Also, I dont know if "campy" is the correct word to use, but did that segment seem campy to you guys? Like it was more like they were catering to an old man relishing yesteryear than they were respecting a head coach of a Power 5 football team?

No. Not at all. I think they conducted the interview showing the upmost respect to a living legend who has done everything right and with class when many other programs are doing the oppisite.
Also, I am sure they understand that after 30 years of interviews they are just going to get the same Beamer answers. So why bother.

I guess the reason I felt they were was because all the interjections on their end seemed unnecessary/forced, and the whole time I kept thinking to myself "there's no way they would speak to Nick Saban in this manner."

I do see your point but I think Beamer is in a different class than many other coaches. Especially after watching the behind the seens video. I can't imagine Saben or many other coaches walking around the studio laughing and asking to take pictures with everybody. That attitude demands a different approach from the interviewers.

Anyone that says that Beamer doesn't have the energy required to be HC anymore needs to watch this video. He crushed the whole day of interviews, hand shakes, and appearances all with a great smile and a bounce in his step. I think he easily sees his contract through at least 2016.

dude. Flying is so fast. I know it sounds dumb saying it, but I've gotten to the point where I never think of it that way. I always factor in all the added time of commercial flight (early arrival at airport, delays on tarmac, waiting for luggage, etc). Then you hear someone talk about a chartered flight and you realize just how fast you can get from point A to point B without all that crap.

I recorded 48 hours of footage (12 hours of ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPNNEWS) and skimmed through it all looking for that segment. Pretty much every channel started talking Tom Brady the whole afternoon.

The Lunch Pail has been a symbol of VT football, and local reporters have written about it, and ESPN might mention for a couple of seconds or show a picture as part of a game intro, but it seems like the athletic department is ramping up its promotion to make it a more significant part of Tech's brand.

Not really... I mean, we use it, sure... But not in any real major regard, and I am not sure if we have any trademarks on LPD. With the amount the LP is out and about this year, as opposed to the past, and knowing we apparently have an upcoming rebranding that Nike has already been experimenting with... It does make you wonder.
Also, considering what the LPD represents, I wonder if this isn't a little bit of forward thinking to get a certain brand in place before we begin the process of introducing a certain guy to be our head coach.

actual fact or "this is ridiculous but wouldn't it be funny if it were true so I'm going to post it like it's fact" fact? It's hard to tell in comments, you know.

Perhaps a shift from the association of "BeamerBall" and Virginia Tech to the Lunch Pail. Definitely has been a lot more of it around major media events like ACC Media Days and such.

That is the direction I was seeing too. I mean, many schools and their coaches have something to associate them with the program whether tangible or not. Saban has "the program," Kiffin is the visor, Tressell was the vest, Bear Bryant was the Houndstooth Hat, Mangino was how fat he was, etc. For us that is BeamerBall. Now it seems the path is being paved for the Lunch Pail to ascend to the throne. But I'm probably reading way too far into this.

Personally, I don't think you're reading too much into it. I actually think this might be the likeliest of reasons to why we're starting to see it more and more. Makes you wonder if a decision hasn't already been made behind the scenes.
That said, in my opinion, it would be kind of cool to have a bronze statue of the LP at the entrance (not exit, the entrance where the team goes into the tunnel) for all the players to rub before they enter Lane, signifying them all going to work.

I seriously doubt a decision has been made behind the scenes. There is still football to be played before this group has proven itself capable of taking VT to the next level, and that is the criterion.

I do think a decision has been made that we want Bud no matter what, HC or DC. As such, and with Beamer getting up there in tenure, I could see this as active Bud promotion regardless of a decision having been made, or a decision to be made. Imagine a solid offense focused HQ with bud at the continued helm of the D. That to me sounds championship caliber, and I like to think Bud would be juiced up about it. Maybe I'm wrong.

Our entrance already has the Hokie Stone that everyone slaps as they exit the tunnel. I see where you're going, but they already bring the lunchpail to practices and onto the sideline for every game. I think that's more symbolic, and that part of the branding, that base, is already there.
Apologies for reading all of this days late, and I agree that changing to LP branding is great. BeamerBall has been mostly dead for a few years what with emphasis across the sport on special teams. LPD was for the past 20 years an integral part of Bud's defensive ideology and really the blue collar style of football at VT that really speaks to our fans. If Bud stays past Beamer, the LP might stay past Bud, it's that good of a symbol for this program.

I definitely wouldnt hate that! I'd love to have a big nike swoosh next to my big lunch pail on a t-shirt. That would kill it in sales. I know I'd wear the hell out of it.

I can't find a link to it at the moment, but a few weeks ago the lady and I were in Blacksburg and the bookstore on campus is selling a few shirts with the Lunch Pail and W.I.N. prominently displayed. I think its a reasonable bet they're moving towards using it more.

I don't know if it's still there but at the Applebee's in Radford there's a team picture on the wall and a young Beamer is in it. That's how I found out. I don't know much more about it other than I think he was only there a year or two and he coached under HC Norm Lineberg who is a legend in Va HS football lore.

I agree. Plus he went to the same university my parents went to...Bowling Green. He is a big Ohio State fan, but I won't hold that against him. He has fun doing his job.

I did miss it and I thank you for posting it
He is looking and sounding better every time I see him. Only negative is...this is the skinniest Beamer I have seen.
Segment leads off with the Beamer signature sniff and grunt at 0:01. Love it.
Glad I wasn't the only one that picked up on that, haha.
Also, I dont know if "campy" is the correct word to use, but did that segment seem campy to you guys? Like it was more like they were catering to an old man relishing yesteryear than they were respecting a head coach of a Power 5 football team?
Didn't think that at all.

Very true. I'd say I perfectly demonstrated that many of us easily forget that Beamer is in a class of his own on the college football landscape
He is in a class of his own, I don't think there's another team that has had the sustained 20 success without loads more drama.
Class act.
Here's some behind the scenes from yesterday.
That's a full day!
Good stuff.
Labor Day can't get here soon enough.
Excellent. Shows how much we're trying to push our image out there with this type of exposure, and as usual, Frank is in the vanguard.
Great video, thanks. I have one problem though. Why isn't that plane decked out with VT logos? That needs to be fixed pronto.
Does the school own it or is leased or "timeshared"
I don't know but they showed the license number on the tail and it had VT at the end.
I think that plane belongs to someone on the Board of Visitors and whoever it is allows Coach Beamer and others to use it.
How could a young man not want to play for a coach like Beamer? Down to earth. Hope the future HC is as personable as Beamer.
We can only hope for such class.
I've wondered this as well.
That's why no Rich-Rod
Anyone that says that Beamer doesn't have the energy required to be HC anymore needs to watch this video. He crushed the whole day of interviews, hand shakes, and appearances all with a great smile and a bounce in his step. I think he easily sees his contract through at least 2016.
Well they cut all the clips of him telling underlings to "get the F**k out of my way" /s
DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM!?!
I'm really glad he ran into SVP. Keep him in our corner a bit. Also, that dude is huge! I didnt realize he was as tall as he was
There's something about Scott Van Pelt that makes me think he'd be a hell of a guy to hang around and have a beer with.
Perhaps a subconscious dislike of Tony Romo?
Did I catch a snippet in there with Beamer filming a promo spot for the playoffs?
So are they saying there's a chance?
Coach had quite a busy day, I'm glad to see how much energy he had and how well he was getting around.
I noted the flight to CT was not long, less time than it takes to drive from there to Richmond or Charlotte.
I also noted the time between when he stepped out of the plane and when he arrived in Bristol was surprisingly quick.

Yes, I know but let me put it another way.
It took me 5.5 hours to get from Roanoke to Nags Head.
The family next to us got here in 6 hrs from Connecticut.
Roanoke area is a geographical oddity. It's 5.5 hours from everywhere.
5.5 hours from Myrtle Beach.
if I worked there, I would leave every day with a headache. The lighting on set is harsh!
Love this guy, just classy as always.
Did you, by any chance, get to record College Football Live yesterday? I think frank had a segment in there as well.
They cut in for "breaking news" of the Brady decision and he wasn't on it.
I recorded 48 hours of footage (12 hours of ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPNNEWS) and skimmed through it all looking for that segment. Pretty much every channel started talking Tom Brady the whole afternoon.
Even the 5:30 PM (EST) segment on ESPNU?
I recorded 8am - 8pm EST on those 4 channels.
That's a load of BS. Wonder if it'll be aired at some point.
I would think so. I am going to record it every day until Beamer is featured, then I'll get it on the site for everyone.
One more reason to dislike the pats.
2015: 20th anniversary of the lunch pail and potentially the best defensive unit in recent history. Coincident? I think not
Why do I suddenly get the feeling that the Lunch Pail will be a significant brand focus going forward.
Is it not already?
The Lunch Pail has been a symbol of VT football, and local reporters have written about it, and ESPN might mention for a couple of seconds or show a picture as part of a game intro, but it seems like the athletic department is ramping up its promotion to make it a more significant part of Tech's brand.

Bud has LPD and W.I.N. trademarked.
which means, if Bud leaves, we lose that branding....
That knowledge nugget is not irrelevant

Beamer...BeamerBall...Lunch Pail...Bud
I see what they're doing. #sources

I shouldn't have laughed, but I did. You also left out Golden is the over-sized shirt with the pit stains.
Many are left out. Harbaugh is khakis, Les Miles is eating grass, and Mike London is crying* just to name a few.
*-No really, he's actually crying right now

Same here man, the "Its Time To Go To Work" effect shirt is still my favorite.

at one point the ESPN guy said LunchBox...instead of Lunch Pail
I immediately cringed
A small part of me dies whenever I hear someone refer to it as a LunchBox.
I noticed that Frank seems to be wearing hearing aids in both ears. Did y'all see that??
Probably discrete on-camera headsets so that producers can speak to him like most live broadcast folks wear.
Could be but in both ears???
Just rewatched the video....he does have hearing aids. You can see them when he's checking into the hotel and getting into the car at the beginning.
Well damn, being on the field at Lane for every home game for decades on end would mess anyone's hearing up.
Sitting through 30 years worth of games in Lane Stadium will get after your hearing.
Edit: I should refresh my tab before I post a comment. Leg for you BCH.
Lord knows, watching our offense over the past 10 years or so has taken some miles off the end of my life....
Preach.
Does anybody know which segment Frank talked about his first coaching job at Radford HS?
I had never heard this before and neither had my Dad. Would love to know more.
I don't know if it's still there but at the Applebee's in Radford there's a team picture on the wall and a young Beamer is in it. That's how I found out. I will have to look for that the next I'm in there. Very cool!
Man, I know some of y'all hate ESPN, but I love Jay Crawford. He just always looks like he is having fun.
I agree. Plus he went to the same university my parents went to...Bowling Green. He is a big Ohio State fan, but I won't hold that against him. He has fun doing his job.
That Frankie.... he'll get after yer emotions :) Thank you coach....I love ya! Great interview!
