Dahman McKinnon returns to the Hokie football program

Linebacker Dahman McKinnon, who left the Hokie football program after the military bowl, has apparently rejoined the program. Hokiesports.com has opened a page for McKinnon and Andy Bitter posted a story about McKinnon on the Roanoke Times blog.

On the side of caution, I would like to note that I don't see McKinnon's name on the actual roster page. McKinnon, who is listed as number 35 on his profile, is not listed, however Carson Wise (who it was announced was leaving the program) and walk-on whip linebacker Quinton Taylor are both listed as #35. I am sure there will be more updates coming.

The 2013 Bama game should serve as a reminder that there is no such thing as too many athletic backups. To quote Shane Beamer, "don't put walkons on your coverage teams."

Yeah that comment made me sick. Uhh Shane, you are playing Ala freaking Bama! Minimize the walk ons. The truth was our depth was non existent.

McKinnon was on there briefly. I asked VT about it. They said he's back on the team.

Not sure why they've edited it again.

Thanks Andy. I didn't see a tweet from them. I found his profile and it was updated on august 5th. He just wasn't on the roster page. Of course, if Wise is leaving, that could mean that Taylor (who is a walk-on) could be on his way out since he also a defensive player.

I just want answers as to how this assures victory over Ohio State.

Dahmon McKinnon has never lost to
Ohio State. Ever.

And it's now "38-0, bro." Perfect.

what is greater, the number of VT football players who have lost to anOSU or fans at the LOLUVa spring game?

Andy's article mentions that he weighed in at 221. If that's good weight, could he be an option at Mike?

Yeah I would say it's good weight

Looks like he took his time away from the team seriously.

If he kept his speed it's going to be ridiculous.

Looks like his legs are still skinny in relation to his upper body. (skinny legs = fast legs)

Or no calves...

Feel like this is a good time to point out that this is the guy who clocked the fastest 40 on the team during 2013 winter testing.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

His uncle posted on Facebook that he also set the linebacker bench press record this summer.

Two years ago he had a listed max of 385, so it's possible. Doesn't seem like they updated their site if he did though.

Now let's get to some football!

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Does anyone recall why he left the program? Glad to have him return!

no reason was ever given that I recall, which probably means violation of team rules of some kind.

Might have also been injury related, but he's obviously been working out like crazy so I think the chances of that are low.

If it's violation of team rules, that's a dismissal, and almost always announced. All I remember is McKinnon just leaving the program. Might have been a Josh Standford soul-searching type situation with a better outcome.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

Could've been a "informal suspension" type deal like when Corey Marshall "left the program to deal with personal matters" for a year.

IMO the reason isn't that important. He wanted to come back and the coaches/team wanted him back. Good.

Judging by the selfie posted here, I think we can all agree his "leaving the team" was a smokescreen for him to go through S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Super Soldier Serum program.

I was nineteen once and got lost, and kind of stayed there. I'm happy for him that he has found his way back and hope he can look back and know he made the right decision. Seems he has an uncle who is a positive influence. Hats off to him too.

Go Dahman! Go Hokies!

Football was obviously interfering with his time in the gym.

Maybe because he already lifted all of the Hokie weights, and he took a sabbatical to search for more?

I like how we got "Dahman" in the LB corps... and "L'homme" on the D-line. All we need is "El Hombre" in the secondary.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I seem to remember Bud Foster talking very highly of him in the offseason when he was on the team. D-mac I think was his nickname. I'm curious what the circumstances of his exit and return are. But as we always say, minor setback for a major comeback!

He's no good to me dead.

Going to be honest, I didn't even realize he left. Glad to have him back though.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

If his on-field ability is anything like his weightroom work, Bud may have taken care of the LB concern. Wow.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

I remember him leaving, he's a big dude, I met him at the fan meet n greet last year. Glad to see he's back, and obviously in shape and ready. Linebacker being thin, another old, extremely athletic guy in there is awesome

In addition too whatever occurred this time, he was charged with felony hit and run, driving without insurance, failure to obey a traffic sign in '13. Mr. Turk represented a m and he was charged with a misdemeanor with a $100 fine.... I imagine he didn't or doesn't have much room to mess up.

He should be a real help on special teams if nothing else. Can run and tackle, something we need with Keihn and Reavis gone.

McKinnon made at least two nice tackles against Ohio State in the open field on the punt team. One of them had to be re done because of penalty, but was a nice tackle. Looked to hit pretty hard too and wrap up. He will see the field and is a welcome addition.

That was my first thought was another solid special teams guy and linebacker depth. If, he has returned this time with his life together he will be an asset.

Can he play rover?
