Sergio Render Wants to Become a Professional Angler

BeameBall.com spoke with former Tech offensive lineman Sergio Render (http://www.beamerball.com/free/news.htm). Render returned to Blacksburg after pursuing an NFL career and a stint as a police officer. His current goal is to become a pro fisherman, and I figured I'd share because fishing is relevant to many TKPers.

BeamerBall.com: That doesn't surprise me one bit. Anybody who's spent any time around you knows being outdoors is your thing. I also know that you don't just talk about becoming a pro angler, you're also taking the appropriate steps.

Sergio Render: I am. I've been very serious about it over the last couple of years and have been fishing in the FLW (Fishing League Worldwide). This past year, out of 150, I made the Top-40 and qualified for the regionals and got a chance to fish the tournament in Jacksonville, Fl. So, just to show you how serious I am about it, I finished class, drove all the way to Jacksonville to fish the tournament and back in time for class. Right now, I was 3rd in my division out of 151 guys, but I had a bad tournament and dropped to 27th. So, I need to have a good outing in the next tournament and hopefully I'll qualify for the regionals again. The goal is to finish in the top 6 and that would make me an All American and really get my name out there even further.

The entire, brief Q&A is worth the read. Also, Sergio Render on a horse.

but some of that stuff you're exposed to can really have a negative impact on you. I found that my outlook was becoming negative and day in and day out I was surrounded by these murders, rapists, con-men and thieves and I simply told myself that there were other ways to make a living. The final straw was when this inmate, literally saved his urine and feces in a cup, and threw it on me. I mean it went all over me.

Been there done that have the t shirt, I hated having to go into the jail. That is a big man to do that to.

Not gonna lie, I though he was referring to his NFL career.

OHHHHHHH!

Strong Horse.

If that horse ever gets tired it's nice to know that Sergio can carry him on his back for a couple of miles to spell him.

#BASSFISHINGRANGS!

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

That horse looks like it just isn't having any in that photo.

He is a rather large boy, probably a bit more than twice the size of the100# or so girls that normally ride it...

Thanks. I was a little worried. We had to bring in Gentry to prepare him for Sergio's visit.

Only met Sergio once, before his senior year, he was fishing a "tournament" on the New River out of Whitethorne. He was a really nice guy and was obviously quite serious about his fishing. Seemed much more interested in jerking lip than anything else, so I am hoping he can make his passion work for him. Took me until I was 50 to figure out a way to make a living on the water, so he's way ahead of the game in my book. Good luck to him!

Edit: Clarification: Used some fishing slang there that could be misconstrued. "Jerking lip" means hooking and landing a fish.

And of course, if the pro bass circuit doesn't work out for him, his time as a cop qualifies him for loluva's next head coaching vacancy.

That's treason!

Naw, he'd be a double agent and be getting paid the big bucks to go fishing. Of course, even with that he'd still be a better coach than they've had for a while...so, well, I guess you're right.

Nevermind.

Leg! That was a funny.

By the way, I understand you took a fraternity brother of mine and his daughter fishing on the New in the past. His name is Dave Boyd. He lives in Washington state now but travels this way often. He and I surfed together several times in the OBX back in the 80s. Any recollection?

But Sergio would be a better HC than him probably.
