months of careful planning before you can get started...
And at least one more power tool
You picked the wrong summer to stop sniffing glue.
I just got promoted, and in the Army the more rank you get the more you actually have to work. So, my summer is flying by which is awesome right now. The downside is work will not subside during the season and I'll have to DVR a few games and will myself not to check twitter and convince asshole friends not to send vague text's about the game.
During the offseason, I prefer to watch pump up trailers, such as this one:
lmao that was great. Here is another one just as good
This was pretty good too. BillDozer really needs to step his game up.
words escape me.
The targeting of Big10 hockey in that is pretty sweet...
Is it just me, or was anyone else expecting the polar bear to pull a Coke out and swig it at any point during this?
If he did this the Coke bottle would probably explode like everything else in the video :(
At least the bears are killing everyone.
Making the 2015 Trailer.
This is what I am waiting for. The season starts for me when BillDozerVT gets the juices rolling!
Sweet! Hope its released over the summer (soon!) to help us get through these doldrums.
CANT WAIT...I have been watching the "Tech is Triumphant in the Horseshoe" Vid for almost the past year! Time to memorize a new 2 minutes of plays while chugging beer.
I just watched the "condensed version" (and whoever put that beauty together, TYVM) last night on my Roku/Youtube on my big ol' flatscreen. I also dipped into a bit of some Nebraska/VT game nirvana, for a nightcap.

Maybe it was the beer, maybe it was the games, deliciously glazed in all of their glorious-ness, but oddly, I didn't lose the slightest bit of enthusiasm from the first time I saw them.
Ahhh...maybe tonight I'll search for Hokie victories over ATM, LSU, or Tennessee.
It's always a great day to be a Hokie.
Sometimes when I watch old games I still get nervous even though I know what's gonna happen
You have no idea how excited I am for this...
Work, beer, girls, whiskey, coaching basketball. no particular order.
In my experiences whisky and then girls has never turned out too good.. Be that for me or them. I prefer your order the way it is!
Whiskey has gotten the better of me a couple of time in my past, it was good whiskey though.... I think.
It always plays this weird trick on me where I go to sleep with a 10 and wake up next to a 3-4, still haven't figured out where the girls are disappearing to but the jokes getting old!
Sounds like you are at least doing the drinking portion correctly.
At least I'm doing something right
im sure they were beautiful on the inside though!
Fishing.
Lots of pre-season magazines. So far I have Athlon national and B1G editions, sporting news, ESPN, and Lindy's. We have 3 bathrooms, but I only use 2. These are strategically placed and I spend a lot of time sitting, reading, and thinking about CFB. :)
Something to pas the time...oh I dunno. Porn maybe?
Some thoughts you might keep to yourself.
If you knew my situation (in addition to the wait) you would say differently.
HokieMcGruber26 at home getting totally psyched up for football season
This one never gets old. Probably tells the ladies he named it "Red Raider".
The video of the bell ringer makes me crack up every time.
Haha this is hilarious but sadly no, not at the comfort of my own home (which in part explains said situation).
Never ring the bell!
But 30 second later you'd need something else to pass the time.
I was wondering when this gif would show up for that comment.
=p
Ok that's kinda weird (false). Kinda creepy. How would you be able to acquire such info from a person? What other bizarre fetishes are you into?
Grilling, drinking with friends, hiking...drinking. Friends.
Just gotta enjoy the summer. I can't wait for football season (trust me, I'm dying for some) ...but being stationed in South Dakota, football season also means cold water, and that means snow. I'm not ready for snow or cold weather.
Walleye fishing, then.
Summer is for relaxing, and if you like relaxing and sports there's baseball. I watch the Nats just about every night when I get home, even when I don't want to my family makes me. Because there's so many games its always there for you. There's always news, always something meaningful to pay attention to instead of weeks of rumors. Off days are terrible because you notice the absence of a game more than its presence. Sit down and watch with a beer and/or some food or cook with it in the background. Grilling with the game on the radio is really soothing. Pick a team, invest yourself in them, go to some games, and relax.
Summer is a great time to try out new bourbons in preparation for the fall. It also helps keep the liver functioning at peak performance for the assault that's coming!
In summer, we make the lagers we'll be consuming in the fall.
Fishing on Lake of the Woods. Walleye musky and SM Bass. Brown juice. NO babies!
Track season in Saratoga Springs starts July 24th. In honor of the occasion, Sam the Bugler says "Tech Triumph!"
I just bought 5 tickets for the VT whopping Purdue game! So me, my wife, 14 year old son, and 12 and 10 year old daughters will be there wearing our VT bling. Closest game for us and first game ever to see VT play. I will spend the rest of my summer hyping my kids up, waiting for the tickets to arrive, and generally being a pain in the butt to everyone around here (edit: by here I mean the home area) telling them about it.
Just keep this guy away from your daughters
What is going on in this gif? Other than creepy dude, everyone else is just standing and staring in different directions without saying anything.
I'm guessing that they're waiting to call a timeout as the play-clock approaches 0.
No, this is what they call Purdue football. (The Midwest version of loluva football lately.)
It's not often we play 2 FBS LOL* teams during the same year. This should be special.
More Cowbell?
MOAR COWBELL!
Swimming, drinking, fishing, sighting in rifles, drinking?
OT, but I've had to do a lot of driving lately and want to listen to some sort of VT football talk show or something besides my music on Spotify and the radio. Does anyone know of a podcast or something that I could download to my phone and listen in the car?
Glennon does one.

Beards.
Weddings. Get that shit out of the way before September comes because you're an inconsiderate jerk if you schedule it during football season.
crap, just realized I have to go to a wedding the weekend of the pitt game. Bride is a tech alumna, too. Fail.
My cousin and her husband, both Tech alum, got married the day of the M. Vick WVU miracle game, listened to it on a car radio.
One of my cousins got married a couple years ago when we were playing a cupcake team (can't remember who it was beyond being either an FCS or Mid-Major team). My dad and I listened to the game using the Tune-In app on my phone at the reception.
Nice. I was in a wedding where there was a mini-reception right after the ceremony, then a 4 hour break before the main reception so we could all go watch the game. I don't remember the game, but it was an away one so that's the best I could have done anyway. The bride and groom were conspicuously absent from the game-watching crowd...
I've got a wedding to go to during the ECU game. Not a big deal really. Could have been way worse.
That's why God made TIVO, innit?
I was actually in a wedding during last year's ECU game. The wedding was nice (Herschel Walker actually showed up at the reception), but the game made me sad.
Finally getting around to cleaning that extra fridge. So I can put all the beer I've acquired over the past few months for football season will be nice and cold when I want it. And then cleaning out the extra room in the garage to put the tv, chairs, VT gear. Making tables in a few weeks. The cornhole boards are done. Have some neons I can hang. And this year, for the first time in like 6 years, no Saturday soccer!!!! I get to watch college football. With 2 teen boys, nice to have an escape to resort to with them occasionally. Or just send them out there...
As for the beer, have a sixer of all of these in cans for the season:
21st amendment brew free or die
21st amendment sneak attack
anderson valley ipa
firestone walker union jack ipa
ballast point grapefruit sculpin ipa
sixpoint resin double ipa
stillwater yacht ipa

evil twin falco ipa
jailbreak big punisher double ipa
dale's pale ale

plus some bombers and various other six packs.
What, no pabst blue ribbon.../s
Once I know how much room is left there will be some Miller Lite in there, for nostalgia.
And you're sending two teen age boys out there? I volunteer to chaperon!
Fixing up the place is partially for them...and they get paid in gatorade and a place outside the house to veg once its done. But if you want to help, I think I've got some beer I can share!
Sounds like a great space for you and the guys. Enjoy your selection, their company, and the upcoming fantastic Hokie season.
Anybody know anything to do in Johnstown, NY?
(We're checking out a bookstore there, but it is an hour away and want to make best use of time)
