Will Chris Durkin be the "Wild Turkey" QB this season?

Do you think that he becomes the "Wild Turkey" QB this season? Motley did well last year, but I'm thinking that you want to keep your backup healthy for some insurance at the QB position.

I could also see Durkin really doing well in that role with his size and athletic ability.

To me, the wild Turkey can become a sustainable package only if there is a legitimate threat to pass out of it. I haven't seen Durkin throw enough to know one way or the other. I would think he would be a good short yardage threat. But again, it can only be but so effective if the defense learns exactly what it means when he is behind center. I do hope he can put it all together though.

From what I've seen of him throwing, the guy has a legitimate cannon for an arm. Really can put a lot of velocity on it. Accuracy and mechanics have been the biggest question marks with him, but Loeffler has remarked how he improved this offseason. I have no doubt that he could fake the hand off on a read option and connect on some deep passes. I think he would be outstanding in the role if given the opportunity. We will have to see how things shape up in camp.

I'd love to see us find a way to get him onto the field. I guess it depends on how well Brewer is doing, honestly. If he's kicking ass and taking names, you're not going to want to pull him out ever. If the offense continues to be "meh," I'd say another wrinkle couldn't hurt.

It was a catch

Wild turkey run like the single wing. I could get into it.

Not going to lie, with the offseason we're having, when I saw this thread title, I thought we were about to learn of another transfer...

Glad that wasn't the case

Same here. Case in point of "use a descriptive title when starting a thread."

I updated the thread title to reflect EddieVT's post. Great question and thread EddieVT, in the future be mindful to pick a more descriptive title.

Don't discount Durkin. If his throwing gets on par, he will be neck and neck with Lawson for the starting gig. People think I am nuts, but you watch. First one that gets the pre-snap reads and then makes accurate post snap reads and good throws will be "the guy." People have kind of forgotten about Durkin, but he is the kind of athlete you find a role for.

(Insert tight end joke here)
In all seriousness though I couldn't agree more.. He's a beast and we absolutely need to get him on the field in some capacity; and sooner rather than later.

Just saying...

Durkin looked good in the spring running the football during scrimmages. I don't like the idea of your second string QB being the running option, if he gets hurt things could get ugly fast. It makes way more sense for Durkin to be the change of pace quarterback.

I won't discount Durkin at all, I think he could be integral to our success in the next few seasons. But I think Motley should be the change-of-pace quarterback this year.

The biggest reason I think so is that he has more experience, so I think he will be able to operate our offense better if Tex goes down. I liked what I saw out of him last year when we used his mobility and size to move the ball in a few specific circumstances, and he's good enough in that respect that I don't think we get a significant upgrade with Durkin. In cases we need a new #1 due to an injury to Tex, Motley is my new instant #1.

As for scenarios where we have the option to play anyone we want (for example: the 4th quarter of a blowout victory), I'd like to have Motley in to get additional live reps so he's sharp for the remainder of this season, with a mix of a little Durkin to get his feet wet in that role in preparation for the future.

Durkin reminds me a bit of Tim Tebow at this point. Would be interested in seeing him coming in and doing some of those things Tebow did at Florida, especially near the goal line. Lots of options to have to defend there.

Wow I wish that was the case considering Tebow won the Heisman in his second season at the college level.
