Editor's Note: Throughout the season Kevin Weiss will contribute practice and game reports to TKP. Kevin hosts The Drive with Kevin Weiss on ESPN Blacksburg 1430 AM / 94.1 FM. — Joe
On Friday, I attended the Hokies' first practice (or the portion media was able to see anyway). I jotted down as many notes and observations as I could before the buzzer rang and us media folks were escorted out of the Beamer Barn.
Without further ado...
Observations and Other Nuggets
There was a lot of energy, passion and enthusiasm from the players and coaches even when they were going through basic stretching and warm-ups. There was definitely a sense of urgency all around. Speaking of urgency, linebackers coach Cornell Brown was CONSTANTLY calling out Whip/ROLB Ronny Vandyke during warm-ups.
Before practice began, Michael Vick (who was decked in Tech gear from head to toe) made a fantastic speech to the team and sent a great message.
He pointed out to the team that playing football and getting a free education is an opportunity of a lifetime and to not take it for granted. Vick also talked about the importance of being disciplined and having the fortitude to listen to coaches.
I spent a considerable amount of time watching the quarterbacks and the offense in general. Here were some things I noticed:
- Freshman QB Dwayne Lawson is a GROWN-MAN. He looks like a 28-year-old man in that No.2 non-contact jersey. Offensive Coordinator Scot Loeffler was critical of his exchanges to the RBs, saying Lawson was taking too many steps before making the handoff.
- On a couple of run-throughs on offense, J.C. Coleman was aligned as a wide receiver, with Travon McMillian or Trey Edmunds in at running back.
- The QBs worked on throwing quick hitches and post routes to the tight ends inside the 20-yard line. All of the quarterbacks overthrew their target at multiple times on the post routes in the end zone. They fared much better on the hitches.
I was able to sneak a few peaks of the scrimmage. One play that stood out in my mind was a beautiful completion by QB Michael Brewer to WR Cam Phillips down the field. Brewer eluded pressure, stepped up in the pocket and soared a pass right on the money to Phillips between the hash marks for what would have been a 40-yard completion.
Punter A.J. Hughes was ABSOLUTELY CRUSHING punts outdoors. The height and hang time was considerable and should bode well for the coverage teams in being able to get downfield make plays.
Player Quotes
DT COREY MARSHALL
ON THE FIRST DAY OF PRACTICE:
"We're just working on getting back to basics. Coach (Bud) Foster wanted to stress the fundamentals and that's what we're trying to get after. Nothing too complex. Just getting the young guys involved and getting a lot of reps.
ON THE BENEFITS OF HAVING A TALENTED DEFENSIVE LINE
"I think it's a great thing to have. Schematically, (opponents) can't double anybody on the line. You take a lot of your offense away when you start bringing in tight ends and running back to block. So, it really kind of nutmegs them down and gives us free range to attack."
ON THE NEWCOMERS ON DEFENSE AND IF ANYBODY STOOD OUT:
"I think Tim Settle had a good day. He's got a great first step. He's got a good counter-move and swings his hands through pretty good. Just starting off, their heads are spinning. The biggest thing is not to let the playbook tie up your feet and they're doing a good job of that. They're catching everything a lot faster than I did at that age, so that's a good sign. They just got to keep plugging along.
DT Luther Maddy
ON GETTING BACK TO PRACTICES:
"I'm real eager. It's been eight months since I put on pads, so it was real fun being out there with my teammates. I had a good time with it."
ON HOW GOOD THE DEFENSE CAN BE THIS SEASON:
"Today (Friday) was one of the best first practices I've seen since I've been here. Usually first days start off pretty slow, but both sides of the ball were playing fast. We picked up where we left off in the spring, so everybody was playing fast today. It was a great first day."
ON THE POTENTIAL OF THE DEFENSIVE LINE AND HOW GOOD IT CAN BE:
"We're good, but we can be better. That's how we look at it. We're not satisfied. Coach (Charley) Wiles is making sure that we're not just sitting around and being satisfied with where we're at. We're taking every rep we can, every technique and every coaching point from coach Wiles seriously and trying to apply it to our game."
ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF DADI NICOLAS FROM HIS FRESHMAN YEAR TO SENIOR YEAR:
"It's crazy. I've seen his growth every year and he's gotten better every year since I've seen him in his senior year in high school. It's crazy. It's great on his part to be able to take coaching and evolve like that. It's not easy to not play football (Nicolas played one year of high school football) and come in and do the things he's doing. It really shows his character and dedication to the game too."
RB J.C. COLEMAN
ON THE FIRST DAY OF PRACTICE:
"It was very exciting. Guys are really fired up and amped up. It's just exciting to be out there."
ON BUILDING OFF THE END OF LAST SEASON:
"It's probably the most excited I've been in my entire life heading into a football season. I'm just ready to step off right where I landed last year and keep going forward."
ON PROVING THE COACHES THAT HE CAN BE AN EVERY-DOWN BACK:
"I might be smaller and weight a little bit less, but I think I'm one of the strongest people pound-for-pound on the team. That's something I take pride in and I can take the beating. I don't take a lot of hard hits because I'm real shifty and everything."
ON THE RUNNING BACK ROTATION OVERALL:
"I think the coaches have talked about having two and maybe a third guy. I think that's the way to go when you start talking about running backs. Guys have got to get into a groove and get going."
ON THE RETURN OF SHAI MCKENZIE AND IF HE'S READY TO BE BACK IN THE MIX:
"Right now, he's got to get his stamina back. He was a little tired out there. As far as running the ball, he has that natural ability with his cuts. He's a powerful guy and when he gets the pads on, he's going to cause some problems. He looked good out there."
WR ISAIAH FORD
ON HOW THE FIRST DAY OF PRACTICE WENT OVERALL:
"It went pretty well. We're just getting back used to it, so we're going to have some mishaps, but overall I think we had a really good first day."
ON HAVING THE CONSISTENCY OF A RETURNING QB IN MICHAEL BREWER:
"Me and Brewer have probably spent every day this summer together either watching film or running routes. Me and (Brewer's) chemistry went through the roof compared to last year, so I think it's going to look like night and day."
ON WHAT HE WORKED ON IN THE OFFSEASON TO IMPROVE HIS GAME:
"I worked on putting on muscle. Last year, I played at 174 (pounds). I really wanted to take it serious and get in the weight room and get bigger and stronger and faster. I'm up to 190 now and I think I'm down to four percent body fat. I feel faster than I ever have, so I'm pretty excited about that."
ON IF ADDING EXTRA WEIGHT WILL HELP HIM IN BLOCKING:
"I think it's going to help me in every aspect of playing the receiver position. Blocking is a big part of it, so I think it's going to help a lot. And when I get bumped, I'm going to be able to fight with my hands, take the bumps and dish some out as well."
OL WYATT TELLER
ON LINEMAN IN THE NFL THAT HE WATCHES:
"Obviously, the main guys. Jake Long and all those guys. We watch a lot of NFL game film. Basically, we just watch a lot of NFL offensive lines. Like the Dallas' (Cowboys) tenacity. Same with the (New England) Patriots. They're a mean offensive line and we like that. We watch film of them and we try to idolize them."
ON IF THE OFFENSIVE LINE HAS ADDED A SENSE OF TOUGHNESS AND TENACITY:
"Well, we used to go downhill running and then we got to this wide-zone and mid-zone kind of stuff. That kind of changed up how our mentality was, I guess. Now, we're back to downhill running and moving the rock, I think that's a huge part of why we have that new discovered toughness and meanness about us."
ON THE COHESIVENESS OF THE OFFENSIVE LINE AND HOW HE FEELS ABOUT THIS YEAR'S UNIT:
"Every day, we've got to get better. Right now, we're subpar and we need to be great. Each day if we gain that two percent, then by game day it's going to be a good offensive line and I'm excited about it."

Comments
Fantastic piece, Kevin, with a lot of great quotes. But put me a little knowledge... Nutmeg???
The phrase means kicking the ball between someone's legs in soccer -- I'm not getting the context in American football, but I'm guessing the effect is something like this:
Yeah, I was surprised he used that wording too. I think he was meaning to limit or hold back offenses...not sure where he came up with that term in its place.
Nutmeg is a ground spice, so I'm assuming it's somehow associated with "grinding down" or wearing them out. Would be interesting to hear the genesis of that phrase for real, though.
I always thought the soccer version of the term was a reference to the ball going under the opposing player's "nuts". Then again, I was 12 when I learned the word.
let's consult the source of all knowledge
Maybe I'm missing it, but they listed all those countries and didn't list what the Americans call it.
It's only ground if one grinds it...it grows in nut form and can then be grated (or "ground") as needed. "Nutmegs" can refer to testicles and thus the origin of the soccer idiom, but nothing as related to his comment. I think Cory was searching for a different word.
That's my purse!!
I love that episode! Bobby Hill is probably one of my fav
cartoon characters.
I DON'T KNOW YOU!
Nutmeg is commonly used on hot coco and egg nog. both drinks occur only in winter time. So he's alluding to the fact that we will be playing for the national championship.
Don't nutmeg me, bro.
Boy, our coverage of events this year is hitting a new level.
Thanks for the read. I appreciate the optimism from the players, however I also appreciate the honest perspective from Teller. Subpar? Either he is very humble, or playing a bit of coach-speak himself. However, he may just be spot-on. His comments do correlate with Beamers at media days, when he stated the O-line was the group that needed to step up the most. Let's hope all those bowling trips, dinners at Taco Bell and time in the film room create a cohesive unit. We really need Hansen and Gallo to play technically sound ball, considering their inexperience. Man, the possibilities...it's an exciting time!
I love that mindset, "every day we need to get 2% better." That says so many things. It's always within your reach, but it's something you have to work for every day. If you're not improving you're going backward. But you don't have to work miracles, you don't have to be something you're not. You just have to get a little better every day. I love it.
*salivates*
I was gonna use the same quote. Its really encouraging to hear how hard these guys work on their own time. It really increases my level of respect for them. These are the kinds of things angry doom and gloomers need to be reminded of when calling for players heads during the season. You know, the kind that boo when a player takes the field. Man that pisses me off.
If night is 709 yards and 6 TDs, I can't wait to see what day is.
I think it starts with "B" and ends with "-iletnikoff."
Damn. I'm not good at these riddles. I wonder what it could be.
Helicopter? I think it's helicopter.
It's pronounced "Kevin."
Can someone tell me how Fall camp works these days? Do they get so many days/hours per day on the field which includes/does not include meeting time?
Well it looks like I have graduated from first class passenger on the hype train to engineer. We need moar Coal(e)!
I'm late getting on the train, but I'd like to work my way up to first class as quickly as possible! You're right, we do need more Coal(e)!
Good coverage, thanks. I like hearing about the intensity.
(side note for Joe - auto running ad is making my browser jump round or freeze up again - some kind of fashion, top motor head, some kind of tea; I'm on the new Edge browser today)
I don't know how handy with html you are, but one way around it is to pull up the html (in chrome you can right click-inspect element), find the image or container for the ad, and delete it. Not ideal, but a decent work-around.
"NO, RONNY, IT'S WHIP" ~ Cornell Brown, probably
Hahahaha. I was gonna post this.
Wonder how many times he's said "Tweedy" accidentally.
Welcome aboard and good read. Damn you for giving more hype to Lawson, the first Brewer int people will be calling for the switch!
He's gotta learn the fundamentals before that can happen. Needless to say, when Lefty thinks he's ready to go in, I'm going to be screaming like a school girl with excitement. Until then, I'll trust Lefty on this one.
The media coverage (on this site) of this year's preseason has been stellar.
I'm really enjoying these articles, so keep up the good work.
There were 2 more days of practice!! Where are my other 2 articles!?!?!?
/s
Great review of a practice.
Unfortunately we're at the mercy of Virginia Tech. If every practice was open to the media, someone from TKP would be there to cover it. The next media availability is 8/14 for media day.
unacceptable joe. Hire this kid and keep the content coming /s
Is it overly selfish to secretly hope that MV7 doesn't get picked up by a NFL team this year, so that our Athletic Dept can do what it takes to ensure he's on our sideline every weekend, and taking part in as many Athletic fundraisers as possible?
I mean, imagine if we had Bruce Smith, Mike Vick, Kevin Jones, and whoever else wants to join on the sidelines every weekend? Imagine if we had those guys meeting whichever recruit decided to visit on a given weekend? It gives us immediate credibility in the eyes of any recruit who's there to experience.
we'd have more former players on our sidelines than OSU and UVA combined!!!!
Since no one else stated the obvious, here goes. We'd have more former players on our sidelines than fans at UVA's home opener.
Fixed it
So is ML going to start the other guy?
I believe that's as we call it a good 'Le Zing'
Is there another guy? They keep leaving so fast I lose track.
Why
stink up this thread with UVa stuffbring up UVa in this perfectly good thread?I have a feeling this was supposed to go in the ACC power rankings thread??
I was TKPing too hard and had more than one window open. My B
FTFY
are you kidding me?!
their schedule is going to make it tough to get to three wins...this team has historically waaay under-produced for the 'talent' that they apparently have (though I'm not sure 3 or 4 5* athletes grouped in with a plethora of 2* athletes constitutes as a 'talented' team..but I'm not an expert) and their schedule is pretty brutal...
I honestly am not sure which will be higher..the number of Wins VT has this season, or the number of Losses UVa has....it could be close
THIS. remember having lolUVA on your schedule is a 99.9% win ratio, so for lolUVA it's the inverse. I'm betting they get 3 wins.
Was A.J. Hughes injured last year?
Yes. He had some pretty serious back issue that required offseason surgery and he missed the spring. By all accounts, he's all better now.
#punterswag
The bionic implant they put in his back during surgery gives him an extra 10 yards on every kick #sources
Now that you mention it, a LOT of our players had surgery in the off season..

Coincidence?
Every time he trots onto the field I say it out loud:
Thank God for A J Hughes.
4th down QB
Looks like this is from the first day, a bit of behind-the-scenes with Shane. Gotta love his energy, if nothing else. Looks like there's also punishment when anyone fumbles.
Huge fan of Shane, he is going to be a great HC one day. Maybe not at Tech but somewhere.
Did anyone else get mic'ed up?
If only Shane... Hmmmmm
Word has it that they put a mic on Bud, but it melted.
If I haven't forgot Bud has refused to be mic'd up for multiple reasons.
And whoever operates the censoring beeper doesn't want carpal tunnel again.
Did George Carlin perform a standup routine based on those reasons?
I've finally heard the best coaching advice I ever received, being coached.
Maximize your reps.
Funny...he uses many of same exact expressions and mannerisms as his dad. I guess we all are our father's son in at least some ways.
I guess when your dad is the winningest active coach in D1, you don't have to look far for role models.
Man I am super excited to see McMillian this fall. I don't think I've read anything negative about him. Always praise. Looked good in the spring game from what I recall as well. I don't know how many touches he'll get against OSU but I bet he gets a good work out in the Furman game where we really see what he is capable of.
Really interested in seeing JC line up in the slot. Could be a potential fix if no 3rd WR steps up. Having him or McMillan lineup in the backfield and then motion them out to the slot could create a lot of mismatches and 1 on 1 situations with linebackers. I think we have the depth at running back (knocking on wood) to do it. Excited to see what the offense can do this year.
name to watch out for is Greg Stroman.. hearing he has lined up in slot a lot already and if he continues down the path he will push for time as well.
I love all these indicators that we can shift into multiple alignments without changing personnel. That's one of the things about Lefty's system I was hoping to see last year, that I guess got sidetracked by the injuries and other struggles. I just love the idea of the opposing defense knowing which 11 guys are on the field but having no idea what formation we're going to run.
Yep-I would like to think we have gotten light-years away from the predictability of the offense and the tells that seemingly other teams knew and were able to key on and defend. (I'm looking at you, Clemson/Pearman)
I'm a little concerned about "coach Cornell Brown was CONSTANTLY calling out Whip/ROLB Ronny Vandyke during warm-ups". Is this a good thing or a bad thing. Sounds bad to me and I would be interested to know if there is additional information regarding RVD?
Are we talking about practice? Practice? Not the game, not the game... We talking about practice?!
Sounds like Cornell is trying to push him and make sure he's doing his part to lead the team properly. Also, Brown is one of the loudest guys on the field on a normal day anyways, and he's only got one guy to yell at really.
When you're only technically coaching two scholarship players, who else are you gonna yell at?
Edit: Looks like TechHokie13 beat me to it.
not to rain on your parade, but Coach Brown also assists Wiles with the DE's
Haha, I'm well aware. 'Twas a joke.
I wouldn't worry too much about it. It sounded to me as if he was just trying to light a fire under his butt. Hopefully RVD is the type of player that responds to that...some guys shrink in this type of situation. So to answer your question, it really depends on RVD's personality and what makes him "tick."
I was an athlete growing up. Not much of a self-motivator now. I wish I had someone following me around, lighting a fire under my butt. Besides my wife.
Eat some beans and carry a lighter
I LOVE hearing that the team is hungry and has a sense of urgency. No one seems to be content. THAT'S what I'm talkin about!!!!
I don't know why they wouldn't be content, I mean #missionaccomplished /s
A little OT, but my wife is having a baby. Bringing a Hokie into the world.
Congratulations!
Just fantastic!
Congratulations sir! The more the merrier.
7lb boy. GO HOKIES!!!
Congrats!!
GREAT SUCCESS!!!
mazel tov!
When is day 2? Its been like a week since day 1
I believe the next practice open to the media is August 14th...
Today is practice day 4, just no media at other days.
