Melvin Keihn celebrates the Hokies' quick score on the game's opening kickoff after Western Michigan muffed the kick. [Mark Umansky]
The Virginia Tech athletic department confirmed that sophomore defensive end Melvin Keihn is no longer on the Hokies' roster. The 6-1, 211 pound Gilman School (Towson, MD) product competed this spring for a backup defensive end spot. Keihn played in all 13 games last season. He logged 127 plays on special teams and five plays on defense. He had two tackles on the season.

Towson, MD. just sayin'.

I'm gonna need a royalty for that. ;-)
Payment in turkey legs of course

Can't .......keep ......... up......... with .......The tracker
I wish him well and hope he makes to the NFL one day. He is a great kid. That being said, I just can't force myself to pull for the Twerps, I even struggle with pulling for them against UVA.
Our off season defensive attrition summed up in one picture... I know I'm not the only one hoping this is the end of it.

a picture of CJ is more appropriate. Melvin wasn't going to play much outside of ST again.
Yeah wasn't he stuck behind Dadi and Mihota?
Yup they moved a DT (Mihota) to DE and he passed him in the spring. He also has not shown to be able to put on any weight since he's gotten here although he's already strong as a tank.
This is all correct and their is speculation that this has hurt us with Tino Ellis.
Doesn't hurt us with Tino. Different deal there.
May hurt us with Gilman but wasn't exactly a pipeline.
Sorry to see him leave - seemed like a likable guy (except for Reavis, Shai...Dblock...etc).
Wasn't going to be a difference maker for VT. Maybe at MD.
Seemed like a good kid, but at least in our system, he was a tweener.
too bad, I had hoped he would have a great career that might open up more doors to Gilman.
same and his dad/guardian whatever the relationship was the HC of gilman. Not sure how this will impact us.
Who isn't a tweener in the VT defensive system?
(And I don't mean that in a bad way...)
In our system, he's a tweener. he's not big enough to play DE for VT and doesn't possess the quickness/sideline to sideline speed necessary for the fits in Foster's system. In our system, he's a tweener.
But he might be a perfect MLB in someone else's system. Yes, our system is perfect for traditional tweeners, but he may not be a traditional tweener. He may be a traditional Mike or Backer, but he's not that here.
he would be an OLB if anything not a MLB for Maryland.
A perfect MLB is someone else's system? Like where...JMU? He 6'1 211lbs (at best).
I wish him the best, but unless he can put on 20+ lbs, he's a tweener in pretty much any power 5 program's system. Too small for inside linebacker; not skilled enough in coverage for OLB or Rover; too small for DE. He's likely to encounter the same challenges at any major program. If he couldn't find a role in a defense designed (and effectively at that) to make the most of tweeners, it probably isn't going to happen anywhere.
He was perfect for special teams though.
Reavis is in the picture...
And I've said it before because my momma used to say it to me, if somebody doesn't love you, then the hell with them. Their loss. I bear him no ill will, however, and hope going home works out for him, but the last thing you need on a team is someone who doesn't want to be there, for whatever reason.
Opening up more scholies for the diamond in the rough walk-ons. Next man up!
oh no, he was another MD prospect...I wanted to see him succeed
Dammit, Andy.
Ouch. At least he did look well put together in the uni. Not Xavier Adibi put together, but better than most.
More transferred players who have already kissed the Cup than LOLUVa fans at their Spring Game?
More current UVA players have kissed the cup than there were fans at their Spring Game.
this cup?
That is the only cup that UVA regularly gets to touch.
I'd love to read the instructions that go with this "wikihow" picture
Found this to be interesting, makes sense from what we've been hearing with the CJ Reavis thing.
would be interesting as to why he would go after CJ?? different positions so maybe he just couldn't handle the dork magic that CJ had
I must be
gettingold...other than the "good" part I suppose, I don't have a clue what that means. It is basically saying someone ratted out one of their own.
basically could have called melvin a rat for what he did/did not do to reavis...
No idea if it has any truth but that's his 2nd tweet about the reavis issue.
I had mentioned along with someone else on here that there was a rumor (#sauces) that Keihn provided some type of information that hurt CJ with the whole hearing thing and just generally didn't get along with anyone. The tweet essentially is calling "someone" a sneak or a rat.
Yeah, but it's Shai McKenzie calling someone a rat. So....I choose rat.
I don't necessarily agree with him here, but let's not downvote the guy.
And cds7c - you might want to tone yourself down too.
The entire situation sucks for all parties involved. Especially if this story has played out like you suggest. We lose Melvin who I think is a genuinely nice person that probably thought he was doing the right thing. Plus we lose CJ who in addition to being a great player was a great Hokie that loved the school. It's tough for me to swallow the fact that the student council is capable of removing someone that wants to be a Hokie from the school entirely, regardless of whether or not the student is an athlete. And finally the team suffers because it undermines the ideology of being a family that is often portrayed.
I wish the best to all parties involved but as an alumni I worry that the problem has as much to do with the institution as it does the football team.
It doesn't really undermine the family aspect. Every Family has problems. Whether it is blood kin or athletic family. Show me a "family" that has no problems, and I will show you a family that is great at hiding problems.
Valid point.
In some ways it helps the family aspect. If he wasn't liked or didn't fit in and left then it could make the guys left closer. From what I've read on MK he seemed like a good kid and had a really interesting story behind him. If he did what he felt was right and the team didn't like it then this ends up being the best for everyone. As Shakespeare wrote "this above all, to thine own self be true" and maybe that's what all the parties involved are doing.
TKP. Where Shakespeare is used to help impart football life lessons. Approved.
I don't think that's true. IF you're family, you accept family regardless of how different they are. If you can't fit in, it's more like a club / frat mentality than family.
But yes, to thine own self be true -- but if "family" doesn't like it, then you have to question if they truly were your family in the first place.
Well truth be told I've always thought of the team as more of a club or fraternity anyway. If they didn't think he was fighting with them, or worse yet, was fighting against them I don't see that being good for the team.
Ted Mosby?
Yes, I'm the sex architect.
Don't ever rat on your friends and always keep your mouth shut.
Nope Nope nope! This is why so many crimes take so long to solve. You know someone has committed a crime speak up.
Agreed, when it comes to someone breaking the law
But from all accounts, it doesn't sound like Reavis broke the law here.
Actually from my interpretation of what's been said publicly (particularly by Reavis' lawyer), he very well may have broken a law, but either the evidence was too flimsy or the offense too minor for a prosecutor to bother with pursuing it.
One would think if it was that 'flimsy' or 'minor' that CJ would still be a Hokie, the whole thing makes no sense
Hence the issue...
Tell that to the CO during an NJP hearing. (captain's mast)
You don't know what happened, so I wouldn't be so sure about that just yet.
So someone else can decide a fitting punishment?
If this were a victemless crime its horrible. Travis did something, got kicked out. Kleihn possibly threw gas in a fire, gotta live with the repercussions of those decisions too
He was a good fella. Jimmy the Gent.
Finally someone got the reference
Because I am old? Is that what you are saying? Because I have kids and life is different and I am watching the Reds kick the shit out of the Pirates drinking Kentucky bourbon barrel ale at great American ball park. Ian funny like a clown? I f@$&in amuse you like a clown!?
Dang, man, that's some serious multitasking. Leg up to ya.
Now go home and get your F$@#&$@#$ shine box
I appreciate Shai giving piece of mind and of course I like the info as a fan, but honestly Shai needs to concentrate on keeping his head down, nose clean, knee better to play some damn football and not get involved in any more extracurricular drama.
It's strange, I'm glad it came out but I'm also not. He's really the last person that should be commenting on other people's situations. There's no need for him to air the team's dirty laundry out for the world to see on social media.
agree 1000%
Trust me, you really don't want to know. It's the old "Do you want to watch the sausage being made?" analogy.
I have real inside sources on the extra-curricular of the team starting from around 1998. I stopped inquiring after the 2008 season. I just don't want to know. I want to know who's hurt, and who's starting... that's about it.
I take comfort in the fact that Coach Beamer really does try to run a clean program, especially after the 2006 season. Those boys are in pretty good hands, considering what else is out there managing college football.
I saw plenty first hand during my time in Sacksburg. I have a fair understanding of what the boys get up to. In Shai's case he just needs to put the blinders on and go tunnel vision.
Very True. Me too & as a matter of fact, Any hokie from circa 1995 - circa 2006 has at least football player related "story"...
I was standing next to Cornell Brown in Owens in 1993 the Sunday after a home football game. He handed the cashier a special swipe card and she gave him $200 in cash back. He left and I asked her what that was. She said they all have a card to pay for meals for game weekends, but everywhere they go is catered so they don't need to spend any money off that card. They just come in and cash them out. Needed to keep more cash on hand that day to pay for it. Maybe he was hosting a recruit or something.
Did you say tunnel vision?
Uh, whats wrong with watching sausage being made?
I was going to say something about packaging the meat, but children read this site.
Stuffin sausage is a way of life for some
Guy is still stuck in his house, he probably has some kind of cabin fever. When did he start serving his arrest on the 14th?
I read he completed it yesterday
Live by the Bud, Die by the Bud.
You mean Foster, right?
Right. His system, specifically. MK, despite his huge talent, doesn't seem to fit it. Fans love getting the big time recruits, but this is a perfect example of a why, despite all the success, Bud's system is a real negative in recruiting for some positions.
I don't sweat it, personally. His record over the years speaks louder than any belly aching over high star recruit misses on the defensive side of the ball.
This is just not correct. VT's system isn't the issue here. Keihn is going to struggle in any system at a power 5 level. If it's a negative in recruiting, it's partially because people on chat boards keep repeating the mantra even though it's not true.
VT's defensive system is designed to make the best of the type of athletes that VT is frequently going to get...either the "a little too small, but athletic" or the "not athletically great, but good size" (and VT usually errs on the side of small, but athletic...with the not athletically great, but good size seeming to often move to offense).
However Bud Foster has shown the ability to adapt to not just offensive scheme evolution, but to the relative individual strengths and weaknesses of the best players on his defensive roster. There is no reason that kids with ideal size and athleticism for positions can't excel in the VT defensive system.
*staff meeting today*
any coach: "Why is Shai saying words, didn't we tell him to not say any words?"
I guess you could say Keihn...
...just wasn't Able.
(too soon?)
You could almost break that into two separate posts.
Eventhough he wasnt going to play on defense, he would have added athleticism to special teams that is needed. Is a loss for this team, especially when combined with Reavis.
Best post of the thread. I didn't even think to mention the impact on special teams. Reavis and Keihn were two of the principle young lions (athletic guys who can run and tackle) that made the Hokies punt and kick off coverage so so so much better this season. It was a far cry from watching Christian Jones and Will Lively lolly gag into the end zone on punts and kickoff returns in 2013.
Listen, I threw the ST Jinx out there weeks ago. That is how Karma came back around today. Now all the boys have to do is keep working hard and be hungry. Mook will be the next great gunner.
Mook has been working at returner with Stroman. Frank hates not fielding punts, so he drops two back and the off returner sets the block toward the return. With regards to who would have been a greater impact on ST Melvin or CJ?
CJ hands down. He was personally responsible for the firing of three slots on the Pride (Punt) team this spring because he was blocking so many punts. Also let it be known, without CJ, we might not have escaped UVA. Melvin who? I miss CJ.

Lollygag
So I take he ratted out Revis and left the team...
All speculation btw
Getting real tired of your shit offseason!!!
Friggin soap opera man
Seen so many comments like this on 11W. Offseason is a cold hearted bitch.
My #sauces inside the athletic dept tell me this may have something to do with CJ's dismissal and more importantly the role Melvin may have played in the hearing as a witness or some kind of evidence he produced against CJ. Some players are not happy about it and Melvin didn't see himself as welcome back into the locker room.
.
I don't want to speculate in writing what the possible transgression was, because that if incorrect is not fair to anyone involved, but the scenario described with Melvin, CJ and the hearing seems to be accurate.
Assuming MK said the truth - it would be cold of our team to turn their back on him as such. Not his fault if Shai messed up. Hell, I wouldn't lie for anyone if I was put on the stand either!
I understand and agree with your logic about MK speaking the truth. However, I will wait until more facts become public to have a much more serious discussion on whether or not someone who thinks they know the truth (MK or possibly the "victim" in this case) being able to then take away another person's ability to attend college, while an ACTUAL court chooses not to press criminal charges due to a lack of evidence to get to the actual truth of what occurred. If what I've been told is true about the facts of this case, I have a serious problem with the way VT handled it.
Disclaimer: As someone who went through a hearing with the Student Conduct Committee, I have a bias toward the "Kangaroo Courtness" that a hearing can feel like with regard to a young person's future. In other words, I am self aware that my opinion may be incorrect or clouded.
I guess we'll see at some point - if the knowledge becomes public.
I think it somewhat depends on what Reavis did and whether his shenanigans were cheeky and fun or sad and tragic.
EVIL SHENANIGANS!!!
Glad someone knew where I was going with that.
Wowza.
Sand through the hourglass... These are the days of our offseason
Offseason a bi-atch, ain't it?
Maybe CBS saw all this coming?
[hrschoolhouse & pmcdeadline]
Wow, that didn't take long - MK to Maryland???????
From the looks of his Twitter feed, yep.
I prefer to think of it as Randy Edsall's used car lot.
From his twitter, this was decided before he left.
So...does he sit or play?
So let me get this straight... he rats out a teammate, provides the school the damning evidence that gets the kid expelled, and within a week he's enrolling at Maryland?
Yeah, sorry... this sounds shady as fuck.
sounds like he really didn't like Reavis.. maybe Reavis ratted MK out that he wanted to go to Maryland and wasn't committed to the team and MK decided to completely screw Reavis over.
Leaving a school and going to another school doesn't happen over night, it takes awhile to figure everything out. This definitely sounds like a I might as well mess as much up before I leave..
Also might explain why Turk said what he said after the appeal got denied. You're going to listen to a kid that is leaving the school and has a poor/crummy attitude. from what I've heard MK didn't fit in well int he locker room and on the field
would love for the facts to come out so we can really see/understand what happened.. sadly doubt that happens
