I really hope we're in a situation where we can comfortably redshirt Williams and McKenzie. Though every ACL tear and recovery is different, it just seems like the best option would be to let them recuperate and let the three likely starters carry the rock in 2015.

I put my faith in the coaches and Dr.'s. If Shai is as ready to go as he'll ever be, play him. One thing's for sure in my mind: While we've had backs that accomplished more than I think any of our current guys alone would (even if one of them got as many carries as RW and DW), we've never been so deep with talent at the position and it IS going to pay off.

I agree, I think Edmunds is a better athlete but McKenzie may have been a better back before 2 ACL's. Hopefully he gets back, but it will be difficult. It is probably Edmunds' rock this year.

I just can't forget how explosive Trey looked at times before his injury (think vs Alabama or even last year up to his last play against UNC; he was tearing it up). Of course there was a play against Western Michigan when Mckenzie went through the hole and their best LB came up to make the hit and he literally crumbled when he hit Mckenzie. Shai's momentum stopped for a second, he looked down at him and just continued trucking ala Darren Evan style. I enjoyed watching that play so much cause it reminded of the ol' VT running game.

Man, I miss the DE/RMFW days. I mean, DW was ridiculous and all, but the other two would just bowl over defenders or stiff arm them into the ground and knock off 10 more yards on a regular basis.

Those were some good backs, but did you see the holes they were running through most of the time?? I think Shai, Juice, and Trey could be damn near as good with some good blocking. Hope we get to see that in the near future.

I'm not even talking about the holes. I'm talking about what happened to safeties who came up for run support or corners who tried to run them down. What I wouldn't give for a back who squeezed 5-10 more yards out of every run just because they refused to be taken down 1-on-1. I'm hoping we have a couple of those who were just too banged up to show it last year.

Ditto.
I get sad watching those highlights thinking how far gone we are in such a short time.
But, we've got the pieces to run the ball again this year.

I think in pure measurables you may be right, but Shai is an ultra-natural runner with great shake, and Trey is still pretty unnatural.
If Wyatt and crew open holes all year the way they did for JC the last four games, the JC/Trey/Travon/Sam/Peoples stable will be just fine while our studs rehab.

He has seemed unnatural at times, but I thought he looked better towards the end of last year in terms of being patient waiting for holes to develop, hitting the right holes, etc. He kind of reminds me of a less explosive david Wilson as they were full speed ahead and just hoped their explosiveness would get them through whichever hole they picked.

I think it would really be beneficial two redshirt the two injured backs. We have three really viable options, and maybe more with Reid and some others coming around in fall practice. There is no need to muddle this position like it has the past three years with two backs coming off mid to later season ACL surgeries, one being his second and not being with the team because of a sex charge. The other having some fumbling issues (we lose the Ohio St game if it was determined that the Buckeyes recovered Williams' fumble). There were others as well, I believe on the 2 yard line vs Miami right out of the half that killed any chance we had that night. We cant afford to play a back that isnt 100% or that much better than the rest, that will fumble.
Edmunds would have started last year if healthy, Coleman picked up the slack at the end of the season and McMillian may be the best on the roster.
I like what McKenzie and Williams bring to the table, but think they will help us more in '16 than '15.

Same with Edmunds. Dude looks like he hasn't left the weight room since the UNC game. Like he got hurt and decided there was nothing left to do in the world but rehab and lift. I think those two plus Travon will be rock solid for us this year.

Great Summer article links Andy. The Taylor article is great news. I'll be watching preseason Bills games for sure!
Loved this in the Bleacher Report about Coach Foster:
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Foster's 16 seasons of great defense in Blacksburg is that, unlike Smart, Muschamp and Chavis, he's done it with recruiting classes that usually rank outside the top 20 nationally. Under Foster, these prospects have turned into NFL draft picks and the foundation of some of the game's most feared defenses.
That is Chopping Wood over the long haul!!
Even Mel Kiper is afraid of Sam Rogers. I'd love to see Sam in the NFL (but not until after his senior year)!

I just got really excited about Travon McMillian. I feel that this kid has potential. Granted, I'm just looking at his athletic attributes, but I'm hoping he is a smart player, too. For example, he's 6' 0", considerably taller than Coleman, who is at 5"7'. He's only 4 pounds heavier than Coleman, meaning he is 194 lbs. From those two alone, it sounds like he must be pretty quick. When it comes to his weightlifting, he squats a hefty 400 lbs! Though not as much as Coleman, that's still a big number for a redshirt freshman. McMillian has time to improve and this sounds like a good foundation for his first year on the field. Though this may not be his year, I think it's worth getting excited for the future. Let's just hope he doesn't follow the injuries all of our RBs have been known for quite recently.

So you were pretty much the strongest kid in the country? Congrats.
400 is an ok number for a guy coming into his RS-FR year. 350 lb bench though is very good. would definitely like to see him work more on the lower body especially as a RB, but it's not like he's "weak".
That's what I was thinking. The link I posted above has the position records for Front Squats and those #s are in the 400s and 500s. I think Gentry decided to switch to front squats because of the lower risk of injury. The back squat records stop at 2006, while the front squat records are more recent.

they still do both. if it doesn't say front squat specifically it's a back squat, which is what they call it on hokiesports for travon. There is an older HS article on travon that says he benches 300 and squats 500 though, so maybe it is front squats. He listed a 515 BS on his hudl.
Maybe linemen do back squat and backs/receivers do the front squat. That seems like the most likely explanation for why Conte and Teller who are in the top 3 for every other lift don't appear on the front squat list at all.

Do you mean quarter squat like 90% of people you see squatting at Gold's? That's not a squat by any powerlifting federation's standards. If you actually were squatting below parallel, according to exrx, you would be beyond elite for every weight class. You should have pursued a career in professional powerlifting.
There are other strength standards websites that are less generous than exrx, but chances are you were ego lifting and never broke parallel.
Sad thing is I thought of this before posting but figured all you dumbasses wouldn't think of it that way and just compare the t-rex arm and leg size difference. You dumbasses are too smart for jokes!
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I have no idea what standards were being used. I was maxing in my high schools weight room the summer before my senior year in preparation for the upcoming football season. I went down pretty low, but likely wasn't below parallel. My coaches counted it, and I can brag about it, so that's what matters. Although the more years get between then and now, the less it means. It was 19 years ago after all...

Absolutely, and I don't mean to disrespect what any of these young men accomplish. It's just when I saw him making a big deal about a 400 pound squat I personally didn't see that as huge, but that was my perception, perhaps I was wrong. My apologies.

I did some research at the gym this morning. Here are the results:
Hot girl was doing some squats. She had good form, very good form. That's as far as I got.

While I agree Shai may well be the best back on campus, the notion that Trey is unnatural is ludicrous to me.

trey to me is better in both aspects. His problem is his vision, but I think he was showing improvement in that as well before getting injured again.

"...not being with the team because of a sex charge."
Swear to God, I saw "sex change" the first 2 times I read that.
The world today (sheesh)...I'm trying to keep up here people. Carry on.
I think Coleman will surprise us this year. Seems to be a lot of heart in him.
Same with Edmunds. Dude looks like he hasn't left the weight room since the UNC game. Like he got hurt and decided there was nothing left to do in the world but rehab and lift. I think those two plus Travon will be rock solid for us this year.

Shook hands with Travon after the Spring Game, can confirm, dude is already rock solid.

Sorry, but I don't find a 400 pound squat that impressive. My senior year of high school I was 190 and could squat 700.
So you were pretty much the strongest kid in the country? Congrats.

http://www.goheavy.net/records/viewrecordsetgroup.aspx?recordsetgroupgui...
Not only that, but a 700lb squat would put him tied for the 4th highest on the Hokie All-Time Elite Club.
http://www.hokiesports.com/strength/football/records.html
350 bench? That part is more impressive. Never meant to imply that he's weak, he can probably outlift me in any lift right now.
I think that's a front squat number, they usually run lower than back squats (parallel and box) because you're using different muscles in the lift.

They began doing three-rep maxes for some of those lifts a few years ago to lessen the chances of injury.
Do linemen also not do the front squat?
515 lbs of BS is quite a lot of BS

PS: I'm a powerlifter with a phenomenal squat and shitty benchpress :(
Pretty sure most T-rex's suck horribly at the bench press and are great the squat though. You're nothing special...
:)
I dunno man, short arms are a huge bonus for bench press. Think how little he'd have to move each rep.
This is true!
Sad thing is I thought of this before posting but figured all you dumbasses wouldn't think of it that way and just compare the t-rex arm and leg size difference. You dumbasses are too smart for jokes!

No worries man. I did the same thing in highschool until I prepped for my first competition. It is never too late to start!
Do you find Super Iron Hokie honors impressive?

Roger. Continue observations and return to the board with your findings in picture form.
J/k dont do that. It'll get you arrested and put on a registry.
