It may only be July, but some of the top prospects in the 2016 class are already narrowing their lists of suitors.
A pair of Tech's most hotly pursued out of state prospects, WR Tino Ellis of Hyattsville, Md.'s DeMatha Catholic HS and DE Zack Gilbert of Charlotte's South Mecklenburg HS, have culled their extensive offer lists in recent weeks, and the Hokies were lucky enough to make the cut in both cases.
Now Tech's staff is working to get both prospects back to campus sometime this month to seal the deal.
Ellis has long considered Tech among his favorite schools, so it was hardly a surprise to see the Hokies on the list of top six schools he tweeted out this weekend.
I have narrowed my list down to 6 schools in no order.........Decision Date July 31st #Final6 pic.twitter.com/ILdOHkGqob— Tino Ellis (@IamTinoEllis) July 4, 2015
The rising senior says he plans to visit Tech, Rutgers and West Virginia this month, while his parents recently took the short trip over to Maryland's campus without him in tow.
But despite these plans, Ellis created a stir on Twitter when he revealed that he's already picked out a college he wants to attend.
Tbh I know my decision — Tino Ellis (@IamTinoEllis) June 21, 2015
Ellis says that bit of social media reflection is still accurate, and he feels his mind is already mostly made up.
"I kind of fell for one school, so I'm just keeping one school in mind right now," Ellis said. "I haven't told many people, I'm keeping it in the dark for now."
But whether that school he has in mind is Tech or not, Ellis says he's still looking forward to taking another trip to Blacksburg.
"I'll probably go sometime in the first couple weeks of July," Ellis said. "I just want to see the new indoor facility, how it looks, and get another tour of campus."
Ellis says WR coach Zohn Burden and OC Scot Loeffler talk with him constantly about the Hokies, but they're not the only ones doing so.
"I just talked with (2016 WR commit Eric) Kumah, he told me he wants to play with me over there," Ellis said. "My old teammate (sophomore WR) Cam Phillips, he stays in my ear, (senior CB) Donovan Riley is my cousin, so I hear from him a lot too. There's lot of guys trying to get me there."
Despite those overtures, Ellis says he hasn't changed his mind about announcing his college choice in late July, most likely with a ceremony at his school.
But even once he lets the rest of the world in on his decision, Ellis says he "still would be open" for taking officials once the season gets started.
Gilbert has a less rigid timetable for making a decision.
He stresses he's open to opportunities from each one of the schools in his new top five, and even would welcome other suitors should they offer.
Wanted to thank God for the opportunity that these colleges are giving.
Here are my Top5.

But first and foremost, he'd like to get down for another trip to Virginia Tech. He last saw campus for a Junior Day back in February and was planning on returning the weekend of June 20, but a "ride situation" kept him at home.
Now he's targeting a July 25 return date to spend some time with other recruits that will be in town for a team event that day, giving him "a chance to hang out" with the prospects and the coaching staff alike.
Gilbert says he's eagerly awaiting that chance, given his interest in the program.
"They play superb defense, their defensive coordinator is the best in the country, and they led the ACC in sacks last year, which is right up my alley," Gilbert said. "They've shown a lot of interest in me from the start, and they're good at both football and academics."
But for all the superlatives he's willing to offer the Hokies, Gilbert says the other programs on his list made the cut for a reason.
In particular, he has deep family ties to the Pitt Panthers. Not only is he the cousin of famous alum Darrelle Revis, but his father played college ball there before heading to the pros.
"That family really runs deep there," Gilbert said. "My dad graduated there and went on to a good NFL career. When we walked through campus together, he could point out all this stuff he remembered. Plus they're a really good business school, which definitely interests me."
Despite the familial connection he feels to that program, Gilbert admits the allure of staying in-state is a powerful one, and UNC offers plenty of positives.
"Their staff is kind of new, and they're really up and coming," Gilbert said. "I like their new defensive coordinator (Gene Chizik) since he used to be the coach at Auburn, and lots of my boys are committed there. Chapel Hill was the first school to offer me and I've been there many times."
Yet the other program just a few miles away also qualified for Gilbert's top bunch. He says the allure of Duke's academics would be tough to ignore.
"They're the best in the country at all these different things, so if I were to commit there, it would be for the education," Gilbert said. "My cousin (Fayetteville, N.C. CB) Mark Gilbert just committed there and we have a lot of similar interests, and he tells me how great it is there all the time. Football there is really on the come-up and it would be nice to stay in-state."
But for all his focus on academics, Gilbert admits that the football acumen and personality of West Virginia's coaching staff has also helped win him over.
"I really like what their staff is about, they're really bright guys," Gilbert said. "They talk with me about life after football, and they're up front with things, they won't keep talking to you if you're not interested, which is different. Plus my cousin (sophomore safety) Dravon Henry goes there and tells me about what it's like there."
But Hokies fans shouldn't worry about getting crowded out by all the other voices in Gilbert's ear. Early-enrolled freshman Adonis Alexander played against Gilbert when the two were both in Charlotte, and he's keeping the pressure on about Tech and some of its attractive new features.
"Adonis sends me pictures of their new facility all the time, it looks amazing," Gilbert said. "I can't want to see it."
Gilbert says he's unsure exactly when he'll make a choice between the five top contenders for his services, but he notes that trip to Tech could play a role in when he pulls the trigger.
"That visit could mean a lot, it could make me decide to hold off on my commitment, or even move it up," Gilbert said.

Tino would be a huge get. He's one of the top targets left on the board and a playmaker.
Tino would be great but I want both! Gilbert is very impressive also.
It makes me sick seeing Kentucky on anybody's list. Tino is going to be huge! Him being from Maryland obviously they are a strong contender, look at Stefon Diggs he could've gone anywhere but decided to stay home because it meant that much to him!
With Tino though you guys have a distinct advantage with Donovan Riley being his cousin and undoubtedly talking VT up as the best thing in the world. It will be tough to get him but I would say you guys are the front-runner right now.
cam seems to be a bigger factor IMO. Was like a mentor to him at dematha.
I agree, going somewhere (VT) that has both family and great friends will give him the same sense of home life that Maryland would. That's why I have him going to you guys. As long as he doesn't end up in the SEC I'm happy though.
The fact Cam came in and played as a freshman I feel like could be a huge pull as well.
That Alex Koma is one hard working Hokie! 6:57 am! One more reason to wear my new SACKSburg shirt with pride.
How many cousins does Gilbert have? Seems like he has family at every D1 school. Ellis is a must get for this class IMO.
I very much want them both in Blacksburg
that being said, the fact that these 2 recruits would both be monumental helps and we could use them immediately, that means they'll both go elsewhere... *sigh*
my only concern, if you can call it that, about gilbert is that I think he'll be a DT for us. We already have one smaller DT in clay dean and DE is the main position of need as we are pretty stacked at DT scholarship wise.
if Tino commits to us, we're going to have a MONSTER receiving corp to pull from...Coach Burden's hiring is paying off in spades!
I still want Galloway too. Elite speed with that guy.
There will be no denial of pussy touchdowns!!!
Mwuhahahahaaaah!!!
That's some serious Dork Magic!!
Fully dipped, one might say
That's what she said!
So I guess the original plan to commit at that Twerps bar has been cancelled? A good sign, hopefully.
A combo of Tino & Kumah could be deadly in the future with the talented QBs VT has on the roster.
I can smell a national championship with Dwayne Lawson throwing to Tino Ellis and Eric Kumah.
Granted this is just twitter fodder at best, but Tino seems really close with QB Dwayne Haskins Jr. who committed to the Terps. He is constantly tweeting with him about their potential as a college duo, I hope we can hold off the home team with him.
Just came across this...
Now, we wait...
Thats interesting since he was saying he already knew his decision .
I don't know if this helps us, but it definitely does not hurt us
Since he had made a decision without visiting Tech, I think this is a better scenario than the previous.
Just so my timeline is correct, he said on Twitter that he had made up his mind before he visited Tech this month?
He then said that he is now delaying his commitment?
At the very least seems like a better shot for the good guys.
Correct, and by reading Maryland message boards, they don't see this as good news for them.
I'm going to choose to agree with you.
Ok, I'm confused. Is he scheduled to visit Tech?
I wonder if he got some late offers recently... we will see
No delay after all, keeping the July 31 date.
Interesting...
I guess we'll know soon enough.
I'd like to see him make it down to VT on July 25th, as previously planned, though.
Sounds like UMD is a done deal.
I find the Twerps particularly annoying. Their recruiting has improved over the past few years. Haskins was a big grab, and Ellis could be part of the ripple effect.
I don't understand why it would be a "done deal." We have our advantages too. He knows people on the team, we have great system for receivers right now & opportunity to play early, good QB's down the line, and we have some big games in the next four years scheduled *cough* Bristol *cough*. Unless state pride really runs through his veins I wouldn't count us out. It would be a better feeling if he makes the trip down though on July 25th.
I thought he already said he wasn't visiting VT this summer before he commits?
"Pretty much done" is what I think he mentioned. So he hasn't visited us but yet has us in his top list of schools? He has discussed with his family and coach but you think an argument would be to visit all the schools. I guess we will see come July 31st... :/
He's been here at least three times before, just not this summer. He has been very quiet in terms of visits since April (when he declared us his leader, though that was before his WVU visit), as I don't believe he has actually made it to any schools over the summer despite stated plans to make it to at least 6-7...
Neither side seems to be wavering on their predictions as of yet, although there is some nervousness on the VT side of things. I would say a 50/50 tossup, though we seem to lose more than our fair share of those...
So you're saying...
50% of the time, it works <=49% of the time?
Not even remotely to being a done deal. I'd say it is 50-50 between Maryland and VT and no will know for sure until he announces.
Doesn't really feel like July 31st will be the end of his recruitment, no matter which school he chooses. I kind of expect him to say UMD and then wed have a shot at flipping him. Kind of like Fullwood and Clark last year
How much does Diggs like playing at Maryland?
Unfortunately, he's kinda digging it.
Pretty sure that he IS in fact visiting this weekend.
Turkey leg just to get you away from that bad number. But do you have #sources?
I'm feeling pretty good if he does in fact visit this weekend. Hopefully Dwayne has been talking to him about catching TDs in Bristol.
Can't hurt.
I also hear Landon Dickerson is in town.
