Gucci and ghetto Kroger

Apparently, calling the Krogers in town "Gucci" and "ghetto" is not showing Hokie Respect.

Maybe if Corporate, or the Franchisee could keep them to the same standard we wouldnt have to hate on one of them.

According to the Reddit thread, it's because Gucci Kroger used to be Harris Teeter, and has a different layout that requires more filler, hence things like that big wine area.

When was it a HT? Had to be before 2001 if true.

FWIW, I've seen plenty of Kroger stores with that same layout that have always been Kroger.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

It's always been Kroger to me (2014 grad), but some posts below also say it was a Harris Teeter back when they were in school. I never really considered the layout until someone pointed it out, but thinking back it did kinda just seem different from the four other Krogers I've shopped at.

How about they demolish crappy Kroger and build a Wegmans. Then we have nice Kroger, and baller Wegmans!

How about they demolish the entire university mall and try again. The whole place blows. I had an online math class so was at the Math Empo all summer long. Truly is hell on earth. Glad that's over.

My department head mentioned that it was a Harris Teeter. I think he said it closed around 2003.

Live for 32. Ut Prosim. Let's Go, Hokies.

Circa 1999, Harris Teeter and Kroger did a deal where Kroger bought all of the Roanoke/New River Valley HT's and made them Krogers, and Harris Teeter bought all of the North Carolina Triad area Krogers', and turned them into HTs.

Grocery store gerrymandering, if you will.

Leonard. Duh.

I had this funny feeling that when I visited the Triad long ago, they had Krogers. Was always wondering why they're all HT's these days.

Was a HT when I came to VT in '97, had been a Kroger for a few years when I graduated in' 02. I'm thinking '99ish was when it switched.

I wasn't even aware this was a thing...

Onward and upward

It was on VT Yik Yak all day on Friday.

But I agree- I've always referred to the one as Gucci Kroger (no 's'), the other i just said "the other Kroger" - no 's'

They also want to "eliminate binary, gendered bathroom design." I have nothing to say about this twitter account that would be within the community guidelines. Go Hokies.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

I saw the bathroom thing and all I could think was "since when is the color yellow at all indicative of male gender?"

Yellow seems like a good bathroom color since it's the color of pee

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

But that's not sexist, it's just practical. Guys can, and, when drunk, occasionally do, piss on walls. So you make the walls a color that hides piss stains. #INVENTTHEFUTURE

But what if women want to piss on the walls too! Why should their piss stand out on pink tiles! That's privilege if I've ever seen it before.

Maybe they could go to GahTech? Apparently YOU CAN DO THAT.

I've never in my four years (2015 grad) heard the term "ghetto" kroger. And hell, Gucci is just Gucci mane

We frequently called it ghetto Kroger because someone stole the Acura logos out of the center of my rims while I was shopping once. To clarify these are the plastic inserts in the center of my rims that have the Acura logo on them and serve no purpose other than aesthetics. Not sure why anyone would want them but hopefully somebody is enjoying them.

That certainly qualifies lol I still have to go with Food Lion as the most ghetto supermarket in Blacksburg though. I'm pretty sure that weird, converted 50's service station across the street is a trap house. They only accept cash you know..

We referred to that as hood lion

It was always referred to as Beer Kitty to me and my clan because that was about all it was good for.

He's no good to me dead.

We called it the Shitty Kitty.

Or "that place we get our kegs."

As a former cashier at the Gucci Kroger during my Tech days, I had no idea this was a thing. I'll always have fond memories of the sh@tshow that would start coming in at 1130p trying to get beer before the deadline. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

Anyone from South Richmond/N. Chesterfield remember the Midlothian Ukrops near cloverleaf mall? I worked there and we call it "Ghetto U"

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

I'm a student now so I'm too young to remember Cloverleaf mall in its prime, but have lived in Richmond my entire life and can confirm how ghetto the entire area is/was. Only thing I miss is the shoe place next to Shoe City, which had LeBrons and Js for the cheapest price you could ever find. No idea what happened to the place now. I think it was called Sports Zone or something like that.

Wait so when I was at VT there was a Kroger on South Main... was there also one ... near the Math Emporium? Which one is ghetto and which one is Gucci.

Although I think I already know the answer

South Main=Gucci
Math Empo=Ghetto

Damn I had them wrong

Much less distinction now since UCB Kroger was renovated a couple years back. Although no one I know used the Gucci/ghetto nomenclature. The S. Main location was "big Kroger" and the UCB was just Kroger.

"Exit light..."

South Main Kroger is still significantly better than UCB. And my friends and I definitely use the nomenclature, with the only change being that the renovation to UCB Kroger changed it from "Ghetto Kroger" to "Kroghetto Fabulous".

I was wondering which was which myself. I graduated in '98 and there were two Krogers. A small one on North Main St. just past Progress St. (according to Google Maps it is now a YMCA and a thrift store) and one near the University Mall, the post office, and Macado's. No wonder I am confused.

Someone mentioned that one used to be a Harris Teeter. The Harris Teeter on South Main opened while I was there.

I guess the only constant is change.

That was Wades on north main where the Y is now, and there was another wades on south main. And Kmart was where the vt surplus and print shop are now. And yes, Kroger on south main was a Harris Teeter

I think I'm dating myself now, but if the one you're talking about on north main was on the right before Lucas drive (where i lived) heading away from downtown.....that was a Radford Bros. supermarket in my day....

My wife takes the kids and leaves the house while I watch my Hokie games.........nuff said

I despise the Kroger on Main Street that everyone alleges is so nice. They are always - ALWAYS - out of stock of what I need. I go across town to the Food Lion that apparently isn't nice...

Ha, I lived in Collegiate Suites for a couple years in undergrad so I was right across the street, but I still shopped at the UCB Kroger. Food Lion was always poorly lit and dirty, so I didn't feel comfortable buying food there. I'd pop over for beer and stuff, but never actual groceries. Is it still like that?

"Exit light..."

Yes. That food lion sucks monkey balls.

Please use the correct term..."primate testicles"

I lived in Hunter's Ridge. One 4th of July, we were at the soccer fields to watch the fireworks. Decided to swing by Food Lion for beer. There was an octopus on the floor in the frozen foods aisle. I don't think Food Lion sold octopus. Someone brought him with them and must have forgotten it. Poor lost octopus :/

From a student currently living in Collegiate, yes.
Also, since Kroger gives you points to get a few cents off a gallon of gas, its even more incentive to go to the UCB or SM Kroger

It's only been three years since I did all of my grocery shopping at that kroger and don't remember it being ghetto. Although, I do not care for the sealed concrete floors Kroger seems to be going with. I've been in several recently renovated Krogers and they all are doing this. It just looks bad on an existing floor, especially since they don't do a whole lot of floor prep and you can still see where the old tiles were.

You all make me feel old, I remember when Macado's was in the same building as "Getto" Kroger, the Math Emporium was a Roses, and Harris Teeter/Gucci Kroger was Gables Pharmacy..

Feeling even older - remember when Roses was downtown and the only place within walking distance to buy sheets.

I remember Roses, interesting no one has mentioned. Radford Bros yet

I was sad when Redford Bros closed, it always had a mom and pops feel. Many successful picnics started with a stop there for some fried chicken.

Anyone else old enough to remember The Golden Gobbler?

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

There has only been one time that "ghetto" Kroger hasn't had what I needed (beef tenderloin to be precise). There's really no point for me in adding on the couple of extra miles to go to Gucci kroger from my apartment. I usually only go there if I need to make an ABC at the same time.

I won't deny that it's nicer looking and bigger and I'm sure it does have a wider selection but my stomach has yet to complain about food from ghetto kroger. Food Lion, on the other hand.....

Ghetto is a location, not a race. Implying that using the term is racist is assuming a specific race lives there and is inherently racist.

well, the term "ghetto" is of Italian origin (circa 1600) to describe the location where Jewish people lived (often poor). So, the origin does describe a religion that is sometimes also sometimes characterized as a race (debatable, and not picking sides on either). But, to your point in current day terms, the term "ghetto" has taken on a poor place, and does have an association of black culture - mostly adopted by prominent black figures, beginning in the 1930s and 40s.

Despite mainstream America's use of the term "ghetto" to signify a poor, culturally or racially homogenous urban area, those living in the area often used it to signify something positive. The black ghettos did not always contain dilapidated houses and deteriorating projects, nor were all of its residents poverty-stricken. For many African Americans, the ghetto was "home": a place representing authentic blackness and a feeling, passion, or emotion derived from rising above the struggle and suffering of being black in America.[41] Langston Hughes relays in the "Negro Ghetto" (1931) and "The Heart of Harlem" (1945): "The buildings in Harlem are brick and stone/And the streets are long and wide,/But Harlem's much more than these alone,/Harlem is what's inside." Playwright August Wilson used the term "ghetto" in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (1984) and Fences (1987), both of which draw upon the author's experience growing up in the Hill district of Pittsburgh, a black ghetto.[12]

Outlaw comparative language, as it always comes at someone's expense, and we're not supposed to notice differences any more.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Yup!

So, how you been doing?

I've always thought "Gucci kroger" was a stupid name, however I don't really think it's racist. Call it what you want.

Lol good point, no matter how much lipstick you put on that pig it is still a Kroeger!

I remember when the Gucci Kroger was opened as a Harris Teeter and it had a live fish pond in the back of the store. You could select your own trout and they would net and gut it for you.

Tell you what IEC, I will make a deal for the board here. I think most would agree. Get "Stick it In' reinstated and we will drop the "innuendos".

Kroger is headquartered here in Cincinnati and the proper term is Kroghetto not ghetto Kroger. Get the "classist" terms right!

I graduated from Tech in 2012, and while I attended, the absolute need for political correctness everywhere KILLED me! Im all for not offending people, but good lord college kids take it to an extreme. We all know its literally impossible to please everyone 100% of the time right?

After reading that article, and without knowing the whole story, I'm wondering if these theories (specifically the harassment parts) were part of CJ Reavis's dismissal. They seem to explain why it wasn't criminal.

@CraigThompsonVT

Im still working my way through the article (I keep getting work done for some reason), But I completely agree with you.

Yeah, given all the attention this sort of thing has gotten recently, I sometimes wonder how some of my classes were a thing. Both Con Law courses I took had a ton of open discussion about a wide variety of things, yet no one was ever "triggered." My International Relations Senior Seminar, DBHT14 and I repeatedly took over the world during the half a semester where we got to play hypothetical war games. Nobody left class crying (except maybe from laughter when we did things like create a NATO-esque group in Southeast Asia known as MICKJAgGER). The criminology course I took (with half the football team) constantly mentioned race, violence of all sorts, and we watched a lot of movies depicting those sorts of things. Nobody went to the dean to complain. Perhaps the most contentious class though was Morality and Justice, in which there was a recitation section where we got to argue about the weeks topic every Friday. Topics like abortion, euthanasia, social justice. And having our ideas challenged by each other made us all smarter. More articulate. Better able to defend our beliefs. Which is the entire purpose of those sorts of classes, so it would be educational malpractice to stymie the free flow of ideas just because someone's precious feelings get hurt.

just because someone's precious feelings get hurt.

^This is the most damning part of it all. Once you get out of college into the real world, no one gives a damn about your precious feelings. And sure, the article even mentions how the DOJ has started leaning towards hyper-sensitivity, but are you really going to make a living suing everyone every time they offend you? These kids need to get over themselves, learn to deal with a little bit of disappointment, or learn how to express the fact that they dont agree without starting a shit storm

I mean, my eventual goal IS to go to law school, so the suing everyone thing could be pretty lucrative these days...

They certainly have a high PC level here at VT. Truthfully a time comes when everyone needs to get their feathers ruffled, and certainly begin to understand that their opinion is just that, an opinion.

As a 28 year old army veteran it's fun seeing how misguided some of my fellow classmates are when it comes to this.

Welcome to the site! And I agree with you. I hate playing the "it comes down to how you were raised card", but I wasnt exactly privileged when I was growing up, and I feel I got used to being let down and more well rounded because of it. Not everything in life is sunshine and rainbows, whoop dee do. Dust yourself off and keep moving forward

I only remember "Wade's grocery".
Come to think of it, that might offend some.
However, $5.99 beast light cases, $6.99 Natty light cases and then the mind ending 5.9% alcohol Beast Ice cases.... makes everything else real fuzzy....
Don't judge me...

Bud Foster is made of hokie stone!

I remember Wade's as well.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

As a freshman in 2004 I went to Wade's supermarket to have my "Girls of the ACC" Playboy signed by the VT gals who represented our fine institution. Oh the memories...

When I graduated, Cook Out had more or less just opened. With Kroger, ABC store and Cook Out all in the same vicinity, what college student wouldn't call that area Gucci?

Party Positive.

Gucci was a HT when I started school and changed over when I was there. Apparently during that time, they opened and then tore down the free standing ABC store. Surprised no one mentioned that. Gucci also has Vintage Cellar nearby, so that covers the beers you may have missed at Kroger.

El Gaudalupe's was there, but is now closed. Which is sad, because it was the best Mexican restaurant in the area. I don't care what anyone says, El Rods is not good mexican. People only like it because of the margaritas. El Gran Rodeo is the best down there now. El Gauds though, still miss that place.

The town consistently changes. There was a drug store, that became crossroads records, which then became a Moes. Just like there was an Arnolds, that became Prestons, then woodys, then Sharkeys. I actually miss the old sharkeys. And what happened to Ton 80? Why did Mish Mish move to Main street?

Anyway, glad some stuff never changes though.

I remember one year, I think it was right after we got back to school, a bunch of friends and I went down there to go to the ABC store. We pull into the parking lot and all look at each other like, "it was here, right?" For a while, we thought we had gone crazy. Nope, they just tore it down.

Very sad about El Guad's. Great place.

"Exit light..."

Wait, that ABC store is gone now? Damn. That spot fueled many a hazy memory for a young VTFly. I'll have to pour some out tonight. Sigh.

I shed a tear for El Guad's. Their chori pollo was great. I had a similar experience to VTGuitarMan's. My wife and I were driving down main street, coming into town to have lunch on our way back from Virginia Beach, and we looked at each other at the same time and said, "Did we pass El Guadalupe? I didn't see it." So we actually turned around and drove back past because we were both convinced we were going crazy. Our reaction was similar to this...
