Good job spotting the article.

They goofed on the rankings though. Almost got it right.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

SB Nation came close to get it right. With a healthy Facyson and K. Fuller, Clark, Reavis , Ryley VT has the best secondary in the NCAA. I fully understand the reason the Hokies are ranked second. The top two DBs haven't been healthy lately.

Why would you even post this? terrible, drivel that is not worth reading. shame on you.

JK

Thanks for the post and please post more. have a leg!

My top 5:
1. VT
2. Fuller
3. Clark
4. Facyson/Reavis tie
5. I dunno, LSU?

Also worth mentioning, as linked in the article, the 2013 VT secondary was ranked as one of the top 10 secondaries of the past 15 years

I forgot how ridiculous the 2001 Miami team was.

And the fact that we almost beat them with a QB throwing 4 picks.

That 2001 Miami team was so ridiculous though.

How do we get ranked #2 with two lockdown corners? That is absurd.

They are giving Brandon the benefit of the doubt by calling him a lockdown corner so not sure there is much to complain about. We still have a lot of question marks in the secondary, but the talent is there and if we stay healthy they can push for that top spot as long as our pass rush is as good as we think it will be.

We don't have a lot of question marks. The only one is how good is Reavis going to be?

We don't know how clark will adjust to playing at FS or how reavis will play at rover. Both are very talented and clark has a ton of PT, but he's not playing in the role he's accustomed to and not used to making the calls. We also don't know if Brandon is really healthy, so yes we do have a lot of question marks. It's not like we have 3 returning entrenched starters coming back.

Clark is an established player whose natural position is safety so he isn't a question mark. The writer labeled Facyson as a lockdown corner so clearly the writer doesn't have him as a question mark. That leaves Reavis as the only question mark.

still a question mark until he plays it at this level, which he hasn't. He also may still be at corner or nickel at this point it's not certain. I don't really care what the writer labeled facyson as, but until he's back 100% on the field he's a question mark as well.

They're wrong and they should feel bad...

First off Clark is the FS, not Frye.
Second who cares what the recruiting rankings were, those are meaningless for anyone but t-Fr

Wiley, Brown, Russell, Drakeford, Gray, Banks, Prioleau, Charleton, Midget, Bird, McCadam, Pile, Hall, Green, Fuller, Williams, Hamilton, Rouse, Flowers, Harris, Chancellor, Carmichael, Hosley, Fuller, Exum, Jarrett

There's speculation that Clarke will slide into the nickel spot with Frye as the FS in 4-2-5 looks. It's essentially what he did last year, except with Frye coming in as FS instead of Riley as the field corner. I think that's where this comes from...

Otherwise I agree... plus Reavis was a 4* by both Rivals and 247 anyway.

At least one of the 11w commenters thinks we "got a bump" because we were the only defense to beat OSU. I said it's possible, but politely disagreed. We've had the staff, personnel, and on-field production for many years.

And I also surmised that Bama and Sparty, two teams laid eggs (on defense) down the stretch, may be more likely helping our defensive rankings than Sept. 7th.

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Yeah, that's wrong... We may have gotten a slight bump in efficiency ratings adjusted for opponent, but not overall. We were #2 in S&P+ pass defense last year, #14 in pass efficiency defense, and #1 in completion percentage allowed. Even with all the big plays we were excellent at pass D and we return 3 (albeit out of 5) starters. The ranking is optimistic but certainly defensible and likely justified. You could easily make an argument for the top 4 teams to be in any order. The Footballstudyhall guys may not get everything right, but they rarely just say things without any solid support.

The most impressive thing that was not mentioned was that none of our DBs are Seniors. I know its not 100% likely, but what if they all came back next year?

Just for a moment I imagined that scenario...

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

funny that they still are looking at the star rankings from high school.. that's why UF is 1 and we're 2 when in reality we should be 1 since we took 3 star kids and made them better than 5 star kids lol.

So Facyson is our number 1 corner over Kendall because we worked him up from 3 stars?

Means we can take a 5 star and turn him into Bo Jackson from Techmo Bowl.

@hokie_rd

Nope. Kendall is our #1 corner because Fuller.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

No but his point was that the only reason Florida is rated where they are is the attention paid to star ratings.

You really are a contrarian Kff I have noticed.

Yea it looks to be that way around here. But I just see people get caught up with thinking writers and rankings are out to get VT all the time with whatever analysis they use. Like it didn't occur to anyone that maybe Florida just has a better secondary than us. I know TKP doesn't like dissenting opinions, but either way his point didn't make any sense for why we should be rated higher

I don't think anyone was ignoring the fact that maybe Florida just had a better secondary. But the empirical data shows that the two are very close and its more or less a toss up between the two.

Therefore, is it that far of a stretch to say that one group would get the edge over another based off of perceived talent level? Which is exactly what those stars represent.

Riley is going to play a lot, no? More than Frye.

Personally, I doubt it. Kind of a tweener- not truly a safety and wasn't truly a corner. I think Riley was mostly playing rover in spring anyway and got beaten out by Reavis. However, from what I recall that fifth DB spot is still up for grabs.

With no Revis yes Riley needs to play a lot.

Read the comments. One poster called Florida State fans "The Scientologists of the college football world".
