New Michigan Nike deal worth $169 million, 15.4 mil per year. Nike's next highest contract is 4.4 mil per year to FSU. The crazy part? Nike was the LOWEST bidder.
The new wave of athletic gear contracts are going to be crazy with this setting the bar. Lets hope VT times it right and capitalizes.
Edit: Actually between 10.1 and 10.9 mil per year. 12 mil signing bonus per http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/eye-on-college-football/2524185...

My question- when did Adidas become so uncool? They were the Tits McGee in my day.
I was wondering the same thing. Adidas used to be the cool kid in school. Now they seem like the kid that graduated, moved away, and never spoke to anyone ever again.
Since Oregon and Maryland probably
Still have my Samba's lol
My question is why aren't our people trying to become the banner school for an Adidas type company? Hell, if UMD can carry the banner for Under Armor, why can't we for Adidas? I mean I know the founder isn't an alum, but still.
Adidas in the football landscape is bruuutal. the recruits love love love nike. Miami is going to struggle with adidas. For the most part i think Adidas really only succeeds best in soccer.
Doesn't work that way... Malcolm Delaney once tweeted (can't find the tweet anymore, it was 3+ years ago) that he refused to even talk to Louisville coaches because they weren't a Nike school.
You don't see recruits signing up at Maryland because they want to set trends and make under armor cool. Recruits want to go schools that are already cool. Nike is cool. Under Armor is OK. Adidas is struggling.
VT must stick with Nike, unless someone else offers us a preposterous contract.
That's different. High level AAU basketball teams are sponsored by Nike UA etc and then essentially blackmail recruits by saying they'll pull the deal from their AAU team if they choose a college that isn't the same sponsor. That doesn't exist in football
No... It was a string of tweets. The impression I got was that Delaney thought Nike was cooler than everything else, and, if he was good enough to play at a Nike school, why would he bother with an Adidas school? I don't doubt that this happens, but based on the context it was "If the school doesn't have a Nike deal, then it's not cool enough for me to play there." I'll try to dig up the tweets.
If Virginia Tech ever becomes an Adidas school, whoever is running the show should be fired. That branding shi
tp has sailed. Until I am old and gray, I don't see that company gaining ground on Nike or Under Armor, who took the football (hard hitting) spot that Adidas failed to fill.Adidas is a soccer brand in my mind and always will be. Copa Mundials are the shit.
Speaking of classics... my whole childhood consisted of these (um)BROS
Leg for you, I had those in every color since I was a soccer player growing up
I just bought two pairs from Kohls for $10 each.
I heard a big factor in this case was Nike trademarking "maize"...from michigandaily.com
copyrighted a color.. really... wtf
You can't, and they didn't, copyright the actual color ie. the hexadecimal number. They just claimed the term "Maize" for that yellow
This.
Like, holy shit, have you seen the uniforms adidas is putting out?
When they lost Lebron before he played his first NBA game. This propelled Nike so far ahead of Adidas, they have not yet recovered.
Sonny Vaccaro was Adidas 'recruiter' for Lebron. Told Lebron that he was worth just under $10 million in endorsements. Lebron was a huge Adidas lean, had been 'friends' with Sonny for sometime, went to a high school that was sponsored by Adidas, etc. Then when the company actually offered him a deal, it was only $7 million. Nike offered just under $10 mil. Obviously, everyone knows what happened next.
A fanatical Buckeye fan may take a peek on scUM forums to see what they are saying. I don't, but I have this "friend" who does all the time. :)
Of course scUM fans don't know all the factors that would go into a decision like this, but what you hear is frustration over having beat Ohio State twice since 2000 (2-13). One of those wins was in 2011 when OSU was trying to recover from Tattoo-gate and had Luke Fickell as interim coach. Their frustration has led to some pretty curious, superstitious conspiracy theories about the causes of their losing streak. Ohio State is a Nike team. Since scUM went to Adidas, they have been losing. So, it's natural and logical to go back to Nike - even as the lowest bidder. Such is the state of mind of a good chunk of our rival's fans - and maybe the administration!
VT wil never see that kind of money, Mich has everything going for it in terms selling apperal: Huge alumni base, huge state fan base, brand identity, history, cold weather climate (more layers to sell), VT can't match that.
No one said we would. But if the going rate for a blue blood program is 15 mil, I don't see why we wouldn't be able to get to 5 or so, which is more than triple our current rate
Question is will they make Nike Khakis for the Coach?
I think his go-to brand of khakis is Dickies. I'm sure everyone will find a joke in there somewhere.
What's 6 inches long and 2 inches wide and drives women wild? A One Hundred Dollar Bill.
I guess Adidas doesn't have any money left after signing the deal with Man U for $128million a year. And they lost Notre Dame last year to UA.
And let's not forget that Adidas picked up Miami!!!!!
So per year payout in cash is actually not that high.
$5 million per year in cash, plus free uniforms and equipment? That is a lot of money.
Pretty nice to have Adidas and Nike in a bidding war.
Then you have Under Armour/Kevin Plank giving Maryland cash by the barrel-full. It takes a lot of private donations to keep up with those figures. Makes me want to boycott Under Armour. After all, it's just polyester with a UA logo.
They're getting more in cash than FSU is getting in cash and apparel. That's a huge bump.
Is the apparel value stated in retail value or wholesale value?
I'm guessing retail, but the cash part is stated in cash.
Don't know. They always just list it as "supplied apparel"
Edit: Its definitely retail price.
Okay, so there's some inflation of value there, since the actual cost to Nike is materials plus labor, but they get to report the value as if they actually sold all that stuff at retail.
"Also included in the agreement are three student summer internships at Nike headquarters"
I'm not so sure I would want that internship.
*** Removed ***
Are you kidding?
Yes. It clearly states that it is at Nike Headquarters and not a sweatshop. It was a joke.
Of course it is a great internship. Good for Michigan for having that part in the contract. I hope whomever we sign with has a similar provision.

I guess you could say that your attempt at sarcasm bites.
Best Flight of the Conchords song? Maybe.
Keep waiting for that... Jim Weaver signed a long term extension with Nike right before he retired. I think it runs out in something like 2024 or 2025.
Are we still playing ECU then?
That extension was signed by Whit
*plugs fingers in ears* LALALALALALALA I REFUSE TO LISTEN TO ANYTHING THAT EVEN TRIES TO IMPLY WHIT CAN DO ANY WRONG LALALALALALALA
Link for that? I see 2018 everywhere

And with Nike selecting a handful of schools every year, a new deal could come down next year for VT. They are in the process of consolidating our themes across all sports to become more unified, and I believe next year is the year they roll that out for us.
I'm pretty sure that's old, and the extension wasn't publicized, but was confirmed by Whit last year when he came down for a Hokie Club event in the area.
Really?
Do you have a source for that?
I found this: http://www.thekeyplay.com/content/2014/january/23/vts-contract-nike-and-...
In print, no... Just the words from Whit himself at a Hokie Club event I attended last year in Raleigh.
Ah, ok...so #SOURCES
I remember that being reported as well. Can probably find a write-up on TSL.
It might be just the right time for a VT graduate to start a underwear company with a catchy logo.
It's just polyester, after all, but it is clearly downright lucrative.
Put a Gobbler in your pants? ;)
That's more of a motto. I guess the associated logo would be GG, for Gobble-Gobble.
