The Key Play's Welcome to SACKSburg Tee Shirt For Sale Now

Upgrade your maroon and orange wardrobe collection and celebrate the Hokies' excellence for putting opposing quarterbacks on the turf.

Virginia Tech defenses have a knack for sacking quarterbacks, more so than their counterparts at every other major college football program.

The Key Play's Joel Smith examined the Hokies sack proficiency over the last ten seasons, and the analysis leaves little room for any other college football program to argue it's better at sacking quarterbacks than Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech Sack Statistics

Virginia Tech Sack Statistics

Virginia Tech Sack Statistics

More from Joel, in the past decade (2005-2014), Virginia Tech is:

  • No. 1 in total sacks with 367 (as well as sacks per game).
  • No. 1 in sacks per pass attempt; on nearly 10% of pass attempts by opposing teams in the past decade, the QB was sacked.
  • No. 1 in sacks per completion; for every 10 completions by opposing teams, they are sacked nearly twice.
  • No. 1 in sack yards per pass yard; for every 10 yards opponents gain passing, they lose over a yard due to sacks.
  • No. 3 in sack yards per season; opponents lose 252 yards per season to sacks. That easily exceeds an entire game's passing yards allowed.

Virginia Tech's lowest single-season sack total of the past 10 years (28) is higher than the average sack total of 79 of the 119 teams that have played during that span. 10 schools haven't had a single season higher than the Hokies' worst.

Among the top 10 programs in total sacks over the past decade, only Bud Foster has been defensive coordinator during the entire span. The other 9 defensive coordinators have a combined sum of 16 years of experience as defensive coordinator of their current schools, with an average tenure of less than 2 years. None have been defensive coordinator at their current school more than 4 years. Only Bud can say he built his ranking.

Virginia Tech's aggressive, yet disciplined, defensive scheme and athletic versatile defenders combine to crush quarterbacks.

With all of that said, The Key Play proudly presents our Welcome to SACKSburg t-shirt which is available for pre-order now. The idea was inspired by Hokie13's suggestion. The final product was polished to the clean look of our other designs.

723 sacks since 1996? Why we gotta be so mean to the quarterbacks? It aint right

I'm sure a good number of them had it coming

All of them did

I wish we had one more against Matt Ryan on Thursday, October 25th, 2007. In other news after looking that up I cannot believe how long ago that actually was.

Insert obligatory "Fuck Matt Ryan" comment which receives 30+ turkey legs.

Alllllmost to 30...

Done-

I heard we were talking about sacks in here.

That photo is a thing of beauty.

I'm pretty sure that his fear of VT sacks is why Lambert transferred to Georgia.

Screw this shit coach, I'm going to Athens.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

Now I have to wait for my shirt to arrive....

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

This is great! It reminds me of the Brock Lesnar 'Suplex City' shirt the WWE just put out - my Fall wardrobe is set.

Putting in a preorder(s) now.

#TeamPeanutButter - because your cakes, pies, cookies, and ice creams are better with it!

You'll have to update it pretty often, but hopefully not this often:

Think you mean MORE often.

We put the K in Kwality

I guess I mean, more often*

*After September 7th only

We'll just make one change on September 8th, to 733.

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

So is that 3 on Cardale, 3 on JT, 3 on Braxton, and 1 on Evan Spencer running the trick play from the Sugar Bowl?

I was just thinking "If we get that many sacks, what are the chances they'll even have a QB by the end of the game? Does it still count as a sack if they direct snap it to a RB?"

Though to be fair, we racked up 7 against Tom Savage (Pitt) a few years back and he played the whole game. I guess not every sack is Dadi and Ekanem breaking a QB's soul...

Seems a little low, better check your #sources! ;)

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
β€œI served in the United States Navy"

Every time i think of QB sacks I think of the horrible awesome things we did to Hunter Cantwell in the gator bowl.

Ordering now....

poor poor Hunter

You know, I never saw that game.
Anybody know where I can get a high quality viewing of that?

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Outstanding, thanks.

My google foo was weak.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I was already on HokieTapes watching 2004 vs YouVA

It's one of my favorite games of all time. It was the classic bi-polar hokie watching experience. I yelled in anger so much yet celebrated so much at some of the awesome big plays on both sides of the ball.

Why, why be a QB?

"Exit light..."

Ordered! Wait mode now enabled.

Next step is to get one of our video editing folks to make an awesome highlight real of some nasty sacks we created and label it SACKSBURG... just to make it official on the interwebs!

Dangit!! I knew I should never have gone 3 days without reading TKP!!!
